Genuinely not sure how this restaurant gets such high reviews. Stopped for dinner on our drive up from LA back to Oakland. The interior was cute, and the server was very nice and attentive. We ordered a mix of tacos and enchiladas, rice and beans. The chicken enchiladas were overly salted- the chicken and sauce. The ground beef in the crunchy taco was also too salty and unevenly seasoned with some bites saltier than others. Beans were... beans. Rice was fine. Just finished lunch and it was fantastic. Located just off the main drag and in a cute, clean, very authentic setting. Very friendly, attentive staff and well done, traditional Mexican classics. The salsa is outstanding, the meats nicely seasoned, tender and moist. I judge Mexican restaurants by their salsa, beans and chile rellenos. I had a combination plate and the Chile Relleno was one of the best I've had in quite some time. The beans aren't watery and mashed to paste. I loved the shrimp. It was Cooked perfectly and tasted fresh, perfect texture. The main thing to know, it's set back from the street and you might not see it and think it's closed. It's there! FANTASTIC! What a gorgeous hidden little gem! I LOOOOVE finding places like this! The food was fabulous and flavorful. Ice cold Beer was served in a frozen glass and on a hot May Day it really hit the spot! Shrimp tacos were flavorful and you better be hungry! They are big. We also ordered the al pastor tacos and again, super yummy and filling. (Not too much though, just perfect) complimentary chips n salsa were served as well. As we were dining outside, people saw us and showed up. They found it in yelp as well, so please keep posting fellow Yelpers! It helps people find amazing places like this! I've been here a lot of times, even under the previous name and ownership, and it's always been very good. We would come for retirement lunches or just with another co-worker or two. Meh. I've been here a couple times now... The reviews are always so good, but nothing I've gotten has been spectacular, or even "good". I got a chile verde burrito recently, but honestly it should have been named a "rice burrito". It was huge, but it was 95% rice. Seriously. SO. MUCH. RICE. I mean, it's not horrible by any means, but I think yelps 2 star description "Could've been better" is the perfect description. This is definitely not a 4 or 5 star mexican food experience. We made a week-long road trip up from San Diego to Carmel for a wedding and on our return home on the 101 we were in need of a stretch and a chance to take a break before our next leg of our trip. I took to Yelp to try and find something along our way, knowing our options were limited while passing through San Miguel. There's literally just a couple of restaurants where we were on the 101. We were craving Mexican food and landed on a place called Taco Mafia. It boasted rave reviews and after our experience I can see why! It's a small little place, but that's also its charm. It was early afternoon so there weren't a lot of people dining, so we had a pick of where we wanted to sit. Since my toddler is potty training it was time for him to take a break and I was relieved to see the bathrooms be in such good order! Afterwards we sat down and were immediately served with chips and their homemade salsa. If I could get a tub of that salsa and bring it home with me I would! I love how fresh it was and so bright! My husband went with their menudo (it was a weekend so why not?!) and a number of their street tacos. We probably tried one of each and it was beyond the best tacos we've had in a looooong time! The menudo was also delicious and the portion was huge - enough to share and for us to take some to go and enjoy the next day. This is a little gem off of the 101 and a MUST STOP for anyone looking for a welcoming atmosphere, clean facilities, and top notch food. I'm seriously salivating while writing this review! Major props to the chef here and I can't wait to find myself in San Miguel again just for Taco Mafia! read more
