I'm not a fan of tacos, not my thing and I never went out of my way to eat tacos... I've had west coast "authentic" tacos a lot, and it's just meh for me. So when Taco rock opened by my house, I gave it a shot. Let's say I've eaten here 7 times in the last couple weeks this location has been open haha. I love these tacos! I'm definitely not going to have the beach body I wanted but I'm going to have it again tonight and may try the tacos with lettuce. My favorite tacos are: birria (the dipping one) and puffy beef Taco. I would never pick anything other than Carne Asada or chicken and I think the 2 I listed above are the most delicious! I also like the general tso cauliflower Taco for a no meat option. My favorite part about the place is the music! I grew up in the 90s with the best alternative music and they play all of my favorite hits here -- major 90s rock nostalgia! One thing I would say was slightly a negative and annoying, and maybe because it was the first week it opened so it's understandable. But at 9:30pm, I wanted to order another Taco and when I went to order at the bar the bartender said the kitchen was closed -- kinda confused me with 30 minutes left to close and the tacos are made fairly quick. My last 2 orders were simply terrible-my fish taco was a greasy hard rock and there was no lettuce or veggies in the taco salad - all beans and a little chicken. I went to Taco Rock on Sunday and was not impressed at all. I ordered one carne asada taco, a land and sea taco and one birria. The carne asada and land and sea tacos were way too salty. The land and sea taco is a steak/shrimp taco, but it only had one shrimp. The only thing I kind of liked was the birria taco. I doubt I'll be coming back. read more

Came here after hearing rave reviews from family members. I love tacos so it was definitely worth the try. I ordered 4 different tacos, Birria ramen and the elote off the cob. The elote was by far my favorite thing that day, I would go there just to get the elote!! The Birria ramen, ehh not great. Honestly I don't see the hype over Birria or maybe I just haven't had the best but i definitely could of done without it. For $12 it could of been better. The tacos I tried were al pastor, key west grouper, puffy beef taco, and honestly I can't remember lol maybe barbacoa? Al pastor was not good at all, I've only ordered al pastor at one other place but that was delicious, the one from here PASS. Flounder was the best, idk what the red stringy things on top were but the taco was good. Puffy beef taco was also good, very juicy, I'm sure if it sits too long the taco shell will be soggy and fall apart. Barbacoa or whatever it was, I don't remember so clearly it wasn't memorable. I would return just because they have other options to try and also get some more elote. Ordering is different than many places I have been, order on a tablet, pick up buzzer, pick up food once it goes off. Cups for your drinks are behind the bar so you have to ask the bartender for it, luckily it wasn't packed in there so I was able to get a cup pretty quick. This place was recommended by a friend. I was a excited to try the Birria tacos which have been all over IG. I got 2 Birria, El Gringo and the Loaded Carnitas. The Birria, my first time trying them, wasn't what I expected. I've never had them before so I'm not sure how they should taste. The consommé was a No as well. I would recommend having them put the guacamole on the side. The El Gringo was tasty but it didn't have any spice as the description states. The Carnitas was also tasty but VERY greasy!! Pretty average flavor and texture-wise, presentation 5* everything looked beautiful. First off staff was nice there's one self serve kiosk to order from and if there's a line you'll be waiting for quite awhile cuz people like to stop and stare at everything. Bartender was nice enough to take our order cuz they saw us waiting for awhile. The decor is very nice and has a very open concept with the garage door in front. Started off with the chicken flautas and flamin crusted poppers. The flautas by far the best thing I ordered, think taquitos smothered in queso, crema, pico and lettuce. They were unexpectedly crunchy and had a nice flavor, my only gripe is the chicken was dry but nothing the sauces and salsa can't help. The poppers were like any other popper I've had before, i like spicy food a lot but there wasn't any spiciness for something named flamin. also the bright nuclear red breading was a bit off putting but that's just a personal preference. Expected the breading to add something other than crunch to the poppers. TACOS ordered lengua, barbacoa, Memphis, puffy beef, loaded carnitas, and we jammin. Lengua, flavor was ok and as for texture I wish it was more tender that's all. Barbacoa, again flavor ok but the meat was dry like the chicken flautas. Carnitas, you guessed it same ok taste and dry meat as well. Puffy beef, ate this almost immediately cuz I knew it would get soggy fast, by far the best taco I tried, seasoned ground beef with toppings. the mix of textures was good but again flavor-wise pretty average. Lastly my least favorites the Memphis and we jammin. Both were not to my liking and almost the same taste, of which I could only taste overpowering sweetness. Honestly could barely tell the difference between the two because of the sauces. Salsas they have 3 mild, medium and hot. A mild salsa verde and as expected great with everything, my only gripe was it tasted a bit salty for some reason might just be me though. Medium, a slightly spicy tomato heavy based salsa pretty good. Hot, a habanero based salsa again pretty good. Found myself using a lot of this to counter sweetness and lots of salsa verde to counter dry meat. read more

Won't be coming here again! This place is a rip off. I decided to try this place as ive seen ads with pictures of the birria crunchwrap taco, and at the suggestion of my brother in law. I ordered 2 Birria crunch wraps($13 each) and a cabo wabo sandwhich ($12)to split with my wife. The birria crunch wraps tasted like oil and lacked flavor, and the dipping sauce was bland and tasted mostly of oil aswell. The cabo wabo was a sorry excuse of a chicken that was borderline burnt, and it almost seemed like it was covered with chicken seasoning to give it flavor, and was still bland (picture below).I don't mind paying the cost of a birria crunchwrap and a sandwhich if it was done right. Taco bell is better, and cheaper then this, and it almost embarrases me to say that. read more

3.5 stars. Hubs and I came and sat at the bar for dinner. The first thing we noticed was the very lax mask policy for employees. Many had none and many who had masks had them under their chins. I ordered the al pastor and the birria. The al pastor was quite good. Good amount of filling, I'm a fan of the single shell blue corn and they have some great salsa offerings. The birria didn't have the dipping sauce (or maybe that I misread that it was supposed to have that) - it was tasty but a little one note on flavor. I can't speak to how well executed this taco is because as far as birria goes, it might be top notch! Just wasn't my cup of tea. Hubs got 3 tacos, and all 5 tacos came on one plate - with all the sauce/salsa/grease, it wasn't really tenable to share a plate, so I ended up eating mine over a massive pile of napkins. We also ordered the shrimp ceviche. Decent! It's not overly limey, but it is a little expensive for what you're getting and the presentation in a plastic cup left a lot to be desired. One could say they did that for COVID, but then why no masks? The weirdest service issue was the bar back mixing up horacha. I asked if that's what it was, he asked if we wanted to taste it, we said sure, he gave us a full glass and then we were charged for the full glass. We dropped in by chance as we were nearby and I was craving tacos. The vibe was casual and the soundtrack took me back to my school days. The food was very good! We are pescatarian and vegetarian and were able to order a big variety of items (about 7 total). The puffy blue chips were so unique, we loved everything we ordered. Birria- good, but they forgot the broth. Not spicy at all. I really liked it. And will definitely get it again. Fried Avocado- good, but having a giant chunk of a avocado made everything a little bland. I added lime and a little bit of tomatillo sauce and it was really good. (Side note- tomatillo sauce was a little spicy, but just a touch of it was really good) Shake down shrimp- too spicy for me (I'm a wuss and can't do too much heat) The shrimp with chipotle ranch was really good (and I ended up just eating the shrimp). The shredded cabbage was more like a vinegar slaw and had jalapeños in it. El Gringo- husband had it. He said it was bland. Woo hoo I am a fan! It's a cute restaurant with a bar that you can order drinks from, they have TV's at the bar, it's a really cool place to chill at. They have good music, I enjoyed it on a sunny day. They do offer outside seating, and at the bar there are chairs you can sit at and hang there as well. They have the thick filled supreme crunch birria that I found so unique about this place. The best item that I recommend is their elote, it's so flavorful and delicious. Their tacos were stuffed, they don't skimp. I had their hot girl summer drink which was fruity, but not super sweet and you can barely taste the alcohol. I had an amazing experience at Taco Rock. So, seeing a place that was EXACTLY Taco Bamba's concept, I was filled with anxiety that I had been missing out on northern Virginia's new taqueria; I came back the next day (when I was famished) and can honestly say, there's no need to worry you're missing out on anything with this place! I am fortunate to live in Falls Church so I got to experience the original District Taco and Taco Bamba locations when they first opened. Taco Rock is not that, not by more than a mile. We ordered carnitas nachos, the fried grouper taco, land and sea taco, elote and horchata. PRO #1: large serving sizes-- it's lower quality ingredients, so expect the gross serving sizes you may have started to miss at taquerias that work more delicately. PRO #2: I felt the horchata and elote hit the right taste buds, I was happy with them. My wife got nostalgic for the "Street Corn in a Cup" served at the Ballston Taco Bamba that we tried last month, and she felt the Horchata had a weird sweetness (she described as syrupy), and horchata is one of her favorite things, so I defer to her. I also thought the steak on the land and turf was good, but then I thought about it; it's because it tasted exactly like a steak taco from Taco Bell in 1998. CON-cum-massive-fail: Nothing was fresh. The fried fish taco was actually cool, soggy breading. Maybe they fried it an hour ago? The chips were blasé... don't expect "crispy yet somehow melt in your mouth " (note: intentionally ate this the MOMENT it was served, but nothing. CON-just-let-downs: my wife found a single shrimp on her land and sea taco. We held a brief ceremony for the lonely guy. The nachos were just a bunch of gunk thrown on chips, not at all balanced ingredients that play off each other's flavors-- there was no queso blanco in attendance (but there was green slime that may have been guac?), it was a bunch of melted and burnt stuff that you'd find in "Fancy Mexican Shredded Cheese" bags at the grocery store. It essentially didn't have a single flavor highlight; I don't know if I've ever in my life not finished an order of nachos! I think I ate half? It reminded me of a low quality version of Chevy's toasted nachos, or of Baja Fresh if you took their toppings and made them on store bought tortilla chips. This is not a good restaurant struggling in the 2021 environment, this is a restaurant that doesn't know how to try. IMPRESSIONS fun enough environment, nowhere near as nice/intense/edgy as Taco Bamba. Probably a great place for a drink and bar food. Our take out (to the parking lot) order was served without silverware or napkins (Re: nachos are an incongruous blob?), when I asked if there was salsa inside, the bartender asked "For what?". They took a cool 15-20 minutes to make the order on a Sunday at 6p. One cook was constantly playing with his ill-fitted mask and then taking that same glove down into the cook line (not overly paranoid about COVID here... but in 2019, would you let a cook touch their face and everyone's food with the same glove?) More on "this isn't fresh"; they were stuffing meat into a whole tray of tortillas just to have them sit and wait to be ordered... I mean, when I saw that, I thought "soggy tortilla" but now that I see myself writing it out, all I can think is "that meat is not being kept at any kind of food service temperature!" I would rate this as less impressive and lower quality than Chipotle. read more

My favorite part was the Empanadas, I expected ground beef but got some way better kind of beef (don't actually know what kind) but it was awesome! I would suggest the Ahi Tuna taco but honestly, they were all so fire, it's hard to choose.
