Taco Rock definitely jumped up to the top of my list of favorite taco joints in NOVA based on their pork belly taco alone. This spacious joint is offering up refreshing drinks from their large bar, fresh salsas, and hot tacos. You can order and sit at the bar, or you can order at the touch screen counter and grab a seat. I dined in right as they opened on a Sunday morning, and surprisingly I was not the only one there. Others trickled in to sit down at the bar or to get to-go orders. I got their blackberry lemonade, a side of chips and salsa, a pork belly taco, a fried cauliflower taco, and my SO got three birria tacos (which automatically come topped with guac!). The side of chips was large enough for the two of us to split, all the food came out together and at good temperatures, and everything looked picture perfect. The pork belly was pure perfection. Crispy and sweet on the outside, while soft and deliciously fatty on the inside. The sauce on top paired with it nicely to keep it from coming off too heavy. The cauliflower was wonderfully fried and came with two massive pieces. Again, the sauce paired well with it to keep it balanced. My only wish is that the blue corn tortillas that the specialty tacos came in were heated up a little bit on the stove before plating. They don't have the chewy, grainy feel of a completely uncooked tortilla, but it would really help lift the taco up a bit more. read more

First order we made was last weekend, and it was absolutely phenomenal. Last week we had ordered Tacos and a Steak Burrito. Everything was perfect. The burrito was wonderfully made with delicious steak, and had all the right proportions. Unfortunately, today my wife and I ordered two Steak Burritos that were not what we experienced last weekend. After taking a bite we discovered it was some kind of shredded meat, with the only shredded burrito option online being the Carnitas. We called, and they said the Kitchen Manager confirmed himself that he personally made it with steak, although shredded. Nick, a wonderful employee taking the phone calls, also seemed confused on why they'd use shredded, and offered a remake. We gladly accepted, and after getting the remake we found it was, again, shredded beef. This was very disappointing, so I called back to see if they were simply out of the cubed steak they usually use. Nick guessed they must be, if they used the shredded beef again, and apologized while offering a refund. We accepted, though I felt leaving this review was necessary. If the kitchen is out of an item, you 86 it and make it unavailable for ordering. You don't simply replace it with another option, and I'm extremely disappointed that a Kitchen Manager would find this acceptable. To be clear, we were never told the normal steak option was unavailable, or offered an alternative because it was unavailable. See attached photo from their own website on how the steak SHOULD normally look, compared to what we received. Sadly, the shredded beef is not great in their burritos. It's a completely different texture and flavor, and it's hard to even distinguish the beef from the beans. Quite frankly, it's unappetizing and unappealing. I'd give it a generous 2/10, compared to the 9.5/10 I'd give their real steak burrito. While the customer service we received on the phone was excellent, the food was not up-to-par with our first visit. I'm unsure if we'll be back, or if we can continue to recommend it after today's experience. read more

My bestfriend and I stopped by Taco Rock for a last minute planned happy hour and it did not disappoint. We arrived around 4:30PM and it was perfect because there wasn't a huge crowd. It is small indoors but they have plenty of outdoor seating that will be great when it warms up. We sat at the bar and we were quickly greeted by the bartender. She was funny and friendly and helped us go through the menu to check out the best tacos to try. We tried: puffy beef taco, birria taco, blacked salmon, ahi tuna, and the mexican street corn. I'm OBSESSED. I have been searching for decent tacos in the dmv since I got back from El Paso. They're creative, lean, tasty, and delicious. I got carne asada, pollo, shrimp, and barbacoa. The only one I wouldn't order again was barbacoa, just because it wasn't as flavorful as the others. The others just knocked it out of the park, specifically the carne asada and shake down shrimp. It was a very chill atmosphere. They have a large selection of Tacos, appetizers and a full bar. Passed by here last week when getting other food and I've already tried the Rosslyn location previously so figured why not. They have a good amount of meatless options as well so it was exactly what we were looking for. I placed an online order and it was ready in less than 20 minutes, around dinner time too. The shrimp rice bowl was super filling. Loved that I could add shrimp to the veggie bowl. Came with about 6 huge shrimp and they were spiced very well. The bowl itself was very filling. The salmon taco was ok, love their blue corn tortillas though (made in house). My girlfriend loved both the fried avocado and general Tso tacos (I didn't get a bite so yeah). The puff chips might've been my favorite part. Crispy and chewy despite having to travel, maybe a little salty. Guac was ok, pretty standard and chunky. A little disappointed by the horchata. They were in cups that were 2/3rds full. I think they were better off in smaller cups because the cups were huge. Taco Rock is a solid option for fancy fusion tacos, distinguished by their shells. The bar is set for they type of establishment by the Taco Bamba chain, and this is quite similar with a small bar available and upbeat rock music playing in the backgroundm The place is a la carte style, where you order at the cashier and grab a table. During these covid times, they had 5 - 6 tables indoors so seating is limited. Full disclaimer before I get started: I am a tex mex, flour tortilla kind of person - not sure if that disqualifies me from reviewing tacos, you foodie snobs ;P. For dinner I ordered the Birria taco which came with a nice beef consumme for dipping, a key west grouper taco, and the puffy beef taco. The birria was good, meaty, and filling, and had a fairly flavorful dipping broth. The key west grouper was just okay. The puffy beef taco was my favorite, with its crispy, airy, fried shell and tex mex fillings of ground beef/sour cream/cheese. What struck me out of all of these was that i actually liked these tortillas, unlike Taco Bamba's, which i usually end up discarding. What was really good at Taco Rock are its non-taco items. My companion ordered (and i sampled) the jalapeño poppers wbich were HUGE, stuffed to the brim with cheese, breaded with flamming hot cheetos (i think) and nicely spicy. He also got the elote which had plenty of creamy lime sauce on it that really set it apart as the most unique and best elote I've had. To wash it down he had the horchata, which to me was way too sweet. Overall, solid food, solid establishment. A cute spot in the growing pinecrest plaza. Bar is long but seating area is small. Seems like this place was designed to be more of a bar vs a restaurant, which feels a bit out of place in this area. It's a bit confusing when you go in, apparently you can go right up to a counter by the open view kitchen and place orders yourself on some computers, or you can order food at the bar. As a new place I was a bit put off by the lack of enthusiasm the staff showed when I said it was our first time and asked what they recommended, "take a look" was all I got. Anyways I know my way around tacos, so I picked out a few to try as well as the elotes. After ordering to go, you're again put in a confusing situation where they give you a table stand with a number... Which is weird since we're not even at a table and there's no where to stand at the bar. Overall, the food was yummy, but small and a bit pricey for what you get. It does have a cool and creative appeal, but I guess if you're there for a meal, it didn't seem satisfying. A pleasant surprise for a takeout meal after a long trip to visit family nearby. We ordered a variety of items. Starter highlights included the Nachos and Puff Chips and (OMG) those Flaming Poppers!!!! For 'dinner', the number of Tacos available made it hard to choose, but I would definitely recommend the Chilly (Pork) Belly, Land and Sea and the Puffy Beef Taco. On top of this, another customer sat at the bar right before we left and was greeted immediately. I have been addicted to this place since they opened. It's a problem they are so close to my house now. I've sent a lot of people here and none of them have complained! As an elite eater, I've had 30+ items from their extensive menu. My usual tacos are the lengua, all the veggie lovers, birria, key west grouper, ahi tuna, and puffy beef. I also kill their chicken flautas, empanadas, and burritos. The 3 items that I did not love: flamin crusted poppers, birria ramen, and gringo pizza. The poppers were too heavy for me, ramen did not work well, and the pizza was very soggy and disappointing. But that all doesn't matter cause the items I love more than make up for it. I have to admit, I had high hopes for this place but this restaurant is disorganized at best! The food and service is a complete mismatch across the board. As first time "rockers" we entered in to find that we needed to order our food at one area, then order Alcoholic drinks at another area.... Meaning you'll have to swipe your card twice as they don't take cash. The area to order food reminded me of a WaWa gas station when you walk up to a screen and select your order. To order drinks just head to the bar. But while we sat down we noticed waiters?/workers handing out laminated menus to those seated? It was a very strange set up of service and appeared dysfunctional to me. Anyway so here's what we ordered.... Chicken Flautas: these were the best! Flavorful, and fried. What else is there to say? Yummy! Puffy Blue Chips/Guacamole: Now this place has some decent guacamole. But the chips were a miss, they were crispy in spots and where the "puffs" were they were soft/soggy (see pic). These weren't our favorite. Puffy Beef Taco: same scenario- the "puffy tortilla" was SOGGY YUCK. And we dined in, how did it get soggy so quick. This taco tasted similar to a sloppy Joe and felt like one too. A mess! Blackened Salmon: do you know the salmon used at those "quickway" Hibachi spots? This salmon tasted identical. Blackened... I'm not too sure. The flavor wasn't terrible but not favorable. Carne Asada: one of the best tacos in the flavor department. However, the meat is not tender at all, it's actually kind of over cooked. As stated, the flavors were nice just wish it was executed better. Now the Bar! I would never patronize this restaurant based off our bar experience. The bartenders (male and female) were both rude and nonchalant. They charged us 25$ each for the Mango Slushie drink with a shot of liquor inside. That was 50$ it was not worth it at all. Then they were rude and acted as if we were bothering them. As we left we noticed they had a station to put plates and glasses... oh my! The audacity! After we waited and served ourselves then we are cleaning up as well. This restaurant should be considered casual, literally fast food tacos. If you do intent to try this place, I would recommend take out. But there are many taco spots to try in the area! We happily will spend our money elsewhere. read more

The tacos I had just missed the mark for me, had 2$ tacos that hit better.
