Since moving here from Texas, I've been sorely missing good Mexican food. The whole cheese-covered, ground beef filled tacos that pass for Tex-Mex here really, really turns me off. So I was excited when I read Alexa's review of Taco T, and had to check it out. What I found was pretty close to my beloved Texas street tacos, with a couple of exceptions. Without a doubt, the star of the show is the handmade tortillas. I could eat a dozen of those straight without even thinking about it! The small tacos are filled with a variety of meats, and can be topped with lettuce, cheese, and sour cream (that's blasphemy in my mind, but I guess they had to Americanize their food some kind of way). I had to create what I think of as the traditional toppings for the tacos, avocado, lime, and cilantro, but at least they were available. Taco T's breakfast options are great! The large burritos are stuffed with eggs and chorizo, bacon, ham, or shredded beef, and the flour tortillas shine. These burritos will put the McDonald's stuff to shame, and cost about as much. Wow...this place is good. If you check out my profile, I really don't give many 5's, so take heed. We tried Taco T's for the first time this past Sunday. We got there pretty early (11:30am on a Sunday) so we were the only people dining there at the time. The building definitely looks like it's been a fast food joint for quite some time, so don't judge that book by its cover. Despite the unassuming building, the tacos are the bomb! We ended up trying them in waves since we really weren't sure how big they'd be, considering the fact that they're only $1 each. So for our 1st wave, we tried the Pollo (chicken), Bistec (steak), Al Pastor (pork - the one Americans will like - I'll explain that later), Chorizo (spicy Mexican sausage), and barbacoa. There are about 2 or 3 booths inside to sit and there's 3 or 4 tables outside if you're up for it. The cashier was friendly and asked us how we knew about Taco T's. I guess we looked like newbies. But, I also think this place is frequented by the Latino population and it was obvious that we didn't fit into that category. Anyways, we opted to sit outside under an umbrella while we waited for our food to be brought out. The cashier first came out with 2 bottles of salsa. One was a salsa verde, which was quite good, and the second was a slightly spicier red salsa (equally good, but different). After maybe 5 - 10 minutes our tacos were brought out to us. The tacos come wrapped in 2 smaller corn tortillas and are simple enough in that besides the meat, the only other thing mixed in were onions and cilantro for a little more added flavor. They really don't need anything else, but maybe a touch of salsa to kick up the flavor a notch. Even without salsa, they're damn good. And yes, they are tacos, but it's like night and day between this place and something like Taco Bell. Taco Bell was invented by some Californian that was intent on bastardizing Mexican food...so again...night and day. The highlights were the Al Pastor (American-style pork) and the chorizo. And I say American-style pork because on the menu, there is another type of pork that we were warned is ordered primarily by Mexicans as it's more commonly eaten in Mexico. Not that it was bad, but likely different then what we'd be used to. The other type of pork wasn't on the menu, but was more acclimated to American tastes. I wasn't feeling that adventurous, so that's why I ordered the American style pork (something like pordito?). I'm glad I did. Anyways, after we ate our 5 tacos (between the 2 of us), we went ahead and ordered 4 more tacos. Not only were we still a bit hungry, but they were just that good. Of note, soda is sold in cans, but they do have at least 3 different types of juices that you can order (e.g. papaya) in 3 different sizes. Also on the menu were a couple of other things: breakfast items, burritos, quesadillas, flan, tres leches, and maybe a couple of other items. No chips and salsa though. However, everything we'd read, and based on the name, the tacos are the way to go. If you're ever over on that part of Windy Hill in Smryna, give it a try. You won't be disappointed and we'll definitely be back. read more

Simple and authentic. My husband and I are huge Mexican food lovers. We have experienced all varieties - "fresh and healthy", the food truck, the hole in the wall and the supposedly gourmet. So being new to the Smyrna area, I looked to the OTP Yelpers to point me in the right direction of taco heaven. Admittedly, I couldn't help but cringe when I saw the tiny drive through building that used to be who knows what before Taco T. Then I reminded myself not to judge a book by its cover, and of course I was pleasantly surprised to find that I could easily become a regular at Taco T's. My husband had a sampling of three meat filled tacos and loved them all. He especially liked the taco shells. My Dad was with us, and had three beef tacos that disappeared rather quickly. I ordered a vegetarian burrito and a horchata. The burrito had the typical fillings of rice, re-fried beans and veggies, but it was a big portion and absolutely scrumptious! There were also free refills on the horchata - bonus! The prices and food were great, and I'd honestly rather go through their drive-thru any day rather than Taco Bells. These reviews are what brought me in to Taco T today! I ordered the #1, 3 tacos w/a drink. I chose the beef taco, the beef cooked in sauce taco, and the chicken taco. Great. I was asked what I'd like to drink. I replied Sprite. She goes to the back, comes back a few minutes later and tells me they're out of Sprite. Okay, that's cool... no biggie. Orange Fanta? Out of that, too. Uhhh, ok. "How about that slurpee machine behind you?" She says, "Yes, which one would you like? The dark red one here? It's most like fruit punch." Sure, I'll take that. She charges me an extra dollar. But for what??? It's not my fault you guys are out of what I originally wanted! When asked about that, she says, "Sorry, for any substitutions we have to charge the difference. " Eh. Mistake #1: Charging me for substituting what you don't even have. I'm not sure if Fruit Punch comes in grassroots flavoring or something, but this was NOT your average fruit punch slurpee. My friend even tasted it and grimaced. He said, "Ugh, take that back up there and ask for somethin' else." It was just odd-tasting. I placed the cup on the counter, asked her for another flavor and told her it tasted weird. I was cool about it, because to me it was no big deal. She said, "No. You'll have to pay for another drink. You could have sampled it beforehand." Excuse me? I asked her beforehand how it tasted; wasn't that a HINT that I had no clue what this version of Fruit Punch tasted like? SHE should have given me a sample since they offer that. Mistake #2: They do not switch out weird-flavored drinks or unwanted food/drinks without charging again. Then offers samples afterwards. So now we're eating these little tacos. My chicken taco was good! I liked the regular beef taco as well. The sauce-cooked beef taco??? Questionable. The sauce didn't compliment the taco, I'll just say that. Now we're ready to leave! My friend walks up and asks if he can get a refill. She gives him one and says to him in Spanish, "I'm only giving you a refill, because I saw you guys sharing your drink. Normally we don't give refills. Also I've never had a customer like that before. I'm only trying to do my job here." I resisted the urge to tell her about other customer-service oriented restaurants that DO switch out flat drinks, weird-flavored drinks, and DON'T overcharge for what they don't have. I resisted the urge. =). Taco T might not be such a bad place, really. I can't see myself stopping in again though for "ok" tacos and horrific customer service. ****EDIT 5/15/2010**** Not even a full hour after returning home, my stomach started twisting and turning until I threw up. Don't be surprised if you see tumbleweeds drifting down the street during your meal. Smyrna has a draconian immigration enforcement policy. This part of town, once a thriving, mostly-hispanic area, is now nearly deserted. The shopping center across the street from Taco T is a ghost town. The situation makes me worry that Taco T won't be able to stay in business. And that worries me. Because Taco T is a treasure worth coming back to again and again. During our meal here, I was so happy with the food that I was crying tears of joy. But the tears were also because I felt like such a moron for driving past this place completely oblivious to its presence for so many years! (OK, also a little because the salsa was so spicy). "T" may stand for "tiny." Taco T is a repurposed Checkers fast food restaurant. Checker's restaurants, as you may recall, do not have an indoor seating area. Taco T has installed an indoor seating area - it's very, very small. Two teensy booths and a short counter. Maybe ten peeps could squeeze in. Maybe. Plenty of outdoor seating though. It was easy for us a score one of those booths on Friday at about 9PM, though. Taco T seems to operate more as a drive-through/ takeout place than a sit-down restaurant. Lots of people picked up food to go while we ate. The menu is tiny too: only tacos, burritos, and tortas (sandwiches). I got four tacos - barbacoa, bisteca, al pastor, and one more (can't remember). $1/each. I did see some more interesting fillings such as tripe and tongue, but I wasn't feeling particularly adventurous. Our waitress asked if I waited cilantro and onions (yes plz) and I asked her to bring salsa. You can buy extras like cheese and sour cream if you like. Not a big fan myself. Waitress delivered tacos about 5 min after ordering, in a small basket with plenty of lime. In keeping with the theme, tacos are also - you guessed it - tiny. Kawaii! IMO smaller tacos are more manageable than large tacos and allow you to try more fillings, so not a bad thing. Flour tortillas are single-layer, but handmade each day. Corn tortillas are double-layer. Every taco was delicious! Red salsa bright and piquant; brownish-green salsa spicy and smoky. Polished 'em off with relish. Service was how I like it: fairly stand-offish, but attentive when needed. And very friendly when asked questions. Health score: 99(A). Did not notice date. Fairly clean - you can see into the kitchen. One unisex bathroom, also clean. I noticed that they also serve breakfast burritos for about five bucks each. They look delicious. BARBACOA TACO The best I've had yet. Meat is so gleefully flavorful and tender. I can't get enough of this taco. I think they braise it with ginger and some other herbs that are very similar to my grandmothers and mother's slow cooking, so this one hits the spot. Every time. CHORIZO TACO One of the better chorizos I've had. I like the flavors, and that it's not too greasy. The meat can be sometimes more charred or crispy, which i really like. CARNE ASADA TACO The meat is tender and cut into smaller pieces. Good flavors here too but not as strong and good as the barbacoa or chorizo. CHICKEN not my favorite taco here. The others are much better. Chicken is not as flavorful as others. MANGO JUICE Delicious. Refreshing. Get it with your tacos. Wash all the yumminess down. HORCHATA I like the horchata too but I wish it was just a bit thicker and a bit more cinnamon. It can be a little on the diluted/light side. read more

This is one of those hole-in-the-wall places to get authentic tacos in the Marietta area, especially when it's late at night - which means about 10, 10:30 or so. $1 per taco, you have a choice of soft or hard tacos. I'm a fan of soft corn tortillas because I dislike the cheapy hard shell tacos. I kinda rolled my eyes when my date ordered one of each available taco (there were 8, and it would've been 9 if they weren't out of lengua) in hard shells. Quickly though, after we started eating, I could see that the hard tacos weren't like the cheapy Old El Paso ones you buy at the grocery store or get at Taco Bell (or like the ones back in the day in the school cafeteria). These hard taco shells were actually made from the same corn tortillas used for the soft ones, so they were they MUCH tastier than generic hard shells. Flavor wise, it's hard to go wrong. I'm a little disappointed they don't have pastor tacos, but some of the flavors are pretty delicious. The lengua must be phenomenal if they ran out. I didn't eat there since the inside dining is closed at 9 and it was too dark outside, but Taco T puts your tacos in a styrofoam take-out box unlike Taco Veloz with their tacos individually wrapped in aluminum. Service, even at night, is great but it's probably because we were the last few customers of the night. I'd definitely come back if I were in the area. read more

This place doesn't look too fancy but the tacos and burritos are good! The place had a health department score of 96 so we gave it a try. Walk in here and you will find 3 clean tables. The restroom is on the outside of the building. The Taco's are a buck and they have some combo meals but the menu overall seemed pretty simple. I only have two issues with this place. #1 most of the menu is in Spanish. some things are translated in english but not everything. #2, they didn't have any guacamole.... but they offered us fresh avocado if we wanted. The people working in this place couldn't be nicer. For what is basically a fast food place they really went out of their way to make sure we were completely satisfied. I am not sure what all the hype is about, I am a fan, but it's not the "best tacos you'll ever have" type of place. They use corn tortillas and put cilantro and onions on their tacos, which is great as those are authentic Southern California style tacos. If you want you can add cheese and extra's, but who wants to mess up a So-Cal taco. The place is extremely small, definitely a take-out place, so atmosphere doesn't apply here, but it seemed clean. Staff is great and are bi-lingual. I will say if you want tacos im Marietta, this is the place, but I have had better ones in Woodstock of the same So-Cal origin. read more

Being from the Bay Area, then living in San Diego and going to college in Chicago I have definitely been exposed to very good, cheap mexican food. I'm not talking about the standard 2nd tier chains like Don Pablos or On the Border because this place is cheaper and better. I'd stick with the tacos the first time, that way you can try all the different meat options. They offer beef tongue tacos which people tend to stay away from but they were pretty good here. Every taco is made with fresh tortilla they made that day and topped with fresh cilantro, onion, and lime. Being excited and thc induced at the time I got 10 tacos for 11 bucks along with a really good Verde Sauce. I got 3 pollo, 2 cardona, 2 chorizo, 2 tongue and a bistek...if I remember correctly. You realize how good and cheap basic tacos can be if the proper fresh ingredients are used and that was mostly the case. The chicken tasted like chicken, the chorizo was well spiced, and the bistek was average quality meat. Overall everything was great and this is the spot for the quick mexican bite especially for all my blazers out there. This is a perfect spot. The best tacos I've ever had...and they're $1! The meats are flavored well, no need for a salsa bar, but must try the green or red sauce they give you. I've tried the chorizo, steak, and the chicken is great as well. They offer hard and soft shell; the tacos are tinier than expected, but very filling. The horchata is really good too. I recommend coming a bit early before the lunch crowd to get faster service and to not have to fight for a table. So I have eaten here a couple of times now and feel I can write a good review. The thing to get here, it seems, are the tacos. I had a steak burrito here on the first visit and i felt it was merely adequate; I opted for the steak burrito with onions, cilantro and fresh jalapeño (no beans, rice, lettuce & sour cream). The burrito was tasty and the two sauces - red and green (which they give you in squeeze bottles) - were very good, perhaps even great. The main problem with the burrito was that it was not that large of a portion of food, was poorly / flimsily constructed, and was (as is sometimes customary) cut into two halves. The result was a fall-apart / sloppy mess when trying to eat it. El Taco Veloz (a few doors down the road) seems to be a better option if you want a good authentic Mexican burrito. The tacos, on the other hand, were nowhere near as messy (double wrapped in small corn tortillas). I opted for one steak, one chicken and one pork. All three were loaded with meat, diced onions, cilantro and fresh jalapeño. Again, I liberally applied the great aforementioned two sauces they give you. On Tuesdays the small tacos are $1 each and, again, those seem to be the thing to get here. But since they are somewhat smaller than normal you should order maybe one or two more than you typically would. Like many authentic Mexican taquerias around town, there are many meat options (see Daniel B's review). I am a fan and will be back. Perhaps really deserves 3.5 stars; however, I will dispense with three. read more
