Of all the rivalries Austin Yelpers choose sides on - Whole Foods vs Central Market, Kerbey vs Magnolia, attention-ho threadsters vs nice people - the one I can never quite draw the line at is Tacodeli vs Torchy's. I think both of them are pretty cool, and if I'm in the mood for semi-pricey Anglicized taco fare, it's more about which one is closer to me than who's better. I think Torchy's does makes a killer queso, and they're open way past 3pm. I also think Tacodeli has some remarkable cult-worthy sauces, which are fun to mix & match & play with. Both places are making great tacos with hipster ingredients & clever names. But if you're zipping around Westlake Hills for whatever reason, and Dance Dance Taco suddenly hits you, there's a cool Tacodeli right next to the HEB. For the AMOUNT OF PEOPLE squished into the restaurant waiting for their tacos, I expected better... I got the salmon taco (without the shell) and the taco salad without the sour cream or dressing. Nothing wildly out of the ordinary here... And the salmon portion was minuscule... I should have ordered four of them! My fiancé got a trio of tacos: chicken, pork and a breakfast one and when asked if he liked his food, he said "pretty darn good" but I can read between the lines, after all, he's my fiancé, so I know him QUITE WELL... That was code for: eh, I could probably make something better at home if I really felt like cooking. Sure Tacodeli filled us up, and is one of the STAPLE RESTAURANTS of the people we are visiting in TX ... But if I lived here, would I ever go back? Eh.... Holy Smokes, I never thought I would give a 5-star rating to a fast food restaurant but TacoDeli changed all that and I'm not even a fan of Tex-Mex. Wow! TacoDeli food is absolutely delicious. My office ordered in from TacoDeli so with six different orders we had an assortment of menu items the huge standouts are the Sweet Potato Soup and the Cowboy Taco. So, I was prepared to hate the sweet potato soup, it just doesn't sound palatable to me but what a shocking surprise. This soup was smooth and savory. The kind of savory that still lingers on my lips even 3 weeks later. The Cowboy taco was also delicious. The meat was well seasoned and moist, none of that chopped up, beef goo served by other fast food taco chains. Fortunately, my corporate HQ is in Austin, TX and I will now invent reasons to go there and a visit to TacoDeli will be #1 on my 'To Do' List! read more

We stopped here while touring around Austin at the suggestion of the one local in our group. He raved about this home grown taco shop and how they were different from the others. The place was buzzing with young professionals and families on a weekday afternoon. I have to say the food was outstanding. The menu is HUGE! There are so many different choices that they're bound to have you covered. Don't miss out on the salsa bar before grabbing a table. I'm glad this part of town now has a Tacodeli location, especially since the options for decent breakfast tacos around here are few and far between. They have indoor and outdoor seating though I like to call in my order for pick-up as they have a separate register for that. This allows you to bypass the sometimes long order line (more of a lunch-time occurrence). As with the other locations, their non-breakfast tacos all consistently tasty and generally don't require the need for additional salsa unless you're looking to kick up the spice level. Went out for lunch during a visit to HQ, and we stopped here. Parking is a chore, but not Tacodeli's fault. We were able to find seating for 7 easily. All the workers were very kind, understanding of our 3/3 group ordering, and courteous when bringing out food and salsas (which you can also get yourself). The salsa verde was very tasty, and not at all spicy - which my coworkers know I can't handle haha. The tacos: I got the El Conquistador and the Aguachile tacos on corn (of course). The El Conquistador was amazing. You could tell the meat was fresh, cooked just right. The Aguachile had a nice kick of spice to it, which was fine, but I completely forgot this would come out as more of a *cold* taco (cured in lime, so ceviche-style). Not the shop's fault at all, so I don't dock for it. I'm docking because I'm not really a $4 taco (EACH) kind of person. I was definitely still hungry for more after eating my two, but I understand the prices cover the quality of the product. (Also, come on- it's West Lake Hills.) Ps. After a lengthy discussion, she was finished ordering. But then she offered free smoothies to the employees. Several employees came over and discussed what smoothie to get. The employees seemed oblivious to me. They were chatting amongst themselves and looking at their cell phones. I left disgusted. I spent 10 minutes in line. Definitely one of my top places to go to for tacos! Two is definitely enough for lunch, it's always hard to choose between their daily specials, and my go to. 99% of the time I go with a Shrimp Special and a Carne Asada taco. I LOVE THIS PLACE! Can I now get that in bigger letters and with an airplane sign in the sky?? lol This location makes food just as delicious as all the other locations. It is crazy how consistent this company is with their food. I have never seen a company that has gotten 5 stars at all locations. The Floretino is so good and I add refried beans to it for more protein. The chicken.. well all chicken tacos are great... Oh and Dona.. The Dona sauce is my favorite ever. I crave that sauce and if I could thank Dona personally for her delishes contribution to Austin society I would. This location has great customer service and a nice sitting area on the inside. They close at 3pm and so I would say get there at least an hour before they close in case they are super busy. Or better yet just call in your tacos and than sit down if you find an open area. Oh yeah, the Guac is really good and has more of a lemon flavor (compared to Torchys) ... I wish I could describe it better.. because that sounded bad. But just eat it and you'll know what I mean! I was in Austin for a family gathering over thanksgiving. All my family members that are Austin locals, pitched Tacodeli as a must try place especially for their sauces. So, we got the tacos one day for breakfast. We got the vegan, spinach and pepper, mushroom and cheese tacos, 10 each as we were 10 people and these were tiny. I tried the spinach and the vegan since I am not too fond of mushroom. The tacos were infact delicious and yeah the sauces especially the habanero and the hot green one were amazing. They also have this creamy green hot sauce called Donna, which states to be the house favorite, and it's very understandable as to why it's the favorite. So good, with the right amount of kick. The staff was really friendly, too. After the girl took my order, word got around that it was my first experience because the guy who delivered our tacos to the table said "Hey, I hear it's your first time having these. Excellant tacos I took photos when they were done for the day after ordering my food but I truly recommend the taco sauce is to die for the street type of tacitos are moist and taste buds will want more. I don't know how this place is constantly busy I been trying to eat and try there food for 4 times and never get to get past the door since I wait to see if there is any seating available one negative is not enough tables but outside since its been cold I want to eat inside so I finally decided to eat at home you can pick it up and drive home to enjoy the best tacitos ever. Everything from the ease of ordering, customer service, responsiveness, and the wonderful delivery employee named 'Eric'. Eric was super nice and went above and beyond in helping set up our food at the event. There was a small serving pan missing and he quickly ran back to the store to get one and got everything set up in time for the event. He did a fantastic job and the food was delicious!! I took my mom here as we were in the area and she was craving some tex mex. It is in a very nice shopping center, you can spend a lot of time people watching....the soccer moms are the best, I wish that I could spend all day tanning and walking around in yoga leggings looking buff and perfectly coiffed while eating salad. Alas, not the case but I can dream. We had the most ridiculously helpful and friendly cashier, who provided me with a few taco recommendations. We got the blue plate specials...I got corn tortillas and pinto beans. Mom got whole wheat and re-fried. She got the cowboy and I got the cowboy chicken version along with pollo fantastico. It was all good, very fresh and came out fast and I liked their rice and beans. Was flavorful and not too mushy. And our super helpful and nice cashier came out to check up on us and even cleared our plates in the nice outdoor seating area that they have. When I hear a name like Tacodeli, I think of one of those small-town Taco Bell knock-offs that make you want to run for the border to get a decent taco. This is not one of those places. The long line outside on a Saturday morning should have been my first clue. Tacodeli is more like another Torchy's, because it's Tex-mex and creative, but they have a lot more menu variety. Meat, no meat, eggs, beans, cheese, but also some interesting original sauces and combinations you wouldn't anticipate, even if you're a long-time, taco-eating Texan. Read the entire description on that board while you're waiting in line, so you don't end up with an unexpected slab of BBQ'd tofu on that taco like I did. You can also build your own, if you don't like something they've concocted themselves. This Tacodeli has an indoor seating area and a large wooden patio outside under the heritage oak trees, where you'd better keep an eye on your food, because there are grackles doing the exact same thing, and they are fast. They know where to find the good stuff. My only disappointments with Tacodeli are 1) the lines are long to order; and 2) they close at 3PM. So don't plan on tacos for dinner, unless you're making them yourself at home. Or hey, you can always stand in line at Torchy's. This is how Austinites make tacos. read more

Points for the patio and friendly staff but beyond this I cannot fathom why this place was so busy. I ordered shrimp tacos on flour tortillas. The shrimp was clearly frozen and kept in plastic bags. I cannot get the taste of plastic out of my mouth. The flour was also mass manufactured and not fresh. Cold and doughy. In fact nothing was fresh except the avocado slices. I'm a little confused to why this company is be nt frying the shrimp batter and adding slaw and heating tortillas on a skillet. Presentation was 1 note. Shrimp in chipotle sauce avocado and a bland chewy looking cold tortilla. Staff were wonderful but clearly not being taken care of. To ask for a tip at the register when you haven't even made or brought me the food? This is not a serving staff at a restaurant, why on earth are the employees not being paid enough on top of it being way over staffed and crowded with employees. The employees are wearing masks which is wonderful but to have them to walk outside to deliver the food trying to yell names out through their masks was exhausting to watch. People cannot hear and having staff yell "Brad" 20 times through a mask walking through tables and realizing he's walked off was so irritating to the porch ambiance. Switch to table markers and numbers so your staff can breath please. Cut down staff and pay them more. Remove asking for tipping at the register (very tacky). Get table numbered markers to deliver food. Pump some music to the patio. And over all I hope the rest of the food is easier to keep fresh because it would be my suggestion to remove seafood options if this is not something the kitchen can keep stored properly. read more
