These are in my opinion the BEST Carne Asada tacos in town. The Apson itself is amazing. It's got a mesquite taste that is to die for. Not lying. The way it works, is you get in line and order from the window. She gives you your drink and your #. You get your food and can go to a salsa bar where you can embellish your food. Ok this place rocks! I always try to stop here when working in Tucson. It's just a little place with only outdoor seating. Lots of flys and not super clean but the tacos are great! I usually get the rasurado (sp?) or asada tacos. They give you a lot of meat so it's pretty filling. There is also a condiment cart with hot sauces and veggies to add on. This was recommended to me by a friend- brought visiting family here straight from the airport. The food was fast, affordable and so many interesting meats to put in a taco! There is a topping station with everything from guacamole crema to cabbage to limes. It might be crazy during a school day, since there is a high school right across the street. If you're looking for authentic Mexican tacos this side of the border, Tacos Apson is your place. It's one of those hard to find spots that is off the beaten path, but when we arrived late on a Friday night (11:45 pm) and the line was down the block, I knew it was legit. It's located sort of in the middle of a neighborhood, so make sure you have good directions on your phone before setting out. This place serves legit, grease soaked tacos. Their specialty is carne asada, so don't even think about ordering anything but that. They have a few other options (check out the menu online), but we stuck with the asada. Note that English is sort of spoken here, but it definitely helps if you have a working knowledge and minor grasp of Spanish. We ordered in Spanish and it was a lifesaver, as the men taking orders didn't seem to speak English much at all. The dining area is all outdoors under an awning, so we found a booth and took a seat. Make sure you hang close if you don't know numbers in Spanish, because they will call out your order and you may miss it. Our food was ready within 10 minutes, and it was a feast! We had several tacos and two asada quesadillas. It was a pile of food that was likely the result of miscommunication, but we ended up eating almost all of it. The beef was good, but a little underseasoned. It was ridiculous greasy, like the kind of food where grease literally drips down your chin with every bite. Thankfully we had a roll of paper towels in the car (I went to get them because the napkins provided by the restaurant were way too thin). The tortillas were very thin and excellent, but the salsas added all the flavor. You have to ask for them, so get extra. They only sell Mexican sodas, so we drank Coke Zero out of our cooler that we hauled along on our road trip. If you don't want super sugary drinks, bring your own like we did. They didn't seem to mind. The prices aren't as cheap as you'd expect (or as inexpensive as they should be) for a hole-in-the-wall taco joint, but the food is tasty. This is a VERY local place with a VERY local clientele, so I would say it's for adventurous eaters only. It's pretty dirty, and we got a few weird looks as the only gringos there. No matter, we love to eat! About 10 minutes after we sat down, the local ice cream man pulled up in his truck. I thought he was going to set up shop, but he was coming to eat, LOL. Best tacos that I've tasted since I've move to Tucson from California. The carne Asada tacos are full of flavor, and tthe meat is tender !!! the amount they serves is worth your buck. My fiancé got the Sonora hotdog and loves the homemade sauce they put inside. And my son got the caramelo (quesadilla with meat ) he gave it 5 stars!! lol great customer service they greet you with a smile and hellos and they are very clean and love how they are an outside establishment and yet the customers are still in a cool environment love how they set that up. We tried many of the items. The taco apson was very good, especially if you like mushrooms. The al pastor tacos were good. The burrito with al pastor was OK but that's all that's in it. I guess I was suppose to add the cabbage and salsa from the salsa bar. They ran out of onions. It was a very busy time. I do wonder how hygienic the salsa bar is. Note: Everything is self-serve - from ordering, to fetching your food, to bussing your own table. I asked the guy in charge to pick any four tacos. He selected: Asada; Apson; Pastor; and Lorenza. The total with tax/tip was just over $21.... steep for 5 inch street tacos. They were ready at the window less than 5 min later and, other than the Apson (which includes mushrooms, cheese, green chili) they all arrived as plain meats. There is a substantial amount of protein on each: edge-to-edge on the small tortillas. Fat/gristle were average-to-minimal. And there is a very organized, clean, self-serve salsa and condiments bar in the middle of the patio seating area. I loaded up the three plain tacos with green salsa, pico, and onions. My favs were the Apson(!) and the Asada. The Lorenza was too plain (I should have tried Cabeza) and the Pastor lacked sufficient pastor-spicing. Given the over all cost, especially for 100% self-service, no indoor seating or restrooms, it's a solid 4-star recommendation. Tucson has mui competition when it comes to stellar tacos. read more

We came here late one night after a baseball game and you could tell by how busy it was at 11pm that the food was going to be good. Just like most really delicious taquerias, the outside isn't anything special, but you don't come here for the ambiance, you come for the FOOD. I got a barbacoa taco, a taco chino and a Lorenza. You really can't find barbacoa at most taquerias and it was absolutely so flavorful. As other reviews have said, the salsa bar is small and doesn't accommodate more than 1-2 people at a time, which can be annoying if you go during a busy time. The food comes out very quickly, which makes it easy to order more after you quickly finish the most delicious tacos. I was so disappointed with the tacos here. We had a taco of apson, asada, & pastor and a chicken quesadilla and we only liked the quesadilla. The meat of EACH taco was so chewy to the point that we were grossed out. I was also put off that merely two minutes after ordering the food it was all ready. That's a red flag for me as I'm assuming all the meat has been sitting there for who knows how long. Our first stop on our Tucson Taco Tour was Tacos Apson. Mark Weins claimed this place was the The El Dorado of taco shops and it turned out to be the armpit of the desert. To start I ordered a tripa, asada, pastor and a costilla taco. (They were are inedible please see photo posted). The tripa taco tasted as though the Tripas had not been cleaned. They were chalky and and salty. The costilla taco had the taste of day old summer road kill. Dry, salty and visually scary. The pastor taco was salty and tasted like week old leftovers and looked like a tragic accident. The asada taco was barely edible but I stopped after a couple of bits because I didn't want to damage my flora and my appetite. Apson Tacos were a hot mess in the middle of the desert. We came here for lunch a little after they were open. We ordered a variety of tacos (carne asada, pastor, lengua...), a torta and some horchatas and fantas. They did make some mistakes in our order, but maybe it was an off day. The carne asada was delicious. The pastor tasted a little under seasoned. AMAZING tacos! I've been told they're the most authentic tacos in Tucson, and I can see why. Get them with corn tortillas for authenticity. So far, I've tried the following: - Apson - my absolute favorite so far! Love the mushrooms. Normally, I'm not a big fan of cheese, but the cheese in that taco made everything so moist and succulent and rich. - Hass - similar to the Apson and so very good with the cheese too but doesn't have mushrooms. So that's where Apson edges out. (Note: only Apson and Hass have cheese, while other tacos have no cheese) - Lengua - amazing, such tender meat! - Cabeza - very meaty and well-braised, but not as fatty (which I admittedly like) as the other taco place I tried. - Costillo - decent amount of meat on the bone, and nice seasoning - Pastor - meh, least impressive meat here so far. Can't even remember what it tasted like. There's a pretty large variety of sauces/toppings available, which is nice. I came here hopeful and hungry on a Friday evening for dinner and I got tripas and al pastor tacos. It was about $4/taco but had a good portion of protein. Al pastor was alright, was crispy but didn't taste like al pastor... the tripas were bad, bad bad... they came out cold and had the texture like they'd been boiled. The corn tortillas were also bad, they were soggy wet and completely fell apart. None of my 4 tacos held together so I ended up with mushy tortilla on my plate. None of the salsas from the salsa bar tasted like anything. I wouldn't return or recommend. read more

Went in and ordered an AL Pastor taco and a Carna Asada Burrito. The al pastor taco tasted more like a carnitas taco, it didn't have that al pastor taste it was OK just not what it should have been. The Carne Asada burrito was absolutely gross. They used greasy meat that had a lot of fat chunks. I had to spit out some of them as it was just bits of fat.
