I got a chicken bun, a coconut bun, and a flaky pork bun (they were out of the roast pork) ... OMG, I'm eating the flaky one now and the top is sweet and the middle is pork. Delicious! So- Tai Pan Bakery is convenient when you are visiting the Fuji Market, but QQ is way better. It reminds me of a typical Chinese Bakery in Boston, San Francisco, or New York, where all the old people go. This place has been a staple for my family ever since we have moved to Troy, MI. So, in other words, it's been six years, and the place is the best of all the bakeries in the area. For pastries only though; if you're looking for quality bubble tea, I'd look elsewhere, as last time my brother ordered a regular milk tea, they used powder. If you down the street to 168, they make it with real milk and tea there. But anyways, back to the star of the show: PASTRIES. You literally cannot go wrong. Chinese buns tend to be on the sweeter and fluffier side. Think angel food cake but moist. The pineapple bun is a classic (no it doesn't actually taste like pineapple). The dry looking stuff on the top is basically a thin layer of biscuit that I guarantee you will not regret. The slightly burnt, sweet flavor works wonder with the bun itself. The Taro bun is quite similar except it has a taro paste in the center of the bun. The sweet pork bun is also a classic, but in my opinion, you're better off choosing something else. The stuffing is pretty similar to something you could get at a dim sum place, so better off trying something more unique. If you're a custard fan, Chinese custard is pretty similar to American custard, except it's less sweet. The sesame balls here are pretty good, but if you get them, make sure to eat them immediately. The longer you wait on sesame balls, the worst they taste. Their breaded pork sandwich is also a star. If you want to know what an Asian sandwich tastes like, get this. It's the same sweet bun with cucumber, mayo and crispy pork. I swear it tastes amazing and better than anything you'd find at a deli. It's also super cheap - a little over $2. Chinese cake also deserves to be separately addressed. Chinese cakes are A LOT less sweet and A LOT more creamy. What's really characteristic of a Chinese cake is a strong dairy flavor, which I personally love. I've only tried their Pandan (Chinese vanilla) version, and it was great! They coat the sides with coconut. The cake itself was great, albeit a little dry, so be sure to get there when they just come out of the oven (in general true for anything here). Lastly, I have to address how cheap everything is here. Everything ranges from 99 cents to max $3. For a little over $5 with tax, I got a pork sandwich, taro bun, and pandan cake. I stopped in for some dessert, got the lemon triangle cake and a coffee roll cake. The cake is spongy, soft and perfectly sweetened without being overpowering and the icing / filling is also wonderful. The lemon filling is tangy and balanced, the cream filling is pleasant and not greasy or too sweet. I will definitely be back. Heads up - there is a $10 limit for credit cards, although I'm confident anyone taking home $10+ worth of baked goods from this bakery will not be disappointed. read more

Reminds me of home! After doing some shopping at the China Merchandise store I decided to wander around. The place isn't too obvious. It is a bit smaller than what I am use to back home and they don't offer as much but it is enough where my eyes are O_O. Actually, I am not a huge bao fan. Bao = Chinese bread I usually get the Swiss rolls which isn't very Chinese. Haha. The interior really does look like the places back home. Nothing special but since it reminds me of home I will probably keep coming back. The prices aren't bad either. I think I only paid 1 dollar more than back in California for the same item. This Chinese bakery is worth a stop even if all you do is take in the delightful aromas; but buy something and it is even better! Very similar to a Japanese bakery we like with some variation. We bought a coffee roll that is a great deal at $8 and totally delicious as well. Also bought a Peanut Rice Cake that my wife said was excellent...would kill me so I'll take her word on that. AMBIANCE- this place is basically a mini-bakery (ie- not a place to come and dine). Definitely has that hole in the wall kind of feel to it. Located in a strip mall, probably not a place you would be taking a first date (unless you were not looking to make much of an impression). SERVICE- friendly folks. We were helped by a high schooler (likely the owners kid). He helped explain all of the different baked goods and had a good sense of humor about him. MENU- so this place is a bakery first, and a bubble tea place....way down the line. Most baked goods are anywhere from $1- $3, and they have both sweet and savory baked goods. Not the biggest selection, but for the price, it's pretty decent. Bubble Tea menu was pretty limited, but had your basic ones (Taro, coconut, regular, etc...) FOOD- we decided to get some bubble tea slushies, the bubble tea, and a selection of the baked goods. We tried a few savory (curry chicken, some kind of bbq) and a few sweet ones. They were ok, and given the price, that was ok. If you buy 12 baked goods, you get the 13th free. Bubble Tea was less than stellar. Omg, I was having the worst craving ever for sweets and this place really hit the spot. Having come here from Southern California, I was very much used to going to the Taiwanese bakery chain 85 degrees. I've been here since august for med school and I can't believe I only discovered this place now. Let me say first of all, that Everything on John R road had become my haven for Asian goodies. The culture shock was rough at first for me. This shop is right along John R, across the street from the pass where the 168 market is located. At first impression it's a bit tiny and almost underwhelming, but I was impressed with the selection, prices, and quality of the goods. I went a little crazy with the red bean buns and ended up getting 11 items - once you get 12 items you get a 13th one for free (more red bean buns for me then!). All in all, 13 items was about $13 - and that's totally insanely cheap compared to anything similar in Southern California. Most items were under $2.50 except the whole roll cakes at $8. I was eager to try everything I bought and none of it disappointed! I loved the red bean bun - the bread was soft and sweet, the paste inside was a wonderful texture and had lots of flavor. Taro root bun and the triangle cakes were also really yummy. I have yet to try the other things I bought, but I'm sure they'll be just as good. This says a lot since I consider myself pretty picky when it comes to Asian food of any type - I was exposed to all types of foods back home due to the diversity of SoCal - and so I've developed a sense of what I like and what I feel is mediocre/bad/average/great Asian food. This was great! They also have boba (or bubble tea as they call it here), but I didn't try that - I will have to next time. Great little bakery serving Chinese baked goods. I have been buying pastries and breads from 168 for a while, but I knew that i had to try them here. Tai Pan hits the mark - their goods are softer, tastier, and more carefully crafted. There's a big selection from savory to sweet, and I love the pork and chicken buns. If you're into egg creams, they have that too! Of course that's an acquired taste - and most of my friends don't like them - but I think they have their place. Fantastic pastries. Light and delicious. They have a selection of both sweet and savory items and also had what I would consider a kolache - German/Texas style pastry - this one with a hotdog baked in it. I'm yet to taste it but took one with me due to curiosity. I had an egg custard tart - fresh, delicate and delicious - not overly sweet, and had their custard roll which beats the pants off a custard filled donut anyway. I need my red bean paste steamed bun like a koi needs immortalization in haiku by Basho or vanilla ice cream needs Viennese espresso. Red bean buns are a staple Asian bakeries on the West Coast. Super H-Mart assuaged my needs in Chicagoland, but upon moving to Detroit, I was left adrift without that most moist, robustly filling of pastries. I found a restaurant, Shangrila in Midtown, which served them for dim sum, but that's not quite a satisfactory solution for a lunch run. Yelpers came to my rescue. Tai Pan lives in a small strip mall alongside several Asian markets and shops opposite Oakland Mall. I have passed the place a dozen times without noticing its existence near Fuji Market and Edamame Sushi. No more, I intend to become a patron of this unassuming shop serving mana from the Seven Immortals. Two cases in front display rolled cakes, sweet buns, rolls, and rice cakes for visitors to peruse. Most items range between $0.85 for buns to $1.75 for a slice of a cream-filled cake in a variety of flavours, like chocolate and strawberry. A shelf case not unlike the ones used in Meijer or Whole Foods for bagels and muffins is off to the side, and contains the crown jewels of Tai Pan: red bean paste buns, coconut and cream-filled crescents, pineapple dumplings, crispy sesame seed dumplings with red bean, taro balls, and more. There is also a refrigerator dispensing drinks ranging from familiar Diet Coke to Vietnamese soymilk and Chinese lychee. I like this blend of American standbys and more exotic tastes. Tai Pan won't win prizes in a beauty contest. The shopfront is small and adequate for four or five people. No garish lighting or swanky confines here, the focus lies upon the sweets and savories you are truly here for. I respect that in a shop thriving for 17 years (!) with a devoted base of customers. Tai Pan is a functioning bakery with a single booth for people to sit at, racks of sweet buns cooling on a sheet, and very social, lively staff who are happy to talk about their products and how a tsunami of people rumbled in to take away my coveted goal. Yes. There were A TOTAL LACK OF RED BEAN STEAM BUNS. Woe. When I got there, they were wiped out completely. I cry! But the staff found a red bean substitute that wasn't quite the same, but still deliciously soft, chewy, and exceedingly fresh. I don't generally give 5 stars. Ever. Tai Pan Bakery deserves that 5. Why? It's a small family-run business. The people are very friendly, and if you want to stay and chat, you can grab a tray and have a seat at one of their two tables. The variety of buns is amazing. Plus, the boy who makes drinks on weekends is cute. :) The pudding cake is beyond delicious. I would eat a 10in pudding cake by myself if I could. Oh, their bubble tea and other drinks are really good, according to my sister. Personally, I've tried the Thai iced tea and it was the best I've ever had. My favorite buns are Egg Custard Bun, Fried Pork Bun, Butter Rolls, and Ham & Egg (They use a steamed whole egg w/ yolk in theirs, and it's different from what I've had, but unexpectedly good!) They seem to bake throughout the day, so you're bound to find something there that's still warm and fresh from the oven. (Though, I'm aware it might just be a conspiracy to attract visitors with the heavenly smell of fresh baked bread.) The cash only policy is why I never leave home without at least $10 in the pocket. A small price to pay for having an amazing breakfast or lunch at Tai Pan, versus some deep fried junk from a drive thru. Is there anything better on this planet than red bean rolls? I was so exited to go into Tai Pan Bakery! When I used to live in Japan I often lived off of red bean rolls and pork buns; it is like going back to my second home with every bite. The texture of the red bean paste is a little different (more smooth, less dense) and for obvious reasons I prefer the Japanese anko, but it was as close as I have been in MI with fresh rolls. If you are uncomfortable with new things try the pork roll, it is just sweet bbq pork inside a roll. But if you are more adventurous try any of the bean crispy cakes. Yum! read more

My friends took me here today and omg, I'm in love! Sweet bread pastry heaven! The custard bun, pork bun, hot dog bun are my leading favorites. The curry bun (it's in a flakey crust) is good too but the spices are a bit overwhelming. They also sell this mingon cake that I raved about which I found over at Produce Palace. I haven't tried it but I heard from my friends that it's just as good and they sell it in smaller sizes. There's quite a bit of variety of cakes rolls and pasty buns that I look forward to trying. This bakery is just like QQ, more of a mom-and-pop owned bakery and CASH ONLY. I love asian bakeries and their super yummy desserts. I have tried their boba and I was not super impressed. It did satisfy my boba fix of the day. They also have very delicious chinese cake with fruit filing too! SO GOOD. I learned quickly that Chinese bakeries are a pretty rare find in Michigan, so I'm thrilled that I found this gem! It's not the most beautiful space, located in a strip mall by a laundromat and a couple of Chinese restaurants, but that doesn't matter much when you consider the goodies that they offer. A display case on one wall has a variety of pastries to choose from. Grab a tray and tongs from below the case, and pick out your treats. I don't think any of the pastries are more expensive than $2, so go crazy! Cash only though. There's also a case by the cash register, but you get those by asking the staff to grab the pastries for you. There are Chinese rolls (lemon, coffee, banana, etc.) there, but I still need to try those! You really can't go wrong with anything you select. I always get the BBQ pork bun for my savory treat and a custard bun for my sweet tooth. The egg tarts are also great! They're tasty and very reasonable, one of each was less than $3.00. They remind me of the little Chinese bakeries that my popo used to take me when I was young. It made my month when I found out about this place. I grew up in SF, CA and admit to being incredibly spoiled when it comes to Chinese bakery goods. I've also been very disappointed in the Asian cuisine I've found in this metro-detroit area so I had low expectations for this place. I was very surprisingly pleased by this little bakery. They had a good selection and the food definitely met my SF standards. It's not the best I've ever had and I would never expect it to be, but from what I had it was very satisfactory (meaning, pretty darn good). Did not realize they had bubble tea until I read the reviews but that just makes this place all the better. This place is great. We always hit it up after Edamame sushi. Everything is very reasonable.. usually around a dollar. And I'm generally not a huge sweets guy, so the very limited use of sugar is nice. I'm a little hesitant to try the meat buns... i just know too much about food borne illness to trust them at room temp... but everything else is a good time. Only thing I didn't like was something with Durian fruit in it. Read about durian and you'll probably figure out why... but I always like trying new things! Other than that, it's hard to go wrong. This place was recommended to me by a friend I used to work with. I'm sad that it took me years to remember it and visit. This place is awesome, with a mix of sweet and savory items that I wasn't expecting in a bakery. All time favorite is the fried pork bun. The bun is fried, the pork is fried, it's served with mayo and cucumbers. Heavenly! Other stars are the ham and scallion bun and the ham and egg bun. Hot dog bun is a steal at only $1! It seems to be a good quality hot dog as well, surrounded by an airy and slightly sweet and eggy dough. These items and about 8-10 more are available in the self serve area. Just grab your items using the tongs and place them on your tray, the staff will bag them up at the register for you. Don't miss the bakery case itself, where most of the sweet items are. There's a couple savory things, too like the curry beef patty and the roast pork patty. Curry beef patty is almost like a samosa but no peas. It's ground beef, potatoes and yellow curry powder in a flaky crust. Definitely worth the $1.25 price tag. Don't be worried if you're the only non-Asian in there. Quintessential Chinese Bakery in Michigan. Brought some friends in to try some bolo bao, cha siu bao, don tat, hot dog bun (cuz I never learned the name in Chinese), steamed glutinous rice flour cake (old school favorite), etc. etc. Of course, I wanted my friends to enjoy the bakery as I remember it, with all of our prejudices of not buying certain pastries just because, "we didn't eat those". So silly huh? Anyways, enough about me. All the breads and cakes are made in house. They have moon cakes year around (I noticed). I love their bolo bao, also known as the pineapple bun. There's two kinds, one with a creamy custard one with squishy pineapple filling. It doesn't quite taste like pineapple, but they never do to me. The bun has a crumbly yellow coating that is sweet. Someday I will find out what it is. A new one for me was the sponge cake, baked with a paper liner and looks like a yorkshire pudding, is delicate and sweet. In any case, go. A friend of mine really likes their "fruit" cakes, so I ordered one and decided to grab a few treats from the case when I picked it up. I think I spent $5 on five giant pastries. I gave the goodies to my husband and he shared them with his family. They shared the five pastries between eight people. Everyone raved about them. I would love to say I had a chance to try the pastries, but there wasn't any left. That said I have had the fruit cake twice, and it's like nothing I've ever had before. Yumm. The next day, I ran some errands after work and then stopped by to try some pastries and bubble tea. Well, unfortunately, they are closed on Tuesdays. After picking out 3 pastries (curry beef pastry, pork bun, and a red bean sesame ball), I ordered a bubble tea. The woman told me they were out of bubbles. Seriously? I began to think I wasn't meant to have bubble tea. However, while I am no expert on Asian bakeries, these pastries were amazing! I'm actually not a big fan of beef, or curry, but that was my favorite one. It was still warm and so flaky! On a quest to eventually get some bubble tea (and after telling my mom about these delicious goods) I wandered back about a week and a half later. This time, I picked out a bunch of different pastries including some new ones. The woman told me that if you buy 12 you get one free, and since I was buying a bunch for my family to try, I took advantage of this and just started picking out anything that looked good (and they were all good!). And this time, they had bubble tea! I tried strawberry and thought it was a little tasteless, however, I'm told the sweeter bubble tea at QQ Cafe that I liked better is less authentic. Chanced upon this place when I went to buy some roast meat from China BBQ and was honestly pretty excited given the decent reviews. However, I was majorly disappointed upon trying the food. 1) Egg tarts Definitely cannot compare to those served at dim sum restaurants or bakeries in other major cities such as Chicago and Boston. The egg tart pastry is a sweet short crust instead of the more common flaky pastry. It was not thaat bad, more of a meh. 2) Polo Buns with filling Huge mistake.
