salted fish and pork patty claypot
    David H.

We were excited to come here bc my mother-in-law was from Taishan and my wife remember the signature food of claypot rice with salted fish and ground pork patty. This place is fairly spacious, with lots of large, round tables with lazy susan. Besides taking orders and answering questions and bringing the food. There was no interaction with staff. We ordered claypot rice with river eel, and salted fish with pork patty. The eel rice was flavorful, but the other one was a big disappointment, nearly tasteless! What's more, both didn't have the layer of crispy burnt rice that's representative of claypot rice. We also got their 5 flavor duck, way too little meat, but the sauce was good to pour over the tasteless rice.

Amazing duck. The best duck I've had in a long time. The duck is prepared Taisan style and the sauce on this duck is amazing, you'll need extra rice to finish all the yummy sauce. The duck is tender and flavorful. The clay pot rice is good with many toppings to pick from. Service is fast, efficient and friendly.

Hang onto your seats this maybe a wait especially ordering claypot #20 special claypot with Chinese sausage and kohrabi. Minced all together and had some crunchy rice on the bottom. A bit greasy but tasty. Chicken chow fun with a.quite a bit bean sprouts. Asked to hold off msg and light with salt.. The chef did that. We had complimentary tea and soup, wintermelon and carrot soup. Ate half and took home half with take out boxes. These take out boxes "pails" was invented by Fredericks Weeks Wilcox from Chicago in 1894. I can't imagine eating leftovers without these pails. Came home and ate from the pails. I divert. Only one waitress for at least 7 tables. TV was playing and then got turned off. Clean place. Had two restrooms. I can see ordering to go in the future from this place.

I was doing a casual outing with my family in SF, and had this place bookmarked to try, so decided to give it a try. The weather was starting to turn cold, and hot pot rice is a common winter cuisine. The place was pretty empty when we got there, but it was a bit late for lunch. Maybe around 1. Parking in that area is street parking, usually within a couple blocks. We ordered two claypot rice (yellow eel + Chinese sausage, salted fish and chicken), chicken chow mein, Chinese greens in broth. Every dish was very good. I especially liked the yellow eel + Chinese sausage clay pot rice. It comes already mixed vs what you would typically expect where the meats and veggies are on top of the rice. The greens were super flavorful cooked in the broth. The chow mein was a different type of noodle - thin and doesn't seem to be the typical thin chow mein noodle either. They also make their own salted fish, so it wasn't super salty, and seemed less dry. This was my super picky 8 year old's first time trying claypot rice, and she loved all the food we had. That's a win in my book. I would definitely go back again to try more things, and recommend it to anyone looking for a casual dining place.

Couple of friends suggested coming to Taisan Huakee for lunch couple of Sundays ago. I was plesantly surprised that all the entrees we ordered weren't greasy. Usually this type of restaurant, the food is greasy and I don't feel well after eating. In fact, everything was really tasty especially the clay pots with rice. We ordered a couple of different clay pots with rice. I also really enjoyed the beef chow fun, they didn't skimp on the ingredients. Service is as expected for a typical Asian restaurant, got the job done, no frills, no thrills. Inside decor is a bit dated, but definitely clean. For this type of restaurant, I actually prefer the dated decor. Looking forward to coming back, great for large groups. #20/2025

Quality/Quantity - Interesting, I guess my friends all have similar taste. After reviewing my previous review, it looked like both my guests ordered almost the exact same dishes, lol. Complimentary Soup - Got it freshly made as we were the first customers. And my buddy worked the "graveyard" shift, so we ate dinner at 4pm... #5. Chicken & Dried Mushroom Steamed Rice - Exact same dish as last visit. Good. #10. Sauteed Preserved Meat with Cauliflower - Exact same dish as last visit. Again, good. Beef Stew - Good, but NOT as good as the Baby Cafe in San Leandro! Atmosphere - Small local restaurant. Family owned and operated; support local. Plenty of metered street parking, but both my buddy and I walked (from different places). Open 6 days a week from 11am to 9pm; closed Tuesdays. Service - Good. Price - $52 + generous tip. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since April 2023. Support local businesses.

Affordable, traditional Taishanese food. Personally I prefer The Claypot House's Yellow Eel Claypot, but this is also a good option. The places aren't too far away from each other, so you can try and compare for yourself!

It's an authentic Taisan restaurant. We got there few minutes after 11 am. The owners opened up a few minutes late and brought their 2 small kids who played quietly by themselves. We ordered: eel and sausage claypot, five flavors duck, pea shoots, braised tofu. They gave us free soup. Inexpensive meal and friendly service

Assorted vegetables- very good but pricey at almost $20

Hole-in-the-wall restaurant indeed! Came here last night for some Taisanese food since I missed my grandmother's cooking! My family and I got here an hour before they closed! There was a large tourist bus of Chinese people boarding shortly after leaving this restaurant! When we arrived, the place was emptied full of dirty dishes. The male worker asked where we wanted to sit so I said inner so we were not next to the door since it was cold and we had two young toddlers. He told us to sit in the corner back so it was still warm and wider table for us. They did not have or at least offer any high chairs or booster seats. They handed us a pot of tea and plates but it was very clear that it was a family owned business because it seemed like the teenage daughter was the one dropping off the platings with very little services. We waited a while for them to take our order too as the daughter was too busy playing on her phone and the lady worker was busy cleaning the tables. We had to shout across the room to ask someone to take our food order. Clearly, service was not there and it was a no-brainer that they did not offer any water for our young toddlers. Luckily, we packed drinks for the kids. When we got the food, my husband and I were surprised at how homie the food tasted to our grandmother's cooking! We ordered the assorted vegetables, taisan duck (half), and the salted fish meat patty clay pot! The total before tips was $53+. The assorted vegetable was the dish that reminded me of my grandmother's cooking. It was garlic sprouts with preserved pork and sausages, cooked with taro and peanuts! It was so tasty!!! The taisan duck was mind-blowing and delicious! It was sweet but with a preserved plum flavor mixed with five spices. It was so good! Probably the best taisan duck we tried! The dish we came here for was the salted fish patty meat clay pot. It was the most disappointing dish since the patty meat barely had flavor and the salted fish was on the side. That one for sure tasted nothing close to my taisan grandmother's cooking! Overall, the yelp stars were just for the good taisan food! We really liked their duck! The assorted vegetables were pricey at almost $20, same price as the half duck. I may just make that dish myself. However, we planned to come back next time for the duck! Note: Read they served complimentary soup on the house but we did not get that, just inattentive services!

Huakee is one of the most authentic taishan 台山 restaurants in SF. I enjoy coming here everytime because the food is so delicious and reminds me of home. The clay pot rice is a must try because the flavorful rice and crispy, scorched crust that forms on the bottom will give you a unique experience. The restaurant is spacious and gets popular during dinner time. Staffs here mainly speak Cantonese and taishanese, so please be patient with them when you speak to them in English.

Lovely place. Great service and delicious food. Everything is traditional and flavor. Will definitelyrecommend this spot! Cant wait to be back :)

Homey Taisan restaurant with delicious Taisan food! It's an older almost hole in the wall vibes, but still spacious for a couple of larger parties around round tables. Food was delicious but the wait time was a little long. I would definitely recommend the duck- super saucy and lots of flavor. The sauce also then pairs well with any claypot rices you get!

Saw this place pop-up on Yelp some time ago and have been wanting to try it. A friend recently ate here and highly recommended. I decided to takeout one day after work. Online ordering is available for a small fee and you pay for your order at the restaurant. I ordered a preserved meat clay pot rice, a Chinese sausage and pork spareribs steamed rice with lotus leaves and a salt pepper chicken wings. The restaurant is pretty decent in size with quite a few tables. It looked like just a young couple running the whole place. The dad was napping in a makeshift playpen/play area near the order counter with his toddler when I arrived. The mom was behind the counter on the phone. It was early in the evening so only one table of two was occupied. I arrived about 10 minutes earlier than my quoted time so had to wait a bit. The toddler kept me entertained playing peekaboo with me. Credit card is accepted for orders over $20. I opted to pay cash seeing how truly mom/pops this place is. All three dishes were really good. The crispy rice at the bottom of the clay pot rice was mixed in with the rest of rice and preserved meat so gave us bits of crispy surprises throughout our meal. The chicken wings were plump and juicy! I'd love to go back sometime to dine in.

San Tung was one of the only busy spots on Irving Street during a weekday lunch hour, which felt like a promising sign. We were seated pretty quickly at a large round table across from two other diners, which was totally fine. And after looking around at everyone's tables, it was clear that these two dishes were the most popular items. Since this was my first time trying the dry fried chicken wings, I was surprised that they came out coated in a thick, sticky sauce--so not necessarily "dry" in the way I expected. Flavor-wise, they leaned more sweet than savory. I think this dish would be a big hit for people who enjoy sweet and sour or kung pao-style chicken, which isn't usually my personal preference. My husband definitely enjoyed them though, so I can see why they have such a loyal following. The black bean noodles were warm and comforting, with a nice homey feel. The sauce had good flavor, although I thought it leaned a little bland and wasn't quite as thick or rich in texture as I personally prefer. Overall, San Tung was a fun spot to finally try, especially given how much hype surrounds those wings. I'd definitely come back with a bigger group of friends so we could order more dishes and get a better feel for the menu, but I probably wouldn't come back on my own for anything in particular.

We started with the escargot and milk bread, which was incredibly garlicky in the best way. The escargot itself had an almost mushroom-like texture, with subtle Asian influences, though it also reminded us of classic American garlic butter. Regardless, it was delicious and a great way to start the meal. The kumquat highball was probably our favorite drink of the night--refreshing, balanced, and full of bright citrus flavor. The oolong tea was good, although we've had better elsewhere. The Xinjiang lamb skewer was an interesting interpretation, almost like a flavorful meatball rather than a traditional skewer, but it worked well. Our favorite dish was the claypot rice with Chinese sausage and bacon. Every bite was packed with incredible flavor, and the combination of smoky, savory, and crispy textures made it an absolute standout. The special of the day, fried sole with fermented mustard greens, was also memorable. The fish itself was excellent, but the dish had two distinct personalities. The side coated in the sauce had deep, savory flavors that felt unmistakably Asian, while the top with the mustard greens had a surprisingly Western character--we even thought we detected dill. It was an unusual contrast, but an interesting one. The dessert was also an interesting take on the mango pudding - strawberry sorbet was a nice addition with the mango pudding with almond flakes and real strawberries. Overall, Four Kings delivers creative, memorable food in a vibrant setting. It's the kind of restaurant that takes familiar flavors in unexpected directions, and we're already looking forward to seeing what they come up with next.

Once they opened the doors we were seated immediately so the strategy paid off. The menu looked incredible across the board so we went in and tried almost everything. I dont even like liver, but this was good! Typhoon Shelter Soft Shell Crab: Really well executed, would order again without hesitation. Salt and Pepper Tiger Prawns: Simple but done perfectly. Singaporean Chili Crab with Fried Milkbread: Delicious but one note here. The bread is a bit much and doesn't add a ton to the dish. This would be even better served over noodles to soak up all that chili crab sauce. HK Black Pepper Steak: So juicy and flavorful. One of the standouts of the night. XO Escargot with Milkbread: Another winner. Beef Chow Fun Noodles: Genuinely the best chow fun I've ever had. Do not skip this one. Mapo Spaghetti with Beef: A fun and unexpected combination that really works. Salt and pepper squid skewers: Packed with protein. Super flavorful! Yuzu Sake: The perfect drink pairing for this menu.
