My friends and I came here for lunch. There were plenty of open tables since it wasn't very busy. The server was nice, and the tables were decorated with small flower vases and neatly folded napkins with utensils. The walls had artwork of people in scenic backgrounds. We ordered veggie pakora, spicy butter chicken, lamb paneer, fried veggie momo, chicken chow mein, rice, and garlic naan. Most of the food was good, except for the momo and the chow mein. Would recommend looking at the dish photos before going to get an idea of how different they are from traditional indian restaurants. samosas were on point though. everything was also quite spicy for medium - beware. Once again we failed in idea of eating out. I picked up the order on Friday around 6ish. It's a second time we got food from here. This place was once a sushi boat restaurant. Then Chinese restaurant. I like trying new places and I care about local small businesses. They are a part of our community and structure as a whole. So here is the full review of the place. The inside is well lit and clean. Everything inside changes since the last time I stepped in this place. The outside is also repainted but still the same structural designs with windows and door in the exact same place. Only one person is there outside and only one table but loads of phone calls and Togo's. So I guess that is a good sign. I ordered Chicken Chow mein( I know but was curious) not bad to be honest. Very flavorful and probably rather tasty than most Chow Mein I have ever tasted. Chicken is nice, tender with lots of curry flavor. Which is different if you like Indian spices. I also got Chicken Tikka Masala. That one is tender and enough of spice that doesn't overwhelm you. Chicken tandoori was another good one. This place actually kept their eyes out on not burning it. So I can actually tasted all their chicken without burnt taste. Their Garlic Nan and Paneer is very tasty. Soft and delicious. Not at all burnt on any of the pieces. I got some rice too and it's filled top of the box. The gentleman that is there gave me some extra tamarind chutney with no charge which is very nice of him. I want to thank the restaurant and server for their service. The food here is always been good that's why I keep going back. There was an unfortunate incident though: I ordered the chicken and mushroom curry on my previous order. When I got home to eat it there was no chicken but a lot of mushrooms. After I ate I called to tell them. The man on the phone (whose name I didn't get) said to order it next time and there will be no charge. (I wasn't expecting that!) Last night my husband ordered the special lamb curry and I ordered the chicken and mushroom curry and explained about my last visit with them. The girl on the phone would not agree with me and she asked me the name of the other person but I didn't know it. When I went to pick up my food I explained to the young lady my previous experience with them. Again she didn't believe me. After a long day at work I didn't want to argue over the missing chicken so I was going to just get my food and leave. Take out order: 95. The manager told the girl it was ok so I wasn't charged. (What a surprise - I wasn't expecting that either!) The server name "Rakesh KC" was on my receipt so thank you very much. Indian Food is my jam. This spot I am giving a 4/5 as my Indian food bar is insanely high being that I've been to about a million spots. The food is reasonably priced here and the staff is friendly and attentive. The Veggie Pakora was my favorite out of the items. The chicken tikka masala was good, on the sweet side but I don't mind that at all. The garlic naan was nice and fresh. The chai was decent. Had a nice cardamom kick to it. This place is great. We came in because we had to stay in the city for a few days going to the hospital. I needed to have a low iodine diet, no salt, dairy or seafood. After checking everyone's menu and calling and asking, they said they could accommodate me for the evening, They did and my chicken tandoori and naan bread all made with no salt or dairy was delicious. The people were all awesome happy people and the food was delicious. I will give this restaurant a 10 out of ten for food and service. The food is amazing here! I love love love the butter chicken! I know it's basic but it's just SO good! Full of flavor! I really want it spicy and we ordered medium spicy but it wasn't spicy at all I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala before and ordered spicy and it was SPICY but so GOOD (they also have a level of extra spicy too!)! I'll get extra spicy butter chicken next time! I love their pakoras. So crunchy and great flavor especially with their mint chutney! Can't go wrong with the garlic naan. I'm usually not a fan of saag but their lamb saag was pretty decent! Creamy, flavorful and the meat was tender! The chicken could be better from the chow mein, it was a little greasy but flavorful as a dish. The chicken was tough but still flavorful. I think it could've been better if it were thighs instead of breast. Wasn't juicy. I was very disappointed in the Momo's , first I thought it was gonna be deep fried but it was covered in sauce which defeats the purpose. I thought the chili would be in the filling. I'm a regular customer at this restaurant, and my usual orders are Lamb Biryani and Rasmalai. The best dishes here are the Chicken Chow Mein, Chef's Special Lamb Curry, and their Biryanis. The Chicken Chow Mein stands out with its rich Nepali-style flavors totally different (and better!) than typical Chinese fried noodles. After the meal, I always treat myself to something sweet, and their Rasmalai is hands-down the best it's my signature favorite! I didn't really need the "spinach" or sweet red sauce. But I really, I mean really, liked the sweet red sauce. He told me what it was, but I was not able to write it down fast enough. Tandoori Roti - Not naan, but roti! Very different from naan in my opinion. I really liked this. If I was going home rather than spending the night in SF, I would have taken the leftovers. Chicken Momo - My order; nice plump juicy momos! Not sure what the sauce was, but it was okay. Coconut Chicken Curry - My guest ordered and liked this. I felt the chicken was a little dry, nothing the generous sauce could not solve. Chicken Mushroom - I enjoyed this more than the coconut chicken curry. Also, the ginger in this dish was very pronounced, in a good way. Two Bowls of Rice - I should have reminded my guest that I am not much of a rice eater. She ended up taking the second bowl to go. BTW, there were four of us, so I guess none of us are rice eaters. Well with all that good bread, who needs rice. Actually the rice was pretty good, fluffy, etc. Atmosphere - Decent size location. Went the second day of opening but looks like I'm the first to review! Taj Indian Cuisine is a new Indian/Nepalese eatery on Geary at 21st replacing the Sushi Boat place that went out of business when COVID hit. Although it is in the hard to park restaurant corridor of Central Richmond district there is a parking lot across and if you don't insist on trying to find a spot right on Geary, it's not that bad. First, the menu looks very good and spans traditional Indian fare along with Nepalese dishes like Sekuwa (roasted / skewered meat), momos as well as Indo-Chinese dishes like Chow mein, Gobi Manchurian and Chilli Chicken. 5/5 for bringing this menu to the Richmond district. But my litmus test is generally the bone-in goat curry for any Indian/Nepalese place. In fact I prefer the Nepalese version which uses less spices and is lighter than Indian/Pakistani preparations. Also ordered a Tandoori naan with it and they threw in some complimentary Papad. The chutneys accompanying the Papad were a disappointment to be honest. But the staff did say they are working on tuning the flavor. The goat curry was a solid 4/5 for me. The goat itself was cooked very well but the gravy lacked the amount of flavor I was expecting as well as the heat I had requested. I was the only patron even though it was rush hour for dinner. They're still not on Google (should be there soon according to the owner) and it was just Day 2 for the restaurant so I'm sure things will pick up soon enough. We finally had time to try a newish restaurant in our neighborhood: Taj Indian Cuisine. As soon as we entered the establishment, we were cordially greeted and seated. The restaurant is has nice colors, fresh paint, nice decor, is very clean and pleasant. We ordered the Saag Paneer, Aloo Gobi, Naan Bread, and Lamb Biryani. We received complimentary Papadum with mint and tamarind sauces to dip it in. Let me tell you about the food!!! I was so delightfully surprised at how tasty the food was. The Aloo Gobi was perfect with the cauliflower and potato just right and not mushy!! The Saag Paneer was splendidly prepared and not overspiced nor salty. But the star of this meal was the Lamb Biryani!! This dish was excellently prepared with the lamb being extremely tender, the flavor enticing and the rice aromatic!! It paired delectably with the yogurt raita that came with it. The lamb and raita gloriously matched with the super soft and puffy Naan bread. I was in heaven!! I wished I had more room in my tummy for my fave mango Lassi or some dessert but I was going into a slow food coma. We brought the remaining food home. The service was superb, the servers were very welcoming, warm and friendly. I will definitely return to this restaurant. I'm so happy to have found this in our neighborhood. read more

We purchased the chicken 65 and except for the fact it was a bit more spicy than I could enjoy it was a wonderful dish. This my third time visiting and everything was very flavorful especially the Chai Tea so comforting!

Honestly this was some of the best Indian food I've had since the old Taj Campton or Amber. I've been driving past this place for a while now and suddenly decided to drop in and give it a try - and I'm sure glad I did. The sizzling Tandoori chicken is absolutely ****ing delicious, even if the portion is a little on the small side (think appetizer for two). I'd be happy to pay $5 more for a bigger portion. Service was prompt and attentive and the place was sparkling clean. The best thing about this place though is the owner's attention to detail - there's a hand wash station outside the bathroom if all you want to do is wash your hands, they give you a free chutney appetizer, and the tabletop flowers are REAL. You can tell ownership cares, and it's a positive indicator that your meal will be good. Also: they DON'T automatically include the SF surcharge - the first sit down restaurant I've been to that doesn't. PLUs, tip brackets are reasonable and don't start at 20% like many other restaurants. This place should be packed every night.
