I have been coming to Asbury for years but spent most of my time near Ocean Avenue. On my latest trip, I ventured deeper onto Cookman Avenue to explore some of the local dining spots. After reading several good reviews, I decided to check this spot out. The sushi is absolutely delicious. We order the spicy tuna, rainbow, firecracker, and eel dragon rolls. All were super fresh and among some of the best sushi that I have consumed. In addition to sushi, they have an extensive menu. Additionally, the atmosphere is lively with nice decor. Love the atmosphere here! It's very inviting with a lot of great energy. We were seated around 5:30pm on Sunday so we didn't have to wait at all. The food: best seaweed salad I've ever had. It had the perfect amount of sesame oil to give it an amazing umami feel. Fried calamari: crispy, fresh and delicious. The spicy mayo was definitely house made an added a pop of flavor. Spicy salmon: I have been on a hunt for the best spicy salmon recently. While Taka charges a lot they give two extra pieces. Definitely the best I've had. Really enjoyed the food here, although I wish they would somehow keep the kitchen open until 10:30 or 11pm on the weekends! I had an amazing time here. I came with my friends to celebrate our college graduation and they made it so special for us! We shared many apps, including the crispy rice tuna, tempura vegetables, and gyoza. They were all so delicious. For my meal i got the aburi salmon roll- highly recommend! Anytime I want to have sushi and some Sapporo I know I need to head to taka. Taka has such a fun ambiance and a wonderful bar, it is so well done on the inside. The service is delightful the food is off the charts and the Jan-san roll and the meatloaf are to dieeee for!!! Sounds silly meatloaf at a sushi place but ITS OFF THE CHARTS!! Came as a party of 4 and enjoyed our experience! The seating was spaced and comfortable, and the atmosphere was intimate with lounge-vibes. My siblings got the Sakè flight and really liked it-- I had never seen that before so I thought it was a super cool offering. The appetizers were really good. The house salad was a bit pricey but the serving is large so it's surely worth it. The crispy tuna bites were a bit on the small side but super tasty. Our favorite was the shishito peppers and the seared scallops, which were both fresh & so delicious. For dinner we got a mix of rolls, which were really good (jun-san, red dragon, yuzu lobster) and some mixed pieces of sashimi. For dessert, we got the black sesame mochi & the green tea mochi- which were soo good, and the pretzel tart, which was literally amazing. I look forward to going again. read more

So... I eat a lot of sushi, in a lot of different east-coat cities (NYC, Phila, don't judge!). TAKA was AWESOME and right up there with the best of them. On a Saturday night, definitely make a reservation, or head in early (~6p) to grab a bar seat. Non-reservation and heading in late? Be prepared to wait or sit in lounge seating; definitely comfy but tables there are a bit low to thoroughly enjoy and immerse in a sushi experience. In any case, I went on a recommendation and was totally impressed, as my first sentence alludes to! We got the TAKA poke for an app to split, which was great, super fresh, and an above average quantity for the price. For another app, we got the crispy spicy tuna- also amazing, fresh, and nothing less than what you'd expect! For the meal, we shared two large rolls, the Ju-San and Firecracker. As you can likely gather from the above, both were fresh, enjoyable, and primed us for a return! [One note: the sangria is a bit overpriced.] Spoiler alert: we went back a few weeks later and had another 5 star experience. read more

Whenever I come to the Jersey shore to visit family they ask where do I want to go while one home? Take is always top of my list. Such a fun cool vibe inside and at the bar. The food is good but forcing someone to drive to the restaurant to hear the wait time is a horrible business practice. Y'all, Taka is the real deal. My husband and I come here as often as we can and always struggle to decide what to get because the menu is so deep. We've never been disappointed in anything we've ordered. Our favorite appetizers are the scallops, shishito pepers, and karage. The jun-san, aburi salmon, and ebi salmon rolls are all really good but our favorite roll is the yuzu lobster. The curry and chicken katsu are winners too and the NY strip is an absolute showstopper. The drinks are delicious and the service is great. They're also very accommodating of dietary restrictions. Reservations are highly recommended. read more

From the modern exterior to the wall of giant sake containers and the bar area, the ambiance is really nice. The impression from the design is that Taka aims to bridge traditional Japanese culture with modern, minimalist design principles. The service is great too, everything you'd expect for a restaurant on the upper edge of casual-fine dining. My party of five only ordered sushi so I can't speak to other items on the menu. All the fish was really fresh but overall it wasn't anything extraordinary or memorable. It was definitely on the pricer side too. I would recommend Taka if you're looking to impress the person you're dining with in terms of ambiance and maybe looking to try something new. If you value quality and affordability, it wouldn't be my top choice. Overall, an average experience! read more

This attractive, with-it, upscale Japanese restaurant personifies the comeback of Asbury Park, which was just about a ghost town not so many years ago. We ordered appetizers: My wife's beef nagimaki was a generous portion of thinly sliced beef rolls with excellent spicing and sauce. My calamari was a generous portion of tender squid with two tasty dipping sauces. Service was excellent, even though the place was full-up. But it loses a big star for the unbearable noise level--rock concerts are tranquil compared with the din we suffered, and that detracted from our overall experience. read more

Have been to Taka numerous times, but this is my first review for dinner at the new location. First of all, I want to give them kudos for doing an incredible job on the bar and dining room. The decor is over the top beautiful - it is fun to just sit there and look around to remind yourself you are in Asbury Park, not New York City. We shared a number of appetizers - Spicy Salmon Roll, Pear Salad, Matsuri, Tsukune and much more. Entrees consisted of the Red Dragon Roll, Ju-San roll and their signature Short Ribs. The ribs are fantastic! Beer selection is limited but I cannot fault them for that and it won't effect my overall rating. We definitely will return. Reservations are highly recommended for weekend nights and they have a full bar. read more

The crispy tuna squares and shisitto peppers were very good. The soba noodle main was pretty good. The tofu main was pretty bad. The tofu was soggy and tasteless, it was kind of a disappointment. Im sure next meal there will be better. I'll just order sushi and I'll update. read more

Valentines Day, my husband recommended a few restaurants for takeout. But I told him I prefer Taka. My husband ordered a TunaTataki appetizer for me and Ceasar salad, sushi for him. But noticed I could get the tuna on the salad, so we went with that. Unfortunately, it turned out the tuna was atop a house salad, with mixed greens, that I can't eat. So we called and arranged an exchange. My husband picked it up and we went on to the beach to watch the waves and eat. Have to say my salad was a HUGE disappointment. Half the ingredients listed on the menu for a Ceasar salad were missing. Mostly just Romaine lettuce and 4 small pieces of tuna. But the MOST disappointing part was the dressing. Yuzu? No. It tasted like mayonnaise with a little garlic. Awful. Not at all up to the standards I expect from this otherwise and previously wonderful restaurant. read more

WOW! I am giving TAKA five stars as it is one of the best- if not THE BEST sushi house in all of New Jersey. They really nailed the perfect combination of atmosphere, service, high quality fish and presentation to earn these 5 stars whole heartedly. Lets start off with - you 100% need a reservation at least a day in advance. We actually made our reservation for 4 people the morning of and were only able to lock down a 9pm reservation so there you go. DECOR: Upon arrival you will see floor to ceiling glass windows, large scale, modern Japanese wall murals, statement light fixtures and an overall trendy vibe. This is an impressive, well thought out space. SEATING: There is outdoor seating, bar top seating, seating around/ near the bar, and a more secluded space in the back of the restaurant. We were a party of 4 seated at a square table towards the back. THE EXPERIENCE: Once we were seated at our table, our glasses were filled with water immediately, followed by being presented with a wasabi/rice asian inspired trail mix (see next to my drink photo) which was such a unique touch that i've never experience before. DRINKS: Blackberry Margarita. TO DIE FOR! loved it and its a very large amount for the $10 with a great alcohol ratio. More bang for your buck APPS: 1)Calamari - simple excellence with a side of spicy mayo. 2) Vegetable tempura - again, cooked to perfection ROLLS: I tried a piece of everyone's roll, so here is my take! 1)Shrimp Dragon Roll- best shrimp tempura roll ever. Avocado sliced to perfection 2) Firecracker Roll- Tuna w/ 3 dots of spicy sauce. and i mean SPICY 3)Aburi Salmon Roll - Smokey flavor, great portion of actual salmon 4)Ju-San Roll - MY FAVORITE! Tuna inside topped with Salmon & yellowfish some scallions on top. just the combo of flavors was flawless. Overall i would 10/10 recommend you try this spot.
