I had the omasake experience here and it was amazing. If you're a sushi lover, I highly recommend you to do the omasake. We were seated at the bar right in front of chef Taka himself. It came with an appetizer, 10 plus pieces of sushi, miso soup, and dessert. I was so full. This personalized experience was one of a kind. I will definitely be back. Everything was fresh and unique. People did tend to rush and sit at the bar when the restaurant had opened. But it's big enough for large groups as well.

Really fresh delicious high quality sushi at a reasonable price. It's pretty small inside so not great for large groups of more than 6 I would say. Our server was friendly and attentive. My husband and I came for dinner on a Friday night and were seated immediately. Very fast service. We were in and out in an hour.

Omakase sushi was delicious and filling. I was seated at the bar with Chef Taka himself! My favorite was the SD uni, so plump and juicy. I could barely make it to the end, I was stuffed! Everyone was extremely attentive. I LOVE that there were hangers for your bag under the bar. There is outdoor seating, but keep in mind street smells (exhaust, sewage, smokers) that might ruin the taste.

Always the best!!! We Always come back here for their oysters shots, it's the best! Thanks TAka especially to Mario, he's great!

I've been coming to Taka for years with friends, and it's consistently one of my favorite spots in the Gaslamp. The sashimi is always fresh, the rolls have great flavor, and you can tell they take real pride in what they serve. If you go, definitely try the house special sushi roll. It's honestly amazing and one of those things we end up ordering every time. The sake and soju are always a hit too, especially if you're there with a group. What really makes the place stand out is the staff. They're beyond friendly, super helpful, and they make the whole experience fun and relaxed. Sitting at the sushi bar is a great move because the chefs are fun to talk with and it adds a lot to the night. If you're looking for a reliable sushi spot downtown with great energy, this is it.

Visiting from out of town for work, and this place was easily the highlight of my trip to San Diego. The nigiri was exceptional, so fresh and beautifully prepared. You can truly taste the quality. Highly recommend if you're looking for outstanding sushi. Toro, golden eye snapper, cod, yellowtail belly, must try. Thank you!

This is a nice place to get some delicious and fresh sushi. They offer different options to cater to many tastes. We were here for a company convention and a group of us decided to check this place out. Service was friendly and the environment was good!

What a great restaurant. I came here on a Friday night with my parents and was pleasantly surprised by the interior. They do leave the door open, so bring a jacket. There is a sushi bar and tables, as well as an outdoor patio where you can sit. Now let's talk about the food, especially the fish. They brought out mini soft shell crabs as a starter, which were like little crunchy snacks. It was something new for me, and I really enjoyed trying them. We ordered salmon nigiri and golden eye snapper nigiri with yuzu sauce, and both were melt in your mouth delicious and full of flavor. For rolls, we had the negi toro roll with fatty tuna and green onion, which was amazing. The fish was buttery and the green onion added the perfect balance. We also ordered the salmon skin roll and the spicy scallop roll, and both were delicious as well. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. I would definitely come back.

So I was back for the second time in a week. I can't praise this spot more. I love the service, the vibe, and the food. I get treated like family every time I go no matter how long it's been since my last visit. I missed it up this go round and tried some new nigiri, which were amazing, but my got to(salmon) will remain my favorite. The best sushi restaurant I've tried in SD hands down.

Great and friendly service at this gaslamp gem! Outdoor seating, makes it pup friendly if you have your furry in tow. Tasty Sushi and the chicken fried rice was REALLY good!

Chef Taka

Wow. I can not even put into words how incredible this food experience was. We sat at the counter and had chef Taka serve us. Individually ordering nigiri one type at a time. I am in another world with how flavorful this sushi is. Even simple fish and rice nigiri is blowing my mind. You have to come here if you are a sushi fan or a foodie. You have to try the Golden Eye Snapper. It's on a whole other level.

The Creamy Mentai Udon is a must-try: rich creamy flavor, savory pollock roe with no fishy taste, and perfectly chewy noodles that are absolutely addictive. Their grilled beef tongue is cooked to perfection--tender, juicy, and well-balanced in salt and sweetness. The teppanyaki is also very flavorful. Price range is mid to high, around $40+ per person. Located in a small shopping center with a few parking spaces, Tanuki is a great tapas and standard sushi spot. It leans more toward Asian‑fusion tapas with some sushi rolls and a limited selection of nigiri and sashimi. If you're looking for specialty fish, a huge roll list, or omakase, this isn't that kind of sushi place. But if you want a wide selection of sake, fun fusion tapas, and some classic sushi options, this is your spot. I love that they have a small bar and that cozy, true hole‑in‑the‑wall feel. On top of an amazing experience, this was by far the best yakitori restaurants I've been to. The yakitori omakase was such a unique concept and I'm so glad my husband picked this place for my birthday. I don't want to give away too much, I think going in with just the expectation of chicken focused yakitori and being surprised and awed by everything else is part of the experience. Hope to come back here again if we can snag a reservation.

We had an 8:15 PM reservation and went with the $120 omakase. The Highlights: The Food: Started with a cool sesame pudding (with soy sauce and wasabi) and some fruit. I really liked the duck and the chawanmushi was super tasty. The Skewers: You get 8 total. 7 chef's choice and 1 of your own (I picked cartilage). The chicken wing was easily my favorite - oily, crispy, and great flavor. The thigh, neck, and meatball were also solid. The Ramen: Love that they give you a choice between a "small" (quarter) or "regular" (half) size so you don't waste food. I was still hungry so I got the regular. The broth was delicious and felt extra rewarding since we watched the chef making it all night. Dessert: Panna cotta and a yuzu/apple sorbet. Really light and a great way to end the meal. The Vibe & Pace: The chef is pretty shy and quiet - he basically only talks to explain the dish or if you ask him something directly. It was honestly fascinating to watch him work; he's so precise with his flipping and even used skewer wood to create smoke for the quail eggs. The only heads-up is the pacing. Because he's so meticulous and doesn't cook a ton of different courses at once, there's a bit of a wait between skewers. The couple next to us did a la carte, which I think might have slowed things down for everyone else, too. Overall, a very unique, "slow-food" kind of experience. If you're not in a rush and want to see some serious craft, it's worth a visit!
