Service: My friends and I (group of 6) went in to eat at around 6:30pm on a Saturday night and got seated right away. I ordered the Bibim Bop (marinated beef with vegetables and rice) and Dduk Bok Kee (spicy stir-fried rice cake), while everyone else got all-you-can-eat sushi in addition to appetizers. The food took around 15-20 minutes to come out, but that makes sense seeing as how we were a group of 6. Interestingly enough, some appetizers didn't come out until we were more than halfway done with our entrees. The waitress/waiter had to be reminded several times of our order before it came out. It seemed as though there was miscommunication or lack of organization between the two servers we had. My dduk bok kee did not arrive, but I was too full to bother asking about it. However, we were a group of 6 ordering many rounds of food, so I can understand if things got chaotic for them. Otherwise, the service was great. Our waitress was friendly and made sure to check up on us frequently. The Food: First things first, I really recommend the Korokke (an appetizer), which my friends and I described to be fried mashed potatoes. I just loved the crunchy outer texture and warm, soft potato filling. In regards to the Bibim Bop, I thought it was okay. The attached picture might give some perspective, but I wish there was a bigger portion of bulgogi (beef) included. It wasn't as moist/juicy as I would've expected it from the word "marinated", but it wasn't bad. Unfortunately, I was only able to eat half of the dish, leaving most of the veggies behind. I like eating vegetables, don't get me wrong, but there was something off about them that I didn't like. The side dishes were good though. Those are always my favorite part of getting Korean food. The total of my bill (tip included, dduk bok kee not included) came out to be $17.76, which in my opinion was pretty pricey considering the quality of the meal. All in all, not a bad dining experience, but not one that I would strongly consider trying again. read more

I have been a fan of Takamatsu since 1998. This restaurant was one of my first reviews when I started Yelp but guess it disappeared since it was so long ago. It's been a couple years since our last visit, and went for dinner on a Saturday night, in early February. Thankfully, there were some open tables, despite the large party in the back room and busy dining room. We took a grill table booth. Be careful of the gas lines and metal under the table. It reduces leg room, but the four of us managed to fit. We intended to order two grill items to grill at our table but decided to amend our order once we got an eye-full of the menu. To use the grill, you must order two items. Since we only ordered one, they cooked it in back, which I was fine with too. We started with the Hamul pajun (seafood pancake), no jalapenos, unless you can handle that level of spicy. It's huge and very intense if you get it with jalapenos. We also had an order of Jap chae. For the main course I had the amazing Galbi (or Kalbi) with lettuce, garlic and fermented bean paste. My hubs had teriyaki sirloin. With the delicious banchan and hot sake, it was a decadent meal. Service was fast and super efficient. The ladies are the same ones from 20 years ago. I am sure they don't remember me but they always recognize me 7'1" stepfather when we walk in. I introduced my mom to Takamastu and she loves it just as much as we do. My stepdad used to travel to Korea, Singapore, and the islands, for work and is happy to help me demolish a seafood pancake anytime I want to go, when we visit the Valley. Found memories built around great food and great dining experience. They also have a great sushi menu but we opt to save our stomach capacity for the other great menu items. So.Much.Food! This place is one of my favorite restaurants in Arizona. The staff are friendly and professional. The restaurant interior is simple and clean. As for the food, I have tried sashimi and veggie rice bowl, ox bone beef soup, and hot and spicy beef soup. All of them are so good, especially the sashimi and veggie rice bowl. I have eaten that particular entree four times!! I would like to try other items on the menu next time. The only thing I don't like is the location. It's too far from house. I only go there to eat, if I have to drop off my husband at work. Other than that, I love this place!! read more

Very authentic and delicious Korean and Japanese food. Service was really good and prompt. Everyone was so welcoming and kind. We ordered soup- soon du bu; mushroom and beef. It was the perfect flavor , savory and earthy. Beef was tender and the mushrooms were delicious. If you like tofu, definitely try it. We ordered chadol baeki and bulgogi for the grill options. The banchan/sides were fresh and tasty. My favorite sides were the kimchi, fish cake, and bean sprouts. But trust me, they were all good. The kids had miso soup and rice. I'll have to post another review with pictures next time. I was with family so I didn't have my phone nearby. If you want a family oriented and authentic experience, dine at Takamatsu. read more

This place hasn't been disappointed; the cool part is that you can choose the dine in regular food option or the Korean BBQ option. Also, in the evenings, they open up their sushi bar! They serve authentic Korean dishes such as bibimbap and Korean dumpling soup, kimchi stew, black bean noodles, etc. They are really friendly and their dishes are a good size. This is an excellent place to experience and get to learn about different Korean or Japanese entrees. I had a wonderful experience and was so taken back by how delicious their food was! Not sure how I've missed this place, but sure glad I found it! The reviews don't lie, the nicest Staff around. We decided to cook our own meat, because why not? It was so fun and I might say, the meat came out perfectly. But the chicken fried rice, wow. You can just tell they use fresh vegetables for it and it was probably one of the best I've tried. Came here looking for the experience of KBBQ, and my brother and I got it! Lots of food, my brother and I definitely enjoyed it so much! They had many side dishes: kimchi of course, fish cakes DELICIOUS, potatoes, rice, and soo much more. We had the Steak bulgogi, which was more sweet than savory, we did not expect that. It was different but good. The price was expensive $20 dollars per person but I think for experience it is pretty good. Stumbled on them almost by accident. We only tried Japanese fare because we're not quite adventurous enough for Korean food yet, but it looked and smelled great. Food was great! Sushi was fresh and delicious. Gyozas were fabulous! Teriyaki chicken was tender, delicious, and not chewy at all. We ordered about three times the amount of food we could eat. The tempura was the only area that may have been a half step below the rest but I'd probably still order the shrimp again. Great food and super friendly staff! read more

I have a lot of affection for Takamatsu. Korean food is experiencing a surge of interest, and is likely to explode in the coming years with bulgogi being a popular introduction. But before Phoenix had a popular introduction to Korean food: there was Takamatsu. It's branded as a Japanese restaurant, because sushi was (and still is) a more popular cuisine in the valley. But the moment you open the menu, the real focus of the restaurant becomes clear, and the Korean conventions are confirmed after the banchan dishes are brought out. Bits of pickled garlic potato, kimchi, bean curd that had been made into a kind of pancake and then served in small slices -- they're all a little different in terms of texture, but all savory and interesting. Sushi bar is decent, with quality nigiri. Their lunch combos are a good deal. I'm used to bibimbap served in a hot stone bowl, such that it continues to cook the dish after serving and the edge of the rice gets crispy. The bibimbap here is instead served in a regular bowl that is not heated, so if you were counting on the rice having a crust: sorry. However, the ingredients are still quality and it remains an amazing deal. Interior is usually quiet, except whatever lunchtime banter is happening at the sushi counter. For dessert, I'm a fan of the green tea mochi. read more

I asked the waitress politely to change our grill or add oil to it because our meat was starting to stick & burn and she replied, "No I think your grill is fine to me". Even my husband is upset they didn't change our grill for us but we are not the type of people to talk back. The other time we ate here, we asked nicely for more fishcake banchan and the super short waitress said no. Don't bother coming here for Korean Bbq. Go to Manna BBQ instead. It's looks small and not so attractive on the outside but, there's plenty of space, seating and clean. It's a mixture of Japanese and Korean BBQ style grill. Very delicious. I've been to an extremely nicer BBQ places but I give them a double thumbs up for wonderful tasty authentic Korean dishes. I haven't tried their sushi but the menu looks great too. In one week I've been there 4 times and each time bringing a different friend. My favorite is Kalbi Dolsot Bibim Bap. This restaurant is around the corner to nothing. A little while in the wall family mom and pop shop, that even had the logo and name worn off of the building. All the windows were so tinted that you would think they were hiding something. We came here for my sons birthday party, being our very first time, but wanting to experience the tradition of cooking our own food on our table. We have seen this in many anime's like Naruto, and after research online, this is the only place who does something like it. You must order two meals to use the grill, but the portion of food provided was well worth it. It was fun, fast, and very tasty. The restaurant isn't huge, maybe 20-40 tables but serve a combination of Korean and Japanese dishes. A little expensive but not too bad if you share some plates in a big party. We have been here many times. I've honestly never had the sushi but the Korean bbq is so good. I also love their bibimbop and kimchi jigae. My boyfriend goes there to get me kimchi jigae when I'm sick. The owner and the wait staff are so friendly and nice. I forgot how much I love this place and how good the food is!! Some of the best Korean food in Phoenix and the lunch specials are awesome! Food is definitely authentic and has the "homemade" taste. All the servers are all warm, loving Korean moms and and will always bring you more cold dishes. Everything is delicious and never an issue with food or the sushi. Yes, they do sushi too! My favorites are the bim bim bap, kalbi short ribs, and the spicy tofu soup. All of their cold dishes are really good too, best one are the spicy cucumbers. More underwhelming sushi from the west valley. I have friends that swear this place has some of the best, and I'm just not seeing it. Nothing on the specialty roll menu was special. Unagi nigiri-surprisingly scorching when it arrived. It also tasted off, like it was old and reheated. The '21 roll'-Standard tempura with eel sauce and spicy mayo that you can find anywhere. It has four or five different fish in it, but it's not like they really shine. Admittedly tasty. 007 roll-Avocado and shrimp on top, spicy krab filler. Nothing mind blowing. Very watery for a roll of its kind. Questionable. Takamatsu charges decent sushi prices while delivering sushi that just ain't up to snuff. I promised myself not to review this place until I tried the Korean BBQ side that most people come for, but I can't wait that long. Friends don't let friends eat bad sushi. read more
