Tall Grass Bakery is a wonderful little neighborhood bakery in Ballard. We've been a few times and are consistently impressed by the wide selection of artisan bread, including special loaves with ingredients like cherries and olives. I also love the flexibility of being able to buy just half a loaf. While the bread is a highlight, I find their pastries to be just okay. The store is set up for a quick "grab-and-go" experience, so the service is very fast.

Just a short walk from my almost weekly Ballard Farmers Market visit, I went to Tall Grass Bakery for the first time over the weekend. This is a small bakery with only space for maybe 2 or 3 patrons at time, but with shelves filled with plenty of golden brown loaves. During my short time there, people kept coming in to buy bread. I wonder how fast they usually sell out? I decided to go with two loaves this visit: Pullman Loaf ($10) - I've never purchased a plain pullman loaf from a bakery before but since I had just returned from Singapore with some kaya in tow, I wanted to make some kaya toast and was looking for a fluffy loaf to make toast from. I figured this would be close to grocery store sandwich bread, soft and fluffy. This bread is about standard pullman size, measuring somewhere around 13"x4"x4". The crust and crumb are substantially robust, diametrically opposite from that ethereal softness in Wonderbread. Unfortunately not useful for kaya toast, but the bread ended up being so delicious I essentially ate the entire loaf over a couple of days with only butter, no other adornments needed. (5/5) Seed Baguette ($5) - This baguette has an extremely moist crumb and is very chewy, almost to the point of gumminess. There's a nice crust embedded with poppy, sunflower seeds, and sesame that creates a wonderful nutty aroma that filled my entire car while driving home, even overpowering the fragrant flat of fresh strawberries I had bought from the farmers market. Due to the moisture in the interior, the loaf actually compresses quite a bit even using a sharp bread knife to cut through. It bounces back but it's a property that I haven't found in many other baguettes. The taste is sublime; very well developed with the nutty notes from all the seeds that create an exceptionally tasty bite. I usually love regular baguettes, but this one is certainly one I'll be purchasing again. (5/5) I was very impressed with the bread at Tall Grass Bakery. I will be back in the near future for more!

The scone was tasty though a bit of a crumblier(?) consistency than I'm used to. It wasn't bad but just unexpected. They don't have a seating area (yet? They bought the space next door and have a coming soon sign up) so it's just walk up and take it to go right now. The server was helpful and polite. I was a bit underwhelmed by the selection with the size of the bakery (and by no cookies that day either sadly) but would want to come back after they expand and see if maybe it's more my vibe.

Yo, your sourdough starter is straight-up Riz! It's the ultimate Omega of the kitchen, bringing all the vibes with that perfect rise and tang. Major respect for keeping it alive and thriving!

I stopped by during a walk in the area. I was drawn in by the delicious-looking items inside. And they lived up to their looks! I got a walnut pecan sticky bun, cinnamon roll, and the oat and honey loaf. Everything was extremely tasty. It's a small shop but there are tons of options. I was there late in the afternoon and there were still a lot of items on the shelves (see photo). I'll be back to try some other items soon!

So, what went well, and what has plenty of room for improvement? SERVICE - 5/5 The staff was super friendly and just really cool! I especially appreciated that he grabbed the pain au chocolat from the back at my request. I did not want mine touching the almond croissants displayed so closely together. I wanted a pain au chocolat, not an almond pain au chocolat. Sorry! AMBIANCE - 4/5 A very busy bakery/café located at Pike Place Market, near Starbucks. I liked the wall décor and the overall cozy vibe. Finding an empty seat may be a challenge? KOUIGN-AMANN/PAIN AU CHOCOLAT/MERINGUE - 2/5 Kouign-amann - 0/5 It pained me to give a kouign-amann such a low score, especially because it is my all-time favorite pastry. But this one was so subpar that I could not even finish it. It was, frankly, a complete waste of butter, flour, sugar and labor. I once lodged a complaint with a GM and Director of F&B at a certain Ritz-Carlton because their kouign-amanns were so bad that I asked them to stop whoever was making them. Since then, there has been a huge improvement, and that is what genuine feedback should accomplish. Pastry integrity is of utmost importance, and pastry crime is hardly forgivable. Pain au Chocolat - 2/5 Doughy and deeply disappointing. I simply cannot reconcile this with the fact that Le Panier has supposedly been a beloved fixture of Seattle's food scene since 1983. MERINGUE -- 5/5 Can anyone possibly mess up a meringue?? It is extremely disappointing to visit what is supposed to be a legendary, quintessential French bakery in Seattle, only to find that the two pastries I was most looking forward to, the kouign-amann and pain au chocolat, were both such letdowns. A café/bakery cannot survive on service and ambiance alone. The pastries have to deliver too. Time to rehone the baking skills, Le Panier.

The croissant was on the crispier side, especially with the almond crumble on top it was a bit too cripsy for me, but I tend to like soft and flakey pastries so it's probably a matter of taste. I think the hojicha syrup is my favorite out of all the ones I've tried so far. It has a really nice roasty flavor and not something you can find at most other places. The matcha I would say is my second favorite. The flavor of the matcha syrup is definitely lighter compared to the hojicha but still is a nice compliment to the soft serve. Their patisserie is stronger than the pastries IMO and while I wouldn't wait in a crazy line, it's still lovely neighborhood spot and perhaps the pastries are a better texture earlier in the day. Highlights: - Miso Roasted White Chocolate Cronut: My favorite item in their current rotation. The cronut was a tad soggy, but the buttery texture inside is still satisfying and the miso white chocolate filling is lusciously smooth and perfectly balanced between savory and sweet. - Blackberry Corn Mousse Cake: Blueberry mousse is the perfect fluffy texture and the corn is very subtle. The sponge cake is light and perfectly contrasts against the bottom layer of crunchies to add a bit of variety. - Blueberry Corn Croissant: Pastry also held up quite well on this one with the outside still being quite crisp. The inner cream unlike the mousse cake is very corn forward with a bit of blueberry jam to balance it out. Skip: - Black Forest Cake: Found the cake to be a bit too firm with the cream filling to be a little bland and too firm as well. Just wanted this to be better than it was. Also, it looks totally different from the photo on their website heads up. - Tomato Basil Croissant: Just found this to be off ratio wise. The only tomato is the 3 small quarters of cherry tomato at the top and a light smear of basil cream. I can see this being very good, but current form factor isn't doing it any favors.
