First visit here and right after the front door, inside is really nice decorated with round fire pit that can sit about 5. There are outside sitting place with water fall pond and outside heater that can heat probably the whole restaurant so you don't even feel cold, very nice. Food wise, it's good but not where you can say WOW that's good. However the prawn friend rice is on the good side.. The eggroll is yummy but not crunchy enough, on the soggy side I think. Oh, this was really good! It was hipster-y but very reasonably priced. Really interesting fusion flavors. Also, super generous portions. (I might be biased, normally living in SF though.) It gets pretty packed here for dinner on the weekdays and basically the entire day on the weekends. Decent prices, lots of options, great portions! Pho, vermicelli, spring rolls, rice plates - everything I've tried here has been pretty delicious. I wouldn't say anything is the best I've ever had, but I've never had complaints either, which I consider a win! Complimentary hot tea for dinners are also a nice touch. There is a parking lot for the restaurant, but it can get pretty packed on the weekends and certain areas can seem a little sketchy at night. When I told the waiter that it had clearly been re-served (there were used lime rinds and basil that had been picked through) he asked, "what's wrong with that?" Tonight we went to The Tamarind Tree restaurant and the owner punched my husband in the face. I wish I could leave zero stars, because that's what this restaurant deserves. We've been coming here for years and have always loved it. We've been excited to turn friends on to this formerly lovely place and have made it a point to bring out-of-towners here to introduce them to delicious Vietnamese cuisine. Things were off from the moment we walked in. There was a strange ordor in the dining room, a melange of fish sauce gone bad and horse manure. We sat down and ordered anyway. Our appetizer was fine but both of our entrees were inedible. We know how good the food usually is here, and we were surprised by the over cooked noodles and duck, the carrots that tasted like cole slaw mix from a bag, and the overcooked, rubbery yet mushy fried egg roll. We had a few bites but were disgusted by our entrees. We informed the server we were happy to pay for our drinks and appetizer but were not paying for the entrees, which we did not eat. Iui The server returned and said she could not remove the uneaten duck salad from our bill. I pointed out I had not eaten my meal and respectfully, calmly insisted it be removed from our bill, and said again we were glad to pay for our beverages and our appetizer. We approached the front register where the owner proceeded to argue with us and refused to remove the duck salad, a $15 item, from our bill. After several minutes of arguing, I took the credit card and credit card drafts and left the restaurant. I am a service industry veteran, having worked as everything from host to manager, including as a line cook and dishwasher. I know that sometimes the house has to comp a meal; it's actually not a big deal...it happens often. I also know that the house does not need credit card drafts to close out a check and redeem the money. The owner should have comped both entrees and allowed us to leave, while not satisfied by our meal, at least content and willing to return to a former favorite restaurant to give it another chance. Instead he called the police. We waited in the parking lot for a while until we finally decided paying $50 for this reprehensible BS was better than waiting for the police to show up . I signed the charge draft, walked back in, and put it directly in the hand of the owner's wife. "There. We paid. Take our money." As I was bringing the car around to pick my husband up in front of the restaurant, the owner was aggressively trying to photograph our license plate. My husband attempted to block his camera with his body, never touching the owner. As they jockeyed for position in the parking lot, the owners phone fell to the ground, and then he punched my husband in the face. He later admitted to the police that it was his ring that tore my husband's cheek. So, to sum up, the food at The Tamarind Tree is slipping and the owner provides the worst customer experience imaginable all because he's too cheap to comp an inedible $15 item. Tamarind Tree is a little bit hard to find, since it's tucked in the corner of a strip mall in the Little Saigon area of the International District. It literally looks like a hut, from the outside, but inside is a classy and clean restaurant with lots of seating and lots of people. The menu is traditional Vietnamese with lots of non-pho options. I definitely suggest getting something other than pho here because even though I'm sure their pho is great, but you get to try new dishes here that are all equally good! I got the grilled pork chop rice, which comes with a small salad, two pork chops, an egg, and a pile of rice. The pork chop was a little oily, but it was really well seasoned, and the fish sauce added a really interesting flavor that doesn't really show up as prominently anywhere else as it does in Vietnamese cuisine. The place was packed the whole time we were there, but the service was still really quick and friendly. They also include tea in a pretty teapot, which is a nice touch. Prices are actually pretty reasonable too, around $10-12! There's so much good, authentic food in the International District, and Tamarind Tree is definitely one of those places! read more

Girlfriend and I decided to come here for dinner after watching the Mariners game. I love that it's not too far of a walk from the stadium (plus it was great weather). It's definitely a hidden place since we were a bit lost finding it. The interior is a much nicer ambiance than what the plaza may lead you to believe. Appeared to have been limited parking and had a dinner rush so definitely come early. We were seated right away and handed menus by one of the owners. Took one star away because it took a good fifteen minutes before anyone came to check in on us, let alone hand us water/tea. The waiter did apologize for the wait though which we don't often witness, especially with Asian restaurants. I ordered the chicken fried rice and my girlfriend had the bun bo hue. We asked about the beef stew because we were looking for something not spicy for our daughter. The waitress said it was thick and had no hot sauce. I am so impressed with this restaurant. The interior is well decorated and arguably the most upscale dingy-strip-mall-plaza gets. Plenty of seating although the place seems to fill up fast on a late Sunday afternoon. We ordered the quail, egg rolls, beef ribs and rice, banh cuon nhan thit, and bun rieu. The bun rieu was absolutely the stand out star of the show. The broth was perfectly seasoned, they gave a good portion of the crabcake, good ratio of what tasted like fresh noodles, and herbs. They did not skimp on the garnish, all of the herbs that traditionally go in this dish. My mouth is watering just thinking about it! Oh and for the one reviewer who thought it was "bland" must have forgotten to ask for the shrimp paste. You *must* add shrimp paste for the authentic experience of this soup. Banh cuon or they call it banh uot nhan thit was delicious as well. Again the herbs we're plentiful and aromatic and the fish sauce was perfectly sweet and not too fishy. I slurped up every last bit. Quail was ok, beef ribs were too fatty but overall quite tasty. I cannot wait until I can come back for another helping of the bun rieu! read more

Something between the foliage and the fake waterfall really did it for me; My dining experience was enhanced, like I was transported from a restaurant by some dumpsters behind a Vietnamese grocery store to somewhere exotic and laid-back. The food here is great, I've tried a few dishes over the years here with no complaints. This time I tried the broken rice which came with three different styles of pork: shredded pork, pork chop, and pork baked into an egg. The cup of vinegar/fish sauce gave the meat with some zing. The service was a touch slow, with one server and one busser hustling for about 15 tables outside. I remember eating there as a little kid and of course it changed names and owners and such but only for the better IMO. My family always comes here for lunch on the weekends - their lunch special is a great deal! We always order the green mango or papaya salad, and my favorite is the egg rolls. Our experience here is consistently pleasant, because the food is tasty and the service is phenomenal. I'm not sure how authentic the food is, but it always tastes great with very nice presentation. The restaurant itself is also very spacious with nice decor. Pretty high-end feel, yet the prices are more than reasonable. The parking lot can get a bit chaotic, but it's free. It came in really huge size to me, and the pork tasted so great with the smashed peanuts. The eggrolls were deep fried and cut into two pieces. The sauce was a little bit spicy, sour and sweet, which went well with the vermicelli. A plus was that they offered complementary hot tea, which was aromatic and nice for this chilly day. I almost always order Eggs rolls and then some kind of main dish. The Bun bo Hue is one of my normal go to dishes at any Vietnamese place. I like to order that or one of the items off the Specialty menu. The staff is welcoming to any kind of customization to your order if you need it.
