Went there for dinner last night and as it was about a year ago great food and superb service. Everything was excellent, we had the Crab Cake for the appetizer and it was fantastic. Wife once again had the Filet and loved that it was butterflied to make it easier to cut and eat. You could cut it with a fork. mashed potatoes were just right. I had the SHELLFISH LINGUINE CARLOS* waitress said it was a little spicy and I could taste it some but not over powering in this case. Everything was cooked to perfection our compliments to the Chef and the staff. Waitress was right on the mark always need by when needed and checked on us during the course of the meal as needed. She did a great job was just sorry I did not get her name. Done in aplenty of time to go right upstairs for the show. This is a must place to go, prices are reasonably and the food quality is outstanding. We will be back again and hopefully before a year comes around again. read more

Brittany and I went to Tam's Backstage restaurant in Cumming, Georgia last night. The restaurant is underneath a cute little theater. Inside, it has a small bar area with some high top tables off to the side of the dining room. The dining room itself is cozy, with exposed brick walls and theatrically inspired decorations and paintings artfully placed throughout. Our waiter, Trey, came over very promptly and was very informative about the menu. He kept our drinks full during the meal and was very pleasant. To start, we shared a bowl of the three sausage gumbo. It was rich, hearty, perfectly spiced, and delicious. As its name implies, it had a plentiful assortment of meats and it turned out to be the perfect appetizer. Along with our soup, homemade bread came out rather promptly. It was a nice, crusty whole wheat loaf, served with a homemade (I assume) honey butter that was, really, spectacular. I ate a lot of it. It was at the just the right level of sweetness. Next, we shared a house salad with homemade ranch dressing, which was tangy - but not too much so - refreshing, and delicious. The homemade croutons were a nice addition to the salad and the portion size was good. For my entree, I had "Brian's Chicken," which was a marinated, butterflied chicken breast grilled and served covered in sun-dried tomatoes, a lemon butter sauce, and Caprino cheese, which tasted to me like goat cheese. The portion was large and they did not skimp on the sauce or the cheese. A basil chiffonade added a depth of flavor to the dish and rounded out the meal. As a side, I had homemade garlic mashed potatoes which were, like all of the other food at Tam's Backstage, very good. But Brittany's entree, the Shellfish Linguine Carlos, stole the show. The linguine was properly cooked so it was tender but not mushy, and the homemade spicy fresh tomato sauce was as good as any I've had at a fine Italian restaurant. What made this dish so special was the seafood. There were plentiful amounts of scallops, mussels, and shrimp. The scallops were very tender and sweet without being cloying, the mussels were plump and buttery, and the shrimp were large and succulent. All of the food at Tam's Backstage was delicious, and the experience was a very pleasant one over all, from being seated by the friendly host to receiving the check from Trey. This place is absolutely delicious. The service, food, and atmosphere mix together in just the right way to make me want to go back as soon as possible. We went for lunch on a Monday. We were seated right away and were plowed with piping hot fresh bread and olive oil. YUM. We shared a cup of gumbo that was out of this world. If I'd known how good it was going to be, I never would've agreed to share. It was that good. I had a tilapia sandwich that was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The french fries that came with it were freshly cut and so, so good. My husband had a grilled trout and fresh vegetables. He had to literally tell me to stop eating his lunch. It was perfect. Service was quick and attentive. The murals on the walls are gorgeous and obviously hand painted. We had fun walking around the school building after we ate to take in some of the history. We love this place! It's a must on our list of places to go next time we're in town. read more

I really want to like this place more, but there are a few things that prevent a 4-star rating. We've been twice so far, once for lunch on a Friday and once for dinner on a Monday. The place is interesting and theatre-themed; the ambiance is nice, although they need more light in certain areas -- definitely in the evening when the sun has set. It was hard to see my food in the evening, which really made for a sub-par experience. (You'll notice how dark it is in some areas if you peruse the Yelp food photos.) The food is good. You have to ask for complementary bread and honey butter, and it's worthwhile to do so because it's great! (Although I wish it was on the menu or just came standard.) I had the backstage pasta my first time, which was inventive and tasty; the second time, I had the Chicken Parmesan (which my boyfriend had during our first visit), and he had Brian's Chicken. The chicken parm was solid, and huge; Brian's chicken was tasty but had WAY too much cheese -- more chunky cheese than chicken! If I would give some constructive criticism, it'd be to re-evaluate the size of the dishes and the cost. The chicken parm was the same serving size (monstrous!) at lunch or dinner, and yet it's $5 more at dinner. Brian's chicken, on the other hand, was a small chicken breast that came with a cup of soup for $1 more than the chicken parm. Thankfully I had a lot of chicken parm to share! There's also nothing on the dinner menu less than $12.99. We were the only group in the restaurant during the evening, so I suspect everyone else has figured out that lunch is a more reasonable deal. The staff was nice and polite both times. I found the waitstaff at lunch particularly helpful and friendly. read more

Ahhhh so torn. This spot is where we ended up when my request for a dinner spot was "somewhere sit down that's not a chain." I would classify it as "Cumming nice." And, if you're in Cumming and looking for someplace nice, then it will probably fit the bill. But to me, it was just nothing that special or out of the ordinary, and merits the three star, A-OK rating. Our food? A-OK. Some simple pastas, a salad topped with some grilled seafood, and a bread basket they brought us to nosh on while we waited were all A-OK. Our textbook ice cream pie dessert was also A-OK. Our service? A-OK. Despite being pretty full, they were able to seat us immediately upon arrival. Our server disappeared for periods of time, but overall was A-OK. The ambiance? Surprisingly classy for a spot that literally is backstage, with exposed brick, white cloth napkins, and a fairly hopping martini bar. But everyone was wearing jeans, we were a good 40 years younger than the average patron, and there was a disproportionate number of same-side-of-the-booth-sitting-couples. This averages out to A-OK. Overall, I'd eat at this spot again when visiting my Forsyth County friends, but I would go with more realistic expectations than the five star average here on yelp had initially led me to believe. read more

Tam's was recommended to my wife and I earlier today. We ate a late lunch. What a treat!! Highly recommend Tam's for its unique setting in the historic school house of Forsyth County - a national historic building. My wife's pasta dish was delicious and my butterfly shrimp was the best. Great service and we were treated to the upstairs with it's gorgeously refinished stage and school memorabilia lining the original pine floors. Large portions, very tasty entrees at a very reasonable price. Don't pass up this dining opportunity in Cumming, GA. read more

Been here twice, staff is friendly knowledgeable and accommodating. Food is VERY good. I'm not usually one to order pasta when I go out, but I did and... HOLY Italian Grandma! It had me kissing my fingers. Atmosphere is classy, but not the kind where everyone's nose is in the air, the kind I wasn't expecting, but brought my date the second time around. Ahhhhh!!!! Best kept secret restaurant in North Atlanta! The calamari appetizer is enough for 6 people, fresh, not overcooked and the marinara sauce is house made, hot and tasty. The crab bisque was also great! My wife had the broadway pasta and she loved it, i had the fried shrimp dinner and it filled my craving for fried shrimp perfectly. I can't wait to go back. read more

Love this place. I could eat Brian's Chicken every day. And the tilapia picatta is wonderful. Their pastas are to die for. The Tams themselves are incredible people. Incredible. So this review isn't easy for me to write . For one - would have been my second dining experience at Tam's. The first was great , my family went for lunch and it was great so I wanted to treat my daughter, son - in- law and my grand daughter . It is Friday and we didn't make reservations so we went knowing there was a chance we won't not be seated. My grand daughter is young- almost 2 , but she is not a stranger to dining out and normally can entertain herself . We were happy when the hostess said they could seat us - great news ! So we thought ..... 25 minutes later ... not acknowledged by anyone ... not a glass of water ... nothing - we left . I'm no stranger to the restaurant world - I have worked in several restaurants and was a GM of a restaurant . I can't even imagine with staffing issues treating guests like this . And when we left I don't even think anyone noticed . I am fairly new to Cumming - but Love the Atlanta restaurant scene . I promise to tell everyone I know about this experience . I have dined all over the metro Atlanta area - I have never experienced this before . I won't be back ....after leaving we went to another local restaurant, were seated quickly ( and they were very busy) , received very good service , great food , and plenty of water so there is hope lol !!!! read more

My husband and I just celebrated our anniversary at Tam's tonight and it was perfect! The service was courteous and fast. Our server said she was new, but you would have never known because she was very good. The food was so so good, probably the best we've had since moving to Georgia 3 years ago. We loved the stuffed mushroom appetizer, and my husband loved his stuffed flounder. Also, the seafood bisque was very good. And to top it all off, the prices were reasonable, especially for the quality! We'll definitely be back! read more

We recently stayed nearby and decided to try this place out. Delicious! We had to do curbside due to the current situation but they were very proactive with their infection control. They were very prompt in taking our order and when we received it the order was correct! (Doing the drive thru's and curbside I have been getting what I ordered wrong almost 95% of the time but not this time!) portions were large and very tasty! I've checked into Tam's much less often than I actually eat here, which is about once a month. To say the least, I am a Tam's fan and often rave to others about this restaurant. However tonight, I feel so thoroughly disappointed I may not go back again. We didn't want a heavy meal tonight, just house salads and their wonderful calamari to split for takeout. Unfortunately, when we got home with our meals, the salads seemed like they were mostly croutons and the lettuce was stale. The calamari was a disaster: half the size of a normal order, what calamari we could find was as hard as tire rubber and stale tasting, and the bulk of it was just the fried crumbs. A thirty minute round trip for $25 has resulted in us throwing out our order half eaten and still hungry. I don't know what happened tonight relative to my many other experiences there, but if I were the owner or chef, I'd be embarrassed at what was sold to a loyal customer. read more

Meh...Typical "trendy" restaurant in the Atlanta Suburbs. I had Brian's Chicken with the Rigatoni Side for lunch. The chicken was way over-powered by the Caprino Cheese, which kept the Sun-dried Tomatoes from adding anything to the profile. The Rigatoni was Non-Dente - undercooked to the point of being inedible without a steak knife. The sauce had little flavor to it. I normally would ask for alternatives upon receiving a meal of this caliber but the place was over-crowded to the point that I only saw our waitress twice: ordering and the check (another waitress delivered our food). The seating and number was such that we couldn't carry on a normal conversation without raising our voices to the point of being uncomfortable. Having to decide between Roasted Duck Ravioli or Backstage Pasta is miserable. I love both and what's worse is I love trying different items at my favorite restaurants. Great place in downtown Cumming. We decided to give it a try on a Saturday night, and it was packed. We got lucky and got a table by the bar, but I highly recommend making a reservation. I had the Broadway pasta, and it was great - amazing flavor and fresh ingredients. But I'd have to say my favorite thing about this place is the heath bar ice cream pie! Well I used to love it but after tonight, I'm not sure I'll be back. It was only me, my husband and our toddler and we sat for 10 minutes trying to get a server's attention but it's like we were invisible. Not one server even looked at us after we were seated. The 6 person party which was seated after us got a chance to order their nice bar drinks and got them at their table... and still we couldn't even make eye contact with anyone while trying to stare them down. So after 10-15 minutes of this we left because why give our money to a restaurant that pretends you're invisible. I guess our party was not large enough to warrant their attention. read more

Tams backstage is certainly one of the most high end, low-lit, upscale, fine-dining restaurants that Cumming has to offer. (Not assuming there are many, because there are NOT). The location is unique, the food is exquisite, and the cost is still surprisingly fair, despite the consistently delicious cuisine and phenomenal staff. I hope that Cumming can incorporate more higher quality restaurants just like as Tam's, because the menu and atmosphere are paramount. read more
