I have been going to tanbella for a couple years now. I am going through my second package. last week I slipped and fell hard on the floor getting out of the spray tan booth. when I realized I was falling I tried to grab onto something to stop but there was only a weak ladder decoration which also landed on me. I hurt myself pretty bad. went to front desk after peeling myself off floor and told them. I suggested hey install a safety grip but the girl said they were thinking of putting towels out. there were three employees behind the desk and no one asked if I was ok. a week later I am REALLY hurting and struggling to get on and off my bed. I'm going to ask for the remainder of my package be compensated at least since I am afraid to put myself in that position again! read more

I got my first spray tan here before going on a vacation a few months ago. It was a bit overwhelming to remember all the different positions/poses at first, but the manager, Claudia, explained everything very thoroughly and answered any questions I had with a smile and great attitude. Of course, the person who responded was not present ever when I was in the salon. She phoned me up and informed me that Tan Bella was keeping a file on "difficult customers." When I realized what they were doing--basically threatening me for a polite complaint, I did have some choice words for the owner in a private phone conversation. However, I never raised my voice or swore at the staff or treated them badly in any way. It's classic how the owner is trying to make it look like I swore at and abused the workers when in fact that never happened. It's disingenuous at best. What they are really concerned about is customers complaining while they're trying to sell the services to a new customer right next to the person complaining. I was literally blackballed for complaining nicely. You'll notice that everyone who calls this business owner on their terrible attitude will be called abusive. Living in SF, I can't get a natural tan since I have to keep myself covered in layers most of the time. Except for those two weeks of Indian summer when we're blessed with shorts and t-shirt weather, I have to resort to fake tanning it once in awhile. If you're a newbie to the whole tanning biz, Anthony is the person to talk to. He will guide you step by step and show you the proper poses to do inside the spray tanning booth. No worries, if you can pose like a ballerina and do quarter turns, you're set. He didn't look at me weird when I asked him stupid questions (i.e. can you show me how to blot? where do I put the barrier lotion?) If you don't want to get too dark, you can start with the light tan, but I went for the medium with bronzer so I can see instant results. Buy the amplifier gel, it helps your tan absorb better for only $5. Tan Bella has tanning beds as well although I personally would not recommend it. UV rays from tanning beds are as harmful as the sun's rays so keep that in mind when making your choice. Buying a package is the cheapest way to go, but if you're the non-committal type, take advantage of the Buy 1 get 1 free offer for new clients. $40 is a good price to start. The salon is kept very clean and the staff is nice. The monthly unlimited prices are great but the beds that come on the level two ($29/month) can burn more than brown and I wouldn't call them a far cry from the booths you'd get rolled in with a Planet Fitness membership. Good for maintaining color but if you're fair or burn easily I'd suggest springing for higher than the level 2. On a separate note: A personal pet pet peeve is when it comes off like business owners do not empower their employees to give great service to customers. I was compelled to write this now that I've had 2 such experiences at the Castro location. The most recent, I went in for my usual tan in a level two bed. The desk told me someone was in there now but they could "squeeze me in." I waited about 15+ minutes and then was told there was "a delay" with the person who was in there and that the appointment after had arrived so I wouldn't be able to tan. They offered me an upgrade which sounded great, but then said "Great! - you'd just have to pay the difference." That isn't how that should work. When someone has waited and is now being told they can't be serviced by no fault of their own, you don't offer a PAID alternative. The only other option was to make an appointment for another time. These are stand-up tanning beds, not spray tans or spray machines where one might expect having to have an appointment. I'm sure there is some back-end software that prevents indiscriminate comping but situations like this should have workarounds. I could tell the employee was even a little embarrassed by the limitation and I place no blame on them. Someone was taking too long and the next person was there - totally understandable - but the person who has been waiting shouldn't be given the shaft when there's only one bed available at their subscription level. read more

OH YES! I love this place! I got my membership for unlimited tanning and I've been going regularly. I was super white and now I look as if I had just come from a 2-week vacation on the beach. The place is super clean and nicely decorated. There are different levels for the tanning beds and they offer various products to improve the tanning results. I LOVE the candy that's in the room, especially the grape flavored ones. They also have stickers so you can see your results if you use them, in case you're not using any bikini or whatsoever (at least that's what I used them for). I'm attaching a picture of my tanning results. EVERYONE has noticed and I've gotten many compliments about my skin. I don't even use any makeup anymore and even my legs, that usually take forever to get color, are super tanned and beautiful. You can make an appointment or just walk in, which is what I usually do. It can get crowded though, so be prepared for some waiting time, which is usually not long anyway. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a beautiful tanned skin. ****BEST SPRAY TAN IN SF*** I've been coming to this tanning salon on and off since I moved to San Francisco 5 years ago (they have another location by ATT Park). It can be a little slow sometimes, but that's also when I come in after work... when EVERYONE else is doing the same thing, but that staff are cool and fun and it's not a big deal (you can make an appointment but I never make it on time so I gave up on that). They have the best selections of beds I've seen in the city (the level 5 high pressure is my favorite, the lv. 4 is great if you need some color, STAT, though I crisp a little). Spray tans: I've been doing that the longest, and as I'm sure you know, it's easy to end up looking orange or super fake, like Big Ang from Mob Wives. BUT NOT HERE, the Versa Spa booths they have are great (recently go newer ones that have a leg boost yaaas, and more options for how dark or light). You can get the clear spray that develops over time and doesn't stain all your clothes, and you end up with the best tan that looks great and doesn't come off patchy making you look sickly. If you're nervous, don't be, the staff is really good about teaching you spray tan do's and don't's. Overall, a great place. If you're on the other side of town, I check out the store on King St, they seem less busy so easy for a quick lunchtime tan! read more

I've been tanning for a long time now and hold a current membership elsewhere. Yet when I come to the city I was looking for a place that I can come to while I'm in town. When you enter the lobby is simple,clean, and great music to set the mood. I was greeted quickly by Andrew and it was refreshing to have a guy with a friend and upbeat attitude because sometimes girls can be snobby. He took the time to overview benefits of each tanning beds and showed how to use the two machines I used. The highest level lay down bed is amazing and I finished with the stand up red light therapy which has a body massager that you stand on during the session.(its amazing!!!) I should start by saying I do really like this place, and let's face it, it is one of the more expensive salons in SF but I've stayed this far because I'm loyal to a fault and the inconvenience was acceptable up until now. Come on, having any customer wait 20+ min for a 12 min tan when there are 2 beds open because someone called ahead of them, who is not even there yet is completely asinine. There are better ways to improve the logistics of moving customers though a salon. Places like hair salons where they lose money for having an open chairs have long since balanced their walk-in customers with those who've made appointments. While I can see where you already have received my monthly payment, filling the bed isn't a priority for you, this however makes me feel under valued as a customer and why the two stars (for now). Like I said, I'm nothing if not loyal - this is an easy fix so I am sticking with them for the time being. I agree with other comments, the employees have been super nice, the beds are great and clean, it has a fun vibe to the place. If wasn't for the issue above, I would give it more stars. read more

Absolutely the best place to tan in San Francisco! All of the locations are pristine and heighten the entire tanning experience with wonderful staff, top of the line tanning equipment, and reasonable prices. I especially love the new versa spa spray tan booths at this location with all the add ons such as primer & after mist. The unique spray tan solution used here is THE best! Never streaks, & looks & feels amazing and natural. Comparable to a custom airbrush if you want the convenience of a booth. My spray tans and UV tans are always on point! Yes, they can get busy during "rush hour" when everyone gets off work. Simply book an appointment for your services and you should be good to go. I have to be honest and say I wrote a not so positive review for this location a few months ago due to previous incompetent staff ( who are btw no longer working here). Peter, the owner, went above and beyond to listen to myself and other clients in improving upon any and all customer service-related issues, and the shop having even undergone a new an improved makeover. I am happy to say that as long as I'm living in SF I will forever be a Tan Bella customer. I'm scared. Seriously, I think I am changing and I don't know what's happening to me. I say this because I, stephy s, the whitest, pastiest, palest, glow in the darkiest girl I know, just went to.... A tanning salon. Good Christ and Sweet Jesus on a bike, who am I?! I guess it all started after my horrendously awful vacation in Belize last week. I hadn't planned on tanning at all. In fact, I hate tanning, being out in the sun and the way skin looks with a tan. I'm no goth chick, but there is something I have always adored about being a pale girl, but after stupidly laying out (out of sheer boredom) in Belize, I came back with something I hate even more than a tan...tan lines. Ugh. And so I decided to do something about them or at least try as I seriously consider white boobs the enemy. Maybe it was seeing all of my Dad's Playboys growing up with the dark tanned girls and glowing white boobs, but it just freaks me out and looks awful. And so I went on Yelp and found Tan Bella and called to see what the dealio was. The girl on the phone was really friendly and very informative and put me and my scared white boobs at ease and after thinking it through, I decided to say, eff it, I'm going in. Once I got there, I was greeted by said sweet girl and she took me on the little tour and explained the beds and the stand up machine and told me these are the only beds in the city like this and that you won't get burned....or more importantly, in my fear base, orange. She also told me that it would take a few sessions to get some color and we agreed that 2 fake bakes and a spray tan should fix me right up and I gave her my credit card. Since the lay down bed apparently gives you white spots on your back on certain areas, I opted to go with the stand up thingy as the idea of white dots on my back in addition to the big white dots on my front didn't sound like a win win. From there it was time to strip down, put on a sample packet of lotion and stand in this crazy Terminator/Beam me up Scotty sort of contraption and hope to God I wasn't on America's Funniest Home Videos. After taking a deep breath and gathering my nerve, I pushed the button and on came the purple lights and I was suddenly transported to what I could only imagine the Tron Tan Disco would be like. I was wearing stickers over my eyes and couldn't really see much, but I did hear loud windy noises, the faint sound of house music from the little Walkman thing and felt warmth on my calves and tried not to have a panic attack and die with tan lines. Hey, priorities man, priorities. Thankfully, I made it through the 8 minutes (phew) and was sent on my merry way after I made an appointment to return for Round 2 of Operation: I Want My 5 Star Boobs back! Thursday came and I went back in and actually noticed some color on this round and a co-worker even remarked on how "colorful" I looked on Friday. I wasn't sure if this was good or bad since he was smirking. (Thanks Mike Stoppelman!) Today, I went in for my final session of the spray tan and my oh my, is that an experience. I didn't know whether to hold my breath or what, but the only comparison I can make to describe what that's like is being in an Aquanet chamber and leanin like a chola. Damn Chewy. As I walked back to my apartment trying not to sweat or shower, I kept looking at myself in the reflection of store windows and couldn't stop laughing. The pale pasty girl with a spray tan. Just hysterical. I guess I have to wait 6 hours now to shower and hopefully what will be unveiled will look normal or at least somewhat natural ;) All I know is, I'm glad I did this. It was fun, funny and the people working here are aces and super fun and friendly and if they could get me into not one, not two, but three weird chambers and get almost $100 out of me, clearly they are doing something right, hehe. read more

After receiving a letter from Greg, the owner of Tan Bella, I am forced to give pause and reevaluate the nature of all of my reviews and the way in which I deliver them. I am not some gutless keyboard jockey that spouts self serving drivel in passive aggressive fashion. I like to be out face to face doing business and interacting verses telecommuting. I didn't join yelp to hurl insults from the peanut gallery, I joined to meet with like minded consumers..and to a lesser extent other freaky drunks. Soo when contacted by the owner I realized that my words had 1) meant something to him and 2) set up an employee for potential scrutiny. Although I was not happy with the attention I received on my initial visit I feel that if I had really wanted to rectify the situation I could have done so at that point rather than be coy and beating around the bush as to my dissatisfaction. While the employee may have been having a lapse in service standards I hardly feel that he was guilty of being anything but momentarily dense, something that I know I do on a regular basis. The prices are still high but when an owner goes out of his way to rectify and address an issue like this I tend to ignore the price tag in lieu of exceptional customer relations. Simply put, everyone spaces it once in a while but that is hardly a mistake that cannot be made up for. read more
