This place is delicious. I had katsu sandwiches a lot in Japan, and instantly recognized the treat I was going to have when I stepped in. This was konbini meets Portland, and I loved it. I had the regular katsu, and boyfriend had the spicy one. We were both super happy. We don't have a lot of money and this was well spent. Next time I'm going to have to get some desserts, I can't not. I'm not an egg sandwich person, but they looked perfect. Just like I remember with the half egg in the middle. People are being ridiculous about the auto gratuity. When you eat at a restaurant, you are entering a contract where you agree to pay for part of the servers/kitchen staff's wages. You do this literally everywhere, at every business, you just don't see the overhead like you do with a tip. The servers were super nice, there is a literal sign at the counter, and pointed out the auto gratuity so you didn't accidentally leave more unless you wanted to. Really cool downtown location. It's a bit on the pricier side, and their menu option isn't that expansive but nonetheless a cool place to stop by after work or during your lunch break. The Katsu sandwiches aren't the best I've had (see Tokyo Sando) but still pretty good and tender. I loved my fish sandwich. Really big piece of fish, fresh tasting and crispy. The slaw was nice and the bread was toasty and perfect. The value was good and the atmosphere of the restaurant was lively but airy. I went on a Friday around noon and there was plenty of seating but it seemed busy. Visiting Portland and accidentally stumbled upon this place. And it did not disappoint! Tried the Haruto and Shizuku sandos, both are great. If I had to choose between the two, I'll have to pick Haruto. The meat patty in Shizuku was a bit thick and hard to bite into but it tasted good with the curry sauce it came with. Regardless of which sando you try, get a side of fries. The aioli it was served with was awesome. Service was also good and place was clean. Pro: The restaurant's aesthetics were beautifully laid out, and their food presentation also was good. Friendly staff. Con: 4 of us ordered a good amount to eat there including the chicken and eggplant sandos (eggplant one was way too saucy), 2 order of fries which could be fried longer, 2 broccolini and got a lot of pastry and goodies togo. It cost us over $180 and the auto gratuity was way more than what we would have tipped at a self service bus your own table kind of business. Then it asked for more gratuity after the service charges of almost $30. The pastries were good but not wowing enough for $8-9 prices and the size of some were small. Sandos were tiny. I don't think I would visit anytime again as the food was just mediocre, but would try it out a year later to see they improved. read more

The food was ok, and the service was less than average. If you don't mind a pricey sandwich with added auto gratuity, even if you don't have a party of six or more, then this is the place. Yes, they might forget some of your orders, and you'll end up waiting for a long time; but if you have time to kill, then it won't matter. The seating area doesn't get wiped down between customers which kind of sucks when you have to bus your table and still pay the auto gratuity. The pork sando is great and exactly what this Japanese gal misses from home. The potato salad needs work. None of us liked it. Super wet, watery, and runny and like no other Japanese style potato salad we've ever had. Also the malasadas are never in stock when we're here no matter how early we come. We ordered the Katsu sandwich, Egg Sando and the Strawberry Sando. Our favorite was the Strawberry Sando. The whipped cream was delicious and it was basically a strawberry shortcake but with bread instead of cake. When I have a Japanese egg Sando, I prefer it to be very simple. This one was flavored with yuzu, maybe, and it also had red onions... not simple enough for my liking. The katsu sandwich was just so so. The texture on the meat was too chewy. It was nice to have it with toasted bread but since there are other Katsu Sando choices in the city, this place wouldn't be my choice of place to go. read more

I've been twice now and am still rating these guys a little high in anticipation of trying the whole menu. Pork Katsu sando was ok (really too heavy on the cabbage for my liking...in need of extra sauce for dipping or something.) But the smoked salmon and avocado toast was very tasty, and they make a great matcha latte. Gotta try the dessert case next, as stuff there looks interesting, as well as savory croissants with interesting fillings. Worth stopping in, for sure. read more

I went to Tanaka towards the end of the day, so definitely, there was no big selection of pastries. This place reminds me of a quick grab and go sandwich when I was in Japan. I have the pork orKatsu Sando and the Sakura latte. The pork Katsu was juicy and chewy. Their sauce had a kick of wasabi, which was surprisingly welcome. The kick of the wasabi cut through the fattiness of the sandwich and pulls it together. The Sakura latte was surprisingly good. I was thinking it would have been a little bit salty, but it was a sweet Sakura latte. The latte in the sandwich was a good combination together. Definitely a come back location. read more

I also tried their ube almond milk latte which was equally as delicious. The sandos at Tanaka are tasty and a treat to try something different. Had the Menchi with curry gravy and it was delightful and unique. Love the build out of the space and inviting atmosphere. Had to rate them a 4 though for serving flat beer (end of keg) that didn't even fill the glass. When I inquired about a change to our $7 flat beers I got a shrug. A small sign next to the register informs you that 15% is added to your bill (because they love them). You can ask to have it removed I guess but then you look like a jerk IMO. But wait it gets better. Then when you check out the iPad asks if you want to add 5 or 7%. At checkout I didn't see the sign and thought wow 7% seemed like a reasonable ask for a place that you order at the counter and buss your own tables, not knowing that I paid 22%. Tanaka if you love your employees then pay them the wage you think they deserve. Don't Burden patrons with mandatory tip. Raise food prices or ?? But I for one am tired of being pressured into a tip when I am doing the work of the wait staff, especially when it is added in this manner. read more
