I enjoy going to this bakery, but I can't tell if it's genuine interest or loyalty so keep that in mind. This was my family's go-to bakery for as long as I can remember. Literally every cake for every occasion was from here, and since it's part of the supermarket building, I got to come in almost weekly for a treat. They have become my baseline for egg tarts, custard buns, green onion breads, and cake logs. They are what I compare other bakeries to even though I know they aren't the greatest or cheapest. We don't come as often since we moved away, and I have branched out into trying new places, but I still get excited for buns from here. P.S. parking is a huge lot but it's still a nightmare. This place is cash only. Chinese speakers will have a slightly easier time. Things run out early. Also, try the pebble bread and tell me if I'm alone. I've been eating their cakes since they opened. I love their coffee roll. I used to eat one roll a week for yrs. until 3 years ago I had 3-4 times of bad bitter coffee rolls. I stopped going. This year for my daughter bday we wanted a crispy sponge cake. Someone told me they have that cake. I decided to give them another try. I called in advance to ordered the cake. That's what I did at Tanbii Bakery. After making my purchases, I mustered only such discipline as was necessary to leave the store before devouring 2 little mung bean pies on the sidewalk in front of the store. This should be ZERO stars, but yelp does not allow that. Do NOT, I repeat do NOT ever buy a wedding cake from this place unless u want the Leaning Tower of Pisa style! They delivered a leaning cake to us on our wedding day and blamed it on us for this. The 3 tier cake is a standard size of 6", 8" and 12" and they used a Boba straw to use as foundation which resulted in it to lean. This, by the way is a normal tool they use to hold the tier cake. (OMG right?!) Then say all the wedding cakes in this size will lean and none of their other customers complain about it. WelI, I guess I am the first and I am sure I will NOT be the last, thanks to Yelp here! They called me to ask details on the problem and offered no compensation to us for their faulty cake setting! In fact they ask me what do we want as compensation. To be fair I asked what they can offer and they came back and said "sorry we can't offer you anything for ordering a standard size cake!" Keep in mind that they did not inform us when we ordered the cake that 1) it will lean because this is normal (really??!!), 2) they use a boba straw as foundation which required a $40 refundable deposit, 3) the wedding cake picture we ordered from their book was standing straight and tall and 4) their delivery personnel knew of this since we brought it up upon cake delivery and he just said ok and walked away! Horrible and very unprofessional service. Customer satisfaction is definitely not their priority! All they care about is getting their money. They wasted my time with a useless follow up phone call with no sincere apologies but putting blame on us (again!!) for ordering this standard cake size. I advise them to not sell wedding cakes to the customers in the future if they cannot do it properly and using a boba straw as foundation is a joke (but normal to them) and it is not the customers fault for wanting the cake to stand tall during the wedding night! They lost a customer permanently now and believe me this has and will continue to pass through word of mouth and online about their FAILURE in delivering a standard non leaning wedding cake and their joke of using a boba straw to hold it up. This is my usual go to asian bun place. I have been eating their buns for as long as I can remember. I love their coconut and raisin loaf, its amazing i can eat that in one sitting. If you like coconut, it is a must!!!!!! Additionally their sponge cake, wiener bun, pineapple bun and char siu bao (bbq pork) bun are really good. One thing I cant get anywhere else besides the delicious coconut loaf is their cold sandwich. It's simple, white bread with egg, pork sung, cucumber, mayo but there's something about it that makes it special! I would definitely recommend it, I hardly ever pass it up when Im in there. They also have loaves of breads with different fillings like mung bean or taro, all of which are soft, fluffy and perfect!!!! Their cakes along with their breads and everything else is affordable. The cakes are soft and always contain super fresh fruit. Overall a great place to go for a birthday cake, asian buns and even a special sandwich. It's in in the same plaza are the square market and because the plaza is so big, there is a lot of parking but beware it does get crowded. Every year since I was 3 or 4 years old, we would come in here a few times a year to get a birthday cake for me or one of my siblings. My personal favorite is the green coconut cake, but everyone else likes the pudding cake. They also offer a delicious chocolate cake and they've started offering taro cake ever since taro become popular. They make some of the best Chinese/Taiwanese-style cakes in just the right cake texture, frosting, design, and taste. They also offer cakes by the slice, breads, sandwiches (I like the fried bread sandwich with eggs and cucumber and the pork onion roll) and tarts. Overtime the prices have gone up with inflation but the bakery has definitely maintained their quality! So, I was leaving 99 Ranch Market here with a disappointed feeling of this supermarket. I was still hungry as I was searching for dinner. I figured, something to calm this beast of a hunger growling in my belly. I walked in here and saw all the moon cakes lined up. Many of the pastries and breads are gone or put away since it was near closing time. I saw desserts and stuff but I felt like getting one of these byte size moon cakes. I could not believe all the different fillings for these now. Mushroom in one of them, black bean, red bean, green tea, ok, now you're talking. I love green tea anything. So $2.15 for the byte size one or $4.29 or something for the full size one. Alright, I was tempted and got the big one. This is overall a small but good bakery throughout my last 20+ years. From birthday cakes to Asian sandwiches with pickled cucumbers to other bread. I went back here a few times after my move each time it got worse. The customer service was never good to begin with so I am not going to bother with that. The rudeness is normal at this place, so does the Asian style cutting in line before the pandemic. What I find sad is that I took my kids today for some custard bread. Most trays are empty but the the small custard bread are still there. I noticed the price jumped to nearly twice as much as before the pandemic. About their cakes, they're honestly really overpriced. $28 for an 8" round strawberry cake, with whipped topping? Or $17 for a cake that's literally 7" x 4" ? No thanks. Their cakes are mediocre at best. I went in today to purchase a cake, specifically an 8" round coffee cake. Total came out to $21, and it was the cheapest that they had. While I was waiting to make a decision on which cake I chose, the workers were literally standing around and gossiping. No greeting, no eye contact, nothing. I told them I wanted this cake, and a worker got it for me. Up until this point, I have been speaking English, as I found it not necessary to speak in Cantonese. Whilst writing the name and happy birthday and etc on my now purchased cake, the workers said to one another, "these two guys are so weird, they just came in and buy a cake and stood around", among other things, in Cantonese. i checked out this place after having lunch at the square supermarket since the colourful pastries and packaging caught my eye! they offer a nice assortment of breads, tarts, buns, cakes, and cookies. unfortunately, they had sold out of the egg tarts (dan tat) when we arrived. i had a hard time choosing, but i ended up picking a black bean cake and red bean cake, both of which were more like tarts since they consisted of black or red bean paste covered in multiple layers of thin, flaky, pastry dough. price was pretty standard at $1.50 a piece, but they tasted great, with tasty, but not overly sweetened black and red bean and flaky pastry dough. sometimes i enjoy peeling off each layer of pastry dough to see how many layers there are! after walking around a bit, we decided to come back and purchase some swirled sponge cakes and coconut tarts for a new year's eve party that we were attending. the pandan coconut sponge cake was really nice, as i love anything coconut, but it didn't have that much cream swirled inside the cake. the yellow honey cake tasted like yellow sponge cake, but had a rich whipped cream swirled inside which made it my favourite cake. i also shared a coconut tart with my husband which was really yummy, lots and lots of coconut inside a firm, pastry crust. my only regret was forgetting to take photos of these delicious treats! more reason to return on my next trip to the square shopping center. read more

Can't say the same for their traditional items as we didn't try them. Ordered slices of the mango, coffee, strawberry, and chocolate "mousse" cakes. Mango had a strange gelatin layer on top that fell off in a sheet, while the mousse cake had absolutely no mousse to speak of. I mean, the only thing chocolate about it was the chocolate candy shell which housed a dry, yellow sponge cake. The strawberry cake tasted soapy. Embarrassed. I took a bunch of these over to the in-laws, who were too polite to state the obvious. Well, I guess it's partly our fault in ordering Americanized desserts at an obviously Chinese bakery. This place has pretty much gone downhill. Price, taste, and customer service. I used to really like anything taro there. When friends and family ask where to order birthday cakes, I would refer them to Tanbii for their taro cake. But they've failed me. They quoted a price on one day for the cake that was very different from when it was picked up. They also price quoted a different price when I called another day. Their reasoning was that the price is different on different days? The cakes don't meet up to the quality of before - much more artificial now. Also, why do you have to be so stingy on getting an extra bag? If you want to buy a loaf of bread and ask for a small (very small) plastic bag to just split something up - I'll even pay a few extra cents for it - why do you have to be so stingy on this? Does it make sense to make such a big deal over letting me have/buy a small bag? Also, why do I feel like they follow me around when I'm there as if I'm going to try to shoplift and put pastries in my purse? This review is for their wedding cake only. If you are considering Tanbii to save some money, you're at the right place. Our wedding cake (10" 12" 14") fed over 300 people and was a little over $400. Our guests commented how good the cake tasted and were intruiged about the different flavors. This, however- does come with a few (minor) caveats. One - they are a traditional asian bakery which means asian style cakes. Light and fluffy cakes with fruit filling covered in whipped cream frosting. I believe fondant is avail. The lighter cake also means pillars are a must - the cake itself is not dense enough to support the cake without it. They were a bit late in the delivery and set up at the reception. Like everyone says, this is a local Chinese bakery that's been open for ages. Their toast (sliced bread) is the best. It is soft and tastes completely different from the regular bread you get for your sandwiches. I would say their bread is more like pastry, slightly sweet, soft, yet has substance and isn't just fluff. It's meant to be eaten by itself or something sweet, not sandwich bread. They have many flavors for their toast, from plain to raisin, taro, red bean, etc. I like their taro and my mom likes their raisin. The flavor indicates the filling in the lower third of the loaf. It used to be $2 something, but as with everything else, their prices did raise a dollar or so. Still, for a delicious, no frills loaf of bread, this price is affordable. Even though their reviews aren't 4 stars or above in yelp, this bakery has a loyal customer base because all their toast sells out everyday and so it's always fresh. I haven't found any other bakery that makes toast as good as them and it's been 20 years like everyone said, so I think they deserve some recognition. It's actually better if there's less new customers because like I said, they sell out regardless. Whenever I leave back to school away from the 626, my mom gets me a loaf of bread from here.
