Amazing authentic family owned and operated East Indian food. They do not hold back on the spice and ingredients here! Where other places are suffering from shrinkflation, Tandoori Kona does not! They did not disappoint in their boneless curry goat, and butter chicken. Their naan was also a great size and delicious! I grew up in this neighborhood and used to come here a lot with my friends. My favourite dish is their butter chicken and their garlic naan. We asked the server for recommendation and she suggested their appetizer combo plate with comes with a varieties of veggie and non veggie appetizers. Their fish pakora is so good! The food was amazing. We walked in and had any seat so we picked a booth. Menus were already on the table. After a few minutes our host came and took our order. Food was delivered and that was the end of the customer service. We were not checked on and we had to go to the cashier to pay. The music in the restaurant was at the right level. The lighting was spot on. It would have been nice if there was , at least, one check-in to see if we needed rice or "how is the food?" Went to Tandoori Kona for the first time! It is one of the better Indian restaurants in Richmond (according to a friend). A small but busy restaurant located in the same plaza at Shoppers Drug Mart -- while I was there, they had an abundant number of orders for take-out. I ordered butter chicken with no spice ($15.95) with Naan ($1.75). Each order of naan came with 3 large pieces and was not tough to chew at all. The butter chicken was actually quite delicious and flavourful (even without any hints of spice!). It erred on the liquid side, with about 5 pieces of chicken breast. Chicken breast did not taste dry at all. Pouring the butter chicken onto the naan made the whole meal quite tasty. I think this is a decent option for Indian food in Richmond, but I find that the portions were not as big compared to the prices we had paid. We were able to finish all of the naan and left with just a little bit of sauce left. I would say food-wise it would be 4 stars from me, but the portions and prices drops it down to a 3. Would definitely be okay giving this restaurant a try (especially for a lunch)! read more

We randomly spotted Tandoori Kona after we discovered that the place we wanted to eat at was only offering takeout. It's located next door to Typhoon Bubble Tea Taiwanese Cuisine. We dropped in on a Saturday afternoon (around 2:00pm) and it was busy inside. Mostly takeout orders but several groups/individuals were eating in. Service was fine and they dropped off a jug of water for our table. The menu consists of appetizers, meats (chicken, lamb, goat, seafood), chef's recommendations), tandoori, vegetable, biriyani, breads and desserts. Seems pricier than normal with most dishes in the $14.95 to $18.95 price range. The two lunch specials aren't on the menu but just ask. One of the cheapest deals we've seen in a long time! Make sure to ask for your spice level (mild, medium or hot) otherwise default is mild. - Chai ($1.75) - came halfway through our meal but it was a decent cup. Needed a sprinkling of sugar (which they provide separately to add yourself). - Naan - the basket of naan that they give you is huge. Standard but we had a few pieces leftover to bring home. - Butter chicken thali lunch special ($8.95) - I liked that the butter chicken sauce wasn't too rich, with some tomato notes coming through. Don't expect much meat. The eggplant was soft but a touch on the bland side. Daal was good. Raita was a bit different than the norm, but we enjoyed it. Rice and salad were normal fare. - Vegetable thali lunch special ($8.95) - the only thing different is that they replace the butter chicken with palak paneer. Since COVID-19 kicked in, a lot of restaurants have been shut down which inevitably allowed a lot of my cravings for a lot of kinds of foods to escalate. One of those cravings was for Indian food, and so, after a recommendation from a very reliable source, I decided to give Tandoori Kona a shot by ordering takeout via Skip the Dishes. I am happy to report that this place hits the spot! I've since ordered takeout from Tandoori Kona twice, and each time I did I was completely satisfied by the quality, presentation, and taste of their food. Also, it's all reasonably priced and portioned sizes are fantastic. This place will definitely satisfy any craving for Indian food that you may have. It's not the best Indian food you'll ever have, but it's good. Items I've ordered: Butter chicken - lots of chicken, sweet taste, thin, but rich Chili chicken - spicy and lots of chicken Palak paneer - exactly what you expect, but could use more cheese Aloo gobhi - good Bhurtha (roasted and mashed eggplant) - good Naan bread - great portion size, one per person is good enough, two if you don't have rice Rice Pillau - feeds three people One thing to note again is that the portion sizes here are really good, especially if you're looking to feed multiple people. One curry dish alone paired with one naan bread and/or a rice dish is plenty enough food for one person. Don't make the same mistake I did on my first order and underestimate the portion sizes! One curry will feed one person easily, so expect to have leftovers if you order more than one curry dish. It turns out that I've been going to the wrong place for samosas for an entire year now! My coworkers have been recommending this place for ages and I'm glad that I had a chance to stop by for dinner the other day. I took the opportunity to try the butter chicken, the naan, and the samosas and I was pleasantly surprised. The (veggie) samosas were delicious! They were stuffed full of herbs and spices that made it aromatic and flavourful. It also helped that they were deep fried to a perfect crisp and piping hot. BUT as yummy as they were the star of the show was the sauce. It was tangy and sweet and filled with just the right amount of spices. The butter chicken was fantastic as well and made just the way I like it: sweet and creamy! It was a generous portion and I had enough left over for another meal. The naan was chewy and warm and it complimented the curry perfectly. The only downside was that I was made to wait 20 minutes for my food. This is my new place to get a good, reasonable, Indian meal when I am in the mood! The lunch special (at 7.95) is the best deal in town! The butter chicken, chick peas, potato curry, small salad and naan bread were all delicious and worth every penny! The amount of meat is pretty small but the sauces are delicious and very appetizing! You may not have a choice, either. The few people that work here usually just push you into the lunch special (in the nicest way) and its usually a go to item for people in the area. I don't think you will find a better deal for above average Indian food anywhere! The staff are very friendly and the size of the place makes it nice and cozy. I ordered the lamb curry, which was their lunch special, while my friend ordered the butter chicken entree. The food lived up to the hype but I felt that the servings weren't as large as I expected. My all time favourite Indian food place! Ok FINE it may be due to my lack of exploration of Surrey-town. Anyways. I've gotten the butter chicken, lamb/goat roganjosh/vindaloo, tried a bit of fish curry (forgot which one), and the vegetable pakora. Obviously my favourite is the butter chicken (oh so cliche), but the roganjosh is a good spicier substitute if you want to venture out. Vindaloo is a little thin in texture for my taste, but it's a good choice if you don't like creamy curry. You can choose the curry in mild/medium/spicy, but beware the spicy is really rather spicy, and I like my spice. Feeling of spiciness also depends on the curry - for example, medium in roganjosh tastes spices than in butter chicken, might be due to the cream in butter chicken cutting down the spice. Each meal starts you off with papadum, and comes with rice and naan. When the curry comes in its little bowl you always growl at how it's not enough to fill you, but trust me, it's enough. Ohhhh the naan.... perfectly baked naan... it makes you not want to "waste" ur curry on the rice. Decor is alright. They tried. Obviously nothing compares to Maurya. There are table cloths and napkins. It's clean. Washroom is tres small (like most Asian places). Service is fair and sufficient, and food rolls out at a reasonable speed. I've noticed many people get take-outs here, too. But I prefer the meal choice because it is individual-sized with rice/naan factored into the price. This is arguably the best Indian restaurant in Richmond and potentially one of the best in the Lower Mainland (so say my Indian friends.) Ordered the lunch special which is basically a preset tray of a bunch of items. Everything was vegetarian except a small portion was a chicken curry (tasted like butter chicken). Was a bit disappointed because it only had a two small pieces of chicken. The tray comes with two big pieces of fresh naan and a small scoop of rice. Would have liked to have had more rice and less naan(perhaps a personal preference.) Nevertheless the place was packed at 12:30. Managed to get a table right away as someone was leaving. Lots of people also came in for take out. Food came out right away probably since everything is made in one large batch for the lunch special. Around 1:00 the place cleared out fast and we were one of two tables left. Overall a great place for good Indian food. I especially liked the papadum. Nice crispy snack. The medium lamb Curry was spicy on the first bite but it's actually quite tolerable. I did enjoy the chunks of lamb throughout the dish. The butter chicken was in my opinion a little off. The taste was actually ok, but it is a noticeably more watery dish than the curry. The sauce is just overall way more thin than the lamb curry. Their servers are always friendly and your cup of water is frequently topped off which is a bonus when eating spicy foods. They only have vegetarian samosas but they are the puffy flaky kind that are so good. Lots of potatoes and peas inside. Their lamb roganjosh also a must as the meat is tender and flavorful. Each curry comes with papadum, rice and naan which is a great deal for around $15. It's filling and we always have left overs for lunch tomorrow. Their curries are in the creamy side so if you like butter chicken you will like most of their curries. This place is a must if you just started getting into Indian food. The restaurant doesn't look very nice from the outside, but I was surprised that the interior is actually pretty nice and well decorated. It's fairly small inside and on a Saturday night, we were lucky to find seats without reservations. We started off with Vegetable Samosas (although we had wanted meat samosas, but they had sold out). It came with two sauces - one being slightly spicy. For $1.50, you get two samosas, which is a pretty good deal. The samosas were crispy on the outside and stuffed with peas, potatoes, and spices. MW suggested we try the Lamb Vindaloo. The boneless lamb is cooked in ginger, coconut, vinegar and cream mixed with potatoes. For all the curries, they will ask you how spicy and you can choose from mild, medium, or spicy. We went with medium, but I was surprised it wasn't too spicy. MH commented that this was surprisingly very good. The lamb was tender and the sauce was a nice change from your typical masala or butter chicken. Well we had to get the typical Butter Chicken as well. MH and MW had told me that this was very good at Tandoori Kona. The boneless chicken is marinated in their special buttery sauce, cooked in garlic ginger, and cream. Chicken was well tenderized and the sauce was creamy yet flavourful. All the dishes came with Naan as well, which is baked in a Tandoor oven. I really liked this leavened bread because it didn't feel oily at all! It was much different from the naan I've tried at other restaurants, which are usually drenched in oil. Very fluffy and perfect to pair with all that sauce! I think you get a bowl of rice for each dish you order, so we got 4 bowls of basmati rice. Rice was fluffy and seasoned with some vegetables. The curries may look small in the bowl, but along with the naan, rice and all the cream that's in it, you actually get really full! The Chicken Tikka featured boneless chicken marinated in yoghurt ginger, cooked in a Tandoor and served with butter sauce. This was slightly more spicy and the chicken was very tender. I thought the sauce was not really necessary since the chicken is already well flavoured. We also got the Mixed Grill (I think it was called a different name on the menu), but the platter featured BBQ chicken, chicken tikka, lamb tikka, fish tikka, and was served with butter sauce. This is great if you haven't tried a lot of their grilled dishes and want a bit of everything. I found that the fish wasn't that great since it didn't seem very fresh. Overall, Tandoori Kona is definitely a hidden gem in Richmond. Prices are reasonable since Indian food is very buttery and you will get very full with the rice and naan. Good idea to come here with a small group of friends so you can share a variety of dishes. However, the restaurant is fairly small, so larger groups may need reservations. I was told Tandoori Kona was one of the best Indian restaurants in Richmond. I finally got around to trying it and to be honest, I think it's a bit overhyped. We ordered the lamb korma and butter chicken but medium spice but I couldn't taste any spiciness at all. Overall both dishes were average and didn't make me want to keep on going for more. Their curries are pretty consistent - out favourites at the moment being the shahi paneer and the tandoori prawn dish. The palak paneer here is just okay, but most people that come here seem to go for the butter chicken which is definitely a tasty option! At lunch, they serve a lunch special which includes salad, rice, 2 side dishes, and your main (either a veggie or meat). The lunch special is typically butter chicken or a shahi paneer or a veggie curry of some sort. They also serve it with naan bread and the whole thing is served on a stainless steel/aluminum platter that is similar to the Japanese bento box. The best part is that it's only $10-$11 for the lunch special! Good value for the amount and quality of food you're getting. This Indian restaurant was a pleasant surprise. They had the daily lunch specials such as the butter chicken, but also a very extensive menu. I opted for something different by ordering the goat biryani. The waiter asked how spicy I wanted it and I said "mild", assuming this won't be that spicy. It turned out to be quite spicy. I'm used to spicy food but I didn't expect this dish to be spicy - the type that leaves a burn in your stomach. But overall it was good. The goat was quite tender and the rice was as good as it can be. I ordered a side dish of naan. It was so fresh and could tell it was cooked in the traditional clay oven. To wash it down I had the mango milkshake. This one I wasn't sure if the waiter got my order wrong because it wasn't a milkshake that I'm normally used to. It was likely a mango lasi.
