Tandoori Kona offers a flavorful and authentic Indian dining experience. the Tandoori Chicken, are perfectly charred and rich in flavor. The curries are creamy and packed with depth. The naan is soft and complements the dishes beautifully. With its inviting ambiance, attentive service, and vibrant dishes, Tandoori Kona is a must-try for anyone craving high-quality Indian food.

    Butter chicken and naan

Went to Tandoori Kona for the first time! It is one of the better Indian restaurants in Richmond (according to a friend). A small but busy restaurant located in the same plaza at Shoppers Drug Mart -- while I was there, they had an abundant number of orders for take-out. I ordered butter chicken with no spice ($15.95) with Naan ($1.75). Each order of naan came with 3 large pieces and was not tough to chew at all. The butter chicken was actually quite delicious and flavourful (even without any hints of spice!). It erred on the liquid side, with about 5 pieces of chicken breast. Chicken breast did not taste dry at all. Pouring the butter chicken onto the naan made the whole meal quite tasty. I think this is a decent option for Indian food in Richmond, but I find that the portions were not as big compared to the prices we had paid. We were able to finish all of the naan and left with just a little bit of sauce left. I would say food-wise it would be 4 stars from me, but the portions and prices drops it down to a 3. Would definitely be okay giving this restaurant a try (especially for a lunch)!

We randomly spotted Tandoori Kona after we discovered that the place we wanted to eat at was only offering takeout. It's located next door to Typhoon Bubble Tea Taiwanese Cuisine. We dropped in on a Saturday afternoon (around 2:00pm) and it was busy inside. Mostly takeout orders but several groups/individuals were eating in. Service was fine and they dropped off a jug of water for our table. The menu consists of appetizers, meats (chicken, lamb, goat, seafood), chef's recommendations), tandoori, vegetable, biriyani, breads and desserts. Seems pricier than normal with most dishes in the $14.95 to $18.95 price range. The two lunch specials aren't on the menu but just ask. One of the cheapest deals we've seen in a long time! Make sure to ask for your spice level (mild, medium or hot) otherwise default is mild. - Chai ($1.75) - came halfway through our meal but it was a decent cup. Needed a sprinkling of sugar (which they provide separately to add yourself). - Naan - the basket of naan that they give you is huge. Standard but we had a few pieces leftover to bring home. - Butter chicken thali lunch special ($8.95) - I liked that the butter chicken sauce wasn't too rich, with some tomato notes coming through. Don't expect much meat. The eggplant was soft but a touch on the bland side. Daal was good. Raita was a bit different than the norm, but we enjoyed it. Rice and salad were normal fare. - Vegetable thali lunch special ($8.95) - the only thing different is that they replace the butter chicken with palak paneer. The palak paneer also leaned towards the bland side. If you're looking for a cheap lunch deal, TK is the spot. 3.5 stars.

Lunch Special ($8.95): also comes with fresh, warm naan bread to enjoy all of that saucy goodness!

=== 1. VERDICT/VALUE 4.5 stars! I can only comment on about lunches, but if you're looking for good food, fast service, good prices, and a nice environment to chat/hang out, then Tandoori Kona is THE place to go when you're in Richmond! === 2. FOOD After years of lunches with co-workers, there's nothing that beats the Lunch Special ($8.95)! For this price, you're treated to a vegetable or meat-based main (usually butter chicken) along with rice, salad, and two vegetable mains, one of which is often bean-based and the other potato-based. Most importantly, it's served with warm naan bread for dipping :) It's always served on a metal tray, which may be reminiscent of prison food...but it also harks back to how food is served in some places in India, where one is presented a tray and you go down a buffet line of sorts where you are served a dollop of something from each server. Either way you look at it, the food is fantastic! I should note the amount of meat you get seems to be declining in recent times (see picture), but that could be a result of higher food prices while maintaining the same menu price. === 3. SERVICE & ENVIRONMENT The service is consistently good, if not quiet. Words are rarely exchanged, but always understood and the service is efficient. The environment is intentionally dimmer and contemporary. In order to squeeze in as many tables/booths as possible, wheelchairs and strollers are less able to fit in here. It may be busy, but parking is typically available in the shopping complex parking lot out front.

    Tandoori Dinner and Butter Chicken

Great little restaurant with pretty decent food. No frills decor with booths and tables for seating. It's clean which is great. We ordered butter chicken and the tandoori dinner. Wish we ordered more, but this was more than enough for two as it comes with really good naan and rice. Butter chicken is better than alot of places with good spice and not too overly rich. There was a good amount of chicken but the sauce is the star. Tandoori dinner: came with different types of meat chicken, lamb tikka, chicken tikka, rice, butter sauce. It was good, some of the meats were a bit tough, but flavour was good. I would try something different next time. The Naan is definitely worth getting extras..not too doughy, some crunch and just makes you want to eat more. I was stuffed by the end and wanted more but thought better of it.

Tandoori Kona is one of Richmond's most frequented and awarded Indian restaurants. It is a small space located in a strip mall that has adequate seating. The food is flavourful and the portions are filling even though they look deceivingly small. The medium spice level isn't that hot at all so this is a good starting place for the inexperienced. We also ordered the appy platter which had a variety of pakoras - delicious and not greasy at all. Overall I always enjoy Tandoori Kona but with other options closer to me I haven't been coming as often. Should you try it? Definitely!

I was ordering food with a group of friends on a food delivery app and found their options somewhat limited. I wanted to order samosas but the only option was an appetizer platter for $11. There was one samosa with fish and veggie pakoras included. Food was alright. Samosa had a good spicy kick. The fish and veggie pakoras were pretty good.

    Lunch special 8.95 !
    Eliza L.

Came here for lunch with two of my colleagues today. We were seated right away and the server was quick to get us water and asked if we were interested in the lunch special or the regular menu. The lunch special was HUGE and only costed us $8.95 each! We got a basket of naan to share, and each of us got a silver tray with butter chicken / daal / raita / rice / and salad! Such a good price for a very generous portion of food. I thought it would be busier but we were in and out in just over half n hour! It's only a short drive from where we work so I'm bound to be back again!

Butter chicken, an order of naan, and 2 orders of samosas to go!
    Monika C.

It turns out that I've been going to the wrong place for samosas for an entire year now! My coworkers have been recommending this place for ages and I'm glad that I had a chance to stop by for dinner the other day. I took the opportunity to try the butter chicken, the naan, and the samosas and I was pleasantly surprised. The (veggie) samosas were delicious! They were stuffed full of herbs and spices that made it aromatic and flavourful. It also helped that they were deep fried to a perfect crisp and piping hot. BUT as yummy as they were the star of the show was the sauce. It was tangy and sweet and filled with just the right amount of spices. The butter chicken was fantastic as well and made just the way I like it: sweet and creamy! It was a generous portion and I had enough left over for another meal. The naan was chewy and warm and it complimented the curry perfectly. The only downside was that I was made to wait 20 minutes for my food. Not the most ideal situation given that my break was only half an hour. Next time I'll be calling ahead of time. I can't wait to try the other things on the menu.

    Burned to a crisp naan
    Marc D.

    * Burned * Yelp burned me. The promise of 4 star Indian food in Richmond had me a little bit suspicious, but I gave it a shot. I got burned. We ordered one lunch combo and one lamb saag. Both came with naan. I should clarify. Both came with burned naan. I like naan that is charred with the best of them. But this was burned. Ironically the waitress noticed and suggested she bring another batch, and guess what? It was burned too. Go figure. Photo: http://www.yelp.ca/biz_photos/zux3l8BcJOdLcVlWg-1NGg?select=B6LpMnoS1Nv2tZG037j8IA#B6LpMnoS1Nv2tZG037j8IA The lunch combo was a straightforward affair featuring butter chicken (overly tomato paste flavoured without enough herbs and seasoning), channa masala (the best part of the combo), and a potato curry. Photo: http://www.yelp.ca/biz_photos/zux3l8BcJOdLcVlWg-1NGg?select=M5vanMm630JEtwsHSzzrkw#M5vanMm630JEtwsHSzzrkw The lamb saag was nicely seasoned, but the lamb was low quality, and I couldn't detect any spinach or any greens flavour at all. So good seasoning, meh lamb, meh greens. I felt burned. Photo: http://www.yelp.ca/biz_photos/zux3l8BcJOdLcVlWg-1NGg?select=dyLwsZDujHmIDjHmXjR08w#dyLwsZDujHmIDjHmXjR08w It came with rice which was not burned. Hooray. Photo: http://www.yelp.ca/biz_photos/zux3l8BcJOdLcVlWg-1NGg?select=p6f9QcS6DfkDyxgKV7sNYA#p6f9QcS6DfkDyxgKV7sNYA The menu had mentioned that the lamb saag was supposed to come with papadum - which were not served. Burned again. Yelp/Tandoori Kona you burned me. Burn me once shame on you, burn me twice......

    papadum
    Alice L.

My all time favourite Indian food place! Ok FINE it may be due to my lack of exploration of Surrey-town. Anyways. I've gotten the butter chicken, lamb/goat roganjosh/vindaloo, tried a bit of fish curry (forgot which one), and the vegetable pakora. Obviously my favourite is the butter chicken (oh so cliche), but the roganjosh is a good spicier substitute if you want to venture out. Vindaloo is a little thin in texture for my taste, but it's a good choice if you don't like creamy curry. You can choose the curry in mild/medium/spicy, but beware the spicy is really rather spicy, and I like my spice. Feeling of spiciness also depends on the curry - for example, medium in roganjosh tastes spices than in butter chicken, might be due to the cream in butter chicken cutting down the spice. Each meal starts you off with papadum, and comes with rice and naan. When the curry comes in its little bowl you always growl at how it's not enough to fill you, but trust me, it's enough. Ohhhh the naan.... perfectly baked naan... it makes you not want to "waste" ur curry on the rice. Decor is alright. They tried. Obviously nothing compares to Maurya. There are table cloths and napkins. It's clean. Washroom is tres small (like most Asian places). Service is fair and sufficient, and food rolls out at a reasonable speed. I've noticed many people get take-outs here, too. But I prefer the meal choice because it is individual-sized with rice/naan factored into the price. I guess if I make my own rice then I would get the take out curry plus a side of naan to feed more than 1 person. Beware they are NOT open for lunch on Sundays.

The location is central and it was easy to find street parking on Main Street. Even though it was a Saturday, we were the only table for most of the evening. We were a bit anxious because of the lack of customers; however, there were delivery drivers picking up orders regularly, so it looks like most people did not dine in. The place is clean and seating was comfortable. There is a bell on the table for us to call the server when we were ready to order. We ordered the Lamb Shan-e-Babur that serves 2, the Prawn Coconut, and the Chicken Karahi. The dishes do not come with any rice or naan, so we had 2 orders of rice and 2 orders of naan. Even though the rice portion was generous, we still found it quite pricy. Each of us was given a bottle of water (Pure Life), unnecessary use of plastic is not something that I like to see. And even worse was the surprise when we got the bill that there was a charge for it! The food was delivered by a robot. The portion was reasonable and the taste was good. The lamb was well cooked and tender, the prawns tasted very fresh, and the chicken had the perfect taste, the spice level was just right for all of us. The only thing that was a problem was there were some small sharp broken pieces of bone in the Chicken Karahi, my friend had a painful bite when she thought she was only having the sauce on rice. I would come back for the taste of the food, but I will definitely turn down the bottled water.

And just...wow, everything was SO SO good. The three appetizers were so flavorful and the desserts, unlike anything I've ever had before and simply delicious. We also had drinks (but, of course!). One friend had a mango lassi which she loved, one friend had a high ball which she loved, and I had a mango mojito which I loved. (See a pattern? lol). All was great. Our server, Leesa (not sure of spelling) was so incredibly personable and lovely, and a gentleman I gather is the owner came by twice to make sure everything was okay.
