Really solid malagang place. I got their chicken broth and it was light yet rich at the same time. All the ingredients I chose were cooked perfectly and they have a great sauce bar. I paid a little over $20 for 1.4lbs of food, which I think is a fairly average price for malatang these days. The best part is that they also have a fridge full of ice cream that's included as part of the price! Would definitely come back for lunch.
This is one of those "DIY" hotpot places that's been very popular lately, and having one at the mall is a nice option. I like that they have a wide selection of veggies, meats, seafood, carbs, and other add-ons to choose from and they do look more fresh than some other similar spots that I've been to. After filling up your bowl, they weigh it at the end and charge by the pound. I got the "Just a kick" broth and it was pretty good. Decent spot, but nothing special. Still prefer some other similar spots for overall taste. The negative was that the orders came out very haphazardly. We came as a small group but they all came out at very different times, with some other customers' orders being ready before ours (who ordered after us). They give you a buzzer and will buzz it each time a bowl is ready. Some of us started eating first because it was taking so long for the other bowls to come out, and there just didn't seem to be a good system. Seating can be tough but tables seem to free up pretty quickly. Don't forget the complimentary ice cream in the freezer by the tray/dish return area in the end!
Tang Bar is a newly opened build-your-own hot pot spot inside Brea Mall on the first floor. At the entrance, grab a large stainless steel bowl along with tongs and gloves. The ingredients bar is organized in a flow - starting with a wide selection of vegetables, moving into meats, and finishing with carbs. I usually like pairing my hot pot with a bowl of steamed rice, but that's not offered here... which might actually be a blessing if you're trying to cut back on carbs! After filling your bowl, you place it on the weigh station, choose your soup base or sauce, and wait for it to be cooked. I believe we paid $16.49/pound (1.02 pound is removed from what you see on the scale for the weight of the bowl). While waiting, there's a sauce and condiments bar where you can customize your flavors. Utensils and napkins are available near the pickup area. A nice bonus: they have a deep chest freezer stocked with complimentary ice cream to enjoy after your meal - such a nice surprise! The space itself is fairly large and open, with well-spaced tables and a small outdoor patio. That said, I wish they had a better system for seating. We visited during peak hours and it was packed. Some parties saved tables before even paying, which left those who had already ordered and were waiting for their food scrambling to find a seat.
Amazing malatang place. They have lots of vegetarian options which is rare for a malatang eatery. All their dry options are vegetarian as is their mushroom broth. I got the peppercorn flavor and it was the perfect level of spice. A kick without being so spicy it overwhelms all other flavors. It's very casual. Self serve and self seat. They also have wet wipes to wipe down your table. Their prices are reasonable--a little more expensive than other similar places, but you do get a larger selection of sauces at the sauce bar, fresher noodles, and free ice cream at the end of your meal. My tastebuds are excited to return.
This newly opened malatang bar has quickly become one of my go to spots, especially because it is so close to home. I am always craving malatang, but most places are such a drive, so having one nearby is a huge plus. What really stands out is the variety. They offer a wide selection of vegetables, meats, and noodles, so you can really customize your bowl exactly how you like it. I tried the "Perfect Kick" soup base and it definitely packed more than just a little kick. It was much spicier than I expected, but the next time I asked for it less spicy and it turned out just right. They also offer a free popsicle or ice cream, which is such a nice touch after a hot and spicy meal. The ambiance is super cute, and there is even a small fish stream running through the middle of the large table so you can eat while watching them swim. It makes the whole experience feel fun and unique.
Reallly enjoyed my malatang here. Really good selections of items and my favorite part is the broth option. The sour and savory broth (green mustard veggie) is top tier in my opinion. Sauce bar was also kept pretty stocked and they also have free ice cream and popsicle, which is a huge plus. Great way to cool that mouth down from the heat. Only issue i got with this spot is the seating. It gets pretty packed and getting a seat can be a challenge if you're not hawking. Overall, I would come back.
Located inside the Mall close to Macy's and Red Robin allows you to customize a large bowl with any combination of ingredients, including vegetables, meats, seafood, and noodles. The ability to select a broth of choice and have it cooked to order is a unique and appealing feature. Additionally, I found the premises to be very clean and well-maintained, which is always an important factor for me. I would like to specifically commend Claire, the staff member who assisted us at the front. She was absolutely amazing--extremely patient and attentive--taking the time to thoroughly explain the different broth options available. Her knowledgeable and courteous service significantly enhanced my experience. While the overall concept and service were commendable, it took a while to get our food I really do like my soup hot but again it's not quite the temperature I wanted and the broth kinda lacks or on a bland side the sauces on the sides makes it better though. Since the broth not that hot the meat kinda little tough.
This malatang place is actually pretty decent for Brea! Quite authentic. They have a wide variety of ingredients here. Protein choices here also looked pretty good for a malatang place. The restaurant itself is actually quite small, there's not a whole lot of seating, but you basically can just seat yourself anywhere. Very friendly place for eating alone. Parking here was pretty terrible though. It's good to see many non-Asians trying out malatang! My order came out to be about $12 with tax and honestly it was already pretty filling for me. I got the "just a kick" spice level and it literally was on point with "just a kick". It's more on the numbing side for the broth, tingly! My friend got the dry mix and she also quite enjoyed it. As for their sauce bar, I noticed they only really have the sesame sauce, but they don't have satay/shacha sauce. I hope they bring it here, but their sesame was actually not bad too, a lot more nuttier which I quite enjoyed. The decor here is pretty nice as well. I'm surprised there are actual goldfishes in the water stream area bc I would be worried that kids would throw food in there to "feed the fish" lol. Surprisingly it was clean though. I would definitely visit again if i'm around the area.
Review 127/365 Day Challenge We finally visited here w my Mimas for our Vimi's birthday luncheon celebration on a Tuesday at noon 12.16.25 My bestie heard great reviews about this DIY Hotpot bar located inside Brea mall on the 1st floor. Across from Red Robin burger restaurant and near the Macy Men/Furniture Department side. Service here is really great especially associate Thuy is awesome and great. When asked if she's able to wipe down the table before we take the table next after another customer was finish dining. She also checked on us a few times. The restaurant is nicely done w greenery decor and clean. It's a bar where you get a bowl and fill in whatever vegetables, proteins, different types of noodles like glass noodles and ramen available. Than at the end of the station, you weigh your bowl, pay for it. There's associate take your bowl you made and cook it for you on the broth you choose. The spice isn't so spicy at all. We got the Malatang JUST A KICK. There's a dipping sauce bar where you make your own dipping sauce. Only bottles drink available for purchase or complimentary water station. They offer Free ice cream Sandwiches & popsicles for dessert I'll definitely return with my hubby or family to enjoy again. Love the concept of this DIY hotpot. Especially for this winter weather or rainy cold days. Another great spot to eat at a mall and it isn't fast food. HEADS UP...eating near the entrance/exit of the mall at the sliding door booth/table. You may possibly get a very special uninvited guest FLY buzzing around. TL;DR Variety of customizable options. Spicy, robust broth. Complimentary popsicles as a treat for the end! Food The spicy Sichuan malatang was heart and spicy, but the Sichuan flavor was a bit strong for me. Next time, I'll try another soup base, because there's 2 bases of soups and different flavors and spice levels. There is a variety in selection of meats, seafood, vegetables, and mushrooms. You pick what you want, pay by weight, and they cook your soup. The portions are huge! I had enough for 4 portions. They also have a sauce bar for you to customize. Service and Ambiance The restaurant is so beautiful. A modern aesthetic, with water and plants. The service was kind and quick. They had utensils, togo boxes for soups and sauces, and a complimentary freezer with different popsicles.
This is my third time here, and usually it's great with minimal wait and fully stocked ingredients, but tonight was unusually crowded for a Thursday. They were out of the laksa broth, so I got the Just a Kick broth. It was good but a little bit spicy for me. It's a grab what you want malatang spot where they weigh your bowl. The interior is cute, especially the little fish river flowing down the center table. Some toppings weren't refilled fast enough and it felt a bit pricier than other malatang places, but they still had a good selection of toppings. My favorite part is the unlimited free ice cream and ice cream bars freezer next to where you return the plates. Overall, I'm glad Brea finally has a malatang place!
The restaurant is self-serve -- you pick your own ingredients, weigh them, and then they cook it for you. The food comes out in about ten minutes. It gets pretty busy and sometimes there aren't any open seats, but people usually finish quickly so the turnover is fast. The ingredients are very fresh. I ordered the satay flavor and it was quite good; the mild spicy option was also nice. Be careful with udon and noodle options though -- they're very heavy, so the weight adds up and it becomes really expensive. It's much more cost-effective to choose meats and lighter vegetables. Dont forget free ice cream.
A solid spot for malatang in the Brea area. I came on a Thursday afternoon at 1 PM and it was relatively busy. I enjoyed how there was a wide variety of vegetables and meat. For the beef, the options included wagyu, short plate, brisket, and chuck. I thought this was very impressive since most places only have one option for beef. They also have plastic gloves for when you're getting the food. The food was $14.99 a pound. Ambiance: 5/5. The restaurant has a spacious, beautiful interior and outdoor seating. I recommend parking right in the lot right outside the door. Service: 5/5. Very friendly service and quick turnaround time after paying. I got the "just a kick" broth and it was delicious! It had a good numbing spice. The only downside was that I wish there was more broth. Additionally, the meat was too chewy; could be because it was overcooked or the meat is sliced too thick. Me and my daughter love this place. The chopsticks and soup spoon look a little dirty and they need to restock the sauce station more often and offer a better labeling and recommendations on sauce making for others that have no clue. I think about his place probably at least once a week, because I love this place so much. They have a wonderful selection of ingredients to choose from. Mediocre malatang for $14.99/lb in a small, crowded space with slow service. Waited 40 minutes for our food and had to stand around for seats to open up. I didn't enjoy the hot & sour broth or the dipping sauce bar. I've eaten at many soup restaurants. This is the first time I disliked both the soup and sauces. My dipping sauce tasted worse the more I tried to adjust it. Worth noting: they include the weight of your bowl in the total, which some other places don't. On a more positive note, I appreciated the large ingredients selection. Despite the small area, they maximized their space well and the ambience is nice. They have free ice cream bars available in the freezer. read more

I was walking the Brea mall when suddenly an incredible smell hit my nose. When I tell you I followed my nose to find the source, I mean it. I see Tang Bar and I instantly knew I wanted to try it just based off how cute it looked! When I saw the self-serve portion, I was hesitant as I am not a fan of these types of establishments but the smell convinced me to give it a shot. Napa cabbage & lots of different beef cuts including wagyu went into my bowl. A wide variety of mushrooms was definitely another selling point. I loved the options of noodles as well. I got the broth/soup bowl with "just a lil kick" of spice. $14.99/lb and I ended up with 1.94lbs. Ended up being $29.08 before taxes. I sat and waited for my food and to my surprise it was done quickly. The soup had such a delicious smell and I immediately dug in. The spice was just the right amount but definitely spicy that it made my nose run haha but I could not stop eating it. I enjoyed every single bite and the soup was one of the best I've had. This place is straight forward: grab a bowl and tongs and select your ingredients. Get it weighed and select soup or dry and a flavor. Pretty much self service here- get your own condiments, water, utensils, ice cream. Ambience was fine - just a casual setting within a mall. Good: flavor was great, many fresh ingredients were available - more selection than the usual malatang places. Bad: my bowl was missing some ingredients I had when I weighed it like a beef ball and a fish cake. My bowl also came with chicken meat which I didn't pick up. To management: I'm not really sure what happened but I recommend to double check how you're managing different orders/different ingredients to avoid mixing or misplacement. Some friends I came with also were missing a few items like fish ball with roe in their soups. It's definitely strange, never happened to me before at a malatang place to have missing or ingredients I didn't select! read more

Be prepared for a long wait but the food is delicious. We got into line a little before the restroom and it took around 30-40 min in line. They have little time markers to tell you the estimate wait time from that point but it really depends on the customers and how long they take choosing. The concept is really cool, pick your meat, noodles, and sides and then the soup base. Once you get to the register you get a number and they call you back to pick up. There's a sauce bar too. The interior is pretty with a water like fountain down the middle of one table. The outdoor seating is really nice at night too with the lighting and I honestly prefer to be a little cold when eating hot soup. Overall the wait is long from the line being 30-40 min and then waiting for your food another 30 min. If you're not starving I recommend trying it out if not try to come on a weekday or non busy hour. read more

So glad we saw this place while walking through Brea mall. We immediately stopped by to see their central mini water feature with fish. When you walk in, you grab all your ingredients, then go to the register to pick your broth/sauce and pay. Eventually you pick up your own tray when they call you up with the buzzer. Our favorite broth is hands down the laksa! It was sold out one time we went at 7 pm. But we finally got to try it when we went to eat at 4:30 pm. Best malatang we've had in a while! read more
came here for dinner and it wasn't too packed. interior is very cool. they have lots of stations to pick out your meats, veggies, and other sides! although a few of the options were not refilled, but it was close to closing time. i got the just a kick broth and it was perfect. not too spicy, although i could've had it a bit spicier. the broth didn't come out as hot as i wanted it but it was still good! my meat had a metallic look to it though? not sure what it was from. and the meats were pretty tough to chew. at the end you can grab an ice cream bar! staff was nice as well read more

My wife and I wanted to eat something warm when we were at the Brea Mall for dinner, so we thought we would try out the new place that had opened recently. Tang Bar just hit the spot for us as it has hot soup and all the fresh ingredients you can think of. They charge by the pound ($14.99/lb), so I tried to estimate a pound's worth of food, but I ended up going over just a bit. Anyway, both my wife and I chose the Laksa soup base, and it was really flavorful. My wife really liked it, but I thought it was a little too spicy for my taste. I asked if they could add some soup to dilute it and they quickly added chicken soup, which greatly reduced the spiciness. Service was really really good, and they were very polite. Tang Bar in the Brea Mall is a really fun spot if you like hot pot or want something different from the usual mall food. The setup is simple: grab a bowl, pick your ingredients, weigh it, and choose your broth. They have a huge selection of fresh meats, seafood, tofu, noodles, and veggies, all neatly displayed behind the counter. Everything looks clean and well organized, and the staff is quick to help if you're not sure what something is. Once you've built your bowl, they weigh it and then cook it in the broth you pick. The broths are flavorful and not overly salty, and the portions end up being just right since you control what goes in. I like that it feels lighter and fresher than a traditional restaurant hot pot, but still satisfying. Tang Bar is part of a small chain with a few locations in California and beyond, and they also do delivery through DoorDash. Soooo good but lowkey cross contamination risk because the tongs were limited and I saw people had to use one tong to pick everything up from meat, seafood, veggies, and noodles. I was extremely careful but you really can't assume everyone is. My stomach is made of steel so it wasn't an issue for me, but for those with sensitive belly's, you may want to be cautious. Came by to give this place a try! I saw it was new and the aesthetic was super cute. Once you go in you get your bowl and tongs and serve yourself. They had a large variety of vegetables, fish, cake, meat, and other toppings for your bowl. I especially like that they had a dry bowl option because I like it way better. So I opted for the sesame dry bowl and it came out in about five minutes. While I was waiting, I was able to get myself my sauce, which wasn't super necessary since my bowl had a lot of sesame sauce already, but it was still fun. They also have a water station with their utensils. I got to sit on the long table next to the little fish and fountain which was cute and I like that. Overall was a pretty nice setting, and the food had a good flavor. At the end there's a bonus sweet treat which was super cool and I opted for an ice cream sandwich. Can't wait to come back next time. Although it's a little pricier than other places, I can definitely see why because the quality is higher and ambience is nice and not stuffy. read more
Although I was a big fan of the revolving sushi restaurant, Tang Bar has been a refreshing replacement and when my husband and I arrived on a rainy evening looking for a hot meal, the fragrance of steaming soup aromatics lured us from the mall entrance into their restaurant that is half exposed into the mall's lobby hallway with inviting tables for families and a long stylish central table adorned with live colorful fish swimming in it's fountain. Be cautious about the $14.99/lb price since the self-service line is tricky when you "eat with your eyes" with the many soup ingredients, from fresh veggies and noodles to mouth watering shabu-thin meats. I particularly loved the lamb. They have two sizes of bowls that you are served once you're at the end of the line to weigh and pay. We tried both the spicy and just a kick broths and both were delicious. You bus your dishes to the window of the kitchen closest to the condiment bar. There is a small $.10 charge for to-go containers but we made a meal the next day since we have a hot pot at home as well. Walking around the mall and the large parking lots make this dining experience worth it. Staff is quick and kind in service, and joining their free membership earns you points, like $5 off towards your visit. read more

Had high hopes but first experience was really rough. This is one dirty restaurant. Tables are left unwiped. Customers have to wipe their own spaces down. The food trays are heavily stained and gross looking. Outdoor dining area is also a storage zone for random stuff. Condiment area looks like a crime scene. Ran out of rice and ice cream around 745pm and were told not to make more or refill the ice cream chest. Cant say I have any desire to return. read more

This is a solid malatang place! I was craving Szechuan and the spicy Szechuan broth more than satisfied my itch. 10/10 malatang, I am so full and happy. :) It was a bit more expensive than I was expecting. By weight, the pricing is currently about $17/lb plus tax. I ended up paying $34 for my bowl, which I mostly finished except for the ramen noodles. I'm not totally sure if they account for the bowl when weighing. I would say my bowl could feed me for 1.5 meals. You start at the front and choose your ingredients, then weigh it and pay at the front. They give you a buzzer and you pick up your food at the counter, and there's also a place to return plates and trays at the front as well. There is a water dispenser at the front. They have plenty of vegetable, mushroom, root vegetable, meat, seafood, and fish ball/meat ball selections. Unfortunately, they did not have crown daises, which is one of my favorites. Some of my favorites in my bowl were the scallops, glass noodles, different beef options, and fishballs :) There's also a classic sauce bar with big sauce bowls. The service was quick, as there's usually always someone at the counter to help you out and answer questions. Everyone was very nice. There's free ice cream in a freezer, with things like ice cream sandwiches and ice cream bars. There was so much seating. Tang Bar has by far been my favorite malatang spot in OC! Stumbled across this place in the mall and I was excited to try seeing the variety of meats, noodles, veggies, and broth. I'm so happy that they offer mushroom broth, perfect for the vegans. I'm not vegan or anything but I appreciate a nice healthy and light tasting broth to pair with the sauce and ingredients. Their just-a-kick malatang is also very good, although it might be more mild tasting compared to other places. They also take the initiative to ask about allergies as well which I do appreciate. Sometimes it's hard to find a seat during busy hours but I can manage. The free ice cream at the end is kind of like a reward lol. The decor is also nice, there's a little pond on the big table with fish inside which is nice to look at! read more

The place was very nice for a small space. The food was okay. I had better. The reason why I gave this place a 3 star was because of the service. For some apparent reason they lost what I had picked out and which it was 2 bowls. They told us to go redo our bowls so we did and when we picked out our bowls again, went back to give it to them, they said that they only meant 1. Literally waste of my time. read more

I like that it includes Wagyu in their selection. Laksa soup base was quite tasteful. Free ice cream at the end is a nice touch. For the most part, it is all self service. It's conveniently located inside the Brea mall opposite of Red Robin. Google map will bring you straight to their door. The decor was modern and the staff seem friendly. read more
