This small, cozy coffee house on the south side of Taos off the Paseo is my dream idea of the type of coffee shop I would love to own and enjoy visit. Cozy interior is decorated with local artwork and comfortable furniture. Coffee is incredible from the full-service bar. Special features like sandwiches, wraps, cookies, and more make this place a one-stop to get your Taos morning going. The beautiful wood carved entrance doors are mesmerizing. i loved that they carry sugar free almond milk! Such a rare find! i can not do dairy or sugar, so at most coffee shops i have to bring my own sugar free almond milk and just get an Americano. But here i was able to get a latte! And one of the owners was so nice helping me figure out some information i needed as i was just passing through. read more

My issue was resolved but I will note that customers will be asked loudly if they want to leave a tip even if you are not dining in. I feel this is a psychological way to earn more money by making someone feel bad if they do not leave a tip even if there is no reason to. If it isn't, why does the person asking for tips say it loudly for everyone to hear? My suggestion, treat customers well, leave a tip jar on the counter and you will get more tips if you don't "ask" for them. Also, after requesting a refund from the owner because of this suggestive tactic, she stated she thought the problem was with me. She threatened to sue me if I left a negative review of her business. read more

Conveniently located on the southern end of the town, the unpretentious baristas were upbeat and positive that Monday morning. They had our orders (hot tea and a cafe latte) ready quickly and accurately. The interior is cute with everything wood, including the low ceiling's log beams and smattering of tables and chairs. There is a small seating area out in front as well. I was surprised by how many customers were just hanging out in there having leisurely conversations rather than trying to get to work since it was Monday, but I appreciated that it meant that regulars and locals felt comfortable lounging around in this shop. I watched enviously as another patron accepted a nice looking breakfast burrito. Free wifi from what I could tell. Paved parking lot (for you motorcyclists). I'd totally go back. read more

My husband and I were looking for coffee early, around 6:30 and this was the only coffee shop open, so we felt lucky to just find a spot. We each ordered the large americano and a sausage breakfast burrito. The americanos were way better than Starbucks, very smooth and the burrito was great too. Overpriced food that is not made to order. Very good coffee and nice music selection playing; however, I can't give more than one star due to the entire experience. The people in front of me paid $21.03 for their order! What the heck did they order? The two people in line after us had an order that was over $30. I ordered two breakfast burritos (the price is not listed on the menu) and two 16 oz. coffees. My order was $17.63! Apparently the burritos are $5.99 each and are pre-made each morning and then wrapped in foil (where they steam until purchased). When I unwrapped my burrito I immediately noticed a soggy tortilla which did not entirely deter me, yet one bite of very, very dry potatoes that were flavorless left me very disappointed and I took them back to the counter. The woman at the front counter gave me my money back but seemed offended and made sure to tell me I was the first person to return burritos. She also would not take the burritos from me and pushed them back to me when I placed them in the counter telling me I can go ahead and keep them. I threw them away. She definitely could have handled it in a much kinder and more professional way. read more

They serve really delicious coffee in a charming atmosphere, and their pastry selection is tasty and immense. And, if you don't have time to just sit and enjoy the comfy seating, they are also one of the few drive-through coffee opportunities in Taos! The baristas are fast and efficient and they seem to make the coffee perfectly every time. My only caution is that there is a VERY specific culture to the place, and if you don't know it, things can get confusing. For example, they sell these delicious oatmeal cups, and I bought one to take to work and eat. The cups come sealed,and I was getting my coffee to go. I didn't ask them to open it and pour hot water in, but they did it automatically because, as the barista put it, "that is what they ALWAYS do!!!!." Or once I asked for a "cup holder" not a "cup carrier" and they had no clue what I wanted. They also refused to give me one because I only had one drink. (The cup holder in my car is broken - I swear I'm not wasteful!) It's just little things like the fact that the barista mildly scolded me for handing her the lid to my travel mug because "nobody ever does that." (Most other places I've encountered, the barista has asked for the lid and put in on for me.) It's just it's own unique place. However, they seem to have a ton of regulars (who they all know by name), so I strongly suspect that, once you adapt to their culture you'll do very well. Overall, it's a great place. Just be aware that they do things THEIR way. It's not a bad way, mind you, just different enough that one should be aware of it. The coffee and pastries, however? TOTALLY worth it! read more

I've always had a love-hate relationship with this place, but couldn't put my finger on it as to why. Then I read another review from someone who hit the nail on the head. This lady said that Taos Java had a very specific culture and she's right. But she didn't take it quite far enough. This is some of the best coffee in town, but you have to play by the rules to get it. It's like the Soup Nazi from Seinfeld: if you play by the rules and put up with the attitude (as several other reviewers have noted), the payoff is great. They charge you $1 for using a card. They refuse service if you are on your cell phone. They don't like chatting in line. There are other rules, too. Don't form the line in the wrong direction. Don't hand them the lid of your travel mug. You must always use the precise words they use for things. (For example, be very specific when requesting a milk substitute.) And god forbid of you complain or ask for something out of the ordinary. They can be very stingy with their paper goods, too. But, depending on your tolerance level, it can be worth it. Whatever coffee beans they use are incredible, and the light fare selection is out of this world. Also, for what it is worth, their espresso machine is a gorgeous, complicated work of art. If you can put up with what another reviewer called "the weird stressed out vibes from the lady at the counter," you will have one of the best cups of coffee of your life. read more
