The biggest issue is the lack of flavor and "limpness" in their food, both in texture and quality. The flavors are outdated and unimpressive, while the quality comes across as if their food was just offloaded from a Sysco truck. We've been going for a looong time. Family favorite. Their service is excellent and I love the murals and the vibe is good. But the food is less tasty than it once was. The carnitas flavor wasn't right. The enchiladas suizas were bitter. Their flavors used to be spot on. And the prices have gone up. I am a bit of a chilaquiles b*tch, so I ordered the chilaquiles divorciado style (not an option on the menu), so I could try both roja and verde salsas, having never visited this establishment before. I suppose I could have just asked the VERY warm and friendly woman who took care of me for her recommendation first, but I wanted to taste them both for myself. I have to say, the roja was more reminiscent of an italian marinara sauce than any roja salsa I've ever tried. The verde salsa though, oh my goodness it was divine! Bright with acidity but balanced by depth of flavor. I felt very cared for here, and more than the flavor of any food this is what keeps me coming back to a place. So glad the timing worked out, I've been wanting to visit this spot for a while. read more

Put in an order for 4 people of take-out for Mother's Day, as Mom had returned back to her (senior assisted living) apt just a few days prior. It sounded as though the order taker did a good job, although not asking for a name for the order. And sure enough, when we arrived for pick-up, that's the first info asked for. Regardless, we were able to proceed by repeating some of the meals ordered. Everything was ready when we arrived. Mom & I both ordered a combination #6- a chicken enchilada for me and a ground beeef for Mom, with chile relleno, rice, black beans for me & refried for Mom. Grandson had a chicken quesadilla and my son a combination. The consensus was the same: the food was just ok. I had some crispy yet chewy part come off the chile relleno, most likely from the stem- that wasn't fun. The chicken enchilada was the best part of my meal, with the chicken being juicy and tender. This place, pre covid... had so much to offer. Sunday, all you can eat brunch was wild. Used to have a two burrito special for about 5 bucks, also was huge on the side of chips and salsa, now is alot smaller. I get it times are tough, and menus are adapted and reflective of this everywhere. I was disappointed to what was once a 6 dollar nacho is now almost double the price with the same wow factor. Granted this place is hit and miss, I won't lie it always was and though it might have almost got a 4th star before, its a 3 star now. The family visit to the Troutdale area in Oregon would go amiss without a visit to a locally established Mexican diner. Tapatio although seemingly and curiously rated below its punching ability really surprised me when we're down there this for dinner this evening. The food was fantastic and the salsa served with the tortilla chips was absolutely on the money. The dinner entrées that my family and I ordered were all tasty and prepared well. I have no idea why some reviewers have slated this restaurant. I just did not see anything wrong with the food or its taste. The authentic Mexican horchata was just right and had a balanced flavor and with just the right amount of sugar. The service was fantastic as well and we were treated well. The churros and flan were a great finish. I highly recommend this place if you are visiting the area. Great place after spending the day wandering the gorge! read more

We thought we'd give Tapatio a try after passing by it so many times. The average star rating had me a bit worried but I can see why it is rated the way it is. It's not bad, but it's not great either. The food was OK. I had the grilled shrimp plate with salad and rice. Not bad. The service was really REALLY slow, but friendly. Our server was a bit overwhelmed as she seemed to be on her own. I saw her taking orders, serving food and making drinks behind the bar. Speaking of, the special peach margarita was terrible. It was weak and flavorless. The Cadillac margaritas were not that much better and rather overpriced. Dinner for two with four margaritas came to $105 with tip. I don't mind dropping that much for a meal, but this just didn't feel worth it. I'm not sure if we will come back or not. Oh, I also got one of those SAVE 10% ON YOUR ENTIRE MEAL auto-coupons when I checked in. Our server didn't understand what this yelp coupon was or how to use it. The service was on time for set up and take down, and the service staff was friendly and accommodating beyond words. Food is a big part of making for a successful wedding experience. Lived in Troutdale for 5 years now, so close to this place and finally stopped by here. Seriously, you have been missing out. That Mexican food craving, satisfied. The place doesn't look much on the outside but inside is so different. Inside is ethnically pleasing and the murals are beautiful. Love the bar with the shingles! Anyways, the food was so good, my husband and I both wished we were starving when we came here because it was perfect and the portions were great. Upon arrival we got chips and dip. Food was good, but our experience was ruined when we got our bill. .50 charge for more salsa (the tiny bowl that wasn't enough to begin with), and the 1.98 charge for using a VISA card. I know it doesn't sound like much money, but I am sick and tired of being nickel and dimed !!! Can't say that I would return after the semi-palatable food we had here. My $14 or so combo of a chicken burrito and chile relleno was drowning in sauce that had zero flavor yet made everything sadly soggy. The chile relleno...cheese inside was not really melted and literally tasted squeaky/rubbery. Refried beans - flavorless Chicken inside the soggy burrito was dry. With restaurants open again I decided to get lunch with friends since this is close to one of their homes. Place seemed clean and server was pleasant. I noticed someone else pointed out that the chips with salsa was smaller than what you typically get. Prices are higher than my usually spot. The meats they use seem to be completely unseasoned. Thankfully the mole is in a really good sauce so that dish was fine. Sometimes places use too much chocolate I hear, but that wasn't a problem here. I'm used to chimichangas having lettuce, cheese, and tomato, so this was pretty plain. It wasn't folded like one either and was really small. I usually get enchiladas rather than burritos so I went for something different this time. My mistake. Plain shredded chicken in a tortilla with sauce and a little cheese. Very plain. My friend got a similar combo plate and they switched them. Since he doesn't usually get chimichangas he didn't realize until halfway through that there were just beans, no chicken. I hadn't touched mine yet so didn't know. Had to switch and I wasn't too happy. He uses hot sauce so it kind of ruined my food a bit for me. Chimichanga was just as bland as the burrito. Kind of why he was using hot sauce in the first place. I ordered beans and cheese and couldn't find any cheese in it. We were halfway done when we realized his mistake and I just didn't feel like dealing with it. One plus is that you have a choice of beans for your side. Although Tapatio only had a rating of 3 stars, I thought I'd give it a try again, as I hadn't had food from there in years. So, this evening I ordered two combination plates from the restaurant and had it delivered by DoorDash. The food was warm and presented in typical fashion, with rice and beans alongside our burritos and enchiladas. It was a large portion, as well, which I was happy to see. When I dug in, though, I found the flavors to be pretty uninspired. The chicken in my enchiladas was soft and shredded nicely, but had little flavor. The chopped "asada" in my taco was dry, even more flavorless and actually bordered on being pretty nasty. The rice and beans were decent, but nothing special. Overall, I probably won't return to Tapatio again until I notice an improvement in ratings. The food seems to be on par with other Mexican restaurants in the Gresham/Troutdale area - BLAH! This is our go-to mexican restaurant in the area. We used to go to La Costita but grew tired of them. Our first visit to Tapatio was actually not great and we said we wouldn't go back. Thankfully we gave them another shot and now we go there probably once a month. My wife loves their salsa verde and gets it on enchiladas instead of the red sauce they usually come with. I usually go for one of their large burritos and our kids get the kids burritos without sauce. We usually get takeout and it's ready within 10 minutes. This review is not based on service, only food. Tapatio used to be so good, but the last couple of times we have eaten there were extremely disappointing. The salsa tastes way spicier than it used to, the ground beef now has a strange flavor and is so watery that it soaked through my tostada shell. The tortilla bowl for my wife's taco salad tasted like it was fried in super old grease. We got to sit at a wobbly table, too, which made the dining experience all the more pleasurable. All in all, this time is the last time. We spent $30 on the most disappointing meal we have had in a while and I'm not in any hurry to do that again. read more

Delivered food- if they don't get it right and you complain to the source you better prepare to pay for the next delivery in terms of vindictive behavior!!! Went back for lunch the other day and ordered the shrimp and steak fajitas. Just as good as I remember. They get the food out quick. The update is for the fried ice cream. I don't want to sound too harsh, but this place was horrible and I hope to never step foot into a place like this again. Not authentic at all. I've been to better "Mexican" restaurants in deep woods West Virginia and Kentucky. Never trust a place that calls themselves authentic and they only use cheddar cheese and refried beans that taste like they just "sloofed" out of a dented can. 2 adults and 2 children rang up a bill of $70...and that was with 4 waters...no alcohol! I felt robbed. Not to mention, they screwed up a simple order of a bean and cheese burrito. I specifically ordered "beans, rice, cheese". My vegetarian son took a bite and immediately found that it had chicken in it. The server apologized and took it off the bill but still....it came out to $70!!! The damage was already done. I was ripped off. My 5 and 8 year old daughters were disgusted by their food! My 8 year old looked around at one point and quietly said, " I can't believe people are actually enjoying this place". She's fortunate enough to have eaten at several, truly authentic Mexican restaurants. My son wasn't around to hear this cause the salsa was passing through him in bathroom. My 5 year old said as we drove off, "I give this place one star". Ugh....never again. I should've went to Taco Bell. Sad but true. We are good people and raise our kids to respect others....but WTF?!?! Sometimes....sometimes, places like this get to even the best of us. What was I thinking? My meal was not quite worthy of the tres estrellas but most of my party was pretty happy with their meals but I'm a little jaded when it comes to Mexican food. I like it when it feels more homemade than commercial. That being said my review begins with my plate. Three asada tacos that kind of appeared ok on the surface but the corn tortilla looked a bit too soft for my liking. Usually I'm used to tacos being wrapped in a dual corn tortillas that have a little more substance. The biggest issue was the crispy bits of carne that were mostly crunchy and not so much moist and flavorful. But most edible but not enjoyable. The rest of the table seemed relatively satisfied with their meals but according to my sister-in-law they pretty much are there every week so it's obvious that they really like the place me I could take it or leave it and my wife feels the same. We're a bit spoiled cause we love Mi Pueblo in the Clackamas area which is so much better. I'll finish off this review by saying that I might try it again but I would definitely not get the tacos asada but might try one of the enchilada platters. read more

Due to COVID 19, my go-to Mexican food place hasn't re-opened their doors to the public. My boyfriend and I tried this restaurant for the first time within the last month through Doordash and I was pleasantly pleased with the burrito verde that I had order at that time. Quite a bit spicy with no warning but overall very tasty. Wanting to try them again tonight using UberEats, I opted to stay on the slightly healthier side with their Taco Salad Cazuela. The item is described as being a salad with lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream, guac and your choice of meat in a deep-fried tortilla bowl for $10.75. It looks pretty good on the website so I gave that a go, minus the tomatoes. That is hardly what arrived. What I received was a cardboard container of wilted lettuce, cheese and chicken (along with my my boyfriend's order of shrimp fajitas as well as salsa and tortilla chips on the side). Now, I know I opted for no tomatoes but it was still supposed to come with sour cream, guac and ... um, yeah the BOWL! I irritatedly flicked through the lettuce and broke up some of the large pieces of chicken to find a soggy, corn tortilla at the bottom of the container. Yeah, nice save guys. With plenty of ranting to my boyfriend, I just mixed everything together, threw in some of our own sour cream as well as some rice from my boyfriend's order and the side of salsa. Overall, what a waste of money! The only good thing I can say about it is that it still ended being fairly filling but utterly disappointing. Since I had a decent previous experience, I am still willing to try out other items they have. However, I will definitely not being ordering this item anytime soon through UberEats. I strongly recommend if you are curious to try the item, go to the restaurant yourself and it may come out better. If not, at least that way, if you receive what I did, it would be easier to complain and get your money back. read more

Came here with a group and I'm pretty sensitive to alcohol. We spent over $40 in drinks and not one person could taste the alcohol in the large, overpriced drinks. Not even a buzz. They also tried to over-charge us random fees that didn't make sense. When we asked, they had no explanation for the random mysterious charges... Also, don't order the portion for two fajitas because it's not more than the portion for one. They just give you an extra plate of beans, lettuce and rice for $5 more...Everything is over-priced for what it is and we won't be back to this total rip-off restaurant with dishonest people. read more

I can only review based on my experience with delivery. The food tasted great and didn't disappoint. The menu doesn't really specify that all the burritos are covered in sauce. My son specifically wanted one that wasn't. But he really liked it so it was fine. I got the nachos with asada added, and it was very good. Would've liked more toppings to chip ratio. But that's usually how they are. Only complaint, they put the burrito in a cardboard container. Which makes no sense. The sauce totally saturated the container and became so soggy it was leaking through. read more
