When my partner and I arrived, we weren't greeted by the waitress at all. Instead, she looked at us, walked straight to the back, and made us feel as though we weren't supposed to be there. When I politely asked if we could sit at one of the tables, the bartender told us no and pointed us to where we were expected to sit. To make matters worse, we were seated next to a couple who smelled absolutely terrible, which made the dining experience even more unpleasant. Overall, the service was unwelcoming and unprofessional. As people of color, we couldn't help but feel uncomfortable based on how we were treated from the moment we walked in. It's disappointing, especially considering this is a Mexican restaurant. Went to Taqueria Gramercy with my late dog Beau's sister and her owner after recently having to say goodbye to Beau, my 10-year-old dog and genuinely one of the greatest loves of my life, due to aggressive metastatic cancer. The night was meant to help comfort my loss, honor Beau's memory, and talk through everything that medically happened to him so hopefully his sister never has the same outcome. A stranger next to us at the bar saw the embroidered image of Beau on my sweatshirt and confused Beau's sister for the dog on my shirt. That sparked a conversation about our dogs, grief, and loss, and honestly became the most genuine and human part of the entire evening. Unfortunately, the restaurant itself failed miserably. The food was mediocre, the drinks were average at best, but we kept ordering because we were having a meaningful night together. We ordered appetizers, entrees, dessert, multiple rounds of drinks, and eventually I ordered three shots of what was sold to us as Clase Azul for our new friend and in honor of Beau. $75. I work in the restaurant industry and specifically with tequila. What they served us was absolutely not Clase Azul. The "Reposado" we ordered was also crystal clear. Anyone familiar with tequila knows how absurd that is. We politely brought it to the bartender's attention and made it very clear we were NOT asking for free drinks or trying to make a scene. I even explained that I work in hospitality too, and when a customer respectfully tells me something is wrong, I appreciate it because it gives me the opportunity to fix it. That is literally the job. Apparently not here. The bartender himself was kind, but the manager immediately went into full ego-defense mode. Defensive, dismissive, smug, and visibly irritated that anyone dared question him. He eventually took a shot himself to "prove" it, then gave the lazy response that "tequila burns." No -- cheap tequila burns like lighter fluid. Clase Azul does not. At that point, we accepted the outcome and moved on. Ordering another round of drinks was literally our way of saying: okay, clearly they are not going to address this, so let's put the focus back where it belongs and continue honoring Beau. We gave them the opportunity to fix the situation professionally. They chose not to. Fine. Shame on them if that's how they run their business, but we were not going to let it ruin our night. No yelling. No disruption. No scene. Then the bartender came back over and told us the manager wanted us to pay immediately and leave -- while we still had full drinks sitting in front of us. That is not hospitality. That is an insecure manager on a power trip trying to flex authority because his ego got bruised after customers calmly questioned whether they were being served fake premium liquor. And honestly, if your response to a respectful complaint is to retaliate against paying customers instead of professionally handling the situation, you are not qualified to manage a restaurant. Hospitality requires emotional maturity, professionalism, and basic people skills -- not sulking because someone challenged you. Also worth noting: they added a credit card surcharge despite us paying cash and never corrected it. The irony is that the only real hospitality we experienced all night came from a complete stranger sitting beside us at the bar. Thankfully, the manager failed at ruining what actually mattered. The night was about Beau -- a dog capable of bringing warmth, connection, and humanity to complete strangers just from a stitched image on a sweatshirt. Meanwhile the actual manager of the restaurant couldn't even manage basic decency. That says everything. read more

The a la carte tacos were unfortunately one of the only positives about the experience. Music is obnoxiously loud, restricting conversation across a table and even next to you. They do take reservations but no phone number so you have to stick around and wait for your name to be called with your whole party or else you'll be moved to end of the line. One of the few places in the city that has refried beans, their chips are great and I enjoy their salsa. My go to is their steak quesadilla, it can be a little oily, but it's delicious and they give really great portions of steak. Every order comes with the best complimentary chips and salsa, but adding on guac is a must. It's just incredible guacamole, nothing else to say. -Tacos tacos tacos! Tacos are pretty small, so my suggestion is at least two. I always go with one carnitas and one steak, and they never disappoint. The meat is so juicy and tender and the corn tortillas taste homemade. -Rice and beans! Sounds basic, but the rice and beans here are my favorite ever. I always think back to a sign at the JC location that says 'the beans are made with pork fat and love' and yes, yes they are. This location has a nice sized outdoor dining section, so it wasn't hard to snag an outdoor space on an unusually hot day. Service was on point. I didn't see the inside, but it looked like they had a nice bar area. I'm sad to live far from Taqueria, but happy to know that after a few year hiatus it's just as good as ever. I've only rarely had tacos here, despite the name. I mainly come on Fridays for their chiles rellenos special. That's green poblano chiles stuffed with cheese and served with a wonderful red sauce. They're so labor-intensive to make, they only serve them one day a week. Once a customer told me their steak tacos are just like Mexico City street tacos, and she thought they were the best in NY. I've never been to Mexico, but tried the steak taco, and it really is good. Good happy hour specials on beer and margaritas. Went here with my girlfriend for a the first time a few months ago and it was a TERRIBLE experience. Our waiter flat out SUCKED. She was cold, ignored us for a solid 45mins and just didn't know what a waiter was supposed to do. That was such a bad experience it overshadowed the food. BUT, when you want tacos, you want tacos. Many places don't give chips and salsa for free anymore. Cons: Skimpy on the chicken in the two Tacos Dorados Pollos. Literally it was 90% cheese and lettuce inside. Very Disappointing. It was 3 thin shreds of chicken per taco. We almost lost our marbles when we saw that our beloved Taqueria St Marks was coming to our very own Gramercy. We watched for months with great anticipation as it was being built. Finally went tonight at our first possible opportunity and it did not disappoint. Being a San Diego native I have pretty damn high standards for tacos and Taqueria St Marks has been my crutch since moving east 5 years ago. It has gotten me through those long droughts of Mexican fare when the longing was so real. Taqueria still is and will always be the best mexican food in Manhattan. The most authentic. Just leagues above the rest. For those who don't know, here's some tips. Always ask for the spicy salsa in addition to the one that comes with the chips by default. The guac is awesome, though be mindful that the one at Gramercy location is diff than one at st marks. Its much chunkier, which we would never complain about. The margarita are great. Ask for a cadillac which comes with the addition of grand marnier. Makes all the difference. The quesadillas are the bomb.com. Best tacos are the bistec, barbacoa, langua, suadero, and my absolute favorite cabeza. Lastly. The tortas are not to be forgotten. So good. When you visit, you will understand.
