Also, you don't get much variety unless you go with enough people to order family style. I'd prefer (in this order) Bombay Bistro, Madras Pavilion, or even Star of India (across Anderson). I'm no Indian food connoisseur, but I love this place. I don't particularly care if it's authentic or whatever other people have complained about in other reviews, I think it's delicious. My coworker and I order lunch here at least once a week. I'm really into the coconut curry with garlic naan so I can't comment on much else on the menu but my coworker always really likes whatever she orders. I order on their website and have never had a problem. It's always ready and waiting for me when I come to pick it up and the staff is always super nice. read more

Yummo! Nice balance of affordable quality food in a casual and clean setting. Naan was yummy and the vegetarian options are great. Meals are under 10 buks and the portions are just right. I felt satisfied. Not overly stuffed, which happens too easily at those Indian buffets. read more

A little disappointed by fast food feel of this place. Someone earlier called Tarka "Clay Pit's younger brother", just more casual and affordable. I would say they are more related to Rice Ball cafe or maybe even Taco Cabana. You build your own dish: choose sauce and protein, get a number, seat yourself. Beer and wine selection is actually decent. Service in our case was medium-slow but friendly. Now on the food. Samosa chaat was ok. Garlic naan was not great at all. It was dry and tasted like tortilla with garlic and olive oil on top. Nothing wrong with tortilla, just a little unexpected in the Indian restaurant. Lamb Vindaloo didn't taste bad, but I couldn't get over the feeling it's Indian influenced Mexican dish. This statement applies to everything I had here. Bottom line: if you don't mind fast food places probably add another star to my review. It's not authentic Indian food, it won't blow your mind and it is not a great place for romantic dinner. But it's affordable and casual, just the way a restaurant in a strip mall should be. read more

So some friends of mine tried here and said - there's a fast food Indian restaurant near that Wal-Mart on Anderson. So we tried it on a Sunday afternoon. The SO has a lot of students who feed him so he's always eating Indian food - but I rarely get any. I have to saw whoever reviewed this and said it was like Pei-Wei isn't half wrong/. Like Pei Wei you get "fast" Americanized eastern food. It's healthy, fresh and I can identify everything I eat. (I used to live in San Antonio and learned to ask about mixed barbacoa). We got the vegie pakora (read Indian tempura fritters) and ate those fast they were so good. I tried the chicken kebob and had plenty of nicely grilled chicken on a bed of sauteed Indian spiced veggies. The SO had chicken korma which had a nice nutty flavor to the creamy sauce. The rice was loooong grains and seasoned with whole cumin... light and fluffy. The mint tamarind yogurt sauce was tasty on everything. So traditionalists might scoff but we enjoyed the meal - Sweetie ordered his hot and I whimped along with the mild but all in all we were both satisfied. I want to come back to try the vegie dishes which looks tempting as well as their chai. The mango lemonade was good enough for the SO he drank about 4 or 5 glasses. I tried the limca which was slightly phosphated...in the bottle but tasty. So for a fun inexpensive meal try here. It's run by the same people who do Clay Pol just way more relaxed. read more

This is our new favorite lunch spot for Indian food. I don't even miss the variety of the traditional buffet places. I always order the chicken saag with a side of naan, and it makes me so happy. I usually order it hot, and it's spicy enough without being too crazy. So, if you're into super spicy, you will probably want whatever level is above hot. I've also tried the vindaloo and curry chicken naanini. The vindaloo is yummy, but I've had better. The naanini seemed like a great idea that just didn't quite come together. It was a bit bland. But my favorite Indian dish to order anywhere is saag, and they make a pretty damn fine saag here. Bonus points for being fast, convenient (love online ordering), clean, and affordable. read more

Don't go here for the ambiance; it's deliberately a fast food joint. But don't let that food you. I went with a friend and her toddler for a catch up lunch on a week day. We may have been the first ones there, but it quickly filled up. The counter staff was really friendly, the good was great, and they were very nice to to the three year old with us. When the food arrived at our table, it didn't like there was all that much but it was so filling I didn't have dinner. I had a medium-heat tikka masala and it was very flavorful with just the right amount of heat. It really is an indian Pei Wei. Tasty, but definitely not authentic. The spice levels are pretty legit, which I appreciate. My favorite Indian dish is korma, which is typically a slightly sweet, nutty, creamy curry. The korma at Tarka is way too sweet, almost inedible. But the naan is pretty darn tasty. So, the food is pretty good, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here. read more

I've only ever eaten take-out here, and it's good. I was disappointed in the saag paneer (my favorite Indian dish) which lacks the creaminess and decadent flavor of those found in Indian restaurants across town (including Clay Pit!). The korma, however, was outstanding, and the coconut curry was also delicious. The meats (we tried both chicken and beef in the curries) are perfectly cooked - tender and flavorful, and the naan is exceptional. Samosas were also delicious. One order comes with two, which can easily be divided into 2-3 pieces each to share. Tarka is a great take-out joint for a quick Indian food fix. read more

I've never rated this place surprisingly. I used to get takeout here quite a bit. It was a good place for quick Indian fix. But the food quality has gone down - the sauces are just not flavorful. They have too many spices dumped in that haven't fully cooked through. The vindaloo tasted of undercooked onion paste. I understand using store bought spices but Indian food can not be cooked in a rush - the sauces need to be sautéed fully and then simmered. The quality has gone down with probably volume. It's sad because I was excited someone brought Indian to the quick service model but I doubt I'll be getting takeout here again. Decided to try this place out the other day as an attempt to satisfy our Indian food crave. We ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala and Chicken & Lamb Kabobs, along with a side of Garlic Naan. The first few bites in the chicken tikka masala were great (or maybe I was just hungry). However, as I adventured longer with the curry, I started to get really tired of the dish, almost to the point where I couldn't even finish it. The tikka masala seemed more like a tomato paste/marinara sauce, with absolutely no familiar exotic Indian spices. The chicken and lamb kabobs were good, but was a bit odd with the rice. It seemed like the meat was more of an appetizer and that the entree was missing an actual main course (maybe like a curry?). Lastly, my favorite part about Indian food - the Naan. At Tarka, they give you the option to upgrade to garlic naan for just 25 cents extra. I have to say, the way they describe this option on the menu seemed really promising: "coated with minced garlic, basil, and seasoning". However, I think I would had actually preferred the naan without the garlic coating. The garlic on the naan was rather distracting and clashed with the other Indian flavors. Overall, the food seemed to be "Americanized" Indian food and pretty average. Would not recommend for those looking for authentic Indian food.. read more

Love this quick way to eat Indians food. Good quality and fast. Love ordering it for pickup but it smells so good in there that it's hard to not pick it up and just stay there to eat it! The food is really good, sizable portions and its decently priced! Great for the family or for all occasions! I loved the ordering system, lines move fast you get a nice comfy seat and food is out in a decent amount of time. More about my experience: It was a fairly busy day and I was helped by a very handsome young gentleman (im single, he was cute, sue me!) who was really helpful and friendly and was a delightful changeup from some of the droning "whaddya wants" that you may get at some ordering stations around austin. Call me crazy but customer service is a big one in my book and he was very polite and professional and made the experience that much better! As it turns out he was also the one to deliver my dish (maybe he was feelin me too, ha!) He was again so professional and kind and made sure I had everything I needed. Do not order via the website! I never received an order confirmation despite my credit card being charged. I spoke with the manager who stated that this was a known issue, however, claimed that it was my fault the the order was not processed. When I questioned how a credit card charge does not qualify as a completed order they said that there was nothing they could do. Best case scenario would have been to comp my meal. An acceptable scenario would have been to offer to fast-track a new order since I placed my original order 20 minutes prior to this conversation. My boyfriend and I had dinner there last night. For health reasons, I eat gluten-free and dairy-free, and they were extremely understanding about it, helpful, and knowledgeable of the menu. We had vegetable pakoras for a starter, and they substituted a vegan chutney for us. Absolutely delicious! I had the coconut curry, and couldn't help but eat the whole thing. He had lamb biryani and brought a good portion home. It is wonderful food for the price, and if you don't forget how rice expands in your tummy like I did, you can probably get two meals out of what they serve you anyway. Tarka is great! Nice and creamy Indian food, and wonderful for vegetarians. I just love this food, and the atmosphere is nice. I go quiet often, and I recommend it highly. As an Indian (born and raised in the US), I would say Tarka is really good. The prices are pretty low and the quality is high. I don't think this is the place where you would take Indian parents, but it is a good place to expose people to Indian food/for take out. I would describe Tarka as an Indian-American fusion, which isn't really something I've seen before. I've tried the paneer and chicken, and their korma and tikka masala curries. I always get everything medium spicy, but honestly the medium spicy isn't spicy at all. Once my boyfriend got the next spicy level and neither of us thought it was spicy. read more

When they served the food, they served us a chicken tikka masala that my parents were trying to eat but felt as if something was wrong with their food.
