The food was so good! I didn't know they had a basement area that is a little more quaint with a lot more rap music. The bartender was my server, and he offered A+ service with a smile and liquor samples if you're not sure what you want. Had chicken wings, waffles, cheese grits and scrambled eggs. This spot is a vibe! It was within walking distance of my hotel in downtown Houston. We went at about 4:40 on a Friday when happy hour was taking place and let me tell you it was bomb! Music was on point with a live dj and the music had us dancing. Paige was our waiter and she was a good server with good suggestions on what to eat and drink. The food was very good! No complaints about the food, but we wanted to go there on a Saturday evening before a show, so we felt reservations were a must. Open table driven, but a non-refundable $50 "deposit" per person? Assumed this meant they keep deposit if we no show, and that wasn't going to happen, so okay. Four of us, $200 deposit. We check in and get a slip of paper with my name and $200 credit, ok. Have dinner, go to pay bill, $185. With tip will be over $200, so I pass the credit slip plus my credit card over. She says that since the bill is less than two hundred she has to round it up. What? It will be more after tip. No, tip doesn't count. What? Not happy, but not losing money either, order drinks to go, because we have a show to make. Drinks come with final receipt. Now bill is $259. Added drinks plus a 20% tip on a part of 4. Whole thing just felt like a scam, but I had to take it, or risk missing show. If you want to eat there, fine, I won't again, but do not give them a "deposit". read more

We had an expresso martini, a watermelon margarita, lavender margarita, taste breakfast, gumbo and chicken and waffles. Janae recommended the praline and peach cobbler waffles.. so we tried them both.. SO SO GOOD! The only downside of this experience was receiving a parking ticket. Tried this placed based on some local recommendations and I'm very glad I did. Came in on Saturday afternoon. We were seated upon arrival. We ordered the shrimp burger and the chicken dinner, lamb chops, sides: Mac, greens and yams. Everything was great and flavorful, but the yams were the star of the show. Our party of five arrived around 1:30pm, told it'd be 1hr 15min wait....we waited over 2hours. This is a very lively and busy restaurant located next to the train tracks in an area where there's a vibrant homeless population. Parking was conveniently located across the tracks for $15 unless you're lucky to find a meter to park. When we were finally seated the waiter was nice and accommodating. The food was very good and the drinks were as well. It was worth the wait! We started with calamari and buffalo sauce cauliflower wings, yummy! I had the breakfast with eggs, bacon, grits (VERY GOOD) and waffles w/ berries. Everyone in my party loved the food! It was my son's birthday so he received a slice of cake and a birthday song! I highly recommend for the food but be prepared for a long wait but was told it's better to try during the week so the wait isn't too crazy. I'm giving 4 out of five stars only because of the wait. By far the best food I had in Houston for the 5 days I was there. Like I needed some real food, veggies and all and this place was definitely a hit. Some of their food wasn't consistent though. We all ordered Mac and Cheese, mine came out good but the other 2 I was with had to send there's back because it needed a little more time in the oven. And Nae...perfect bartender/server. Talkative but not annoying. I asked her to make me something she likes making that wasn't on the menu and ended up with a perfect Passionfruit Mojito. The food here is amazing! Came with a large group and we all loved our meals. Amazing lobster, delicious grits and the waffles are so light and Fluffy. The staff were also extra accommodating to our group. Especially with my shrimp allergy, they personally cleaned the grill and grilled my lobster so it wouldn't cross contaminate with the shrimp. Came here for for dinner last night. I kept seeing it on TikTok when I was planning my visit to Houston. I must say IlI was surprised that it lived up to the hype. The food was really good! I got the Taste of Soul. The only minor complaint I had was the rice seemed a little salty but everything else was amazing. My sister had the chicken and waffles salad and it was huge! She said it was really good. They definitely don't skimp on the portions. For drinks I had the castaway and she had the watermelon henny. We both enjoyed those. We both got whiskey butter cake for dessert to go. Good, however, just note it's really sweet. Or waiter was super nice and attentive. I feel like it was a little loud in there but the music was good. Towards the end of our dinner they had live music. They sounded really good so I wish I got to hear more. Overall I thought the restaurant was great. However, I did have to pay a deposit (which goes towards your bill) when I made reservations. I didn't necessarily like that part but I live in Atlanta so maybe that's common in Houston. If I'm back in the city, I would definitely return. read more

I was dining alone and really wanted to just order to go. They wouldn't do to go order. And I ask if I ordered could I get a box when it came out. Bartender told me no, they didn't like to do that. I understand when I order to go it isn't the same fresh out of the kitchen. I was disappointed to have to sit alone and eat. Bartenders were not very attentive.
