I recently stopped by for the first time and ordered the shrimp and grits. The dish itself was decent overall, but the grits arrived at room temperature, which really took away from the experience. Hot, creamy grits make a big difference with this kind of plate, and these just didn't deliver on that. Service was another issue. I sat at the bar for about 10 minutes without anyone acknowledging me. I eventually had to call a bartender over just to place my order. To make things more frustrating, my food came out before my drink was even made. This was my first visit, and while the food had potential, the lukewarm grits and slow service left a poor impression. Honestly, I probably won't be back
Taste Bar + Kitchen definitely delivered! We ordered the fried okra, fried calamari, and the dirty rice topped with fried shrimp and catfish, and every dish was full of flavor. The fried okra was crispy, perfectly seasoned, and impossible to stop eating. The calamari was tender with a light, crunchy coating--not rubbery at all. The star of the meal was the dirty rice with fried shrimp and catfish. The dirty rice was rich, flavorful, and well-seasoned, while the shrimp and catfish were fried to golden perfection with a crispy outside and tender, flaky inside. The only downside to our visit was the wait to be seated. It took longer than expected before we were finally sat down, which was a little frustrating. Thankfully, once we were seated, the food made up for the wait. Overall, everything came out fresh, hot, and cooked just right. If you're looking for delicious Southern comfort food with generous portions and amazing flavor, Taste Bar + Kitchen is definitely worth the visit. I'll absolutely be back to try more from the menu!
Whenever I get a chance to visit Taste, I always leave satisfied. Last week, I went to Taste after 2-3 years. The service has improved tremendously since I last visited. The ambience is nice,clean and open atmosphere. I ordered the traditional Cajun fried chicken wings, collard greens, macaroni and cheese. The wings and collard greens were delicious! Even after all these years, I'm still not a fan of the mac and cheese. It's not as flavorful as the other dishes. For my drink, I ordered the sangria. Which was delicious and refreshing. If you're ever in the area, I highly recommend checking out Taste bar. I'll be on a mission to visit more often this year.
I went to Taste for happy hour after work and thoroughly enjoyed my visit. The server was personable and the food and drinks were great. I loved the Dusse watermelon frozen drink. I ordered spicy ranch wings, mac and cheese, collards, and fried mushrooms and all of it was super tasty and reminded me of home cooking. The restaurant was lively and had wonderful happy hour vibes. I highly recommend giving this place a try!!
Was in town for the weekend & I ended up coming here twice in one day because it was so good. So many options & both things I tried were delicious! For lunch I had a jerk chicken sandwich with a side of mac & cheese with was so cheesy, loved it! For dinner I forgot the name of it but it was chicken smothered in a sauce with yams & collard greens with a waffle biscuit with was also amazing! If I'm ever back in town I will be coming back here. Also the servers were very friendly & attentive, the place itself was very chill, good music playing.
This was recommended to us by a friend since we were visiting from MD and it lived up to the hype. I'm still mad my leftovers didn't make it on the flight with me. We made a reservation and that was absolutely necessary after seeing the wait upon arrival. We were seated immediately which was plus. The upstairs is a bit cramped but they made decent use of the space. The environment is very laid back but vibrant, music was rocking and it's VERY black in there which I love. Our server was Brian and he was the best. I was torn between the taste of soul and the catfish and grits and he was so patient and helpful with me as I mulled it over. We had: Garlic and Herb lamp chops - 10/10 - they were so moist and flavorful I have no notes. The order came with 4 so it was great to split. Calamari - 10/10 - no notes, the texture was perfect the portion size was perfect and the aioli was a great paring but they typically serve it with marina. I asked for a lemon on the side and they brought one grilled, I didn't ask for that but I was happy with the assumption. Catfish and grits - 10/10 - the portion on this plate was insane, INSANE. The grits? Please, put me in a room and give me some privacy because wow. The texture was so creamy and rich without overpowering the catfish. It got to a point in the meal where I was just eating it so I could taste it even though I was spreading like a peacock on the inside. The only thing I would change about this dish is the amount of Cajun cream as it was a bit heavy handed for my taste. I skimmed some off the top and that worked for me. Peach cobbler waffle - did not taste but my friend said they were good. Candied yams - 10/10 - I typically hate yams, it's something about the taste that's artificial to me but these were amazing. The texture, the hint of cinnamon spice were so good I had seconds. Greens - 5/10 - my least favorite thing. They were so salty I couldn't finish my bite. After my friend mentioned us being there for my birthday Brian brought out this cute slice of cake and sparkler before he started hooting and hollering and I enjoyed that haha. Thanks for making our service enjoyable Brian, we will be back.
Yelp family, you didn't fail me!!! We decided to have brunch here based on reviews and went ahead and made a reservation (make the reservation, you'll thank me later) for brunch on Sunday. We walked in and was seated quickly. Brian was our server. Brian got us started on waters while we looked at the menu, we ended up ordered calamari and wings (jerk/orange pepper) but was told that they were out of calamari and decided on the cauliflower with general tao's sauce. I got the Nearest Peach drink with whipped cream on top and order the Taste of Soul but opted for oxtails. The appetizers started the meal off right. The cauliflower was a great highlight as everyone enjoyed it (someone even mentioned ordering another one and even ordering to take home with them), the jerk chicken was good although the jerk was a little on the drier side than the orange pepper was. However you know food is good when you don't have to add anything to it (salt, pepper, hot sauce) and that's what was given to me. The greens had nice heat to them, the yams were sweet and delicious, the oxtail still had a little too much fat on them for me, but it didn't stop me from getting into them. The cornbread waffle was a nice little addition. The rice with the gravy was a nice bite. Seriously, I just sat there and smiled because this plate of food didn't disappoint. If you like liquor, you'll like this drink. Seriously, there's nothing that has me questioning if I would come back and try it again. My sister has the blackened catfish and grits which she enjoyed, my friend had the fried catfish and grits which she said the cream sauce made the dish . . . No complaints from us. The place gets busy so I highly recommend making that reservation. It has a busy, lively vibe and when you walk in, do get intimidated by the size as there's a whole upstairs section. And the service Brian provided was TOP NOTCH!!! He made sure that when we walked out, we were satisfied. GO!!! Thank me later.
Food was fresh, seasoned perfectly, and came out quick. Not a single miss. Our server was AMAZING. Super detailed, gave her favorites, and even helped us adjust our order for pre race. Honorable mention to the R&B playlist... 10 out of 10, no skips. We might have to spin the block instead of trying somewhere new in Houston

If you're an oxtail lover, do yourself a favor and order them. The oxtails were absolutely incredible--fall-off-the-bone tender, rich, flavorful, and smothered in a savory gravy that had me wanting to lick the plate clean. Every bite was perfectly seasoned and cooked to perfection. The sides complemented the meal beautifully, and the entire plate was comfort food at its finest. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is because the service was pretty slow, and the music was a bit too loud for my taste. It made it difficult to carry on a conversation at times. That said, the food--especially those oxtails--was worth the wait. I'll definitely be back when I'm craving some of the best oxtails I've had in a long time.
The flavor of the food was great, however the temperature wasn't. I ordered the lamb chop meal with greens and mac. The sides were great, but the lamb chops were way overcooked. I asked for med, and they came out well done. We also got the wing meal, and the wings came out lukewarm like they had been sitting for a long time. However, the waiter was super nice, and tried to help us. They rectified the issues, but overall it was a little disappointing to have that experience.
The food and service was excellent. Lots of breakfast, brunch and dinner options. Cindy was knowledgeable about menu and made great recommendations.
I haven't actually got to dine in at the new location but did place a to go order for the catfish and grits. I was craving a really good catfish and grits with a cream sauce and this definitely exceeded my expectation. I would like to give them a try dining in, but I saw they require a $50 deposit per person which is a little excessive so I'll just continue to order to go for now. The sauce was flavorful I do wish the catfish was fried a little hard, but that wasn't an option when you ordered to go. I definitely recommend trying this based on my experience for to go. I hope to make my way in one day to see what the ambience and service is like.

This place is it! It's busy, so be prepared to wait 45-60 mins if you go on the weekend. I believe you can make reservations. We didn't but it worked out fine. It's definitely a brunch vibe (but family--teen friendly) spot. I'd say family friendly but they do play rap music with explicit lyrics so it's not a little kid restaurant. But it is a come with your crew or person spot. Service was EXCELLENT! Their servers have an apparent ebb and flow. They work together. They're knowledgeable about the menu and just were good people. Let's get to the food. DELICIOUS! On point! I ordered a basic breakfast but nothing was basic about it. I ordered the Cinnamon Toast Crunch waffles, bacon, cheesy eggs and country style potatoes. All was yummy. The potatoes were really good (a little too salty but the flavor was still good). Everyone rise mostly has something with catfish and all reported they loved it. Nice chill spot.... I made reservations Saturday afternoon for later that evening and luckily got in. The wait wasn't long either, waited 10 mins and then our table was ready. The place is small, making for a very intimate atmosphere. They have plenty of outdoor seating along with hookahs available. They have valet as well as security/officer on stand by. Upstairs is a stage for performance's their music was good. The atmosphere is definitely a great one to start off a girls night out. Which is what we were doing. The drinks are how I like my men good, sweet, and strong af! loved the cotton candy drink as well as my taste of soul plate. I will definitely be returning. read more

First Experience and it was nice. The Gentleman at the door very respectful and Generous they open the door for you, like "HELLO" Yes thank you! We need more places like this. Location of the restaurant was downtown Houston, the restaurant had a vibe once u walked in music was on Point, They have upstairs and downstairs seating, waiting wasn't long give or take 20-30 mins. Once we got seated things were rolling in, food came out looking Delicious and yummy. I will say this, if u order some Smothered Oxtails they should definitely have some gravy to them but overall my first time experiencing this restaurant I'll say it wasn't Bad. We wish we would have visited this restaurant sooner in our trip. Paige was our server and she was great. She had so many good things to say I thought she was related to the owner of the restaurant. The food was so good. The grits had the perfect consistency the fried fish on top was fried hard so it didn't become soggy by the gravy. The pancakes were soft,fluffy and perfect with any topping. The lobster however was fried to long so it was a little dry but flavorful. The lamb chops were a BIG hit and a favorite for many. Went here for my birthday and I loved it! I ordered the Taste of Soul. It had smothered chicken, collard greens, candied yams, rice and gravy, and biscuit waffle with a side of smoked Gouda mac and cheese. The food was super fresh and hot. Our waiter was very nice and even took a shot with us for my birthday. They did not have any COVID-19 precautions, but the restaurant was really clean and the tables were far enough apart to have privacy. They also had many drink options, I love a lemon drop and they had one with oranges. I will always go to Taste Kitchen & Bar whenever I go back to Texas. read more

Great drinking spot. The apple pie martini is perfect. Service was a bit slow though. For our appetizer, we ordered the Cajun fries. This dish was underwhelming, as more fries come in a medium McDonald's fry order. Although the portion was small, the dish was good. We got the Nashville Chicken and Waffles as our entree with a side of Gouda Mac n cheese (it was a small bowl for the most part). These dishes were well made and it was very filling. If the service was faster and the portions were bigger (mainly the appetizer of fries), this place would be closer to 5 stars. Be sure you check it out at night, the vibe is great! read more

This was the TikTok hook up lol! I saw Darius Cooks review this place and on a recent visit to Houston decided to try it. I was not disappointed. I went on a Friday mid-day and had no wait at all! I loved the vibe (plus the music wasn't over powering). Our waitress was super nice and answered all of our questions. I wasn't in love with the first drink I ordered(my own preference) and they quickly replaced it , no problem. Large portions and everything was so delicious. The only thing I didn't like was the cornbread waffle, it was very dense. I didn't count that against them because my friend ate two so maybe it's just my taste read more

Went on a Saturday to grab some brunch for my mom's bday. We were immediately seat at a table and all of the staff we encountered were polite and helpful. Our server was dope and gave helpful honest feedback on menu items. The food was delicious but the red velvet waffle was my least favorite. The cake was a surprise from our awesome server and my mom said it was tasty, I was too full to try any. Only reason I didnt give it 5 stars was the music being too loud. There are not enough stars to do this restaurant justice. I came to Houston for my birthday.. which is all of February lol! The last time which was the first Time... My friends took Me here I ordered chicken and waffles (amazing), but had a bite of their jerk lamb chops... I have not gotten over that bite since !!! Needless to say... the food is super flavorful! I didn't even have any food to take home. I recommend the tropical mimosa. I love blue drinks and this one was so yummy and sweet. Our server definitely went above and beyond with the accommodations. I would NOT recommend visiting this restaurant without a reservation. We were told the wait would be 30-40 minutes for the bar area but ended up waiting for over 2 hours. Despite the long wait time the food was delicious! We ordered the jerk chicken wings for an appetizer and they were perfect. The flavor was perfect. For a drink I ordered We are the culture which was perfect for the hot weather. The drink was refreshing and contained a generous amount of alcohol. Now for the main course I ordered the smothered chicken with rice gravy with sides of corn and collard greens. I was very pleased with my meal. Each food item was well seasoned and I had more than enough to take home. Our waitress was sweet and apologized for the long wait. There is a percentage charge for using a card which is odd because most people don't carry cash. I would recommend bringing cash. Keep in mind free parking is not available but there are paid parking lots nearby. Chicken and waffles here are BOMB!!! I LOOOVEE savory so I got one cornbread waffle (highly recommend) and one biscuit waffle (idk if it was a miss bit it was SUPER hard - I do not recommend) Also it's so neat you can order white or dark meat for your chicken whhaaattt! The host who helped us was SOO kind and patient !!! Especially since I changed my mind a billion times lol. Eventually I decided to sit outside since the weather wasn't trying to actively kill us.. and inside was a little doom and gloom. The drinks are all a hit too. Definitely check the busy hours and get lab in advance - I ventured to this spot mid day on a Monday and still ran into a wait time if an hour. Ended up being seated at the bar upstairs which was a nice ambience for drink making in the bar center it definitely gave us attention and service that was to be expected. We had an hour wait, but the experience was amazing! Our server was AMAZING! She was so helpful, attentive, and overall amazing. A heads up (they automatically add gratuity to their bills). I ordered the popular lavender colored drink (it was good but not something I'd order or recommend to try at first thought) and the jerk lamb chops and Mac & cheese. And y'all it was soooooo good! Them lamb chops had a bit to it but it was so delicious and tender! I drank most of my husbands watermelon drink which was reallllyyyy good! Nevertheless the drinks were hitting! The Mac n cheese was good! But the price was a bit OD for the portion and taste. Ultimately, I would come back here again and would recommend people stop by here and give them a try. read more

They would have received 5 stars if I didn't have to wait for 2.5 hours for brunch. But..... it was so worth the wait (with a couple carafes of mimosas). The carafes are $25, they use a whole bottle of champagne and you have 4 or 5 flavors to choose from. The main event is the chicken and waffles. They have 5 types of chicken and waffles ( including lobster tail and waffles) and they are all delicious. I had the General Tso but they also have Nashville Hot and Jerk chicken. The waffles were soft, pillowy, delicious and you can add a variety of toppings like cinnamon toast crunch. Both the chicken and the waffles were equally great and the hardest part of chicken and waffles is getting them both right which Taste did masterfully. I also ordered a side of mac and cheese which was also pretty good. I appreciated that the owner or manager walked around with free glasses of mimosas due to the wait. That was a decent way to offset the inconvenience of the wait. read more
I wish Ubereats had a plane or another location could open in DC. I had brunch here with my family while home for the weekend. I'm still dreaming about the catfish and grits and the jerk lamp chops. Chefs kiss! Pro: The food was incredible. Con: There was an hour wait to be seated but it was definitely worth it. We were able to sit on the patio and catch up and grabbed drinks from the outside bar while we waited. Service was great and timely. No mistakes or complaints on any of our orders which was surprising for a large party of 8. I can't wait to visit again when I'm in town. We were here on a Friday night, and our wait time was about an hour. I think some of us wanted to give up, but we were determined to see it through. We're glad we did because the food is phenomenal. I had the pecan praline waffles and fried chicken. It was everything I expected and more. My friend had the red velvet waffles and loaded fries. She practically licked the plate clean all while doing a happy dance in her seat. We also had the lobster smoked gouda mac & cheese because of the great reviews, and it did not disappoint. We had the lavender blueberry margarita and B.O.L.D martini which were also fabulous. read more

Yes! They have a vegan chicken (fried cauliflower) and waffles with gluten free waffles. I believe there were one or two more gf options but that was the one that I specifically remember :)

Yes they have music playing. Yes, there is a brunch menu that you order from. There are combos that you can mix and match and you can also add things individually. The dinner menu doesn't come out until after brunch. Hope this helps!
