My husband suggested Tasty Dumpling somewhat spontaneously as we searched for a quick spot to obtain food that we could enjoy at nearby Columbus Park. Looking at small line of customers inside, I was skeptical of its quality and speediness of service. I should have listened to my gut. The boiled pork and chive dumplings (10 for $5.50) were some of the worst I've had in NYC. The skin was thick, and the meat was nearly all tough and/or fatty meat. Although a thicker skin, more characteristic of northern-styled dumplings, is acceptable if the quality of the dough and filling are good, both were crude here. I also ordered a pancake with cabbage and beef ($3.50). The filling, like the dumplings, was nearly all fat and/or tough tendon-like meat. At least the meat mixture's seasoning was more flavorful and the texture of the pancake had an appealing crispiness, overall it was hard to swallow all the fat--and the knowledge of unthinkably high calories and cholesterol. The fact that there wasn't a single Chinese person I could detect in the restaurant should have been a warning sign of its reputation for authenticity and patronage amongst locals. Y'all, I might have made a grave miscalculation. I ordered a beef noodle soup from a shop called "Tasty Dumpling." My soup broth was flavorless, the beef was tough (to the extent that I gave up chewing through several gristly pieces), and the noodles were forgettable. I did, however, see many other customers get to-go containers full of hearty-looking fried dumplings and suffered extreme food envy. So, hopefully your experience will be better by avoiding my past mistakes. They also have a bunch of basic noodle dishes and sides, including my favorites cold sesame noodles and scallion pancakes. Everything I had was very good--flavorful, fresh, and on point. The prices are good for Manhattan, but keep in mind that this place is really no frills. The dumplings, when paired with their complimentary chili oil, was so good! Flavors erupting in your mouth and the slight spicyness from the oil was perfect. Extra points with vinegar! The beef noodle soup was also good! It's definitely not the best I've ever had, as I found the soup to lack the richness that I had hoped for, but that's alright! The value for the food was so good, there were no complaints from me. It was about 6 dollars for the dumplings (10 of them!) and another 7 for the noodles... and we were stuffed! The reason why I gave four stars though is because of the cleanliness of the place. Yes, there was fast service. Yes, the food was decent. But our table was obviously not cleaned and the bottles with the vinegar and spicy sauce were oily... not OK in my books. There was a sauce mix by the pickup station which I drizzled on top of the dumplings. I personally prefer dumplings with thinner wrapper, so I wasn't too amused. However, it was pretty delicious.
