Scrambled egg with tomato lunch special
    Jacquelin S.

My neighbor suggested trying Tasty Palace several months ago. I said that the only thing on the menu that I might be able to eat was the Hot Pot. She said that's a dish for winter, not for summer. So, it's now winter and we finally were in the right season for Hot Pot, so time to try out the restaurant. Funny thing, turns out I didn't order Hot Pot. The restaurant was mostly empty when we arrived on a Wednesday a little after noon. Three tables had customers. There were plenty of tables for four. We were seated quickly. I decided to try the Scrambled Egg with Tomato from the Lunch Special section of the menu. Our food came relatively quickly. My dish was very tasty and a generous portion. The restaurant has a large patio. I'm guessing one can dine there in warmer weather.

Came here for the first time. Ordered: Xiao long bao (soup dumplings), Mongolian beef, sweet and sour chicken, and fried rice. It tasted authentic and was really good. The server also gave us complimentary tea. I'm definitely going to come back. We ate all the food there

Best malatang place ever!!! When I first got there, I was skeptical about trying it, but when I tasted the malatang, I was amazed! It tastes super authentic and all the options are customizable! The staff are super friendly if you have any dietary restrictions as well and they accommodate well! It's so good I typically go 1-2 every two weeks and look forward to eating there! They have indoor and outdoor seating (patio covered) and are very dog friendly! I would definitely recommend checking this place out!!! So far everything has been amazing

There's quite a lot of Chinese restaurant options in Davis and I've come here a couple times. I would recommend to try the hunan fried chicken, boiled spicy fish, custom pot, and dry tofu skin with green pepper. I always try the more "unique" dishes that are not commonly seen in Cantonese style restaurants. Mongolian chicken wasn't the best. Service is fast, ordering takeout online is quick and easy. Prices are on the higher side compared to some other options in town.

Fast and kind service. Food was good if you are familiar with Northern style Chinese food. Tender meats and stir fries. I would not recommend the buns if you are here; get something else instead. The dough is fine enough, but filling is lackluster. Not a cheap place, but nice and spicy and good for about 3-4 people to split. Will be coming back, if it was cheaper (although bigger portions so fair enough value) would have been 5 stars.

Stopped by on the way back to San Francisco from Tahoe. It was much needed after a weekend of snowboarding, booze, and not eating enough nutrition in Tahoe. Scarfed my face with a bowl of malatang - you need to order AT LEAST 7 things in your bowl. It was healing and delicious!! Could see why this spot could be a hit in a college town. Perfect for your hangovers or if you need a warm bowl of soup. The inside has handful of seats and there is tons of street parking available. Would recommend if you're in area and need something!

My all time chinese restaurant in Davis! Love their spicy pot :) they recently added bbq menus and it's a must try

Really yummy food and quick service! We ordered the vegetable fried noodles, chicken and broccoli, and sweet and sour shrimp and everything was delicious! Definitely would come back.

We have been seeing Tasty Palace open for a while and we're super excited to finally have a chance to go for dinner. We were greeted and seated immediately, and though the restaurant got busier throughout our time there, the staff did a wonderful job of maintaining the flow of orders and guests. We were incredibly impressed by the food. B dishes had perfectly cooked vegetables, still with a slight crunch, in super flavorful sauces and they served really good amounts of food for each plate. They also have a super cute outdoor seating area, so the restaurant has plenty of space, and would work well for larger groups! The food was on the pricier side of casual cuisine, so it will not be in our budget to regularly visit, but it is absolutely somewhere I will recommend to friends and family in the near future!

    Spicy hot pot - medium

I love the spicy hotpot from tasty palace. I crave malatang every once in a while & their hotpot always hits the spot. I ordered medium spicy with 3x beef, enoki mushroom, plain noodles, bean sprouts, and bokchoy. I always double or triple on the meat because I find one order to not be enough. I also always get their sesame & spicy sauce to mix together to dip all the goods in. I added a side of rice today because twas cravin the grains. They ran out of plain noodles so they subbed ramen noodles AND udon noodles (free of charge) for it. I love their service- very accommodating, not so intrusive, and kind. The inside of the restaurant was empty around 12pm today, but usually it's pretty full. I love how clean the place is and appreciated the peace and quiet today. Would definitely recommend this place and they have lots of authentic-looking chinese dishes too that I have yet to try. PSA: they also have wifi!! Overall very solid, especially on a rainy, cold day. Tasty palace has my heart.

This review is for the hot pot. It's not a hot pot like what you find at Uniboil or Tasty Pot, which is an individualized steaming hot pot experience. Instead the hot pot comes out as a soup. I am still confused as to how this is a hot pot. You customize what goes into your soup and need a minimum of 7 items. For the base, I got spicy soup (mild). The spice level is on the spicier side, so mild tasted more like a typical medium. The spicy base is chili oil heavy but I did enjoy it. The soup-based hot pots also come with your choice of either Udon or plain noodles (this is not the case for the dry hot pot). Hot pot - spicy pot (mild) (soup base $3) - beef ($2.95) - Lamb ($2.95) - Fish tofu ($2.45) - Fish ball ($2.45) - Corn ($1.95) - Cabbage ($1.95) - Fine vermicelli ($1.95) =$19.65 Overall, the price for hot pot is more on the expensive side (especially if you choose more protein items). I would recommend 2 selections of protein to have a serving similar to Tasty Pot or Uniboil's meat portion. I also REALLY liked how they cooked the corn but was upset that you only get two small pieces of cut up corn cob (like half of that sliced corn cob piece you'd get at any other hot pot). And is it really a hot pot, or just a cooked soup?

Mapo Tofu + side of rice + tea
    Dan F.

The frog legs were cooked perfectly and were the perfect topping (for me) for this dish. The combination of fresh thai chili and dried chili made for great spice/heat level. The noodle was cooked on the softer side for my liking, but at the end of the day, this meal still satisfied my craving! The service was very quick. We didn't get a good feel for the ambience since we arrived right when they opened. We sat outside as it was a nice day and had a decent time.

You know that after glow feeling you get after a delicious meal? That's what I experienced here at Tasty Palace. We have a variety of Chinese food places in Davis, but this place offers custom hot pots, some dim sum options, milk tea, and Sichuan stir fry all in one! They also offer karaoke room rentals, which I hope to review soon! We got the mapo tofu, braised lamb with green onion, passionfruit tea, and two sides of rice. The braised lamb is a MUST if you visit here. The meat was slightly smoky and onions were very well caramelized. The mapo tofu was good, but nothing to cry home about. The lamb was really the star of the show. The passiofruit tea was a perfect mix of sweet and sour! I got mine sweetened (you can order unsweetened) and it was just right for me. Very refreshing and helped cut the fattiness of the lamb well. We'll definitely be back again to try more dishes! Especially now since Hometown and Chengdu Style closed down, it's nice to have another authentic Chinese restaurant in town.

Wow! Ascended to my #1 restaurant spot in Davis. Definitely more of an infrequent meal since I…read morewould consider it more on the expensive side. Average dishes are ~20 dollars. Great spicy food and friendly staff. Food (10/10) - The food here is AMAZING! Perfect balance of spice to flavor and every single bite is electric. The sichuan numbing pepper in the Chongqing soup was DELICIOUS. Mix it with some of the white rice and you have a dish all by iteself. The chicken itself had a nice chew and was very fragrant. Loved the texture and flaovr of the vermicelli; nice bounce to the noodles while soaking in all the spicy soup. My one complaint would be that they have soft bones (sign of long boiling time) so be careful of that! Also got the spicy stir-fried pork kidney... don't diss it 'til you try it. Super good, with that nice bit of chew. Take a bite of pepper, kidney, and white rice and BOOM! Perfect bite. **Recommendation: Rice is a key component for the dishes here. Without rice, everything will be too spicy, too savory, and overall too overwhelming. The rice is the thing that helps tie everything together (as it frequently is) Service (8/10) - Good service; nothing notable. Nice people and I think most of them speak Mandarin. Service and seating was also fast. Order of things to come out of the kitchen was a bit strange: soup for the chicken, rice, stir-fry, chicken. Honestly, not that big of a problem but just decided to comment. Price (8/10) - The price here is a bit on the pricier side; $54 for 2 but there were some leftovers (had to make my own rice though). Some of the dishes are more worth than others. The Chonqing chicken was $25 but you got a large bowl of chicken with soup and vermicelli. On the other hand, the stir-fry for $20 was notably padded with vegetables and I would say a majority of the dish was not the kidney. At the very least, the taste of the food compensates. However, this place is likely not a college go-to. Overall, great restaurant that I will be coming back to again (maybe with my parents LOL) or at the very least, would come with a large group as it is more fitting for family style. Highly recommend!

When we left Davis and came back, we were really sad that there were no more Taiwanese food options, because we both loved the pork chop and meat gravy over rice so much. That being said, when we realized, honey D was there, we figured we would try it. The store itself is quite small, think fast service Boba shop size. The decoration is fine, the place kept pretty clean, not much more to say about it. The service is also really good, the staff working was very polite and friendly, and it turns out the owner must've been in the shop because she delivered our food and asked us if we've ever eaten this food before and offered to help. We ordered the fried chicken with pork gravy over rice, the beef noodle soup, and the lemon tea. To be honest, the beef noodle soup is not my favorite. Although the meat looks like it was freshly cut, I found it to be quite tough. I also was not really a fan of the bra, but I know the broth is also up to personal taste. For myself personally, I think the one at Dah Bao is better, and I've had much better in the Bay Area and outside of the bay. That being said, we both really enjoyed the chicken and rice. It was such a nostalgic taste, and we felt like the serving size was great. The chicken itself was really crunchy, so I imagine their other fried chicken and popcorn chicken options are also delicious. The tea was also very refreshing and helped to wash the food down. We plan to come back and try more of their braised meat and rice dishes, despite being a little disappointed by the beef noodle soup.

I really like their tofu pudding desserts. They're not overly sweet and come with a good variety of toppings, including boba. There seemed to be only one person working the counter during my visit. She was taking orders, making drinks, and bringing out the food. Our drinks took a while, but the wait for the food wasn't too bad. We ordered things that we usually get at home although we made one mistake, meant to get Kung pao chicken and instead ordered cashew chicken. Rest of order was sesame balls, potstickers, chicken chow fun and sweet-and-sour pork. The winner seemed to be sesame balls, which we'd rate between four and 4 1/2 on a 5 scale, potstickers were between a three and a four, same thing with the sweet-and-sour pork with one person commenting was too much breading on it. The chicken Chow fun the noodles were a bit gluey they stuck together, but there was a decent amount of chicken. Potstickers were OK but a little bit on the small side. As for the other food, my kids love the wontons and pot stickers. The fried rice is great, I feel like they add more egg than usual and I'm down for that. Their other soups are great too, but it's no beef noodle soup.

I wasn't prepared for the chilly day in Davis. I changed my outfit several times before we left the…read morehouse. The weather report said 65 degrees and overcast today. I went from a thin top to a medium weight sweater. We arrived in Davis I grabbed my jacket to pair with my sweater. Today was a day spent exploring Davis to see the California Conference for the Advancement of Ceramic Arts (CCACA). What a great Conference. We come each year for this Conference and explore Davis every time we are here. After exploring the first building of the show it was coming on time to eat. We looked around the current shopping center and my husband didn't see anything he was craving. He said we'll go more into town and look for a noodle place. He said he remembered one from our last visit, down one of the alleys. Walking up the street we saw a couple of advertisements. A sandwich board was on the sidewalk for Davis Noodle CIty, the exact place we were looking for. The little Noodle Shop in the alley. We weaved through the other businesses, past the dumpling restaurant, past the outdoor seating and to the front door of the Davis Noodle City Restaurant. The out door seating looked really welcoming, but it was chilly out so we opted for eating inside with the other table that was occupied. There were 3 parties eating outside when we arrived. When we walked inside we were greeted and told to take any table. We choose a table in the corner. The menus were under the glass table top, keeping it clean and easy to read. Each place setting had its own copy of the menu. After looking at the menu, remembering what was offered on the sandwich board in front, and cross referencing it with Yelp Reviews we started ordering. We opted for the Five Spice Beef Noodles, and I asked if that was a good option and she said it was their top seller. The Yelp Reviews were only ok for that dish, but I took our chances. The second dish we ordered was the Dan Dan Noodles She tried to upscale us to the one with vegetables, but that dish was a cold dish so we when for the standard Dan Dan Noodles. Both dishes came out quickly. The Dan Dan noodles were not spicy as I anticipated, which was good, I wasn't really looking for spicy. I liked the flavor and realized that if you mixed it up there is a sauce on the bottom that is really tasty. Dan Dan Noodles ($8.25 a steal) is a solid dish and I highly reccomend it. It's a great bowlful of noodles. If you are hopping for other ingredients you are out of luck, it's 100% noodles with a sprinkling of peanuts on top and a sauce on the bottom. The Five Spice Beef Noodle Soup ($12.75)was as described in the reviews. It comes with American Broccoli and carrots. The beef is so good it melts in your mouth. The broth is minimal and lacked flavor. I'd think that it's advertised as Five Spice that it would have more flavor. I don't reccomend it if you are looking for a strong flavor. If you are looking for great meat, that melts in your mouth, but is also a little fatty then you have the perfect dish. Both dishes came with fresh noodles, none of those dried and rehydrated noodles that some places serve. The noodles on both dishes were different and pleasant. I highly reccomend their fresh noodles. Customer service was good. She came to check up on us and was pleasant. Parking is street parking. And they have a bathroom on site that is clean and well stocked.
