My wife and I have been here on 2 occasions so far. She has a gluten allergy and we had heard that they have a good selection of gluten free options so we decided to give them a try. On the first trip, we arrived without reservations and were seated immediately at a table in the bar area. We were greeted with a bottle of water and a plate of chips and dip that were great. The owner came over and introduced himself to us and gave us the run down on tapias since we had never had them before. The gluten free options are clearly marked on the menu and there were a decent number of them available. When we mentioned that my wife has gluten allergies to the owner, he told us that they have a separate section in the kitchen for the gluten free meals and that included a separate fryer so she could get fried foods. After chatting with the owner, about our options, I mentioned that I really like spicy foods so he suggested the poppers, but when I told him that my wife does not like spicy, he said that he has some pull with the chef (it is his wife), so he brought us a special order of poppers that mixed the spicy and non spicy for us. We ordered 2 additional tapas and we were surprised that after the 3 smaller plates, we were both full. I thought that the potato stuffing of steak roulade could have used a bit more salt, but overall everything was great. On our second trip, we did not have reservations again, and again we got right in. The wait staff was very friendly and attentive. We tried some different dishes including one of the specials (a stuffed cucumber) and as before, everything was very tasty. I like the idea that you do not have to order everything that you think you want at once. We ordered 2 plates initially, and after finishing them, we ordered another. We sat for a bit talking and then ordered one more. At no point did we feel rushed to turn the table. Each plate runs from around $6 to 16, so it is possible to get a few without breaking the bank. My husband, cousin and I had just spent a long afternoon at a family picnic and needed to escape for a private evening away from the madding crowd. When we passed a sign that said "Tapas" in Laconia, NH, we were sure we had entered the Twilight Zone. Ray, the owner (who moved from Boulder a few months ago) was sorry he couldn't accommodate us without a reservation... But then somehow, 3 places opened up at the bar. In this amazing renovated 1781 tavern we were served a bottle of Malbec, a phenomenal spicy cucumber stuffed with lobster, 4 duck confit rolls, a delish mushroom and garlic dish and a plate of fried chickpea sticks with ketchup and spicy mayo. Perfect meal! And perfect evening. There was also a young man noodling at a baby grand piano... Quiet and unobtrusive. The restaurant, however, is making a big splash. Rush there at once! read more

We had a variety of food items and several drinks. The special Shrimp pizza they have on the menu was amazing. It has a very spicy pesto based sauce on it so try this only if you like spicy food. The variety of items was great and I really want to go back and try some more. The one thing that we didn't love was the French Onion soup. The soup here didn't have that rich natural beef taste. Not bad really, but I wouldn't order it again. Generally the best onion soup is found at places that sell a lot of prime rib so we should have known better. read more

We took a chance on this out of the way place while staying in Sanbornton for the weekend, and walked away very pleased with our experience. The warm, inviting interior makes you feel comfortable right from the beginning. The owner sat us personally, giving us a brief intro to the place and starting us off with complimentary sweet potato chips and a pumpkin/bean dip, which was really amazing. It just got better from there, our waitress was friendly and attentive, we got the tapas which were generous and clearly of a high caliber, and we left with a wonderful memory and a delicious flourless chocolate torte to enjoy later. Had a great meal with my wife, the food was fantastic in a beautiful little farmhouse. The service was great at first however as the evening progressed things went a bit downhill, our server would disappear for extended periods. After waiting for 20 minutes for drink refills and our last tapas dish we were a little angry. The owner told us that one of his servers didn't show up for work so they were short handed. The owner did try to make things right, he gave us a free dessert and took $15.00 off our check. If I'm ever in the area again I would most definitely come back, the food was really very good at a very reasonable price. read more

When a restaurant is just more then a restaurant it becomes something special. Besides the fresh and delicious food we love the people and the whole experience Tavern 27 has to offer. We went again on Saturday the 13th to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries and everyone had a great time from my 87 year old grandmother to the 12-7 year old kids. Although they were short staffed that night they more then made up for it with their attentiveness and the most awesome desert platter at the end for everyone to celebrate with. I had never had tapas before visiting this place, and I wish I had before because now I have been spoiled. I had the stuffed dates and an espresso when I most recently went. The dates were unique and rich adventures of flavor, and I have never had anything like them since. The espresso was good for the US but overall average. Before I went with a friend and we had their pizzas. I cannot recommend the pizza enough. It isn't like an American pizza at all, but closer to the Italian style. The ingredients on the pizza are what make it, rather than simply piling on cheese and tomato sauce to make the dish sit like a ball of lead in your stomach. The prices were standard for an upper-level place, but the atmosphere is worth every penny, and I don't usually feel that way. Never have I been in a more relaxed restaurant environment and with such quality creations. read more

I have a family of 6 who all eat a gluten free diet. Usually, this presents a real challenge when we find ourselves traveling "off the beaten path". Yesterday, we were in the lakes region of New Hampshire, in an area devoid of the chains we typically rely upon. Anyhow, searching "gluten free" on google map on my blackberry offered Tavern 27 as the option. So we decided to try it. Wow, the number GF options were tremendous. The food was incredibly good and reasonably priced. Some of the options were not to the liking of young palettes, but there were solid options for them. The bottom line is it's too bad they are 115 miles from my home because we'd be frequent visitors. All GF diners traveling to NH lakes region should give the place a try. read more

We especially loved the tapas style dining and the variety of food they have. Very cosy and welcoming restaurant, warm ambience. The bar is excellent, we had the sangria and it was a winner. The tapas concept is fun, you get to try lots of bites of interesting tasty little things, there are usually around four or so to a portion so it is good to share. The first time we were here not all of the dishes were that good, but lately they have gotten to be more consistent and better on the whole. My fiancé and I decided to get away from our fast paced jobs and escape up to Laconia NH for Valentines Day weekend. I was impressed with the reviews on Yelp and decided to make reservations (Valentines Day). We walked in with a kind gentleman, later to find out he was our piano player/singer for the evening :). He was very good, playing at a soft caliber in the background. While entering, we were greeted by enthusiastic staff, which included the owner. It was very quant, romantic, homey, rustic, and cozy place. We loved it! The staff were all amazing. Very good people who take pride in their work. Only made for a more enjoyable experience. You start out with complimentary bean dip with sweat potato chips. simply amazing...plenty of your favorite New Hampshire and Vermont brews (IPA, pale ale's, etc), and great mixed drinks (fiancé loved her martini). The food is basically mini-entrees, which we thought was a great idea. We had the medium thinly sliced sirloin strips on a large toothpick and absolutely loved it. We also had a spicy shrimp dish and really enjoyed that as well. Lastly, and best of all, we had duck dumplings. I've had duck once before and was never a fan, but wanted to give it one more try (fiancé eager to try it for the first time). It was served 2 portions in two types, boiled and pan fried, allowing each of us to have our own. Both versions were great, but I loved the pan fried even more. The duck was very good too, which is why this unique dish became my favorite. It's about $12 per app, which includes several serving size portions for each person (perfect for couples). Tavern 27 is a must for anyone looking to try a wide variation of unique, creative, and delicious mini-entree's, while relaxing to wonderful music, enjoying local brews, around the company of good people. When my local Laconia (from Boston but with a lake house in Laconia) friends said we were going to a tapas place for dinner, I was a bit skeptical. The expectations were set with places like Toro and Little Donkey in Boston/Cambridge. To say I was pleasantly surprised would be an understatement. The food was fantastic, cocktails were tasty, and atmosphere very cozy. Many of the ingredients are organic and locally sourced. Everything was made from scratch. They also spaced the courses nicely. This place is amazing, we kept driving thought it was far, but I'm so glad we didn't turn around. It's s old house converted into a restaurant. We ordered clam chowder, ohhhh I am a big critic on good clam chowder and this was now the best I have ever had. I had the power house salad was very good. In a nice, quaint refurbished home - we loved almost everything about this place. Fun piano music, friendly host and lots of unique dishes! The Chicken Cordon Bleu was amazing and we heard from other guests at our Bed and Breakfast that the bread pudding was the best they had ever had. The beef kale soup was outstanding too! This was our favorite food from the restaurants we tried in the area but we were disappointed by two things however. 1. Our server was not personable or attentive. 2. The carintas was not spicy (the menu indicated it was). Maybe this is because we're from the SW, but we wish we would have ordered something else. Overall, make sure you come here!
