I had not visited this restaurant since it was transformed from Silvermine Tavern into Tavern at Graybarns. It was quite the transformation. It is completely modernized and it looks amazing. I had lunch at their cozy patio enjoying nature. My friend and I tried the Merguez Sausage Paella and the Roasted Eggplant. We started with a simple romaine salad, then two small plates-- waygu tarare, a special menu lightly fried mushroom dish with dipping sauces-- followed by a very good cacio e pepe entre. Stop rushing your customers. We are not looking for fast food in an expensive restaurant. The food was very good (except for the thin swordfish steak); let your customers enjoy it. Don't take away the plate of one customer while the other is still eating. Don't put down silverware for the next course while the customer is still eating the previous course. It ruins the ambiance, makes customers feel like there's some stop watch running on their meal. The service standards need to be as high as the prices. read more

The food and server were fantastic, however the management and vallet service are terrible. This establishment requires use of a vallet service for parking. After my mom arrived home from lunch, she realized our house key was missing and the key chain had been bent- clearly it was tampered with. After going through the hassle of changing our locks for safety purposes and then calling the establishment to report this, the owner blamed my mom, said it was her fault the key went missing, and told her never to come back to the restaurant. My last review for the place was one of the most hotly contested reviews I've written. One guy wrote me loads and loads of upset, rambling words and sentences calling me a disgruntled housewife of Fairfield County. Now, that moniker can't be farther from the truth and he must have some vested interest in the place. My friend arrived at 4:55 to test the locked door policy but got a call so chatted on her phone in her car in the parking lot so we don't know if that's still so stringent. I arrived around 5:30 and the valet quickly swooped my car away and I walked by reception and up to the bar without issue. It was welcoming and warm. The bar soon became packed and lively while the dining area was more sparse. We were happy to dine at the bar. I enjoyed a $17 glass of Frank Chardonnay and we split the beet appetizer and cauliflower entree. Both were excellent with interesting sauces / seasonings. The bread and butter you get is excellent as well. No dessert for us as we were full. The bar got so loud we couldn't hear ourselves but maybe when windows get opened on warmer nights, it's a little less loud. We got our cars returned to us by the valet quite swiftly. I barely remember giving them my ticket actually. Wonder if that man who wrote me countless messages and words will have his panties less in a bunch now. read more

Oh Tavern at GrayBarns has my heart!! What a lovely and beautiful place with a modern, upscale tavern vibe. Valet parking only, we dropped off the car and entered. Upon walking in the decor was stunning and breathtaking. Beautiful sitting areas, windows with the sun gleaming in, wood accents, and woven chandeliers. We sat at a lovely corner table close to the wood burning fireplace. Our server was so helpful in offering cocktail and menu selections. We chose some drinks and enjoyed them very much. Excellent preparation and mixology. The appetizer we had was perfect! We wanted to order another one and have it all over again. It was tuna tartare and the flavors were so bright and delicious. Our entrees were so well done also. I had lions mane mushroom milanese with watercress and a beautiful bright and tangy green purée with lemon. My husband had a burger which he enjoyed thoroughly. We had a fantastic budino for dessert- a spin on a s'more- this budino was excellent!! We also had an espresso martini. Everything from service, to ambiance, to every morsel and sip we had was outstanding. Our server explained the outdoor patio area and a drink they always bring back for summer. Made a Friday evening reservation around 3 wks in advance for 2 at 8pm. Absolutely loved the food and wine here, but losing a star because it was extremely loud. I love a buzzy vibe but it was hard to hear my husband from across the table. We split the octopus, burrata, tuna tartare and then a cheeseburger. Had the rosado royale cocktail (which I'm dreaming about), shrimp and cucumber salad special, oysters, tuna, fusilloni, and strozzapreti. EVERYTHING was insanely good. I have a gluten allergy, and the staff was sure to check on everything that I ordered to ensure that it was safe. The manager also came over to confirm if we wanted one or two pastas gf in case we wanted to share, since only one of us has the allergy. We had very high expectations for the Tavern, and they were surpassed last night. Spicy margarita was tremendous. Spicy rigatoni was out of this world. The Caesar was super fresh and not overdressed. Steak tartare was not over-seasoned (too many restaurants give you a salt bomb). Crème brûlée was amazing too. Essentially every dish was nearly perfect. We have been here previously and really enjoyed everything but last night was a major disappointment. Specifically the service. Paul P could not have been less interested in us. Never filling a water glass or asking how things were and twice we had to order drinks from the guys clearing plates because he was nowhere to be found. At the end he walked by and dropped the check on our table without request or even speaking to us. We had intended to have another drink but just closed out the bill instead and moved on. As for the food, it has been great in our previous visits but we did not feel it was on the same level. Appetizers were good, but we both had the duck as a main and it was under rendered and chewy. I have no words! First, I don't understand any of negative reviews on this page and then I have no words for the outstanding experiences I've had at Graybarn. Tavern at Graybarn is honestly the most well-decorated, exquisite place I've been to in the Norwalk area. The ambience, service, and layout is beyond expectation. My experience over the summer started by accident when a friend was surprised we had never heard of the Tavern and sent us there for dinner that evening. While we had a short wait for a table, the lovely hostess escorted us to the patio area where a wonderful bartender prepared The Greyhound -- a vodka and grapefruit cocktail, and that was the start of something amazing. Once we were seated were greeted by one of the best servers I've ever had. After five years in the industry, my standards are very high when it comes to service and she didn't disappoint. For apps we went with crab toast and scallop tar tar (which honestly was so amazing and buttery and literally melted in my mouth), the burger, and a pecorino pasta. Honestly there is nothing bad to say about this wonderful place-- everything is local and organic and I highly recommend! read more

A terrific place for a special occasion. Took my wife there over the weekend to celebrate a milestone birthday. Great menu. I had the Caesar as a "Small Plate" - a very subtle seasoning with nice size anchovies mixed in. My wife started with pea soup, which she loved (and she has had quite a few pea soups in the past. This is a truly exquisite place with all the required components: located along a river in the silver one area, a beautiful road to get there, a large valet parking, a tasteful decor, upscale service and excellent food. It is a true high end place without the entitled high end crowd. I had a duck and potato gratin with perfectly cooked eggs Benedict on top, I rarely tasted such combination for a brunch. My wife ordered the polenta with eggs and small bacon bites, a must have for polenta fans. Our cocktails were hit or miss, I will either try something else next time or go for some more classical drinks as the ticket price is a little steep. As loyal patrons of GrayBarns, we've been trying to support them during the Covid shutdown by ordering from their takeout menu, which offers a different meal each night and changes every week (and provides enough to feed a family of four for only $100, which is amazing). Each time we've ordered and picked up (we drive 30 miles to do so!) the staff has been great; you simply drive up at your allotted time for pick-up and someone comes out to your car with the food, puts it in your trunk, and you drive off, completely contactless. Get home, re-heat for a few minutes, and you're dining first-class in your own home, at a great price, safely executed. But what prompted us to finally leave a Yelp review was last night's meal (Thurs May 21), which was their East Coast Fisherman's Stew. WOW. This was the best thing we've eaten since lockdown began, by far. Little neck clams, smoked arctic char, sea bass, black cod and shrimp in a tomato-based broth, accompanied by yukon gold potatoes, roasted garlic crostini and an arugula salad w/ honey mustard --plus chocolate pudding with caramel, whipped cream and brownies for dessert! We were blown away by the flavors and perfect pairings of all of the ingredients and dishes. This was the meal that really made us realize how much we miss our favorite restaurants right now and the opportunity they present to have such amazing food on any given night. We're happy to support their continuing efforts and hope they come out ok on the other side of all this. Thanks again to the staff and the cooks and the chefs at Tavern at GrayBarns. I've always thought Bolognese was a meat sauce. I mean, that's the way Marcella Hazen or Lydia Bastianich or Angela Baldanza makes it. Not Gray Barns. Nope. A tomato. Very wide pasta (almost a lasagna noodle), occasionally stuck together. There were ample noodles, wide ones, and two were stuck together. I guess that added more depth of flavor, more starch notes. A broth of unknown origin. Was it worth waiting for? Well, we did wait. Almost a half an hour after the salads were cleared. And only after we asked a manager if she had seen our entrees anywhere. Our waiter, on the other hand, passed by our table with frequency but without concern that we were sitting there and sitting there and sitting there, food-less. He did make sure my guests' wine glasses stayed full. Not mine. Just theirs. Why did I tip him? More to the point, will I be back? Not too much of a chance for that to happen. read more

I completely understand how difficult it must be to operate during covid but i have to say our dining experience this time around was nowhere near as good as the one we had last year (which was truly excellent). The ambience and service etx were lovely. It was the food. Which lacked seasoning. We ordered 4 things and apart from the tuna tartare which my husband said was fine, the other 3 were sorely lacking. The heirloom tomato salad which should have has amazing ripe tomatoes as the star instead had something that didnt even taste farm grown. And the fried cheese ball was disappointing too. And everything needed seasoning! The eggplant was a bit better but needed more of the pine nut sauce.the lobster was truly disappointing. The salad it came with was floating in some strange liquid. The green sauce which was actaually on point was lost as a result. The lobster itself needed more grill marks. Dessert was our favourite - was excellent. Clam toast was very rich and heavy, and beef tartare texture was off - seemed like it had been premixed ahead of time and tasted slightly cooked. Service was great throughout the meal and the waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu items. For starters, we got the crab toast and kale salad - both were tasty and relatively easy to share. For mains, my sister got the cheeseburger and fries and enjoyed it. My wife got the halibut and also found it quite good. I had the lobster which was flavorful, though I felt there could have been more provided for the cost.
