I visited recently for the World Cup final match and stood in the back bar which was open seating; no reservation required. (Side note: The strawberry-head bartender working back here had the most on-the-point service. She was handling it like a boss and was extremely attentive. Ordering was super fast which I appreciated greatly!) Otherwise, I hadn't been back since them later clubbing days in 2011-2014. Now its a rather sleek sports bar with many a flat screen TV, perfectly synced up for ultimate viewing and emitting the most crisp, superb sound. They did have a DJ set up in the back bar to play some bangers during the hydration breaks and in between half time entertainment. Gotta admit, it was bumping. What was not bumping were the prices. Not sure if there was an upcharge during the match or what. Prices were also not very apparent though we did pay in cash so no receipt. With the exception of the $5 special beer, Michelob (aka water), it seemed like IPA's were landing around $10-12, with other lower ABV beverages on tap likely around $9 or so. I can't believe I paid $12 for a Guinness!! Glasses were somewhat weird being oddly lightweight, almost plastic. The glasses were also extremely scratched up and/ or foggy so not the cleanest. Tavern at the Beach on Garnet turned a simple "passport-only" policy into a fake-law TED Talk by their "head security guard." My girlfriend is 27 and presented a valid UK driver's license. Totally fine if their policy is "passport only." What was ridiculous was the security guard loudly and arrogantly claiming they would "lose their liquor license" for accepting the UK license while pretending to cite California law to everyone outside. For the record: California Business & Professions Code § 25660 does NOT make foreign driver's licenses illegal to accept. The issue is simply that they are not considered "bona fide" ID for certain liability protections under ABC guidance. Huge difference. Instead of just saying "house policy," this guy went into full Pacific Beach nightclub lawyer mode and started making up legal consequences to sound authoritative. Train your staff to not make up fake laws. We all spent our money elsewhere and will continue to do so. read more

Stopped by on a Sunday to watch a soccer game. I can tell based on their marketing, the interior, etc that this place gets wild at night. They apparently have a single night Friday and their merchandise ("I met my ex at tavern") point that way. This review is for their Sunday morning though so I can't speak to that. This is a great location to see a game because there are plenty of TVs. There also weren't many people which I'm a fan of. They ended up, by the time we left, having 4 or 5 groups and each was watching a different game which was cool. Food wise we had their pretzel dippers. Solid and tasty. Their mustard was table mustard though which was odd. The chicken nuggets were delish though! Substituted the fries for tots and loved that. Their honey garlic c sauce I highly recommend. Walked here so can't talk about parking but the service was quick. All in all will come for another game! read more

People: THEY HAVE CHESS HERE. Like, a chess night. And lessons. And board games. With drinks (well, it is a bar). This is so cool. I went for an event held there: womens only learn to play chess. I took the beginning class (which was a little *too* beginning for me, but ask them before and they will put you in the right class. It was incredibly fun and very low stress. It also comes with mimosas. While there, I saw a regular at the bar wearing a team Williams shirt while watching sportsball (basketballon all the screens) I'm so Team Sparkles/Carlos it hurts, (I'm still not taking about the AU GP). I also recommend parking in the nearby neighborhoods everything is free and within a 5-10 minute walk. Ubering here is also a convenient option. Tavern is a great spot to hang out with friends. The space is fairly large, with a dance floor in the center, but my favorite area is the patio. They have comfortable cushioned seating where you can relax, enjoy a drink, and take in the lounge-style vibe. It's not exactly a bar or a club,more of a laid-back space where you can grab your drink and sit wherever you want. Going around 9 PM is usually a good time. The staff are very friendly, and the crowd is welcoming and easygoing. I definitely recommend stopping by. The ambiance is great, dark, cozy, and stylish. It can get pretty cold inside, so be sure to bring a jacket! read more

We mostly enjoyed our time there but one of the security guards was so impassioned during the finals game between Knicks and Spurs, I actually felt a bit unsafe. I had no proverbial skin in the game, but when people are so impassioned, conflict often happens. I felt he should have not have used the language he did. It was okay that he was rooting for his team. But if I would have been a Spurs fan, I would not have felt even less safe. On a positive note, the bartenders were awesome. A year ago we broke up with Tavern at the Beach. That visit a year ago we were treated to a two-star experience. Two stars no more! Tavern at the Beach we have reconciled! Reunited and it feels so good! We had some friends visiting from out of town and they were staying at Campland on the Bay. We were hungry for lunch and wanted a spot that we could bicycle to. We checked the Tavern menu online and found it to be a regular, non-brunch menu. Score! The four of us biked over and sat on the hook of the bar. We were greeted by the sweet and lovely Kasi (pronounced like KC). Kasi was super cute, friendly and funny. And she kept our drinks filled! We started with an order of the Shark Bites (fried mahi nuggets served with fries and housemade tarter sauce). Basically a mini fish 'n chips and they were delicious. Little chunks of mahi lightly breaded and fried perfectly. Nice and crispy, not at all greasy. And plentiful! There must've been a dozen in the basket. The housemade tarter sauce was excellent. The fries were excellent too. Be sure to ask for malt vinegar too! Becky and our friend both ordered the Tavern Burger (beef patty, American cheese, diced red onion, pickles with garlic aioli on a brioche bun) and they both loved it. In fact Becky ate the entire burger. Typically I will get half of her hamburger. Not this time! Our friend ordered a side of fries with his burger and he loved them as well Our friend's wife ordered the Cali Club flatbread. Topped with diced chicken, bacon, avocado, bell pepper, red onion, mozzarella cheese, jalapeno ranch drizzle and cilantro. She loved it. I had the Fish Sando and it was terrific! I chose to have my mahi grilled rather than fried. It was cooked perfectly and topped with a creamy slaw, American cheese, pickles, malt vinegar aioli all nestled in a fantastic brioche bun. The slaw, pickles and wonderful aioli brought the whole thing together. Such a great alternative to a hamburger. Really, really good. Thank you Tavern at the Beach for the excellent menu. I came here on a week night. The staff is super friendly and very attentive. The tavern feels like a sports bar that's been toned down in good taste. I got the grilled chicken sandwich with fries. The chicken breast was juicy but the sandwich needed more sauce or a salty component but the fries were perfectly seasoned and crispy. Their drink selection is pretty good and they have $5 hard seltzer cans. I will come back once construction is complete outside. read more

Great place to visit in the Pacific Beach area for some drinks and bar food! Staff is very friendly and attentive. We sat at the bar and ordered drinks and some mahi-mahi bites with fries. The mahi-mahi bites were tender and delicious and they give you quite a lot for one order. They were also fried to a perfect crisp. I heard they also have grilled mahi-mahi bites which I definitely have to try the next time. It came with fries and they were also delicious, crisp and seasoned very well. I can't forget about the tartar sauce. It looked like it was made fresh and was very tasty. We started eating right away and forgot to take a picture, there were many more mahi bites than you see in the picture. The ambience was very relaxing and they have tons of seating around the bar and away from the bar. The bar is really cool as it is an oval shaped bar with seating all around. read more

Good stop on a barhop! Stopped in for an early drink on a chill weekday and it was pretty empty. The bartender was friendly and mixed our drinks very quickly! We ordered two dirty shirley's and just took in the ambience at this stop in our barhop. Bathrooms were probably the CLEANEST I've ever seen a bar bathroom so that's most of the reasoning behind the 5-stars. Got the drink we came for, good drinks and good service!
