Nice atmosphere and great to have such a lively upscale offering in downtown Springfield. Service was great, as was the grilled steelhead over well-prepared grits and spinach with a nice aioli sauce. Don't order the Cioppino unless you've eaten beforehand. My wife and I ordered it for 2. We thought they were kidding when they brought it out- 4 mussels, 4 small shrimp, and a few other small pieces of fish. The broth barely covered the bottom of the bowl, which explains, I guess, why there weren't any soups spoons. You can soak up what little broth there is with the bread that comes in the bowl. I would title this dish "Grand Theft Food", with the diner the one who getting robbed. Even worse was the indifference of the staff. When you get 4 mussels and are paying $60, you expect the all shells to be opened, not just 3 of them. I mentioned this to the server. At that price my expectation is that he walks back into the kitchen and lets the chef know, and the chef makes good. Didn't happen. And how did that unopened mussel even leave the kitchen? It's not like the restaurant was slammed. We got there at 8:15, the place was beginning to empty out. When we left at 9:30 there were only two diners still there, and the place is open until 11:00 on Friday's. Not exactly what you'd expect from a 'new' restaurant during the holidays. Maybe the word is out: overpricing and indifference aren't the way to win hearts and stomachs. read more

We had the fig salad, burger and fries, squid ink pasta, and shrimp tacos (special for the day). The fig salad was good, fresh and interesting flavors. The burger was moist and overall okay, we asked for medium and it was quite a bit more overdone than that. The potato bun was decent (soft). The fries were shoe string fries that I'm usually not a fan of; these fries didn't change my mind. The flavor was good but the texture was quite meh. The malt vinegar aioli was very tasty! The squid ink pasta had decent flavor (egg yolk, capers, garlic,etc) and the pasta was perfectly cooked, but the dish didn't blow me away. Something was missing.... The shrimp tacos were great, but definitely spicy (too spicy for someone at our group). I didn't have dessert, but my friends liked their creme brûlée. I also didn't have any drinks, but the selection was impressive and my friends enjoyed their drinks at the table. Service was friendly, but not really attentive. It took a while for us to get our water and we didn't see our waitress too much. It was a busy night though, so it's understandable I suppose. Overall I would maybe come back again in the future, but don't plan to take guests here anytime soon. (3.5 stars rounded up to 4) read more

Ordered a Caesar salad. Stale croutons, wilted lettuce. I ordered fish and chips. I've had them at plank and wished we'd gone there. The grossest Cole slaw ever. Now my dates steak was perfection. Good food, adequate service. I would recommend thus place for a nice meal especially for special occasions, dates or any special meal. You'll find the good well prepared and served nicely. I had bone marrow, delicious but a little under done imo. The chicken rice soup was delicious but a little past it's piker. It was almost a gruel constancy which i like but was not expecting. We went there for the first time last night. Got there early...5:15 pm...because we had a show in Eugene. They sat us without reservations, and by the time we were finished an hour later, the place was full! Guess reservations are a good idea. Wonderful food. My partner had the tenderloin which was perfectly done. It came with a mushroom bread pudding which was a little dry but good. I had a braised beef ribs, shredded, on top of grits in a delicious sauce. Great caramel cheesecake for desert. We loved it and will be back soon! I love everything about this restaurant. The cocktails were fun and the food was delicious! The Great Gatsby theme and menu grabbed my attention and the value, service and food will bring me back again. We had a group of 9 - visiting our Duck for Family Weekend. The service was attentive and friendly. Most of us had the steelhead and gnocchi with pesto. It was so good! One got the Tomahawk steak and others got the burgers. Everyone was happy and full. The desserts did not disappoint either. Crème Brûlée, cobbler and the flourless chocolate cake were yummy! I would highly recommend this spot for a nice dinner treat near the campus. read more

Great food but the help isn't very helpful.. My fiancé and I have been there several times, but with a different experience each time (long waits on food and drinks/not being checked on while eating) but since the food is amazing we have gone back. After our last experience though we will no longer return. We came in as a party of two and was told the wait would be 45 minutes. Although we did see plenty of seating open, the hostess mentioned there was a group from a wedding that would be there shortly. While waiting we decided to go next door and have a drink. We left our phone number in case we could get an early seat and they said they would call if something was available. Once we came back after the 45 minutes we were told from the same hostess that it would be yet another 30-45 minutes, and she asked if we still wanted to wait.. her attitude was almost as though she didn't plan on us coming back because all the empty spots not related to the wedding party she had mentioned earlier were taken. By then it was 830pm so at this point we decided to leave and find food elsewhere. Ended up at the Peddler down the street and although it was a different atmosphere, I would go there again because they actually treat people with decent customer service unlike Tavern on Main. read more

I finally had the opportunity to try out Tavern on main last night and it definitely did not disappoint. We had a 6:15 reservation for a group of 6 to celebrate our dear friend who had recently completed her radiation. We wanted the night to be special at a special place and we all left there feeling like all check boxes were checked. We had the most wonderful waitress named Spencer she was so friendly and attentive and never missed a beat! Everything Spencer recommended to our group from the cocktails to the appetizers and finally the entrees were truly delicious! I can't wait to go back in the near future and explore more of their amazing menu! A remarkable poor experience with terrible service and mediocre food. Something clearly was going wrong in the kitchen, so the delays for food service were perhaps the longest I've ever encountered. It would've been better had the server come over and simply explained that there was a problem or brought an appetizer or offered a drink or something. Instead, they completely ignored the customers and the frustration and irritation grew. Finally, after a 3 hr wait, food was super disappointing. Knowing there was such a problem, the restaurant should've considered taking something off the bill for providing a free dessert or at least some kind words. Never again. One positive, the hostess was friendly and showed some empathy but we all left very very disappointed in the whole experience. read more

I've been here twice. Both times I have got an "I'm annoyed you are here" vibe from the staff. They are not rude, just kind of dismissive like they are not really paying attention and want you to hurry up ordering, eating, asking for things. That aside the place itself is beautiful. A very Gatsby vibe. They have fun drinks and this is where they really shine. If you are looking for great cocktails then this is a good choice. The food is decent. I tried the fish and chips, it was made with tuna and I think given the fish type it was dry and maybe not the best option for fish and chips but it he fries were great. One issue I have is that both times I have been in I am immediately asked if I have a reservation and then kind of encouraged to do so in the future. I tried to make a reservation online for my second visit anticipating maybe they would be busy but when I did they required a credit card guarantee for you to make one and will establish a charge in the event you don't show. I have done this for high end hard to get into places but for Springfield, I know this personally was a no for me. I understand from the business side the why but I would rather opt to show up and try to get a table than have to guarantee my reservation with a card. Given that requirement, reservations won't be for everyone. read more

Tavern On Mail is now officially on my favorite restaurant list. Big open room, nicely decorated. Our server was friendly and attentive. I had steak Frite. The chimichuri sauce was one of the best I've had and the frites were crispy and tasty. My wife's chicken salad was wonderful. Plates were nicely presented (visual appeal) Friday night was crowded and noisy. Reservations recommended. Pay attention to the fifteen minute grace period for the reservations. read more

I'd like to give it three and a half stars. It's trying to be a really nice place and in lots of ways it is. It has a great bar selection. Environment is nice. But it's incredibly loud. They need way more noise dampening fabric and other strategies to mitigate the sound. Our party of 4 in a booth couldn't hear a word the other was saying. The food is good but way overpriced for what they are service (in terms of quality). Pretty generic steaks and Brussels sprouts which I guess you need in springfield/Eugene to satisfy the masses, but don't go expecting edgy or inspiring or new things; and for that reason, it's overpriced. I'd give them 3 and a half stars but I don't want to rate it as 3 cause they are WAY better than most restaurant offerings here in springfield/Eugene. read more

Holy smokes!! This is exactly what Springfield needed! All the amazing different flavors were all paired amazingly with each other. My buddy and I had the bone marrow and calamari for apps and they were fire. I had the New York strip which was cooked pretty much exactly how I asked for. My buddy got the Diablo pasta and he said he would go back for that alone. Plus to top it off the service was better than the food which is unbelievable in itself. read more

I really wanted this place to be great. We went there as a group of 6 on Friday night. Let me start by stating that the service was fantastic, Summer was our server and she was on top of things the entire night! The cocktails were delicious, I had the Bandito and the wine was good as expected. We ordered 3 appetizers including the Brussel sprouts, the deep fried pickles and the mussels. The sprouts were crispy, and had a sauce on them that added some flavor and they were very good! The steamed mussels were in a garlic, butter, white wine sauce and were fantastic. They came with toasted bread to sop up the juice in the bowl that was delicious. The deep fried pickles were decent however they didn't hold the breading so some of the effect was lost. As far as the entrees go, they were mostly good but there were a couple of big misses. The Cioppino was very good and the halibut was also very tasty. The lemon chicken dish was good and the spinach and cherry tomatoes that came with it were delicious. Now for the miss, the steak frites. Two of us ordered this item medium rare and upon cutting into it we soon realized the steaks were purple most of the way through and were barely cooked to rare. On top of this, there was no sign of seasoning to the steaks as far as salt and pepper go, only a creamy guacamole type sauce on top of them. Now, in their defense, our server offered to take them back to the kitchen but at this point after the drinks and appetizers we were both willing to just take them home and eat them later. I broiled mine with some butter, salt and pepper and it was clearly a nice cut of meat and was delicious as a leftover. Maybe the kitchen was busy, maybe the chef was having an off night. I'm not going to condemn this restaurant because of a poorly seasoned and cooked steak, in fact I will be going back because I think this was just a bad moment and I think the place has a cool vibe and the other items were good for the most part. In the end, our server removed some of the appetizer cost and helped make up for the problem with the steaks. We had a great night with friends in a very fun environment that was just brought down a little due to the preparation of our steaks. My advice is to give this place a try for yourself and hope that everything resembles the mussels, cioppino, and the halibut. read more
