I was absolutely thrilled to come back and visit the Tavern after its reopening - this was a staple cozy spot in college for me and the food was always excellent. I was really hoping this new and improved opening would impress me, and I was blown away. The renovations to the inside and outside pay homage to the restaurant's origins, and the charm of the place was perfectly preserved. The mix of colors, patterns, and pieces inside is clearly intentional, and it was gorgeous. Everything we had for lunch was excellent - from the craft cocktails to the soup and salad to the amazing Parmesan garlic fries. I still think about the fries often - they were some of the best I've ever had. The locally sourced ingredients shine on the menu, and service was thoughtful and not rushed. You can tell everyone takes such pride in this New Wilmington staple, and I am so happy to see it thriving! read more

Love this place! It can be a bit expensive but good quality and local showcase of food from the Amish and other community members. We got the lunch special black and blue salad. Very nice lunch item with a great vinaigrette. We also got the wings of the week which were hot honey and would eat those everyday! We also got the stand out star the sticky ribs. Def have to get and try and all of these items are great shareable. Also I had the pomegranate Paloma and need to learn how to make and could drink two more. We Stopped in for brunch with my son and his girlfriend. This place is always relaxing and oozes upscale while also being down to earth. Service is always excellent and Rachel did a great job with keeping up with the obvious high standards. Wife enjoyed her espresso martini but my Bloody Mary was definitely lacking, seemed almost sour. The honey yogurt bowl was light and very refreshing. My buck burger was exactly as described. The young lady got French toast and it looked as if it could feed an army. She found it delicious and enjoyed the Chantilly cream. Love that the Tavern is still open, but not fond of the new menu and look. I enjoyed dining there on special days as a child in the 50's and 60's, and again about 20 years ago. Still we had a good Sunday brunch. The sticky buns are much the same as I recall and I took the Amish popcorn as carry out to eat as we traveled on that day. A young man provided excellent service. The tavern rolls were the best part of the meal and the drinks were very good. Food was not good. My wife got the crab cakes, they were mostly shrimp with very little crab, were luke warm and very small. I ordered the 18 oz ribeye which was very well cooked and seasoned but had so much gristle it was totally disappointing. You should never have to spit out part of a $72 steak. The twice baked potato was very small, cold in the middle and tasted like it was microwaved. The caramelized onions had good flavor but also cold and clearly microwaved, but not long enough to make them hot. The sticky bun was very good, but was microscopic child size. The meals overall were a $250 disappointment. Seating was very cramped at an undersized 2 top table and squished in the middle of 2 other 2 tops. The tables were so close the servers had trouble getting to the other tables, when guests from a 4 top finished and tried to leave, the table next to us had to stand up to allow the 4 top guest room to stand and leave. It may be a good place for a burger and a drink at the bar, but for nice sit down dinner experience. save your money, it was very disappointing. read more

What a beautiful restaurant! Our entire experience was incredible. We shared the flaky biscuits with summery butter and honey . We each had the steak and fries. The steak was grilled to perfection. I rarely leave reviews. Honestly, I don't think I have ever left a Yelp review, certainly not a good one. However, as I planned my meal for tonight, I decided to check out the Taverns Yelp page to scroll some photos and saw all of the negative reviews and I was DISGUSTED with all of the negative ones! I need to actually breathe and sort through my thoughts: #1 The food is amazing! My husband and I have been by over a handful of times since the renovation and have not once had a bad meal! #2 Speaking of the renovation, they did amazing! The place looks better than ever! I saw someone in the comments complaining about the upstairs bathroom being closed to the public due to a private party up there-- hey guess what, that bathroom wasn't ever open to the public before! Be grateful it exists at all! Also- they literally spent god knows how much INSTALLING AN ELEVATOR, and you want to go cry accessibility?? As someone that actually does have a disability, this renovation has been amazing for me. Go to your chain restaurant, eat your subpar meal, and complain to someone else. #3 Rude owners? Unbelievable. The husband and wife have both greeted my husband and myself on separate occasions to check on us, our food, our experience. I could tell you so much about them, where they are from, why they opened this place, how the renovations went, it's honestly wild. I went to the old tavern a million times in my life and I have no idea who owned that place.. the owner actually brought my mother-in-law out homemade brown butter cookies on her birthday (along with her birthday dessert) to take home for later for free! I mean, come on. Maybe you all should just be nicer. #4 Who complains about young servers? A wait at a restaurant? My servers have been so sweet and always made the best recommendations to ensure our meal was fantastic. Anything from "you have to try that with this sauce" or "I will get you some extra sauce to go with that, you'll need it!". You could easily say- going the extra mile. We have never waited once, but have always made a reservation. Who wouldn't? A new and popular restaurant, seems logical? #5 The price tag on a fantastic farm-to-table meal with an ever-changing seasonal menu, that supports the local farmers/fisherman/etc., PLUS the ambiance of a Joanna Gaines masterpiece. Great food. The restaurant was very clean and loved all the pictures and information about the history of the restaurant. The waitress Ana was very attentive. I got The Nancy. Sometimes chicken sandwiches have a very thin pressed chicken on them, but not this one. There was an entire chicken breast, it was not too dry and had a great taste. The tomato dill soup was sooooo good and fresh. I thought it was cool how the checks are brought to you in a book. Will definitely eat here again if in the area again. We were in town for a local event and made early reservations for an early dinner. We arrived on time, but still took 10 minutes to get seated even though the restaurant was empty since it was a 3:30pm reservation. The waitress was slow to get our drink orders, and even slower to follow up on getting our orders placed. Once our orders were eventually placed it took 45 minutes to get our salads and appetizers. When told the waitress that we were now getting pressed for time since our salads had just arrived to the table, she assured us that our dinners would arrive momentarily, 20 minutes later after our food still had not be received. We again asked about our entrees, and again assured it was on its way. Another 10-15 minutes later our burgers arrived just in time for us to put them in a to go box. The meal and quality of the food was good, however the service was horrible and we were not even able to eat our meals until we got home later that evening after our event. read more

I ordered a caesar salad and added a chicken breast. The chicken was great, however, the plate had so many croutons and Parmesan shaves that it was wasteful. The romaine lettuce was wilted and soggy. I would not recommend this dish. However, the ambiance was great. the table was sat at was perfect. the waitress only came back once which was the only downside to service. I would go back to give it a second go. If it does not impress then I would never go back due the cost not equaling the quality. read more

We LOVE The Tavern on the Square. We are locals. We have been there a half dozen times. We plan to go regularly. We really enjoy the cream chicken over biscuit as well as the burgers. The beef comes from Chuck Moose, several miles away. It's fantastic. The food is amazing and the decor is so beautiful. The terrace has beautiful furniture. I could go on and on. Give it a try. The renovation to the building is beautiful. We were sat outside at a high top (which I don't enjoy) but my complaint was the table size itself was very small. Our waiter took good care of us, making sure to check on us and our food. As a newer restaurant there are bugs to be worked out. The table behind us had the wrong food delivered to their table multiple times and our appetizer came out seconds before our meal which is always a disappointment. The food itself was just ok. My husband's steak was undercooked which they offered to correct. I got grab cakes and they were ok. Sticky buns for dessert are always a good idea, the cocktails were delicious and we loved the Amish Popcorn. We will be back but some of the small details that make a restaurant great instead of ok will need to be addressed. read more

I went to The Tavern last night with my daughter and son-in-law, who were visiting from NYC. We ate on the front patio since it was a lovely night. Two of us had Steak Frittes and one had the ribeye. All the steaks were excellent and very well cooked. Fries were good too! I would suggest that they add a small salad or vegetable to make it a meal. We began with a Margarita pizza. It was topped with fresh tomato, which my daughter and I loved, but my son-in-law did not. He wanted sauce. Perhaps there could be an option. Service was flawless! The restaurant is very detail oriented, down to a mini fan for the table to drive off bugs! Now for the best part of a really good meal--the cocktails!! They are truly outstanding! We tasted the 75 and the gimlet! Both were well balanced, bright and delicious! Details like curls of lemon peel and herb infused ice cubes makes them extra special. We will be back. read more

I had the opportunity to enjoy a double experience on my first visit to the Tavern on the Square. I got an opportunity to interview the owner Alma and learn about the history of the building. It was built in 1849 by Dr. Seth Poppino who used it as both a homestead and doctor's office. It also served as a station on the "underground railroad" and she removed a step in one of the staircases that shows the basement where people would have hidden. It was later converted in the 1930s to a restaurant which eventually evolved into the place that currently exists. Each room has a unique atmosphere to it and it is worth checking out the different dining rooms. I was impressed with one of the ones upstairs. Alma told me that was a former "tea room" since it seemed quite quaint and charming. Onto the dining experience. My husband and I were given one time use menus and recently they have added wine and beer to their dining since they were given a license. Our waitress explained that the new menu was limited but still had good options. I went with their lighter portion of their famed chicken and biscuits. It is shredded chicken that sits over mashed potatoes and a biscuit and is covered in gravy along with peas and carrots. It is served with one of their famous sticky buns. My husband ordered a Reuben and homemade chips. Almost everything they make is homemade. We both enjoyed our meals and they were very filling! The sticky buns were perhaps my favorite. My chicken and biscuits tasted pretty much like a cooked chicken pot pie. Prices as well are very reasonable. Service was spot on. Our waitress was both friendly and helpful. I truly enjoyed our meal here as well as learning about the history of this place. They sell Christmas ornaments here as well with a portion going to charity. Over priced and under seasoned. Paid over $100 per person and they wanted to make a big deal when I reserved a table for my anniversary. Told me they wanted to make sure our 20th was great with them. They said we will reserve a great table for you ! We sat in a corner and they never even wished us a happy anniversary! Husband had the steak that was tough and I had the tomahawk pork chop. It was maybe 8 oz. No where near what was advertised. They boiled potatoes and smashed them. No salt,no pepper, no butter NOTHING! Not even a salt shaker on the table. If your food is good they don't put them on the table. I saw at least 6 tables ask for them. So that seems like nobody thought the food was seasoned. I reviewed on another page and their response was " thanks for celebrating your anniversary with us!" Apparently they can't even to take the time to see that people are not happy with the food. At least say we are sorry you didn't have a good experience with us. Please come back and try again. NOPE. I will NEVER GO BACK! They have ruined the Tavern. I don't care how much you spend on the building make sure that the food is good. read more

My husband and I went to celebrate my birthday and were very disappointed with the quality and amount of food. We both had the fried chicken dinner with cole slaw, no potato. My chicken was bloody and tasteless. Unfortunately the beautiful renovations do not make up for mediocre food and excessive prices. We'll never return. read more
