I came on a weekend afternoon and it was pretty busy although it was super chilly outside. I've had this place bookmarked for a while and I thought I would check it out. I got the roasted barley milk tea without toppings and more sweetness. I think I made a good choice making it a little more sweet. If I went with regular sweetness I think it would be too bitter for me. The combination of the barley and milk tea was surprisingly pretty good. I've never had a barley milk tea before. Just a heads up that they have a $6 minimum to use a credit card and their regular sized drinks are around $4 so I had to scrounge up some cash. Finally today we stopped by to get food and drinks. The drinks are much more reasonably priced than a lot of other boba places. They are mostly in the range of 3.75-4, with slushy going to $5. I don't like toppings or boba, so this is much better value to me. The green tea without sugar is very strong and full of flavor. We also tried the food. The popcorn chicken bento has a good variety of side dishes and good amount of popcorn chicken. Also very flavorful and I was pleasantly surprised at how good the cabbage tasted. The shredded chicken with dry noodle and fried onions is ok, kinda wish the noodle is not as oily. And itself is not a meal, so no drinks are included but they offer $1 off if you add a drink. This is a convenient place for a quick sweet treat. I have always enjoyed my choices here. I am bummed they have replaced the live cashier with an iPad even tho the cashiers were never particularly friendly. Te iPad makes it even more impersonal. Even on busy days, they tend to be quick. I had a buy 10, get $3 off card from years ago which was honored. I liked that. It does seem silly that it is not get one free. $3 does not get you far with boba! I would give it 3 stars, the boba was a bit too soft and didn't have a nice sweetness. The tea was ok, but a bit bland with sweetness bing the primary flavor and no roasted oolong taste. The brûlée creme was nice and creamy but didn't mix well with the tea. The jasmine milk tea is 4 stars, pretty standard but tasty. The popcorn chicken (4*) portion was generous and the chicken was juicy and tender. There wasn't much basil and it could have been crispier. The spicy pork dry noodles (3*) had a hot pepper kick that lingers and makes you sweat in a good way. I've been coming here for over ten years. They have been pretty reliable, with the occasional hiccup on especially busy or understaffed days. It can get loud during busy times, but I usually just order to-go nowadays. Ten years ago, I might have hung out there with coworkers after work or brought my laptop to study for classes. One of my go-to drinks is the grass jelly drink. It's my favorite here because it's noncaffeinated and they actually reduce the sweetness when I request it to be less sweet (other places, even when you order 50% or 25%, still make their drinks sickly sweet). That's what I got tonight. I've gotten it maybe a dozen times and it's been good every time. Before 2/01/23, their prices were about $0.75 cheaper across the board. They removed 16-ounce cups as an option (sad for me because that is the size I prefer!). They switched to 24-ounce cups for iced drinks and 20-ounce cups for hot drinks. To be honest, I stumbled across Tea Era purely by accident while looking for another boba place that I saw on Yelp. However since it happened to be conveniently located right in front of me as I pulled into the parking lot, I decided to give them a try. The first thing I noticed upon entering and looking at their menu is that their boba is all very affordably priced! In this day and age of $5/6+ boba before toppings, it's nice to see that there are still places with boba at the $3 range. I started off with an order for the Passion Fruit Green Tea w/ boba, and quickly learned when attempting to pay that they have a $6 minimum on credit card charges, which due to their prices, puts my drink order just below the limit. Since I couldn't see anything for around $1 to hit the limit, I just ordered some popcorn chicken to go with it. Cashier was very friendly and I had my order in hand in about 5mins (drink AND food!). The drink was pretty good, and the boba had a nice, chewy consistency. Not the best boba I've ever had, but still pretty good overall. The popcorn chicken was quite delicious, and not full of fat trimmings like some places often use. And the quantity provided was quite generous as I actually had trouble closing the lid. Today was a 3 star day as food was great as usual but minus a star because I had placed an order for 4 drinks (see order and receipt) and 3 food items but they delivered me 2 drinks less than I had ordered. Of course the drinks that were missing were my picks. Someone called me asking if I wanted a different topping for one of the drinks right when I had placed the order because they had ran out but somehow the rest of the order got lost in the mix. This is our friend's favorite tea place, so we had to try it. It's a small place with lots of customers on a Saturday midday. I think it can seat around 7 groups at a time. The ambiance is like a simple rustic rural place. It took me quite a while to figure out what to order from their menu because they have a lot of drinks and food to offer. I settled for a Guava Green Tea with Lychee (to try something new), Grapefruit Green Tea with Aloe (to compare with the one I got recently from a different place), and Hot Roasted Oolong Tea with Boba (my usual drink). The Guava Green Tea is something different. It was okay, but it's not something I would crave. The Grapefruit Green Tea was good enough, but not as good as the one I had from the other place. The Roasted Oolong Tea is good enough for me, the Boba was soft enough for my liking. What I like about this place are the food and sides. We ordered Calamari, Chicken Pops, and Sweet Potato Fries and we enjoyed all of it. I am a Calamari fan and this is one if the nicely seasoned one I had. It's so unexpected for something that cost less than $6. The chicken pops were also good, easy to chew. It's crunchy but not hard to bite on. The chicken meat is properly cooked as well. The line ran out the door on a Sunday afternoon. The lady at the counter had us repeat ourselves several times because she kept forgetting what we said. The Barley Milk Tea was good but the drink was on the sweeter end. Even though I love sweeter drinks, I think 80% sweetness would've sufficed. The drink reminded me of a Black Sugar Milk Tea and I enjoyed it. On the other hand, I didn't like the texture of the taro balls (it had a similar texture of hard boba). I would've preferred boba instead and it would've been cheaper. All the drinks are relatively inexpensive compared to most boba shops nowadays. Came in on a hot day to try this place. I arrived and there was no clear line but people out the door. I asked the girl in front of me if she was in line since no one was at the register she said no. The cashier turned away when I walked up and came back and impatiently waited for me to make my order. As she rushed me through ice and sweetness level she was moving cups around. The inside is so loud I could barely hear her. I asked for topping recommendations for the Guava Cooler and she said any. She finally asked me for what size (regular or large). After all the back and forth she pointed at a sign and told me there was a card minimum of $6.50 so I tried to get the larger size but she nodded her head. She didn't give me anytime to check the menu for something else so I didn't want to purchase anything anymore and left. Customer service needs work. I was in Cupertino and was in the mood for tea (well actually, whenever I am here, I always crave for tea).... and found Tea Era nearby. Decided to venture my way over here around 10pm on a weekday. Not too many people here, but a fair amount of tables where people could converse or study. They have drinks and some food here, but my eyes were I went for an earl grey milk tea and immediately after it, I kinda decided to make my way to Fremont and so kinda put this earl grey on hold til the next day..... Whoops. The next day I did manage to try and was surprised at the earl grey taste that resonated throughout - even with the ice melted the taste and flavor was pretty good, not too sweet (at half sugar that is). Took me a while to finish it (and I got the smaller size) - drink was still good even the day after (refrigerated overnight of course). I think they have a min for card cuz I paid cash. But I go because the location is convenient and they close late at 11 pm compared to other places in the area that closest at 9pm. It is a bit annoying they won't take credit card if it's less than $6 but it is what it is. The drinks are just okay. They leave a weird aftertaste in my mouth and the boba isn't as sweet as I'm used to. My pet peeves is customers leaving the door wide open and not closing it making the store super chilly at night. There are two locations (for now) in the Southbay in Cupertino and Mountain View. I've gone to both locations but it was my first time here at the Cupertino location. Three main differences stand out to me at this location vs. Tea Era in Mountain View: -They sell food/snacks like popcorn chicken, calamari vs. only selling drinks -Accepts debit and credit cards with $6 minimum charge vs. cash only -They use stamp cards vs. the FiveStars Rewards program I would say the consistency between both locations is the great customer service and how they make their drinks. This boba place has been around for a long time. And it currently does take out and delivery like pretty much all other boba place. But the social distance and limit capacity was not well enforced as other newer place, so you are not sure if you should wait inside or outside and no number calling mechanism. The tea quality and boba is good. The tea quality is good, but it does not use fresh milk like some newer tea place. The boba quality is not consistent. Sometime the boba is perfect, but just like the one I ordered in the picture, the boba is overcooked, so it too soft and not chewy. With that being said, I really to had give a thumb up for its popcorn chicken. Excellent popcorn chicken! The popcorn chicken has decent chunk of chicken meat, the amount of breading is perfect, not too oily, and has great taste, very well done. I really like the popcorn chicken bento here ($11.50)! It comes with dougan (firm tofu), cucumbers, simmered egg, minced pork rice, cabbage, and popcorn chicken. I love that the rice is not plain white rice, but rather has that extra flavor due to the minced pork on top, a Taiwanese classic. The popcorn chicken is not too oily, and pretty meaty. The chicken is not toooo strongly flavored, but I like it that way. I got pretty full off of the box and was even able to split it into 2 meals. Overall, I am a fan of every single item in this bento box, and I am a pretty picky eater. Another item on the menu I enjoy is their shaved ice with black sugar. Who knew crushed ice could be so yummy? The black sugar really elevates the shaved ice from eating regular crushed ice cubes to a delicious dessert. You can choose up to 3 toppings, and I usually get boba, green bean (slightly sweet yet neutral tasting bean), and small taro balls (which are chewy and pretty neutral tasting, and very small indeed). Each topping is associated with an additional fee ranging from $0.75 to $1.25. The base fee for the shaved ice is $4.00.
