I love the Tea Maru in San Gabriel so I was excited to see they opened one in dtla. However this location has a limited menu and doesn't have even half of the drink options as the San Gabriel location. I got the wintermelon lemon drink with half sugar and strawberry boba. The drink was refreshing and very fruity, nothing to complain about. I also tried the grapefruit fantasy with half sugar(my favorite drink at the SG location) but it was a little too bitter. My friend got the milk tea with soy milk and boba and half sweet. The boba wasn't that soft though. Service isn't that great, I stood by the counter to order and waited over 5 minutes before someone even looked my way. Overall it's a convenient spot to grab boba since it's in a food hall with other food stalls but I'd rather go to a boba shop to have more options if I'm really craving boba. read more

I have to say I was a bit confused coming here. There is a Tea Maru in San Gabriel that I have been to and it's very good. This location, however, I had some issues with. First, the boba was not ready when we were there. People in Downtown LA get very short lunch breaks and businesses need to be ready to GO. The tea was still brewing as well. The worker then told us the boba was ready so we went to order. My friend wanted the grapefruit tea with sweet potato boba and he said he didn't make any sweet potato boba. She had never had the sweet potato boba before and she was excited. Too bad. So we both ended up with a regular milk tea. One with boba, one without. One 25% sweet one 100%. Both were made exactly the same. Now, if they were busy, I could understand how that would happen, but it was just us two. The menu at this location is much smaller than their full location. I cannot even describe how bad my drink was. I ordered the matcha and it was grainy, the powder was prominent, and there was just no satisfaction for me to keep on drinking the tea. The mango is definitely sweeter than the purple one, so be careful of sweetness levels if you get this one. Other than that, all of their fruit teas were so good! This place is supposed to be known for their handmade boba and I was excited to try their different flavors but they don't even have the other options they advertised. I've been craving tea maru since I last tried the location in san Gabriel. But this place in dtla was not up-to my exceptions. To start off, the service was quite rude. I made a mobile order through yelp. But when I showed her my yelp receipt, she didn't bother to look at my phone and said that they don't take orders through yelp. So I had to re-order and pay again. I called yelp for refund which happened pretty quickly but still was a hassle I didn't want to go through. Apparently, yelp puts order through grubhub and I guess she didn't know that. But if she was willing to help me and figure things out, she would have realized that the mobile order she already made was mine because my order was very specific. The taste: The boba is what's special about tea maru. They have specific/unique flavors in their bobas. Unfortunately they only have black sugar or strawberry bobas. And even worse the bobas were all stuck together. By the time I drank over half the boba, I only came across four bobas (and yes I was counting) Parking. As always I never can find parking in dtla. So My bf had to drop me off and drive around until I got the drinks. To sum up, bad boba, bad service, bad parking. Why bother? I would rather go to other boba places. read more

We were really excited to try this place because we heard about the house made boba. When we got there and ordered, the person working told us they were out of all the boba flavors except for brown sugar. We were disappointed because we wanted to try the other flavors but still were ok with just going with brown sugar. Then, after we got our drinks, all 5 of us agreed that the boba was really hard and definitely not fresh like they advertise! So we decided to ask the worker if we could get a different batch of boba, and she told us no - they only make new boba when they run out! So basically even though they already ran out of the other flavors and the one they had left was stale she refused to give us anything fresh. This was at 3 pm and they close at 10 pm.
