Burmese food already has great flavor, but they add even more interesting and refreshing touches to their dishes at this spot. They also have creative cocktails and cater to dietary restrictions, so it's great for group outings and dates. Although, the quick service with the crave-able food and satisfying portion sizes should still be considered for a casual meal. Can't ever go wrong with their tea leaf salad! Just a block or so from the SF Symphony, Opéra, Ballet, etc (the performing arts epicenter), the restaurant serves contemporary Burmese food and is owned by Burma Love group. The night a companion and I went to Teakwood, it was pouring rain, yet once inside we were transported to Southeast Asia - a cosy space. There is a beautiful bar opposite the entrance that was filled with happy customers. Big windows along Grove & Gough Streets, let in natural light. I asked to be seated in the better lit main dining room. What did we eat? We wanted a few light dishes. The waiter was very nice and didn't rush us or press us to order more. We started with a calamari appetizer dish which was delicious albeit a little spicy for me. The portion was small. For some meat, we wanted to try the chicken satay skewers. I was intrigued by the finely chopped veg - a sort of pickle de gallo. The last course, we ordered the Burmese national dish: Mohinga Rice Noodle. Wonderful soup - full of flavor from the spices used. The noodles, however, were too soft being overcooked that you didn't need teeth to eat them. These three dishes made us satisfied since we're not big eaters (we don't want to sleep through our post meal entertainment). Overall, Teakwood is a very trendy restaurant in the hip Hayes Valley neighborhood. It's different from the other neighborhood eateries (Italian, French, European or Japanese). I would say for me personally the coconut rice side for curry was too sweet and some dishes too salty. My first Burmese experience and what an experience it was! Teakwood is a modern and chic restaurant perfect for date night or a group dinner. We started off with some delicious cocktails including some great NA options. I loved that they had such a wide range of asian inspired cocktails served in beautiful different glasses. As I learned, like any great Burmese meal, we started with a tea leaf salad. I've had tea leaves in Hawaiian food but never in a salad. It was so delicious. The salad itself has greens and some crunchy bits, but the tea leaves are cooked and add a nice complexity and texture to the dish. Because there was a large group of us, we were able to order a bunch of items to share. We had both the chicken and duck curry, roti, eggplant, noodles and fried rice. Honestly, everything was so good! The food was incredibly flavorful and rich and full of spices. I don't know that I could pick a favorite or even a stand out given how great everything was. My experience at Teakwood left me ambivalent. Came for a Wednesday night dinner with a friend and hung out at the bar while I waited for him to show up because of a BART delay. I was one of maybe 3 people seated at the bar and 1/6 parties in their fairly large restaurant. Decor was modern and rustic enough to match their claims of "upscale [insert ethnic group] cuisine". Service was okay, bordering on terse. Duck Curry: $33 for an unevenly cooked duck breast the size of my palm in a fairly standard yellow curry base whose only redeeming factor was the sugar-sweet summer squash. I love duck as much as the next guy, but when the middle is cooked through to medium rare and the tail end is rubbery and still quacking, I'll have questions. Also, there was hardly any curry - just enough to appease the eyes by covering the bottom of the plate and not doing anything for the stomach. Superstar Fried Rice ($29): This was a great fried rice. It was flavorful, it had well-proportioned ingredients, it was pretty. However, it is also kind of where I draw the line. There are dishes you can only "elevate" to a certain point before you begin questioning if what you're paying is worth it and fried rice is one of them. Unfortunately, my experience at Teakwood was pretty disappointing. From the start, things were off -- one of my friends was given a cup with a lipstick stain still on it, and another friend had to ask for new utensils because of dried food stuck on the fork. Not the best first impression, especially before we even got our food. We ordered the tea leaf salad, platha, and rainbow popiah, which arrived after about 20 minutes. These dishes were actually pretty solid -- the salad was fresh and flavorful, and the rainbow popiah was light and tasty. The portions were on the smaller side, and we finished those quickly, but then had to wait another 20 minutes for the next dish: the aged duck curry. The duck curry ended up being my favorite -- rich and comforting -- but again, the portion was small and kind of bare. Just a few pieces of duck lined up on one side of the plate, with no veggies or anything else in the curry itself. For the price and the long wait, it felt underwhelming. The final dish to arrive was the short rib khao soi, and it sadly missed the mark. The flavor just wasn't there -- it lacked depth and richness and didn't feel worth the wait or the cost. We dipped the platha in the duck curry, which was a great combo, but after all five dishes, we left still hungry and ended up getting more food elsewhere. We thought about ordering more, but waiting another 20-30 minutes for another small, pricey plate didn't seem worth it. The interior is beautiful -- soft lighting from shaded windows, a striking bar with liquor bottles neatly stacked -- so it might be a nice spot for a date night or a small party of 1-2. But for groups, or if you're looking to leave full and satisfied, this probably isn't the place. To top it off, we were handed a postcard with a giant food stain on the back when we left -- which felt weirdly on-brand after starting the meal with dirty utensils and a stained cup. I attended a private dinner here with work colleagues, and the entire experience was exquisite. From the elegantly moody decor to the elevated comfort food it couldn't have been better. When we arrived, we were treated to cocktails by our excellent bartender. I had a lychee martini which was sooo good. The cocktail looked sweet, but it was actually quite savory. Soon we were treated to samosa-like appies and fresh salads before the main courses arrived. You have to be strategic when you plan a pre-opera or pre- symphony dinner. It has to be close to the performance venue, and it has to be good, because it's part of the overall experience. In the past Bahia or Jardiniere would have been my preference. But those days are long past. Why mention them? So many good dining options have come in gone. It's not good to get too attached. There have even been fund dining options in this very space that disappeared like smoke. Yet, Teakwood might just have the staying power needed... The space is warm and inviting, the food is well prepared and delicious. The service is good, if a bit distracted. I think the volume on an opera night makes it a real hustle. Getting the servers attention was hard, but it was obvious he was busy, not overlooking us. That said, the food came quickly, and the presentations were beautiful, and the portions appropriately sized. I really loved the platha and eggplant with garlic sauce. The tempura mushrooms were really good, but I definitely wanted more of the aioli. The chicken satay was also really good, but I wasn't a fan of the ajar pickles. We also had tealeaf salad and the hawker noodles. All the dishes we ordered were extremely satisfying. If I wished for anything, it was a knife and maybe some more hot water for my tea. We had an excellent dinner at Teakwood tonight. We started with a fermented tea, leaf salad with peanuts and sprouts and tomatoes and lettuce that was delicious.
