3 1/2-4 stars for me. This place is one I've passed many times over the years. From time to time, I would stop in and grab a bite. So I decided to return today (Groupon and all) for another visit. The place is small but not cramped (there are about 10 tables and a counter near by). Now this review has a mixed bag. The bad or disappointing- price. Now I understand about inflation and business costs but $6.99 for a char cheese steakburger ($7.99 if you want a double; almost $2.00 more than most of the competeition)? $2.50 for a regular onion ring? The "P" word is also the drink of the house w/ Dr Pepper being the other alternative. A bit more expensive than I last recalled. Add onion rings or fries and a drink and we're easily over $11.00. The good: - The counter person was VERY polite.The food came was ready pretty fast as well. In fact, the staff were all very considerate. - The polish sausage was very good (from what I recall). It's about 1/3 lbs (pretty good sized and plenty of onions if you want them). - Onions rings were nice, hot and crisp. - The char cheese steakburger was very good but a bit more expensive than I would hope. So this review will be the first that has 2 part rating. Burger Rating for taste= Monstrous-Beast (4 1/2), Burger Rating for the price= trollish-mortal. Stopped in for lunch. Had the Cheezy Beef w/ sweet peppers, fries and small pop. Spent $12.42! Pretty expensive for mediocre food. The beef was better than I've had at other non-chain places, but lacked something in the taste. Not worth $6.99. Cheese was lacking for a "Cheezy Beef". Sweet peppers had little to no flavor, some were under cooked and crunchy. Fries were basic frozen, crinkle-cut fries. Nothing special, but not horrible. Small drink for $2, was more like a child size. Guy at the counter seemed like he didn't want to be there. He could've at least smiled a little. Cook was even worse. Forget Portillo's and Buona Beef. This is the place for the best Italian beef in the western suburbs, if not all of Chicgaoland. I don't know how they marinade their sweet peppers, but they're so good, I'd order them without the beef. (Even if you like hot peppers on your Italian beef, you should get both at Teddy's.) Their onion rings are another must. They're the real thing, made fresh, not frozen, and always fried to order. Finally, their Italian ice offerings are always great to finish up. I'm sure their other sandwiches are good also - after all Red Hots is part of their name. However, since I live in Glen Ellyn, I only make the trek here a couple of times each year, so I don't have opportunities for full menu samplings. read more

On my way home from work, I always pass this Teddy's Red Hots. I'm always sad when I do so, for two possible reasons: 1) I've passed the place, and the rest of the drive home consists of me realizing that I'm NOT going to be eating one of their great hotdogs when I get home 2) I've gone in, GOT one of those great hotdogs (and a small french fry and a melted cheese cup), and I'll have to work on the treadmill the next day a little bit harder. Parking is good enough. Not a whole lot, but every spot is within 30 seconds of the front door. Inside, the place is clean enough, and the guy at the register is always nice and friendly. My order rarely makes me wait more than a couple minutes, and the price is solid for what I'm getting. The taste of the stuff? Well, I love their hotdogs. Juicy, tasty, although a little small (I don't know if they really ARE small, or I just want to eat more. It could be either.). Their fries are decent enough, and their portions are very large in that respect. Bottom line: a great place to grab a great hotdog at a good price. read more

What a great gem in Downers Grove! We called in our order and it was ready for pickup in less than 10 minutes. The restaurant itself is rather small - and you'll likely come out smelling like the food, but sometimes that's not a bad thing. ;-) My wife and I both ordered Italian beef sandwiches with a single order of jumbo fries and a plain hot dog for my son. I've been coming to Teddys for years and all I can say is this place is amazing! The place isn't much to look at but that brings some character to it and you don't come here for the atmosphere... You come here for the food! Teddys has all the classics from a red hots joint on the menu including hot dogs, char burgers, nuggets, polish, and fries. For some sweetness after have a home made Italian ice. All in all, this place has perhaps the best food of its kind in the western burbs and I would argue even in the Chicagoland area. Good place for Chicago style hot dogs, they even served it on a pizza bun for me. Ingredients were solid, but the entire concoction was really oily/greasy. Their Italian ices were a hit though. I recommend the mango. To sum it up, it was good but not spectacular, and the food added up to more than what I would like it to. The place is also really small and you will probably smell like the food if you dine-in. read more

I hadn't dropped past here in several years and, was craving a good burger. First, I honestly commend this place for maintaining its successful '50's diner nostalgia vibe (complete with a non-working jukebox). Most '50's-styled eateries have fallen by the wayside (Al's Diner, anyone?) - even Ed Debevic's seems to have had trouble. I was waited on by the overaged, unsmiling, greasy, ex-biker dude with the sour attitude beloved by so many other Yelpers here. And, yeah, this guy could use a few courses at a charm school. He has to be the owner, the owner's relative, the owner's boyfriend or the owner's loan shark. No other way could he keep his job. But my strongest reaction was TOTAL STICKER SHOCK. Holy Jeebus is this place expensive! $4 for a PIZZA PUFF?!?! I ordered the Swiss mushroom burger to go for $8.75 (WITHOUT SIDES OR DRINK). The burger was good - but $6 - $7 good. Classic. Teddy's is my first stop whenever I return to visit my folks. Hot dogs are the real deal, though they don't do a poppy seed bun. Good Italian beef. Like other reviews say, their sandwiches might be a little overpriced. Love their crinkle cut fries and frozen custard. I get the kid's size frozen custard and it's still almost too big for me. Despite a $2 off coupon, I just paid over $11 for a single 1/3 lb. cheeseburger, small fries, and a "medium" drink that could easily be a small drink at a lot of other places. Food is pretty standard for this type of stand. We've had beefs, hot dogs, fries, etc. It's pretty expensive. It usually comes out to $20 for 2 people and don't eat a lot. If I could give a review just for their chocolate milkshake it would be 5 stars all the way (even though they are $5). Their Italian ice is super good too.
