Admittedly, you don't want to come here if you're in a hurry, but the food was plentiful, tasty, and reasonably priced. The waiters were very nice, and I think the wait time was because things are prepared fresh. My friend tried the salad with salmon--the salad was fresh and the salmon was perfectly grilled. I had the gyros plate--great battered fries (yum) and a big Greek salad along with the pita and a huge pile of meat. Honestly, for $13, it was a great bargain. We liked the first meal so much we returned and shared a large greek salad and meat lasagna. Really tasty, with lots of seasoned meat in the lasagna. This is my place the UWS, you know, since I'm not traveling to Astoria. They have a delicious chicken gyro. Good amount of chicken, fresh tzatziki, and lettuce and tomato. Their greek salad is amazing. I LOVE the dressing. They give you a nice chunk of feta. They don't skimp here which is why I love ordering from here. One of the worst eating experiences I've ever had (note the 1 star is a gift...and only put on because 0 stars prevented me from posting). I journeyed to Telio last night on a first date and was seated pretty quick. We sat down and were presented with visually unappetizing bread soaked in oil and we both opted to pass on trying it out. After waiting around 7 minutes, we were finally approached and asked if we were ready to order. Immediately upon reply, the person we thought was our waiter walked away. About 2 minutes later, a different person took our order. Confusing. My date ordered some wine and we decided to share a veggie pizza. She told me that wine was excellent and we made some small talk while we waited. The small talk lasted about 20 minutes (we had no contact with any staff for 20 minutes) and we finally got our pizza (after wondering if they forgot about us). The pizza was placed on the table and for whatever reason, the bus boy took our plates away. Seriously...he took our plates. We sat looking at each other...wondering what the hell was going on...then he came back and gave us new plates. Again...bizarre. With the plates, he also put about 4-5 different spice dispensers on the table (besides the salt/pepper that was already there). The pizza looked very dry upon viewing, but covered generously with veggies. We each took a slice and tried it out. Upon trying it, I discovered it was burnt on the bottom, dry, and lacked any sort of seasoning. It was also very skimpy on the cheese and sauce. We waited all this time and the pizza was a total disappointment. Very bad. The waiter came to our table and noticed that we only had taken a slice each (most of mine being in my dish) and asked if everything was okay. I told him that we didn't really enjoy the pizza at all. We cited our reasons and he offered to bring something else. We were just about done at this point (wanting to leave...and not up for trying anything else) and said no, thanks. He was kind and offered to see if he could either cut price or take things off the check. He even offered to pay out of his own money. We told him if he wanted to see if he could maybe reduce the price, that'd be fine...and totally refused his offer of paying out of his own pocket. We adamantly told him no, as it wasn't his fault. A few minutes he came back with a man he claimed was his boss. The man came our table, didn't say even a hello and said something along the lines of, "What is this I hear about you not liking the pizza? What's wrong with it?" He was rude, but I attempted to explain how it was dry, the texture was lacking, it had essentially not taste, and that it was burnt. He then asked me what I meant by not having taste. I repeated what I had just said and added that it had no flavor. He pointed to the assorted spices the bus boy had brought to the table and said, "No spice, it's right there". He also went on to tell me that he makes hundreds of pizzas a day, and not one person has had a problem....getting more aggressive as he went on. At this point, I told him bring the check and let us get out of here. The waiter came over, apologized, and made clear that he was only the waiter. I have never written a review before on a restaurant or eating experience before. This occured the evening prior, but I'm still disgusted and aggravated enough to write about it now, so take that for what it's worth. The food, service, and customer attention were all sorely lacking at this place and apparently they have no idea how to run a customer friendly business. I've never been treated like this before and will surely NEVER, EVER go back...and should think twice before going in there. We passed a Two Boots pizza place as we left and both turned to each other and said we should've went there....we would have at least wouldn't have had to wait 20 minutes for a bad pizza and an even worse attitude. read more

Great food, horrible service! I sat down at sidewalk table. Table was wobbly, there was a shim (wadded paper) beside one table leg. I asked the waiter, a bearded Alex, to fix it. He accused me of moving the shim. I said, "I didn't do it." Alex said,"Yes, you did." I asked Alex for iced coffee. Alex brought HOT coffee. Fifteen minutes later, I finally got iced coffee, after asking inside. I got a delicious souvlaki turkey sandwich on toasted pita, but there was NO SET-UP on the table. I had to go inside once again and ask the owner. I'd been doing a crossword with a favorite red pen. Suddenly my pen had mysteriously disappeared from the table!! I looked high and low in vain. When Alex brought my credit card slip, I saw that he had taken MY PEN from my table and placed it in the check folder, rather than using their pen! This is unacceptable behavior. Alex then refused me a refill on the iced coffee. "We do refills on coffee, not iced coffee," he informed me. I'd never heard of this. As I was leaving I asked Alex, "What's your REAL profession? Because you're certainly not a waiter." As I was talking to him Alex walked away from me! Such impertinence I have never encountered in 50+ years of dining out. The atmosphere is noisy and lively when we were there with a boozy birthday party of regulars at the bar. One of the friendliest waiters on the planet greeted me as I almost collapsed from exhaustion at my table. Ice cold water was served within seconds. The restaurant opened to the street bringing light, life and fresh air. "Are you a fan of the world cup? " "No" I said,. " I'd rather go to a live game." It was the middle of the day and only a handful of people were in the restaurant and all eyes were on their big flat screen tv in front of the bar. I ordered a lamb burger with sweet potato fries. My water glass seemed to remain full no matter how much I drank because of the impeccable service of my waiter. I was no longer in the Upper West Side. I was in Greece , sitting at the table of my long lost cousin . When lunch was served the waiter continued to stop by to make sure I was taken care of and chatted with me briefly about my travels and what I was doing in the UWS. The food was incredible. Ate here tonight. Made a reservation through open table, only to find out that they didn't take open table reservations (not our fault). Honored the reservation and seated us. Ordered taramasalata (good) and Greek salad (ok) for appetizers and stuffed cabbage and lamb shank for dinner. Appetizers arrived promptly but 45 minutes after we sat down and ordered, we were informed that there was no more lamb shank. We ordered a new main course. At one hour, dinner had just arrived. This was just the right spot - the lamb burger amd greek salad were tasty, and the gigante beans we a nice appetizer to go along. Terrible quality food, I would never order from here again. The grilled octopus was not fresh, and a small portion for the price. The owner read my previous so-so review and took action. Bravo! I'd like to re-review Telio based on today's experience. The weather was dreadful: windy, mixture of snow and rain, gray skies. I decided to go to Telio for my weekly pizza fix. I asked if I could sit in the main dining room even though I was just getting 1 slice. I was made to feel at home, the bartender telling me to sit anywhere I wanted. Regular cutlery, no plastic, good quality napkins. Julio Iglesias (not Enrique) was softly crooning, photos of Greece charmingly decorating the room, white Christmas lights adding a warm glow to this intimate cocoon. Noisy Broadway was silent inside the restaurant. Hovering nearby was the grande-dame of the restaurant, someone's mother, no doubt, all dressed in black, making sure the salt and pepper shakers were full and positioned on each table. I went to get my freshly-made white slice and returned to the table to savor it while reading the paper. All in all, a most pleasant experience. Oh, by the way, there's a new pizzaiolo who smiles a lot and is very friendly. The full menu offers great food in both Greek and Italian cuisine. It's worth a visit, for sure. I made reservations for 9 at Telio's for Mother's Day lunch. We arrived at the restaurant where it was fully packed. There was a party of 5 who had also made reservations through Opentable waiting to be seated. This poor woman was 9 months pregnant, and the waitstaff proceeded to tell both of our parties that "they don't accept reservations". Needless to say, they made zero effort to seat either or parties and we both walked out. I would never come back because the lack of customer service was disgraceful. read more

I love this place! I've been a few times, twice for lunch and once for brunch. The food is always fresh and beyond delicious. Greek salad is huge and very reasonably priced. Brunch was a pleasant surprise. I had eggs with salmon and the eggs were perfectly cooked with just the right amount of salmon tossed in. Had the turkey stuffed cabbage and it was lovely comfort food perfect for a chilly evening, with a yummy, authentic avgolemono sauce, I loved it! Also took some "meze" sides, melintzana salata (eggplant dip) which was fresh with the appropriate smokey flavor and spanakopita (spinach pie) and tzatziki (yogurt sauce) were also fine. We split all this and it was more than enough food. Ate at the bar to get away from an abundance of kiddies in the dining room and the very excellent service with a smile from the bar woman was lovely! The manager/owner was also very friendly and offered us a second round of drinks on the house. I had been here a few times in the past, just hadn't been back in a while but now will make it one of my regular local hangs for when I am in NYC... I love this place but telio used to have the best pizza in the uws not anymore now they changed the cheese to that fake cheese and it so hard to chew and swollow, not a good move we used to order pizza once every two weeks now we are done.
