We walked in & it was practically empty, we should've taken that as a sign. We decided to stay & the service was quick, probably due to it being once again, completely empty. We didn't order anything too complicated, just waffles, french toast, eggs, sausage, oatmeal, and hash browns, all of which I could successfully make in my own dorm room :). When the food arrived, it was all cold, the sausage, the eggs, the hash browns, everything. The oatmeal that claimed to be brown sugar was straight bland, just like the rest of the food. The total came out to $45 which is fine if the food was good but that felt like a straight waste of money. The food here is absolutely phenomenal. I have had breakfast here on multiple occasions, but on my most recent trip here, I had the lunch special - a French Dip sandwich with au jus. Sandwich had Swiss cheese and the au just was simply divine. It came with seafood bisque soup which was glorious. Our waitress didn't let us down, but we couldn't thank her properly because she wasn't wearing a badge. On the downside, though, the restrooms are in dire need of renovation. They should be equipped with all automatic toilets and hand dryers. Preferably, the Columbia Vortex dryer. Getting back to the positives, I lovecthe fact that this diner is located near a very active railroad track owned by Norfolk Southern Railroad, and there's a great view of the Tuckerton Road railroad crossing from the front. Instant win there. But I think this place should have a TouchTunes jukebox. Please note - DO NOT EVER ASSUME THAT RAILROAD TRACKS ARE INACTIVE OR ABANDONED!!! It is not only dangerous, but also illegal. Even if they look derelict or abandoned, they could still be active and a train could appear at any time. Food was served fresh and hot. The chicken noodle soup was delicious and perfect for the chilly weather. I was a bit disappointed with the menu limitations, but was able to find a selection which was satisfactory and filling. Staff service was efficient without hovering. She was prompt, attentive and professional. We were impressed by how efficient she was in communicating the drink and vegetable options which were not listed on the print menu. (This however may make ordering difficult for those who require visual supports, hearing impaired or are not auditory learners.) The meal itself (Turkey with filling, gravy and a side) was average, as expected. I have had similar meals elsewhere of both superior and subpar quality. This would fall with midrange. The raspberry tea was said to be delicious. I selected the cranberry juice which was quite tart but flavorful. Host/hostess interactions were seemingly guarded and not as hospitable as one might expect from a greeter and check out process. I'd be happy to visit again in the future to provide another opportunity to increase the quality rating from average to good/great. read more

Been coming here for a few years already. Over the span of those years the quality of the food went downhill. The menu selection has narrowed down to very limited choices. Only thing that still remains good enough to munch on are the Buffalo wings. Ordered the cheeseburger that was super bland with no lettuce or tomato offered. I had breakfast here today while working in Reading. The service was very good. The waitstaff was friendly and accommodating and the coffee was plentiful. The coffee was ok but nothing great. I guess what you would expect at a diner. I ate the spinach, cheddar and mushroom omelette. It was ok. However the eggs were not as fluffy as I like, and the spinach did not seem fresh. If I had to guess, I would say the mushrooms were the canned variety. It tasted ok but nothing spectacular. I will say the same regarding the sausage. They served links that were somewhat greasy. They tasted ok but nothing spectacular. The bottom line is if you want to eat breakfast, this place is serviceable but nothing out of the ordinary. We have gone to the Temple Family Restaurant over the past 8 years frequently. The menu has changed to very limited options and they added a salad bar. They have always been attentive to my food allergies. Yesterday my daughter and I ordered burgers. The first time they literally brought me something with my specific allergen on my plate. They then brought the order for my daughter in correctly AND my order incorrectly. I ended up with a severe allergy response nearly requiring an emergency response. On top of poor attention to my allergies the prices nearly doubled. In the end the person at the register seemed to care little about the customer experience. We will no longer be patrons. We like it... It's a diner, not 5-star cuisine. Comfort food, served promptly, typically by friendly employees. The food is a nicer quality than the nearby 5th Street Diner, but the prices are a little higher at Temple Family too, so you get what you pay for. The bathroom at Temple Family Restaurant has always been clean (well, I can only speak for the Men's room). I do like the plates at Temple Family -- they are trimmed in yellow or orange -- a little more flair than the typical solid white plates. During the month of November, they typically will give you a free slice of pumpkin pie with your dinner entree. A nice touch! read more

I have eaten more at Temple Family Restaurant in the last few months since the new owners took over than I had in all the years of the previous owners. The food is flavorful and barely seems like a diner anymore compared to how it used to be. It's quick, our order is always correct, and the staff are super nice. Since the new owners took over, there has not been one time we've gotten food from there where we had any complaints! We usually do take out and the owner is always there helping and greeting us, and has always been exceptionally nice. read more

Words can not describe how disgusted I am at this place. The only thing that was decent was THE WATER . They have the audacity to call themselves a restaurant, they served me RAW meat.(steak) They gave another party member of mine, GREEN shrimp mixed in with the pink ones . Makes me wonder of the CROSS CONTAMINATION going back in the kitchen. Another party member had DRY fish sandwich and COLD baked potato. Was that microwaved??? This is the kind of diner where the waiters/waitresses know the locals' names. The patrons were mostly from the older crowd. The cheddar cheese omelet I ordered came out soft, not greasy at all, and just the right amount of cheddar cheese so it wasn't overflowing in cheese. The shredded potato side wasn't dry at all and the toast came buttered automatically (so if you don't want butter, speak up). The place was very clean, including the bathroom, and the prices were very reasonable (I may find most of these "southern" food joints cheap because I'm a New Yorker, where everything is more expensive. Lot of bad reviews, and, I don't know why. It's a diner. You get diner food. And solid diner food. I wasn't a fan of the pie, though. Which is sad. I love pie. Pie is life. Long live pie. Anyway, like I said, the food is solid. Our waitress was very nice. Very...very nice. If you didn't like something, you can get something else. I'm very particular about mashed potatoes. They were good. Not great. But, good. Mashed potatoes are great. Not as great as pie, but great, ya know? The two times we came (I'm actually writing this review about our first visit, yesterday, while sitting here on our second visit, waiting for our food) were after work, about 1130. Solid. That's the word that best describes Temple Family Restaurant. This is a casual diner with toothsome fare to match. Breakfast, lunch & dinner menus have enjoyable choices to suit a vast array of customers. Everything from their 3 egg omelets for breakfast to a quick burger and fries for lunch or dinner, you should be able to find an item to satiate your desire. The staff here remembers return customers in addition to the local clientele. They are friendly, courteous and gracious. You should find the service as quick as any diner should be with an emphasis on quality. Being a displaced New Yorker with diners being an inherent part of my culture, I feel that I should pass along some well traveled advice to both the current and future patrons of these types of establishments. Especially after reading some of the reviews posted here. As with any diner, there are plates that you should avoid ordering if you tend to lean toward having a more "discernable palate". Fish would be the first on the list. You cannot determine the freshness and since it's cooked along side other fare, it can pick up some unwanted flavor. Steaks and chops. Stick to a good steakhouse for this type of cuisine. Mashed potatoes with gravy. Unless the place is owned, run and being prepared by a local Mom & Pop with an established history, be prepared for bland, school cafeteria style fare. Diners are and SHOULD be known for good quality food and quick service (especially breakfast) and should be treated as such. It amazed me to read thru some of the reviews only to find that the bad critiques were inclusive of most of the aforementioned foods. Diners are NOT known for their Pistachio Encrusted Chilean Sea Bass. However, they should be well recognized for their scrumptious omletes, comforting mac & cheese and as a great place to grab a great sandwich/burger with friends and family. Food: Same as every other diner along 5th St. Nothing bad. $3.69 for two eggs, toast, hash browns and bacon is a pretty standard deal around here. Servers: Kind, attentive, tend to be on the older, middle aged side of things. Very sweet. Cashiers/hostesses: Some of the most crotchety old ladies I've seen in Berks County. Always get the feeling they're annoyed to have to get up to check you out. I (tried) to use pennies to get a quarter in change, she put them back in the dish and gave me my two dimes and a penny. It appears to be going downhill recently. They recently started adding extra fees to their bills. My wife and daughter both ordered a bowl of soup and decided to split a burger. They tried to add a $0.99 "extra plate" charge. Some friends have been charged for lemon with their water. Had a problem with my son's order. My son can't have cheese. We had to send his order back and had the same entree brought back to the table with most of the cheese scraped off, but some still there. We were completely finished with our meal by the time his correct order came out. read more

Temple got their liquor license they now serve wine n beer. Wine is $3.95 a glass and $19.00 a bottle. Beer bottles only are $2.75 for domestics and $3.75 for imports. They have Sam Adams, Stella, etc. Wine they have merlot, zinfadel, chardonnay, etc. They also sell 6 packs of the beers, though I don;t know the price of this. read more

The Temple Family Restaurant is one of those Berks County establishments that has been around for a while. In restaurant lingo I suppose the word "family" means diner. I called this restaurant, spoke to Mary. I told her that I'd been in the restaurant before and noticed that they had a veggie burger on the menu. I explained that I had allergies to certain dairy based ingredients and asked if she could tell me the ingredients in their veggie burger. I could tell she didn't really want to be bothered, kept doing that thing where she still has the phone up to her face but she's talking to someone else, loudly saying things to another customer or a friend but right in my ear, not even the courtesy to put her hand over the mouthpiece. But I was kind and sweet to her, didn't point out her rudeness, but asked her nicely to check for me, or would it be better for me to call back at a better time? And I mean, not in a sing-song way, I was talking to her as if she were my friend. She brusquely said, wait a minute I'll check, and clicked me on hold. After a bit she came back, and said sarcastically, you know this is a veggie burger, it doesn't have meat or cheese in it. I said, I'm sure, but not all veggie burgers are the same, and they all have different ingredients, and I'm allergic to some weird things, so could you please read the ingredient list to me? She said to me, in a tone that implied I was stupid for not knowing, well I'm not in the kitchen right now (then what was she checking on?) but IT'S A VEGGIE BURGER. Her emphasis, like loudly saying those four words explained it all. I said thank you for your time, and hung up. What an unprofessional unhelpful annoying person. Certainly did not represent the restaurant well. I've eaten at this restaurant fairly regularly, but I always debate about a return trip because the food is often hit or miss. The food I ordered Mac and cheese casserole was terrible,it had very little macaronis in it the cheese was whipped like had flour add low cheese flavor. A total disappointment. Do not ever go there late night! The service is incredibly bad and somewhat unprofessional. There was an old woman passed out in a booth in middle of place and another time a homeless person sleeping in booth. The food is okay and have had my last visit there. It used to be a good place and don't know what happened. Last time the waitress was rude and I couldn't wait to get out of there. I even ordered a slice of cake before I left and when I got home I found out it was old and stale. I had to throw it away. Sad and never again! read more

My family and I went here for the first time in years - NEVER again. Place went down hill big time. The french onion soup had no flavor and had soggy bread in it to cover the lack of onions, the crabmeat stuffed in my chicken tasted like cat food, the hot bacon dressing had no flavor, the French fries and mozzarella sticks tasted bad because the fryer oil needed to be changed, the meatloaf tasted bad, had fatty pieces in it that popped in your mouth when you chewed and the gravy could've been use to put up wallpaper. The black diamond streak wasn't good either, the corn tasted like corn from a school cafeteria and even the soda was going flat. My salad was never brought out either. Worst meal I ever ate - for the price I paid I could've cried - what a waste of money. Plus it's not that clean. Only thing good was the nice waitress.
