    scallop katsu w/ ikura
    Shiny C.

Probably the best katsu I've ever had! I got the pork combo set which comes with both loin and tenderloin, and since it was a set meal it came with scallop katsu, poached egg, and unlimited miso soup, rice, and cabbage. The scallop katsu was cooked rare, so it was crispy on the outside but sweet and plump on the inside. It was absolutely delicious and my favorite part of the meal; I could eat a whole bowl of just the scallop! It also came with ikura and they did a cute little chant while spooning the ikura on! The katsu itself was crispy and tender, pairing perfectly with each sauce. My favorite thing to eat with it was the yuzu daikon, which was so refreshing. The miso soup surprised me because of how much was in it (veggies & meat), but it was pretty good and I would've gotten a refill if I wasn't so full. The service was great, everyone was so friendly and seemed to be in a good mood. The chanting is done whenever there's ikura involved in the dish and it was so funny hearing them chant inside from our seats outside. I loved the vibes here and the food is just as good. I really want to try the wagyu katsu next time!

    Scallop Katsu with Ikura

I made sure to check out Ten no Meshi when I was back in LA! Katsu lovers, definitely will want to check this restaurant out. I arrived around 5:30 PM on a Thursday and it wasn't super busy, so we were quickly seated. The service was very friendly and attentive. They also put on a little show when scooping the ikura and chanting some Japanese phrases. This can get loud since they do it for every table. The menu options include gyukatsu or tonkatsu set meals, rice bowls, katsu curry, or you can order a la carte. The meal started off with grated yuzu daikon, which can be seasoned with soy sauce. Then, came a serving of the scallop katsu with ikura. This made for a delicious appetizer before the full set meal. The tonkatsu set meal was quite a decent amount of food, you can definitely share one set between two people, especially since they include complimentary refills of the rice, miso soup, cabbage, and yuzu daikon. I enjoyed the pork loin and tenderloin combination set, which allowed me to try both options. Overall, I enjoyed my meal here and the tonkatsu set was very delicious and filling. Prices are a little expensive, but I think the overall meal was worthwhile, especially as someone who loves katsu.

    A5 Wagyu Katsu Set

I've been waiting to try this place since it opened. The insane waitlist has been the main reason I've waited so long we were put on the wait list with an estimate of 35-50 minutes but we were sat within 10 minutes of waiting. It's a very tiny restaurant but it's well maintained and if you're sitting in one of the few booths, it doesn't feel so cramped. The staff is super polite and friendly and instantly makes you feel welcome. They're ready to explain any and all questions to help your dining experience. There's really only two main options for meals, pork or waygu. We got the pork tenderloin and A5 waygu. Both were excellent. Most of my party preferred the pork tenderloin but I thought the waygu was very good. It does come rare and cold but they give you the option to continue to cook it which, I did to bring it to a medium rare since I do line some warmth to my steak. I love the crispy exterior and I thought it was very tender The meals are served with fried scallop, egg, rice, miso soup, cabbage salad with an amazing creamy sesame dressing, and an array of sauces to choose from. All the sides have unlimited refills which was nice considering the meals are on the pricer side. I left very full after my meal. However my bf left unimpressed. I would also love if they offered more drink options other than matcha, like tea. That would have really elevated the meal as matcha is too heavy to compliment the food properly. I recommend that everyone try this place once as it's a unique meal experience in LA even if it won't be added to your usual rotation.

The bbq table. That fire will go out so don't take too long to eat!

Might have been my favorite meal in recent memory. We got here at 11:15am on a Sunday and were the first in line. By 11:25, there was a pretty big line. We got sat by 11:40ish so they are a little slow to start. Otherwise it was a perfect meal all around. 3 of us got the A5 Wagyu meal set and 1 got some of the ebi fry a la carte and ordered the rice, miso soup, and cabbage separately. I also got the hojicha latte which was delicious. Tea forward and not too sweet. Perfect for someone like me that doesn't like things too sweet. The food comes out quick. The scallops were first. They do this chant when they pour the roe on top of it. That was a little weird and by the end of the meal, you could tell the workers were losing enthusiasm having to chant it. The scallops were perfectly cooked. Perfect with the dashi soy and wasabi. Also the yuzu daikon (yuzu and daikon - a radish - grated together) went really well with it. And then the meal came out. The meat is barely cooked- pretty much raw - so you'll likely want to cook it. Note that the fire goes out after 20-25 minutes so don't take too long to eat it. I definitely liked the dashi soy sauce and wasabi the best as a dipping sauce followed by the garlic soy sauce. I was surprised I didn't love the tonkatsu sauce that much. Maybe because it was beef and not pork. Pro tip: sprinkle a little salt on the beef while cooking it to up your umami experience. Some people don't know what to do with the egg. The instructions say to dip the meat in it but I like to do a semi- tamago-kake rice where you mix the egg with the rice. Pour some dashi soy sauce and wasabi and you have yourself a delicious, silky rice dish. The service was great as they check on you relatively regularly but not so much you're annoyed. All in all a great meal but highly recommend you come early to avoid the wait!

Gyukatsu - A5 Wagyu Tenderloin Cutlet Set Meal
    Candace C.

I felt like I was transported to Kyoto when I ate at Ten no Meshi (and yes, I have been to Kyoto)! I went with a friend and we ordered one Gyukatsu - A5 Wagyu Tenderloin Cutlet Set Meal and one Tonkatsu - Kurobuta Pork Loin Cutlet Set Meal. We split the gyukatsu and tonkatsu half and half so that we could both try and enjoy both. The sets come with a scallop cutlet with ikura (salmon roe), added tableside with a presentation. They ask if you want it before adding it. This dish was beautiful and delicious. The scallop is massive and cooked just right, the panko is perfectly airy and crispy (this applies across the board), and the ikura is delicate and rich. The A5 wagyu was melt-in-your-mouth perfect. They provide a lightly heated plate to give your wagyu a subtle sear if desired. The restaurant has certifications for the wagyu available to peruse. The pork loin was tender and lovely. It's not super thick. The sets come with yuzu daikon (radish), unlimited cabbage, an onsen egg (very subtly slow-poached), a bowl of white rice, a small bowl of spicy sauce and miso soup. Everything is beautifully cooked and presented. There are a few sauces/seasonings provided on the table with pairing recommendations. Ask for the guide if you don't see it on your table. They included: specialty salt, dashi soy sauce, garlic soy sauce, tonkatsu sauce, and spicy sauce. I tried all of them in various combinations in small amounts out of curiosity, and they were all complimentary. They also have a sesame dressing for the cabbage that is delicious. The service is lovely! They checked on us relatively frequently and were happy to answer any questions we had. All of the servers were super polite, friendly, attentive and observant. The restaurant is small but not crowded. There were no lines on a Tuesday early evening (between 5:30-6:30pm). There is a Yelp Waitlist that you can join - and it can give you a rough sense of how long the wait will be. The A5 wagyu set was $57, and the pork loin set was $32. They also have curry plates and lower cost rice bowls and a la carte options. It is not cheap but the value is incredible. The quality of the food is above and beyond, and the portions are generous. And it really did feel like we were teleported to Kyoto for a meal. There is street/metered parking all around Sawtelle, and there are also pretty cheap paid lots nearby if preferred. I go to Sawtelle often and have never had an issue with parking. I highly recommend and can't wait to go back to Ten no Meshi!

We came around 7 PM on a Thursday night and parking was the worst. No parking in the back and public parking cost $10. Thankfully there was street parking but you have to pay by texting or coins between 8AM to 8PM. Anytime outside of that is free. The restaurant was quite busy. Small wait but if you are party of 2, you have a higher chance of sitting down right away. There is outdoor and indoor seating. Don't worry, sitting outdoor was warm too on this cold night, they have a heater outdoor. My favorite was the garlic soy sauce but my fiancé enjoyed that red sauce from his set meal. I'm not a big eater so the side order of US Wagyu Katsu was enough for me, plus a side of white rice that cost $3.50 umless you order the set meal then you get unlimited on salad, rice, miso soup, and yuzu daikon. Side katsu also gets the salad with sesame salad dressing. I definitely loved the experience here cooking my own katsu meat then eating. The meat was very soft and less chewy as you cook it so cook it to your own preference! All the employees are friendly and helpful. Would come back again when I have cravings!

    Daniel C.

Stopped by this new spot because I was craving katsu. The katsu was solid! The bowl with katsu and the fish eggs were also good. When you walk in all the employees sync and greet you with something in japanese. thought that was funny.

Service here is great!! Very attentive and they are fast to take your order, get you any refills of the unlimited rice, cabbage, and soup!! The miso sesame dressing is delicious with the cabbage. Use the garlic soy sauce and mix it with the egg and drizzle over the rice!!! The US Wagyu set was so fun! Got to grill the meet myself. Needs like 12 seconds in each side to get a nice sear. Very tender and delicious. Definitely put a little of the umami salt. Add your name to the waitlist early, but don't miss your slot when they call your name. Gets super busy on the weekdays after 6:30pm. A cute couple tables outside, 5 booths inside and a bar seating section.

    Jessica G.

Great service and experience! Food was delicious! Came for lunch and there wasn't a wait so that was nice! I love have they give you unlimited amount of rice, cabbage, and miso soup. Even though you really don't need it, but it's nice to have that option. I tried their pork combination, and I find the tenderloin piece absolutely delicious! They do a special chant for their ikura topped dishes. I can't wait to come back and try their wagyu option.

Ten No Meshi on Sawtelle may be small, but it has the kind of charm and consistency that keeps you thinking about your next visit before you've even left. I've eaten at plenty of spots along this busy stretch of West LA, but this little restaurant stands out for its simplicity, warmth, and truly exceptional service. The restaurant itself is compact--intimate, even--but in the best way. It feels like a tucked‑away neighborhood spot where the focus is on good food and genuine hospitality. There's both indoor and outdoor seating, and while the space isn't large, it's thoughtfully arranged so you never feel cramped. The vibe is relaxed and unpretentious, the kind of place where you can settle in comfortably whether you're grabbing a quick meal or lingering a bit longer. The service here is exceptional. Not just "good for a small restaurant," but genuinely some of the best overall service I've had in the area. The staff is attentive without hovering, friendly without being forced, and incredibly efficient. You can feel how much pride they take in the food and the experience, and that energy is contagious. I've tried both the katsu and the curry, and they have never disappointed. The katsu is crisp, golden, and perfectly cooked--light enough to enjoy fully but hearty enough to satisfy. The curry is rich, comforting, and deeply flavorful without being heavy or overly salty. Together, they make a combination that feels like pure comfort in a bowl. Every bite tastes intentional, balanced, and made with care. It's the kind of food that hits the spot every single time. Ten No Meshi may be small, but it has a big heart and even bigger flavor. Between the cozy atmosphere, the smooth Yelp waitlist system, the standout service, and the consistently delicious katsu and curry, it's a place that earns its loyal following. If you're on Sawtelle and craving something comforting, simple, and exceptionally well done, Ten No Meshi is absolutely worth the stop. It's one of those rare restaurants where everything--from the food to the service--just works.

Service was great, really loved the vibes. Food was good but not necessarily something I'd go back for especially considering there was a bit of a wait.

    Callie S.

Maybe this place had too much hype but I went in expecting more. After a 30 min wait at 9pm for dinner, we were seated outside. We ordered the A5 wagyu tonkatsu and the pork cutlet bowl to share. They were both pretty good but I've definitely had better tonkatsu elsewhere. Wagyu was served somewhat raw and you can grill them to your liking on the hot stone. I thought the pork cutlet bowl was better because it had some seasoning on the rice (katsudon). There are a few sauces to choose from to dip the Wagyu and my favorite was the spicy dipping sauce. The performance when they serve you food is kinda unique and reminds me of being in Japan for a little bit. Overall a good experience but definitely not going to wait in a long line for this. So hopefully the hype dies down soon.

Kurobuta Rosu & Hire Combination Katsu Set
    Samuel L.

Easily the best katsu place I've had in LA and probably the best food in the Sawtelle area. Ten no Meshi serves great katsu options from Japan and insane drinks as well. The lines can get pretty hectic so come prepared to wait or arrive at open. Once inside, you are greeted by a friendly array of staff and a cozy atmosphere. Onto the food, between the A5 wagyu and the Kurobuta pork, high quality ingredients are being used here to the max. The pork was tender and juicy while still maintaining the crispy breading from the katsu. From the cozy atmosphere, the friendly staff, and insane food, there's not much more to say other than you need to come!

That said, it was really tasty. Very flavorful, and the quality of the beef was good. I can see myself going there again. Super crunchy, bright, refreshing, and honestly addicting. I added a cup of the Hot & Sour Soup 酸辣湯 too. Organic tofu, beech mushroom, carrot, bamboo, woodear mushroom, and egg. Super comforting with a really balanced tang and peppery heat. Not overly thick or heavy like a lot of Americanized versions can be. Exactly the kind of soup you want during a long travel day. For noodles, I ordered the Dan Dan Noodles 擔擔麵. Sesame-peanut sauce, cucumber, cilantro, crushed peanuts. Delicious on its own already, but I ended up adding some of the fried peanuts from the salad into the noodles and it became even better. Then the Three Cup Chicken 三杯雞 with sesame oil, soy sauce, rice wine, and Thai basil. I do wish it had a little more wok hei, but overall the flavor was still really comforting and savory. Extremely good with rice. Had a glass of Gewürztraminer alongside everything, which paired surprisingly well with the spice and aromatics. Their wine list leans more organic / natural wine focused, which felt very LA in a good way. Ended up sitting at a high top next to one of the managers and had a great conversation throughout the meal. She ended up hooking me up with the Traditional Shaved Ice 傳統刨冰 with grass jelly, red bean, boba, sweet potato balls, taro balls, brown sugar syrup, and condensed milk. I was already planning to order it anyway, and wow... I finished the entire thing. The brown sugar syrup was incredibly fragrant. Packed the leftovers to-go, and that ended up becoming my dinner after landing in San Francisco later that evening. Flight cancellation somehow turned into a really great food day.

Came here today and enjoyed it. We ordered the mapo tofu, Chinese broccoli, popcorn chicken, and…read moredan dan noodles. The food was good overall, although I've had better Taiwanese food elsewhere. The modern design, trees, lighting fixtures, and casual environment made it a great place to sit and enjoy a meal. The cashier and our server were both very friendly and welcoming. I'd come back for the ambiance and service alone if I'm in the area.

Had a great experience at Sulga House of Beef Bone Soup…read more Their beef bone soup is simple, clean, and really solid, the kind of comfort food that just hits right for the soul. They currently have a great deal at $12, which makes it even better value for what you're getting. The sullungtang comes with rice, soup, and two types of kimchi. Service was friendly and efficient, and the whole experience felt easy and satisfying. Place was chill, not too overly crowded. I've noticed a lot of people ordering other dishes every time I go, so I'm definitely looking forward to trying more of the menu, but I keep coming back for the basics because it's just that good.

Sulga was definitely THE place to be for a warm bowl of bone broth on a rainy night. My friend and…read moreI stopped by for doganitang (for two), and the portions were indeed large - for four. We also added beef brisket since my friend wasn't a big fan of cartilage - more for me! The pot itself wasn't too deep, though there was a good portion of protein cartilage. Also important to note that rice was NOT included! The brisket add on came as a pre-cooked brisket that was added in after, as it didn't initially fit in the pot. The staff member told us at the time that broth refills were free. However, when it came time for refills, they said it was only one time - poor communication. Paying was fairly straightforward, but for future visits, I'd likely just come for their lunch special sullongtang after this experience.
