Been here twice. First time for lunch on the weekend and was really happy with the selection of sushi/rolls rolling around on the conveyor belt. It definitely had options that you usually have to personally order at other sushi conveyor places (e.g. rainbow roll, spider roll). The sushi was tasty and fresh. But expensive!! Sort of hard to discern some of the prices b/c the plates are similar looking. Second visit: was right when they were closing. I'd rather they just have turned us back...as our only options were takeout of what was left spinning around on the belt (i.e. the old leftovers). I must of been HUNGRY b/c I went with it despite knowing this stuff was the rejects that others had picked through. And of course, options were very limited, not so tasty anddefinitely not so fresh...and still expensive! You'd sort of think we could get somewhat of a discount since this was all stuff they weren't going to sell anyway - but nope, full price. They were really friendly though and I liked the atmosphere here. Will try again. read more

I've had my eye on this place ever since I started using the Park & Ride parking at Thornton place. I was skeptical, because conveyor belt sushi, while quick and easy, is generally mediocre and overpriced. A place in the retail space of an apartment complex next to a suburban mall seemed less than palatable. The place was pretty empty when I arrived, so I warily eyed the items on the belt and grabbed some edamame to nibble on while waiting for a friend to join me. I waited for about 20 minutes before being able to flag down a waiter for a refill on my water. A few minutes later, when I was looking for another refill (it was a really hot day and I was slowly cooling down), the waiter came over quickly, but it was to ask me to move for a party of 10. I wasn't overly impressed, but I reluctantly gathered my things and moved over to a booth. The service improved quickly as the place filled. Waiters and waitresses appeared from thin air and began circling the room. My friend arrived and we began sampling the assortment of rolls. The first few weren't ice cold, as is expected in a place like this, but they were still far from warm or unpalatable. By the time we finished, most of the tables were filled and the rolls coming by were all fresh and cold. The variety of rolls, which was already pretty spectacular, also improved when there were more people around to enjoy it. The quality was better than I ever expected from kaizen sushi. I'd put it on par with many of the decent sit-down places around town. The chefs were skilled and extremely fast, effortlessly keeping a variety of rolls moving around the room. The quality for the price was definitely above average. Overall, definitely the best kaizen sushi in Seattle in both price and quality. I'm not a huge fan of the sushi belt restaurant concept, since I'm a vegetarian and my choices are usually pretty limited in that regard, so I usually end up ordering off the menu. However, I'll have to admit that it's kind of fun to see what's coming around the belt next, and Blue C eventually made me a believer so I thought I'd give Tengu a shot since it's pretty close to the theater I was seeing a movie at. My first impression was: "BRIGHT" since the place is severely well lit, and fortunately it's also clean and well appointed, but perhaps this isn't the best place for a romantic date. Unfortunately the day I had lunch at Tengu the belt selection seemed to be infrequently updated, making me wonder if they wait to see bigger crowds to start updating the sushi and assorted dishes. Tengu uses color coded plates to inform the diner about how much each dish will cost, which is fine except the only place that this system is advertised is up on a wall that wasn't easily viewable from my vantage point, so I had to keep getting up to check the prices every few minutes. Part of the reason my view was blocked was the "vanity screen" between patrons on opposite sides of the belt, which I have to say I really liked since it helps not having to stare another diner in the eye during your meal. Usually I see something I want to snag off the belt, but alas, during this trip the veggie goodies were either out or not present so I went mostly for menu items, and "special ordered" cucumber kapa maki sushi. The sushi was fresh and good, with soy, Wasabi and fresh ginger in elegant little containers right in front of each patron. The staff cheerfully honored my request for vegetable only tempura which was a nice sized portion and perfectly cooked. Points off for not offering complimentary miso soup and rice, which is standard at most Japanese restaurants I've been to. Double points off for having limited beer selections (only Sapporo and a couple of American beers). I'm a Kirin drinker so that kind of bummed me out Service was cheerful and friendly which was a plus, and since I went during a slow patch I had no problem getting food quickly. Prices were a little higher than I would have liked, (although I've noticed that at other Japanese places too), but it means I probably won't go out of my way for a visit. If I'm looking for dinner or lunch before a movie at Thornton and the Thai place is packed I'll probably check it out again, and I'll probably go back to accompany someone who hadn't tried it, hot date or not. read more

Absolutely wonderful! I go there all the time now! The rolls aren't super complex but they are still tasty and the prices are solid. The staff is a little distracted so don't expect great service. Just don't bother wasting your time here. I came in at 5 after they closed at 2 after lunch.. I kept wondering if they reused the sushi left from lunch and kept hoping they didn't. But of course what do you know, they do... they had put just A TINY BIT OF NEW TUNA ON THE OLD TUNA to make it look fresh.. like ARE YOU SERIOUS? What kind of disgusting establishment are you all running here? It did not look or taste right! The waiter had the nerve to tell me they combine 2 different tunas for 1 roll!! I am appalled. The rest of the sushis did not taste good at all! I have worked at sushi restaurant for many years as well as other hospitality for a number of years and have studied business. This is the only conveyor sushi place I'll actually eat at. Yes, I am a snob. It's good to be a snob when you are eating raw proteins. The place is very clean and the sushi is very passable not great, but a very good value for the price. I always enjoy the food. The service on the other hand, gets one star. The severs seem really disconnected and not that skilled at being "servers". This part bums me out. Better service would mean four stars instead of two. Sorry Tengu Sushi. I wish you had better service (after all we are serving ourselves the vast majority of time. The little that you are required to do shouldn't present such a challenge). read more

I came her for the first time with some friends because we were looking for sushi around Northgate. There aren't a ton of options around that area, so we decided to give this place a try. For conveyer-belt sushi the sushi is pretty good. The salmon was my favorite, although it's pretty easy finding good salmon is Seattle. I also liked the unagi. But there could be more variety, it seems pretty limited here. I would say the quality and price is better than Blue C, but Sushi Land is definitely the cheapest option. The service could have been better. When we first got there we had to wait a while to be seated, even though it looked like there were plenty of open spots. Also, my friends both ordered tempura udon which took a while to get. And when we gave our server our cards to pay for the bill, she took forever to give them back to us. The service was really slow. Bottomline, this is a decent place to go for sushi if you are looking for somewhere around Northgate. It's easy to find since it's right by the mall and theater and there is plenty of parking. I agree with Lisa N - it is almost impossible to get the attention of the wait staff. Pot stickers were hot on bottom, cold on top. The fish was so-so. It tasted ok but had odd consistency. Not many choices of traditional maguro and hamachi, but lots of rolls with way too much rice and not enough fish. Also, too many rolls with tempura or fried items and not enough variety of uncooked SUSHI. Didn't like the ambiance - very sterile with no style. One last strike against them and other restaurants at Thorton is the lack of late night hours on the weekend for the movie crowd. I was pleasantly surprised by this place! It's definitely an above average Kaiten joint and hits the spot as far as fast sushi goes. They have a nice variety, the service is great and the chefs are more than willing to make whatever you request (even if they closed 5 minutes ago). They're very clean and the food is not only good but looks pretty as well. Oh, and try the Green Tea Crème Brûlée. It's yummy if you want something sweet! read more

Pretty decent. The quality of the fish was actually far better than I had expected; when it comes to kaiten sushi places in the US, it can be a hit or miss. But at tengu, the fish was cold when it should have been and foods warm when it should have been. One issue was that the belts weren't stocked up very much- but that in itself can be attributed to the fact that everything I ate tasted freshly made. Orders were a little slow, and service was slow too (understaffed, really) but the quality was top notch which kind of takes a bigger importance when you're eating raw fish... All in all recommended. Coming to Tengu is just like walking into any sushi places in Tokyo. Their seafood quality is always way better than most sushi places in Seattle. Very reasonably priced for the quality and taste. I don't understand why people left so many negative reviews for Tengu...I come here about once a month, servers are always nice and on top of things, I never felt ignored nor being treated unfairly even when they were super busy. read more

I come here a lot and it's usually fine for the most part, except for tonight. Whoever the Mexican server is, he's trash. Was very rude when greeted us, didn't ask if we wanted to order anything, just plain out unprofessional. Made our dining experience very uncomfortable, just gave "no" answers right off the bat. Made us feel like we weren't welcomed there. I would have tipped, but I did not today and it felt great! usually when we come in service is great for the most part. I've never experienced service with this guy though and I hope I never have to again. P.S. don't order any teriyaki thinking it comes with a side of rice. They think people eat straight teriyaki with no rice at this place. I will not be coming back until he is gone! I'm embarrassed to admit this was my first experience with actually eating sushi from a conveyor belt. I tend to be a bit of a picky eater, so I was apprehensive, but the selection was good and the prices were great. It was definitely a great deal for the quality. The fish was good, tuna and salmon were just a mite bit stringy, but really not bad at all. The spicy rolls did not have cucumber, which I prefer. I was pleasantly surprised at how fresh the nigirl was despite its conveyor ride! Complaints: service was slowish for our second round of sake and I overheard the waitress offer a complimentary hot tea to another patron (and not us). Also, the belt items from the kitchen (seaweed salad & edamame) were slow to come up and rather arbitrarily placed. All-in-all, I look forward to another pre-movie meal at Tengu. read more

Cons: * Service is horrible if you happen to get seated behind the glass divider walls. If you're hard to see, you're out-of-sight-out-of-mind to most of the servers. Sushi is mediocre at best. You'll watch the belt for over 30 mins, with five chefs making sushi before you get anything. The fish on our roll was overcooked to the point of being tough to chew, and when I let the waitress know, she said she still had to charge us for what we ordered because we took a bite, mind you the bite was spat out because it was repulsive. I found Tengu Sushi to be perfectly suitable to kill the sushi craving I was having. I know some people are just simply not a fan of conveyor belt sushi. I've only eaten at one other conveyor belt sushi place before -- and that was in London. In the early 90s. I wasn't looking for spicy tuna or or tuna belly. I was really just looking for cooked items and cooked sushi they delivered. California rolls, tempura, edamame and some type of beef which I can't remember the name of right now. They were all perfectly fine and adequate. Service could have been a smidge better, but I've had some really bad service before in other places and this was good enough. It's practically an all you can eat sushi buffet that you're sitting in front of. I would go back when I have I have a sushi craving and I'm in this part of town. So I went here with some friends who wanted to go. Love my friends to death, but didn't fall in love with this place. The one thing I did like A LOT was the green tea cheesecake. The sushi was ok. They did have some rolls that I usually don't see at other conveyor belt sushi places, but they didnt wow me either. To be honest, I'd much rather go to Sushiland. Service was fine. This used to be our favorite sushi place in all of Seattle, but it's been disappointing the past few times we've eaten there. I always seem to spend 75% of my time waiting for something I'm interested in to be restocked on the belt. Tonight it was super busy, so I understood why the belt was kind of empty. Just entire sections of nothing but little signs and no sushi. I thought one of the items I wanted had been refilled but it turned out to be a different roll that was placed with the wrong sign. I've been there on slow nights too, and the belt will be just as empty because there's not as much demand. You used to be able to order the items you wanted off the menu, but they recently changed it so you have to order a full roll (8 pieces) which means I could only afford to buy 1 or 2 different rolls instead of being able to get all my favorites had they been available on the belt. I left hungry and frustrated. read more

This place was pretty good: the prices on each dish were decent, there was variety, health warnings and etc. However the quality of sushi wasn't quite up there for me, but nonetheless it is good! I was a little surprised by the size of the Chirashi Bowl because the photo looks way bigger in the menu yet when they finally served it, it was much smaller than expected. If I thought about the combination of dishes I had to buy in order to get this, the Chirashi bowl would be the cheaper choice I guess. Tengu is definitely a solid 3 star when compared to quality sushi joints, but it's a 4 star when you consider other Kaiten restaurants. It's also definitely on my short list when it comes to the Northgate area. Fairly fresh fish, good selection of sushi and cooked food (mini udon!), well priced, nice ambience (it's new), and lots of parking. On down side, it's not meant for groups larger than 4 people. There are only a couple of booths in the whole place. There can be a wait time on the weekend. Overall, a good choice if you're in the neighborhood or just want a quick meal. read more

Went here again and it is still pretty much a 3 star establishment in terms of food and a 2 in terms of service. The fish is fresh and there is always a good selection on the conveyor belt. They have a number of dishes that you can order from your server and normally it doesn't take that long for it to arrive. I do think that some of the items are overpriced...for example, the medium fatty tuna was the most expensive but it looked lack luster and barely more than regular tuna. While I think the servers are doing their best I don't think that they are well versed on seating. We arrived for dinner around 6:30pm and there was a line of people waiting. While looking at the room you could see that all the parties there had 1 empty seat in between them. Essentially you could have fit another 12 people in the restaurant but because of the way the people were situated it was just wasted space. You should come here but hopefully you come when it isn't too crowded because you will need to wait. That is unless the servers learn a more efficient way of seating guests. read more

Best Kaiten sushi ever!!! This is my go-to place if I want quick sushi. Let me list why I like them. 1) They actually organize all the plates on the belt so you know what you're getting. 2) For conveyer belt sushi, their fish is pretty fresh. 3) If you want something off the belt, you can ask for it (best way to get the freshest dish anyway). And the head chef might not remember your name, but he will remember your favorite dishes to a t! For example, I like my seared salmon to be prepared with no salt, and the chef always makes sure to confirm this every time I order it! 4) Best tamago ever!!! Ok. This might have been a short list, but I think it addresses the most important issues when it comes to Kaiten sushi. read more

Super Yummy! My daughter and I tried it before our movie on a Sunday afternoon. Not crowded at all. Sat at the bar and watched all my favorite items roll by. The flavor was amazing. I was led to believe from other reviewers that it was expensive. It is not. I spend way more at Blue C or Blue Fin. My 2 new favorite sushi places are now at Northgate. I ducked in here with a friend for an early dinner, and I have to say this visit was much nicer than our last. We were getting stuff off their conveyor belt right as it was being put out by the chefs and clearly things were nice and fresh. Fresh, clean, fresh and good value for the quality, and fresh again. On our way out I noticed that you can buy discounted movie tickets and ALSO get a 10% discount if you bring your movie ticket stub! Whaaaaaaat?!? That's cray cray yo. Food highlights: grilled salmon cheek and belly platter, fatty tuna, ooh the sweet sweet scallops... heavenly, umm ooh! the calamari, how could I forget the calamari... mmmmm... Yellow tail, and last but not least saaaaaalmon, I love me salmon. After having dinner with family in Tengu Sushi twice in last 2 months, I ready to give it my review. The sushi rice is above average for kaiten because they are made by hands not machine. Great value-for-money sushi place. My little girls love coming here. It's their favorite restuarant at the moment. The rolls are decent, the mini-Udon is flavorful and the tempura not too greasy. The decor is a bit lacklustre with it's harsh, cold energy-efficient lighting. It's often cold in there, too. I wish they had more booths to make it work for groups better, but the servers do try to accommodate you. Now, if you usually mention "sushi" to me, you'll see my face scrunch up and make that lovely "ewww" kind of face. just haven't been a fan. So when my friend suggested to meet here recently, I figured at least there should be some teriyaki to fall back on, right? We got there pretty much when it opened, so I think everything was pretty fresh. This is the first time I was at this conveyor-type place, and being a little kid at heart, I nearly clapped my hands with joy about the "fun" aspect. I had a blast watching all the little plates of food I don't normally like pass me by. I certainly felt like a newbie at figuring out how it worked. Not being a fan of seaweed at all, we asked for a custom made California roll-not too bad! I might just kind of like this cuisine after all! Of course, I mostly stuck with tempura, gyoza and this sweet rice wrapped in tofu wrapper (don't remember the name).
