Bought an Alaska Roll, which is salmon and avocado. It was really tasty! The salmon and avocado both tasted really fresh and rich. It cost $8 ($9.01 total, including tax and a 4% customer service fee, which I assume is either a credit card fee or the health mandate fee?) This is a grab and go place, so you can get in and out really quickly without waiting for your food to be prepared. Here's roughly their menu $5.50: Pork or veggie gyoza $8: Shrimp Tempura Roll, Rock'n Roll (unagi and avocado), Alaska Roll (salmon avocado), Cucumber Cali Roll (imitation crab, avocado or salmon, no rice) , Tuna Avo Roll, Spicy Tuna Roll, California Roll $12: Special Roll, a variety of toppings and fillings $15-$18, Nigiri & Sashimi Combos They also have a variety of warm bentos and rice bowls, but the availability changes every day.

I love the grab and go concept of this neighborhood spot that's close to lots of offices in FiDi. I stopped in and got a chicken karaage bowl. It was very salty and shouldn't be advertised as karaage because the meat wasn't crisp, and had sauce on it. It was alright. I probably wouldn't get this again, but for the price it worked well. Would say it was more akin to an orange chicken. Next time I'll try something else or go earlier for better selection.

11.03.2023. Chicken teriyaki donburi 10.00. A decent portion for what I paid. The teriyaki seemed pretty standard. There was definitely a lot of rice in comparison to the meat, but still worth 10 bucks. There was a large selection of premade bentos and stuff on the right side of the store. The food is fine, but not something you HAVE to go try. Good for people working in the area who want a quick lunch.

    Donburi selection

A good place to pick up Japanese food. Grab and go. Their selection of sushi, poke, and hand roll options were great. I didn't try the donburi so not sure on that. I tried to order curry from the menu, but the worker said they don't sell it till it gets to the colder outside. I wish there was a sign that said seasonal and it was clearer to tell what is being served to order vs grab and go. Clean and well organized shop food selection, container to place your food, and sauces/utensils. Special Roll: 4/5 The fish on top was good, the tempura shrimp inside was a little lacking in certain spots of the roll. Served with mango on the side great for the price. Spicy tuna Hand roll: 5/5 Actually spicy tuna and lettuce. Affordable price, it's self service so you can use the tongs to pick which you want. There's multiple hand roll options to pick from. I'll come back again to try the donburi or to grab some sushi.

This is an office favorite! Easy grab n go style and the staff is always so friendly.

Solid and dependable spot to grab a Japanese bento for lunch. Or sushi. Or a donburi. Or a bowl of udon. Or so much more. Tenmatsu is not short on choice for the FiDi worker looking for a quick Japanese lunch fix. Making a decision is probably the longest part. Pick your choice, pay, and you're on your way. Personal favorites include the savory gyudon, bright sashimi salad, and for a snack - why not a spam musubi for later? The beef bowl has good flavor and with the rice is quite Asian comfort food. You can get the salad with the sesame vinaigrette on it's own but go with the sashimi upgrade. Mealpal options here included a teriyaki salmon bowl but perhaps a little too skinny a slice. Better to just grab and go from the regular menu here and it's just as fast.

The food is so good, fresh, and at a great price. Both the teriyaki bowl and the tempura roll I got came in roughly under $20, and the owners are so friendly and sweet. No seating though since it is a to-go spot, but a great option for a quick lunch!

PLEASE SUPPORT THIS SMALL BUSINESS!!!! Service: Great grab-and-go spot in FiDi! Love that it's so quick and easy to grab on a busy day. There are both hot foods and cold (sushi) available however, at the time I went (12:06pm on a Friday) there wasn't many options! Not sure if they were still prepping or the lunch rush already passed. I definitely wished there were more options. One thing that bothered me was that the cashier, a young girl, was very polite but then asked "can you make sure to tip?". I was definitely going to tip as I always support small businesses & it was my first time there, but to bluntly ask for tip sort of threw me off. I get that it's such a small business and I'm sure during the pandemic, it was difficult to get through, but maybe a cute sign or a more visible tip jar would've been a better way to communicate tipping? Otherwise, transaction was simple and quick. Food: Sushi was pretty good quality! I got a bento box w 5 pieces of nigiri and 4 pieces of rolls. It was well packed & fairly filling! For $15, I'm not complaining. I would definitely go back!! Location: It's located on Kearny, in FiDi, walking distance to all of the major companies. When you pass by, it really doesn't look like much and is sort of a whole in the wall, but it's pretty much a hidden gem. Absolutely recommend this place!!

    Delicious!

I love Gyudon. I search high and low for good Gyudon for lunch. When i think Japanese food I don't think sushi - I think Japanese Curry, Sukiyaki, Saba Shioyaki and Gyudon. Tenmatsu has great Gyudon! Paper thin, perfectly cooked sukiyaki beef with great sauce and onions. Great great great Japanese Curry! The perfect curry sauce and pieces of beef you can cut with a spoon. The bento boxes are HUGE. The place is probably 6x6 (maybe 9x9) it's tiny but don't let the small size fool you the food here is legit and very reasonable - Gydon $9 Japanese Beef Curry $9. Tenmatsu get's crowded and finding the food in a crowd in a tiny space can be challenging. There is a refrigerated section for sushi, a warming area for the rice bowls, a spot for the bento boxes and the ramen / udon / curry is served by one of the cashiers. Great lunch spot!

I got a seasonal special donburi (Gouka Kani Donburi) as they shared they were adding new items to their menu. The crab on top of the rice was SO good and perfectly seasoned to go with the dish. All of the fresh sashimi was very thick, salmon was clean tasting and buttery. I have never tried the sweet shrimp but it may be my new favorite thing. All sides also perfectly complemented the main dish. Our server so sweet and thoughtful. She was very attentive and considerate throughout our meal. My friend's dishes all were very beautiful and tasted so nice too! The store is on the smaller side but can accommodate party of 4 comfortably. We tried a bunch of different things and I'm glad that we did because the nigiri was not the best thing on the menu. I would come back here for the other things like the box set (otoro, wagyu, uni, ikura). The agedashi tofu was the best I've ever had. The teacup steamed egg was presented well but for the price nothing really that special. I suspect the price is high because of the caviar & ikura. It's not bad, but it takes a while, it's small and not anything that stood out like the agedashi tofu or the other items. The service was really good. They provided a small dessert for us because we were celebrating an event, that was a nice touch. Overall, id come back but maybe not for an omakase or just nigiri.

They stopped serving lunch, a rotational place for business lunches and when entertaining visiting friends. I noticed a sign a few weeks ago that they started serving lunch again (started in April, as told by our waiter). I was happy that this is now an option for these lunches again. In studying the menu, the selection hasn't changed much though it is pared down a bit with a few of my favorite appetizers gone (shishito peppers). My go-to in the past was the business set lunch, still available and what I ordered on two business lunches on consecutive Fridays. It comes with choices for a two-course meal, not counting the provide bowl of miso soup (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=48&select=oIkVbbqPY0HWG9y3YbriEA) and a bowl of rice. Yellowtail sashimi (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=rSCkN5J6l_tJ419JdnxrUg) with shallots and poached garlic ponzu - This is as I remember and a great start to this meal. b., 1st visit NY strip steak (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=4TTrlrBTj60xo_ejeBNg7A), medium rare, with sauteed Japanese mushrooms - I don't recall whether this was Wagyu or not prior to Covid but, with inflation since that time, it's still a pretty good deal at this price. It was hearty and the mushrooms were a good complement along with the bowl of rice. b., 2nd visit Black cod (4 oz) with mixed green salad - Sorry as the conversation was serious so I forgot to take a photo. I passed on this on my 1st meal but knew it would be my 2nd entree here. It was miso marinated with the meat being tender and flavorful. Again, great with rice. Do pay attention for bones (they are larger) as I got two on my piece. Shared dishes: a. Sweet corn with soy garlic butter (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=Fviru3AbJYA_41PQ8geaTg) - There are four to an order so one diner had an extra cob. The portions are perfect as a pre-meal or accompanying bite for our meals. We had this both lunches. b. Crispy brussel sprouts with mustard and bonito flakes (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=48&select=yUjFMqXOxfF-UyYN6ltybw) - We had this on our 1st lunch and, again, a nice dish to mix with rice. c. Salmon tataki (4 pc) with brown butter ponzu (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=I18uKPl-QG0wVQrUUWAglQ) - A lighter shared dish where the ponzu didn't overpower the salmon. On our first visit, there was one large table near the entrance occupied and scattering of tables with two diners. The following week, the dining room was about 2/3rd full and there were two waiters manning the dining room. Our waiters, two different ones for each lunch, were very professional and cordial. With the neighborhood offices filling up with workers onsite, the return of lunch service makes sense. Looking forward to dining here again.

Got a few bites of the tofu puffs, but not much fish cake. Mentaiko spaghetti ($19) - not super creamy and with good flavor. Usually with these types of dishes, I'm concerned that it's too buttery or fishy, but this was spot on! Gyudon ($19) - egg looked like it was cooked beautifully. Katsu curry ($22) - good presentation, seemed to have quite a bit of rice. I didn't try the last two dishes, but I was told they were good. Nothing crazy special though. Personally, I think the noodle dish was the best. We also tried their Hokkaido cheesecake, and that was probably the only disappointing item. It wasn't as light and creamy as the ones I've had in Japan (LeTao will always be the gold standard in my heart). I ate a couple of bites and decided it just wasn't worth the calories. Service was friendly and I appreciate that there's outdoor dining. I saw a few furry friends, but if I didn't have pets, I would likely prefer to sit indoors. Seats seem more comfortable inside.

Kusakabe creates the kind of dining experience that feels carefully designed from the moment you…read moresit down. We walked into a refined but welcoming space where the sushi counter is the main focus, and the meal unfolds course by course in front of us. There is a sense of calm throughout the room, allowing the attention to stay on the chefs, the ingredients, and the details behind each dish without the distraction of a busy dining room. The omakase experience balances traditional sushi with more creative touches. Each course brings something different, from fresh sashimi and nigiri to warmer dishes like chawan mushi that add depth to the progression of the meal. The sushi highlights the quality of the fish while incorporating thoughtful flavor combinations, with dishes like scallop and the dry-aged fish courses standing out for their texture and seasoning. The sake pairing fits naturally into the experience, adding another layer without overpowering the food, and the sommelier's selections complement the progression of flavors across the meal. What makes Kusakabe memorable is the craftsmanship and pacing of the meal. The chefs take time to explain each course, making the experience feel personal rather than rushed. Sitting at the counter adds to the atmosphere because you get to see the precision and care that goes into every piece, from the way the rice is formed to the final brush of sauce on the fish. The pacing of the meal allows you to appreciate each course without feeling rushed, and the team's attention to detail creates a rhythm that keeps the meal engaging from start to finish. Kusakabe feels like a place made for special occasions, celebrations, or anyone looking for a more elevated Japanese dining experience. It combines technique, hospitality, and creativity in a way that makes the entire meal feel like an event rather than just a dinner. The balance of traditional and modern elements, along with the warmth of the service, leaves you with the sense of having experienced something complete and thoughtfully composed.

What an experience! We were celebrating an anniversary and planned a bit last minute, but were able…read moreto snag a reservation here pretty easily. Immediately, the ambiance and service was quite nice. We were seated at the table, but typically I enjoy sitting at the bar to watch the chefs make our food. The service was amazing and they were very attentive. They also offered to take photos and gave us a little gift of hojicha tea since we were celebrating. We got the omakase, which was massive and had 18 courses. They gave us a menu so we knew what to expect for each course, and we ordered some sake. The omakase was delicious and more traditional than other places, each course was so beautiful and delicately made. This is definitely a lot of food, I would recommend the petite omakase in the future as I was stuffed, but it was a great experience if you come hungry! Courses: - Chawan-mushi - super tasty and every bite was delicious and umami forward! - Otsumami - 7 seasonal appetizers presented in a beautiful box, there was a stuffed crab claw in there that was delicious - 4 kinds of sushi - each piece came out one at a time, the first piece was my absolute favorite and blew me away, it was a seared chutoro that immediately melts in your mouth and tastes smokey - Hamachi soup - very tasty and warming soup with hamachi inside, was perfect in between the sushi course - 4 kinds of sushi - A5 Waguyu shabu - this course was extra $10 pp but was so delicious, the wagyu was melt in your mouth and had some grated daikon on top in a ponzu dashi, the toppings help balance the meat so it's overwhelming since it does melt in your mouth, one of my favorite bites! - 4 kind of sushi - they brought out some really great sushis, including more chutoro and an unagi handroll, but I was so stuffed at this point that I felt I couldn't enjoy it as much - miso soup - this soup was so tasty and kind of revived me after all that food, it felt comforting and a great way to end - dessert- I got the hojicha ice cream in a waffle like cookie and it was delicious!
