This is my GO TO FOR EVER AND EVER AND EVER! I've been a fan since the food truck days, to the tiny shop by Don Quijote, and now at The Lanai food court (mall level, across Macy's) at Ala Moana. I honestly think I could eat here everyday and I introduce this place to new people every chance I get. Ok, so the food. I usually go for the Steak Roll plate. That's what they're known for. It's thinly slices steak cooked on the teppanyaki grill, then spiralized potatoes are added and the steak is folded over. Yeah, that description didn't do it justice but it's hard to explain! Look at the pictures! The plate comes with your choice of white or brown rice and you can choose between 3 toppings: garlic chips, spicy, and wasabi. Garlic chips is a must, other stuff if you prefer. The plates are also served with ponzu for dipping. Recently I tried the Boneless Kalbi with Egg plate and almost died of depression when I realized I ate it all and wouldn't have leftovers for the next day. Sooooo good. The kalbi is pre-made so if you're in a rush, consider this plate because they only have to cook the egg. For my keto peeps, you can get the plates without rice and substitute all salad. I did with the kalbi plate and it was so delicious because the kalbi itself has a lot of flavor. I think technically the kalbi has a bunch of sugar in the sauce so if you're really strict, then opt for the New York Steak Plate. Higher price but it'll keep you from falling out of ketosis. 10/6/21 @1200 Stopped by the Lanai in Ala Moana and scanned all the food places in this food court. Tables available once you show the security guard your Vaccination Card and ID. I also need to send a shout out to the security guard who greeted everyone as he checked the appropriate documents. He seemed to enjoy his job and made everyone feel welcomed. I ordered the Kalbi Burrito with brown rice. OMG tastes just started exploded! The Kalbi was very soft and tasty, the lettuce and tomatoes were fresh and that sauce just brought everything together. If you're on the fence about trying this place for the first time then I recommend a solid NO. If you're craving beef teppanyaki style then walk across the street to Wagyukushi at Don Quijote. It's cheaper and waaaaaay more ono. I watched a local couple's YouTube video about this place and I was intrigued! I read the reviews so figured why not? Boy I was wrong and it was a waste of a meal when I could've eaten many other spots. The thinly sliced ribeye potato roll wasn't good at all. The meat was over cooked, dry and burnt at the ends. The potato was raw and not even hot. The ponzu sauce was terrible. The wasabi was sooooo STRONG so make sure you get it on the side but they unfortunately charge you $0.50 to do so. This was a quick and simple lunch that is worth writing about. The Lanai in Ala Moana Center is the small food court near Macy's. There is a solid group of eateries there so your cravings will probably be satisfied. Today my friend says he wants something cooked fresh and wants to see it done. So odd, but he's got a point. We went to Teppanyaki Farmer. I ordered the boneless kalbi bowl ($10.95). They asked if fried garlic chips is okay. Yes please! Loved that extra crunch. Behind scene story of me: For the past three weeks, I've been on a strength training program as well as counting my macronutrients. Initially my calorie deficit was low (1700s) and I was like hangry and everything looked so good until one of the ladies that goes to same CrossFit that I have membership at offered to readjust when she saw that my calorie deficit was too low and not sustainable. It's in the food court of Ala Moana that I have deemed the "local, trendy food court" because the vibe is different than the original. When the name of your food stall is called "Teppanyaki Farmer," why is your special a steak ROLL? And burritos and sandwiches? So no flaming onion tower here? No? Ok. Teppanyaki Farmer is located in The Lanai food court next to Macy's. We ordered the only two selection of plates: New York Steak ($16.95) and Boneless Kalbi with egg ($12.95). They also offer bowls, but only offer boneless kalbi with or without an egg, and garlic shrimp scampi. It's strange that they don't offer all the other meat selections as a bowl or plate. And only the plates comes with "tossed salad." Our Teppanyaki cook was a noobie because he didn't know what Medium Well looks like on the steak as he asked the cashier to check, but it was cooked fine. He even cheated and seared the sliced pieces to get rid of the red color lol. The flattop grill was on low as the New York Steak was SLOWLY cooked. There was no char or any scent of the grill. It was a decent sized steak, but there wasn't much flavor, and really lacked that seared crispness. Still, I give him a pass for not over-cooking the steak! The Boneless Kalbi was already pre-made and just weighed and put into the plate lunch box. It looked and tasted like bulgogi. It was tasty, but just slightly on the strong side. I'm very disappointed it wasn't raw and grilled on the Teppan griddle. The egg was prepared to a nice sunny-side up. The tossed salad was really just chopped romaine lettuce with the meat on top and dressing on the side. Overall, the meal was decent. The plan was to go to GEN...but it was a Saturday night and with the restaurants just opening the wait was 2 hours so instead we walked to the food court in what used to be the old Shirokiya's. I've eaten here before and enjoyed it so I told the family let's eat here...I got the steak roll...which is thin cut steak on on string potatoes and a bed of greens...it comes with 2 scoops of rice and a ponzu dipping sauce. They can throw in some garlic chips if you ask...the taste was good and the portion size was decent...the gf had the shrimp plate which was decent but the kids had the Kalbi Bowl...now that was very good...a good portion of rice, boneless thin cut kalbi and garlic chips...very good..good flavor and decent price. Located in the Lanai food court at Ala Moana, Teppanyaki Farmer is easily one of my favorite places for takeout in the whole mall! My go-to is the steak roll. I get mine withers scoops of brown rice (trying to be healthier...) and topped with garlic chips and spicy sauce - these two are free toppings! There's a bed of lettuce underneath, which I love because it soaks up the juices from the steak and is delicious when dipped with the ponzu sauce. I love that everything is made to order! I ate at Teppanyaki Farmer when it first opened approximately five months ago. I had high hopes for its continued success once the initial fanfare wore off. Back then I would have given Teppanyaki Farmer five stars. Unfortunately, on my second visit earlier this month, I noticed changes that have resulted in a decline in the quality of the plates sold here. This included no longer offering a breakfast menu, the steak roll being slightly smaller than it was before, and - maybe most importantly - not offering garlic fried rice as a starch option. Overall, I will still give Teppanyaki Farmers four stars because I like its steak roll with potatoes and it is one of the better food court options at Ala Moana Shopping Center. People who read my reviews regularly know that I have a major beef with the gargantuan size two scoops of white rice that restaurants here heap onto half - or sometimes more than half - of a bento, container, or plate of food. I won't go into a Kanye-style rant about having to pay $10, even $20 or more, for a plate largely made up of $1 value scoops of white rice. I'll just state that the two scoops of rice phenomenon is one of the biggest rip-offs in the restaurant business ever, not to mention that having mounds of white rice and mac salad is plain unhealthy and a contributor to diabetes. When I first tried Teppanyaki Farmers, I was impressed that a restaurant in a mall food court did something right compared to most food trucks and lunch plate places I've come across in Hawaii. My steak roll plate five months ago came with tossed greens and only one scoop of garlic fried rice. The garlic fried rice was very good and a better bang for your buck to have that option instead of only plain white or brown rice. I was sad to see that the garlic fried rice was taken off the menu. I also did not realize that I had to ask for tossed greens. I was only asked if I wanted brown or white rice, and I chose brown rice. I then discovered upon receiving my plate that I was given the dreaded two scoops of rice without any tossed greens. Lastly, I noticed that my steak roll didn't seem as big as it was on my initial visit. I really like the taste of the steak and it is creative to make it into a roll with the potatoes inside of it. It's very good. I would prefer to have more meat than potatoes though. It seems to be another cost saving measure along with the elimination of the garlic fried rice option. It's very unfortunate and I will take these factors into consideration when deciding whether to eat here again. However, if you like steak and are craving some well cooked meat while shopping at the mall, Teppanyaki Farmer is an affordable food court option. read more

Steak and potatoes...in a different form! Danny N. of West Covina got me to dine at Tae's Teppanyaki on Makaloa Street before it closed down. The Steak Roll was a thin slice of ribeye, rolled around a bunch of shredded, raw potato. Sounds odd, but it tasted so good with the ponzu sauce! The potato adds a bit of a crunch and moisture, and holds onto the ponzu flavor well! Teppanyaki Farmer, located in the "new" food court on the Mall Level of Ala Moana Shopping Center - The Lanai - seems to be a revised version of Tae's Teppanyaki! This place is something totally different and kind of unexpected with it's modern twist on Japanese teppanyaki. Their specialty is the steak roll, but they have an assortment of other offerings to suit your taste. I ordered both the steak roll and pork roll which were freshly cooked to order immediately after I paid. It is interesting how they cook the meat filets and then rolls in shredded potato in the middle to cook. Simple yet clever idea to cook the meat flavors into the shredded potato. They offer a couple of sauces to put on as well as fried garlic which of course I got to add texture to the flavors. If you want to keep it healthy, brown rice is available and if you only one 1 scoop of rice, they put etra salad. They offer kimchi as a side and and highly recommend getting it as an addition. Oh how we all miss Tae's teppanyaki! This place brings back memories of that place. They're located in Ala Moana, Lanai which replaces the old Shirokiya 2nd flood under lucky strike. I've been here a few times and when they first opened they offered garlic rice which was BOMB! Once was garlic chunks mixed in and onions, another time it had garlic chips mixed in... I always get the steak roll which is thinly sliced rib eye steak fold over raw potatoes on top of bed of cabbage, it comes with toss salad, choice of rice, choice of toppings (3 choices: garlic chips, wasabi aioli, and another sauce) I always get garlic chips and mix with my rice. Very filling. Also comes with a ponzu sauce which is what helps this plate, the steak is bland so the ponzu gives flavor. I've gotten it once with kimchi add on and that was a rip off, they jipp my potatoes and put kimchi to replace some.. Yet I had to pay extra??? How does that make sense. Sometimes it's a miss, depends on who is working..... You could get lots of potatoes, you could be lacking... You could have overload of lettuce also and sometimes it's too little. Menu had some changes, price looked like it went up a little and garlic rice is GONE.... Cashier told me they brought the brown rice cause everyone kept asking for it as a healthy. option. Ventured out and took a drive to Ala Moana to survey the pandemic retail landscape! Kept walking till I got to the food court upstairs by Macy's. One of my favs the steak roll. Thinly sliced grilled stuffed with thinly shredded potatoes. Grilled crispy then plated over a bed of romaine. I added crispy garlic and wasabi sauce drizzled over it. It came with 2 scoops of rice your choice of white or brown. Took a piece and dipped it into the ponzu it came with and ooohhhhh it was so good. Just like pre COVID days. They no longer give garlic rice with their meals. I ordered the boneless kalbi wrap and other person had the steak. The wrap was filling but meat didn't taste like kalbi. It was seasoned so there was flavor. My friend said the steak was bland and the soy sauce wasn't enough. It was just plain soy sauce. Maybe they had to cut the flavor since they first opened. The wrap had a lot of lettuce and I had the brown rice. I had enough for two meals. They cooked the meat on a big grill. I didn't see any salt or pepper by the condiments. This is the first time trying a burrito at Teppanyaki Farmer. I love burritos, so I decided to get the Rib Eye Burrito. In addition to the meat, it comes with tomato, rice, cheese, onion, and greens. I loved watching the fry cooks cook the meat on the fryer. The meat is thinly sliced and looks good as they are cooking it. When I received the burrito and unwrapped it, I was pleasantly surprised. It's a good sized burrito. They also give you a little bit of a sauce that tasted like mayo and catsup to me. At first bite, I felt that the burrito tasted okay. What's missing? Everything was there. I liked that they didn't skimp on the amount of tomatoes. Yes, the meat was there, but I would have preferred more meat so that when I bite into the burrito, I can taste the meat. The sauce provided a little bit of additional flavor. I didn't ask, but I'm wondering if they would have provided some hot sauce too, because it would have helped. You may want to ask for additional napkins. Also, be sure to ask for utensils, like a fork snd knife to cut the burrito. I'm not sure if I would go back. It's a food court with several seating options. The prices here definitely reflect Ala Moana rent where a Steak Roll plate went from $10 or $11 at their previous location to $13 a plate. We came here for dinner and they were very busy. The staff was constantly busy and you can watch them working in unison to get all the orders out in a timely manner. When you order a roll plate, you'll have the option of Garlic Rice, White Rice or All Toss Greens. You'll also get to choose Garlic Chips, Wasabi Sauce or Spicy Sauce. "My tractor costs more than your Beemer!" Who remembers Green Acres with Zsa Zsa Gabor? Ha! You old fart! I kid! Okay, a tad before my time too, but on TVLand you can still catch the classic farming sitcom. And wait... it was Eva Gabor?! So, what does Green Acres have to do with Teppanyaki Farmer? Absolutely nothing, but... "Farmer". So on a recent visit to my family farm I decide to stop by the mall for some big city shenanigans. Heck, it's lunch time too, so let me grab a bite at the newer food court called The Lanai! I've been here on a previous visit, but this time a few more eateries opened, including Teppanyaki Farmer, sans Eddie Albert. Immediately I recognize some familiar faces and plates. Yup, like some (old farts lol) mention it's the same business over a decade ago serving the same classics from a food truck! I then recall the classic Steak Roll that always had me drooling like a farm dog in heat! It was my fav and my taste buds are already thanking me. I decide to go with what I remember as best... ordering the classic Steak Roll (w/Garlic Chips) & choice of Garlic Rice. A nice small Mixed Tossed Greens Salad accompanied the plate. Ok, knowing a business for a longtime before the glitz can sometimes be a bad thing lol, and for me, I remember getting these plates for $7 at the food truck. Today, it's $12.95, which ain't too shabby at the mall, plus I admit the plate appears to be more full? Anyways, the Steak Roll is USDA Ribeye Steak thinly sliced and rolled with Potatoes. The topping choices are: Garlic Chips (my choice), Wasabi, Spicy Sauce. Ponzu Dipping Sauce included, too. For me, that Ponzu goes straight on the Rice & Steak Roll lol! And oh my! So delicious! It's as good or even better than my first visit at that lonely truck over a decade ago. This was pre-yelp days so getting a $7 killer meal was common place, but hey, times change and sometimes prices too, but it's understandable being at the high-end vogue mall with Prada here and Louis Vuitton there. Places that would satisfy even the Gabor sisters! So the increase in prices is expected with the prime location and the ravages of time. Of course, all the mumbo jumbo means absolutely nothing if it didn't taste good, right? And oooh my... it's a winnah! In the end, I recommend Teppanyaki Farmer to all my friends & farmers. Not sure where the "farmer" comes into play, but the menu expanded from the old days, so expect more choices, for me it's all about the classics. "It's only logical" So we're at Ala Moana and we decide to try the Teppanyaki Farmer like so many others who have come before us. Yes, it's part of the new food lanai area where the main level of Shirokiya used to be. We caught them at a good time because it was a weekday around mid-afternoon. We scanned the menu and pass the obvious rib eye steak roll and go for a garlic shrimp wrap with garlic rice. Now we have never had a steak roll ever, which in retrospect, would seem to have been a good first choice. Wish we had used logic rather than impulse because the wrap wasn't all that great. And being that it cost the same as the roll but no toss salad (that you get with the roll) it wasn't worth it. Check out the pic of our shrimp wrap (what you see is it) and compare it against the roll plate pics that others have posted. Seems like a pretty big difference in what you receive. The "tortilla" wrap was filled mostly with garlic rice with what seemed like a scarcity of shrimp. The wrap is a pretty good size and was enough for the two of us to make it a nice size medium weight snack that we split. Unfortunately the garlic shrimp wrap was pretty bland, especially when you consider we had a double dose of garlic enhancement from both the shrimp and rice. The cheese, tomato bits and cabbage was somewhat sparse and really did not add much to the wrap. Like eating a rice wrap with a hint of garlic shrimp flavor, not much protein let alone flavor. Will we go back? Absolutely! The service was good, the workers were nice, just our selection was off. Would not recommend that garlic shrimp wrap. Next time we'll try the rib eye steak roll with toss. The many pics on Yelp are of this selection and are basically screaming at you saying, "try this!" As Spock would say in Star Trek, it's only logical". We were looking for a fast dinner, so we headed to The Lanai. Teppanyaki Farmer lured us in with the smell of sizzling meat and garlic. We ordered the Beef and Pork Rolls for the novelty and took the cashier's recommendation to get garlic chips on the beef, spicy sauce on the pork, and garlic rice. It was fun to watch our meal being made but I was surprised that they cook their meat well, well, well done. The very thinly sliced meat was fully cooked minutes ago but it was still on the grill along with other orders. Raw potato strings were put directly on the meat, the meat was rolled up and left to cook some more--I guess to warm up the potatoes? The end result was a dried out meat flap that had the flavor of the added ponzu and toppings, and a lot of raw crunchy potato and raw crunchy cabbage. The garlic rice was gummy and cold, but I could see where they added bits of fried garlic to the rice. I'm not sure if the potatoes were supposed to be raw, I have had raw potato salad before so maybe that was intentional, but other Yelp photos show the potatoes being cooked so maybe our rolls were a mistake. The other day when we were dining at Ahi & Vegetable in Ala Moana Center's The Lānai, we noticed this newly opened food stall. What an interesting name..."Teppanyaki Farmer". I began to think of griddle cooked vegetables and went on to investigate. As I peered at the set up in between the crowd, I recognized the chef from Tae's Teppanyaki which was formerly located at Makaloa Street and Kalauokalani Way. This food stall has an open kitchen with a glass window for diners to watch the action. I made a note of coming back as I spoke with the female cashier who confirmed the teppanyaki chef's experience. She pointed out their menu which featured the signature beef steak or pork rolls. We returned today to have a post workout lunch and excitedly ordered their Signature menu item called "Da Original Steak Rolls". Their menu also includes Breakfast, Wraps, Bowls, Steak (Ribeye or NY) and Fries. Check out their menu as most items include your choice of white rice or garlic rice. However, some other choices that you may select from are sauces or potatoes. Da Original Steak Rolls plate includes your choice white or garlic rice and tossed greens with ponzu sauce. Topping choices are garlic chips or wasabi sauce or spicy sauce. Now, what's the buzz about these steak rolls? Well, the thin slices of pork (or beef) are cooked and seasoned on a flat top griddle or Teppan until browned. Meanwhile, a heap of spiral-cut potato is added to the grill to cook until tender. As the meat and potatoes are cooked through, the chef will roll the cooked potatoes into the meat slices, slice it and place the cut roll on a bed of shredded cabbage. $12.95. First time here - heard the boneless kalbi was good, so I had the bowl with brown rice. The portion was large, the kalbi was thinly sliced (& less work than bone-in kalbi), tasty & tender, and my order was just over $10 ... seems like a good value! This place sells bowls, steak rolls, and wraps. It's located right next to Ahi & Vegetable at The Lanai. They grill the food right in front of you when you order. I wanted to try a bowl, but the cashier told me that they sold out in the morning. The only thing she had left were the rolls. I ended up ordering the steak roll without knowing what it was. I thought it was steak in a roll, like a Philly cheesesteak. However, when I got it, it was a whole plate lunch. You get a choice of topping on your steak (garlic chips, wasabi, spicy sauce). I went with the garlic chips. It also came with a scoop of rice and green salad. They grill the thin strip of steak on one side of the grill, and the string potatoes on the other side. When it's just about ready, they fold the whole thing together. I was pleasantly surprised. I liked it more than I thought I would. The steak had a nice flavor and just the right amount of fattiness to it. The potatoes were a little undercooked. It still had a little crunch to it. I'm not sure if it was meant to be like that. This used to be my go to whenever I'd eat at Ala Moana. The steak roll with the garlic chips, ponzu sauce and wasabi sauce on the side was the perfect combination of sweet, spicy and savory. And then I'm not sure what happened. The past two times I visited this eatery, I was met with some of the rudest employees I've ever dealt with. Both times (once pre Covid-19 and once during the pandemic) I was told flat out that they do not give small containers of the wasabi sauce on the side anymore. Not really sure why not, but ok. I just asked them to squirt some into the top of the container, which they reluctantly did, the first time. This time the woman flat out told me they only squirt it in the corner of the rice. When I asked for more, she told me " No. That's all you get." And then she turned away from me. Not sure why they got so stingy with the sauce, but unless they do some better customer service training, I'm not coming here again. Her attitude and rudeness really killed the meal for me and frankly, made me lose my appetite. It's sad in the time of the pandemic when I try to support local establishments and am met with rudeness in return. read more

I'd never eaten at this food court before, and it was a nice experience. I usually don't like food courts because they tend to be crowded and loud and kind of remind me of school cafeterias. I was SO HUNGRY that it was hard to decide what to get but even though it was almost Christmas we got a seat pretty quickly and went hunting for lunch! I ended up at Teppanyaki Farmer, kind of a funny name for a restaurant, but I was so glad I got what I did! This was the boneless kalbi sandwich, and while it wasn't the thick kalbi I thought it would be, it wasn't a bad deal for $12.95, with a good salad and those crispy garlic chips really made it for me. I added a bottled water and a side of fries and it came up to almost $19, which is a bit steep for a food court but it tasted good. read more

Haven't been here in awhile; still great food! We got their popular Steak Roll plate w/Ponzu Sauce; in fact we got two of them; they are that good. They put a heaping amount of shredded potatoes on top of their thinly sliced steak, then rolls them over. Then you pour their Ponzu Sauce over it or you can grab a piece of the steak w/some shredded potatoes & dip it in the sauce. I was wondering what Tae's Teppanyaki craze was all about, but didn't want to bother with their old location. I will visit them at this new location. I'm was pretty impressed. I tried the steak roll and the pork kim chee roll. Both have string potatoes in them. The string potatoes don't add much for the kim chee pork roll, but it's awesome in the steak roll. I do agree with other yelpers on the well cooked steak. It's thinly sliced and pretty good quality, so it's forgiving. They can fix this though. A welcomed addition to the lanai area. read more

They are back! When they closed down I thought they would never return. They used to be across from Palama Supermarket by Don Quijote. I'm surprised it gets busy at this new location. When I first tried their steak roll, I didn't like it because the potatoes inside were hard. The flavor wasn't that good either. We ordered the steak roll ($13~). I tried it again at this location, and I think the cooking tastes better. The steak was cooked just right. The potatoes were soft. There was a choice of brown rice which I loved! It also came with salad and a sauce for the steak. We asked for onion chips but they forgot. It's actually kind of common that they forget. It may take a while to cook when it gets busy because it's freshly cooked. read more

For months their old location was one of Kristine and my favorite places to grab a simple, savory, and cheap dinner. We were both sad when they closed, but happy they're back and re-branded Teppanyaki Farmer! Located inside Ala Moana's new Lanai (basically a second food court area), it's easy to get to at the Macy's end of the mall from any level. The entire food court area is clean, bright and new. TF is located in the makai/Ewa corner, right next to the restroom hallway. The menu is short and simple; meat on rice with vegetables or salad. The counter is open and protected by glass so you can see the grill and watch everything sizzle. The staff here was nice, but not overly friendly. The meat handlers still looked like they were getting comfortable while on stage. Prices here have noticeably increased since the move, but it's still a cheaper meal for the quality of the meat and size of portions. Be sure to check your sauces before leaving, ours were wrong on the last visit. If eating in, there are plenty of tables. Drinks are available for purchase as well. Everything is made fresh, so be prepared to wait. We were happy with the amount of food and freshness of everything; you'll be full but not in a guilty way. We're both happy to have our teppanyaki back! read more

Boneless Kalbi is cooked ahead of time, and kept in a food warmer. When you order your plate, you get the preheated meat that's been sitting for who knows how long. The kalbi was so overwhelmingly salty from the shoyu, that I had to drink nearly 2 bottles of water afterwards. Such a waste of money. read more
