Walked into the food court not looking for anything in particular and this place caught my eye. To be straight forward, it's hands down the best steak plate I've ever had in my life. Decent food. Long wait. Good service. We went there at noon on a Saturday. It's located in the new Lanai section of Ala Moana mall across from Macy's. Waited in line for about 6-7 minutes which gave me a chance to study the menu. It's basically, Steak Rolls, Steak Wraps or Steak Bowls. We got one of each to try. The Steak Roll is thinly sliced steak that they cook on a flat iron grill then they wrap the steak around julienned cut potatoes that is also cooked on the flat iron grill. It's served with your choice of white or garlic rice and a small side of salad. We thought the dish was ok. The potatoes were undercooked which made it a bit hard. The steak itself was pretty plain. The Kali Wrap - Boneless kalbi, tomatoes, cheese and your choice of potatoes or rice. On that day they ran out of potatoes for the wraps so I got garlic rice. Once again, it was just ok. The steak was slightly dry and plain in flavor. The cheese, tomatoes and rice were a bit weird together. The Kalbi bowl - Boneless kalbi ribs, your choice of white or garlic rice and choice if garlic chips, wasabe sauce or house spicy sauce. Nothing to write home about. Thinly cut steak was a bit dry and not much flavor. Good garlic rice and garlic chips. They were busy and we waited 20 minutes to get our food. Usually this is my go to for the steak roll, but the last time I went, the meat was so over cooked and dry. I bought for guests for dinner and they never tried it before, but I was so embarrassed to have served them the plate! They struggled finishing it and lied and said it was good, when it tasted like dried beef jerky crap to me. Even the potatoes are cut bigger now. Typical place that is now taking short cuts on what was once a good dish and turning it into a dish that is no longer desirable! Also, now if you pay with a card, you have to select the amount of tip you want to leave or no tip. They never asked before, but I guess now they feel that their high prices are not enough. This practice is actually very very rude! Leave a jar out and if anyone wants to leave a cash tip, they may. The food is 5 stars every time! Only place I can find pork or steak rolled around shredded potato. Kalbi is full of flavor. Service is more miss than hit tho. Similar complaint as I've read in other reviews. The cashier that I have 4 out of 5 times just doesn't seem to understand simple requests and is rude when you ask for a modification. I was a server and understand how a bunch of substitutions can be annoying or some ingredients are more costly than others. My request was simple. I asked for the lettuce in the side compartments and the rice under the meat instead. No idea why they normally put the hot meat on a bed of lettuce in the first place. Unlike cabbage which is often cooked, who wants wilted lettuce??? And it's not just for decoration or to soak up the oils, the menu says the plate comes with "tossed greens". Cashier did not understand my request, then after repeating myself 4x, she was rude and sighed like it was such a big deal to switch the placement of the lettuce and rice. I've remembered to make this simple request at least 5x and got the same response the 4x I had the same cashier, like she's never heard that request before. Once I had a different cashier it wasn't an issue. Today my fiancee went to get our food and the same thing happened. But this time she charged him $0.15 to put the lettuce in a separate container. It's almost comical that she STILL doesnt understand I just want the placement of the rice and lettuce switched, that's all! He didn't want to keep talking to her so he paid the $0.15. Been going since they opened at The Lanai and pretty sure it's the same as Tae's that was by Palama Market. 4 stars overall because service is less important to me for take out than dining in. Boneless Kalbi is cooked ahead of time, and kept in a food warmer. When you order your plate, you get the preheated meat that's been sitting for who knows how long. When I found out Tae's infamous steak rolls were being served up at Ala Moana, I immediately thought of my boyfriend. I personally never had Tae's but I know he would always talk about that place. We had just finished up at the Apple Store and decided to head here for dinner! We arrived at around 6:30pm and surprisingly, there was a very short line! (literally, 2 people were in front of me!) We quickly ordered 2 steak rolls, one with garlic rice, garlic chips, and wasabi sauce (+$0.50 for 2 toppings) and one with white rice & garlic chips. I was so excited to finally try this place! We waited around 10 minutes for our food to be made. Once we got our plates, I could barely contain myself! I had gotten the steak roll with garlic chips and white rice while the boyfriend got a steak plate with garlic chips & wasabi sauce (extra $0.50 since he selected 2 toppings) with garlic rice. At $13 per plate, I thought the price was okay. The serving size was enough for me but definitely not enough for the boyfriend. It came with 5 slices of thinly sliced beef stuffed with potato strings. I looooved how thin the steak was cut and how the potato skins were just a bit cooked so it added a nice crunch! I really enjoyed the ponzu sauce it came with! It was sooo flavorful! I used the whole container and drenched by steak in it. The salad it came with was also delicious. The dressing was a sesame dressing. Within 5 minutes, the boyfriend's plate was gone and within 10 mines was too. Once we were done eating, at around 7pm, the line was about 15 people deep! What a difference 30 minutes made! I guess we had the perfect timing! :) Again, I'm soooo glad I finally got to try Tae's infamous steak rolls and it was delicious! But, at $13 a plate and having to spend another $10 at Brug getting pastries to fill up my boyfriend's still hungry stomach, I don't think I would go out of my way to come here. Hawai'i is expensive as it is, so to leave the Lanai Food Court still hungry after a $13+ plate did not make this girl too thrilled haha. I kept the 4th star on my review because the ingredients are "locally available farm fresh products." We are paying for quality, not for transport costs from the mainland or Asia. If I'm feeling exxxxtra wealthy and truly wanted to treat myself to a *light* lunch, I would return, which is rare. Great portion size for the lunch plates. We bought 1 kalbi plate and one steak plate. Friends have told us that one must explicitly order garlic chips if you want garlic chips. So make sure you order it and it shows on your receipt; it's a free add on but you won't get it unless you make it known that you want it. Although steak was visually balanced, where each cut strip has a nice section of fat, flavor was a bit lacking. Doesn't seem to be marinaded or anything. Whatever seasoning they sprinkled during frying didn't amount to anything. So dip the included ponzu sauce to get some taste. Tae's Teppanyaki is back! They used to be located across from Palama Supermarket and after my first time there, I wanted to go back --- only to find out they were closed 2 weeks later.... Fast forward 2 years later and TA-DA Teppanyaki Farmer is born! They are one of the busiest places located in the Lanai; lunch time is of course prime time so expect a bit of a wait. It's nice to be able to see that they're cooking your meal fresh behind the glass! I got to try the Pork Roll w/ Garlic Rice and the Kalbi Bowl w/ Egg. The roll is just how I remembered it 2 years ago and now that you have an option to add sauces (spicy and wasabi), it ups the flavor intake SO much. I really appreciate this improvement. They even have ketchup at the pick-up counter now! The complementary ponzu sauce is good too but i.m.o it doesn't add much flavor. The garlic rice seemed more like a fried rice (not much garlic flavor) but I still enjoyed it. The Kalbi was well marinated but got a bit salty after a while. You also get to choose how you want your egg cooked. I'm really glad to see they improved since and I really hope to see them stay. read more

Unpopular opinion alert! I wanted to try something different last night so I went to this place and ordered a steak roll which seems to be the most popular choice based on so many reviews here. Normally, I wouldn't leave a critical review but... I agree with all of the lower star reviews because it is all hype and overpriced... nothing else. The stars are only for the cold beverage, fresh white rice, and the presentation but that's where it ends. There were three topping choices: garlic chips, wasabi sauce, and spicy sauce. I chose the garlic chips and I agree with a review that is on the not recommended page for some odd reason. That reviewer is right because it did taste bitter. I think it's like marinated garlic that was cooked and freeze dried. Or maybe marinated garlic that has been freeze dried? Also, the steak roll was small and it felt more like a steak salad than anything else. There was also shoestring potatoes underneath the steak roll and unless Ponzu sauce was added to it, then there is no flavor. Actually, the basic foundations of seasoning, salt and pepper, are completely non-existent. The steak was tender but very blahhhhh and bland unless the Ponzu sauce was poured on it. It seems like the Ponzu sauce was really necessary for this whole meal to have flavor. Without it, it's just luxury hospital food. Also, I wish there was salad dressing available because plain salad is boring. So, if you want to burn a hole in your wallet or trash your credit card (which I did and spent almost $17 for dinner last night), go ahead. I've been a fan for over 15 years, since Tae's Teppanyaki days over by (then) Daiei, now Don Quixote. Really inventive steak rolls which are filled with ribboned raw potato, thin strips of meat on the outside. I usually get the garlic chips sprinkled on top. Served with rice and salad. I like the satellite food court where it's located at Ala Mo'. I've thought of trying the other places nearby but I always seem to end up choosing Teppanyaki Farmer. Have not tried their other dishes because I like the steak roll so much! This is an often rearing idiosyncrasy of mine - finding one dish and sticking with it. When I found out this place opened, I knew I had to come here as I've been craving Tae's steak rolls for years now. The line was kind of long but I only had to wait like 15-20 min and it was so worth it. I got the steak roll (several layers of grilled thin slices of steak with grilled thin strings of potatoes inside), with garlic rice, and the wasabi sauce on the side and garlic chips (obviously!). I also got a guava juice. At first bite, I was sooo happy, it was delicious! I loved the garlic rice too! It wasn't too oily or garlicky.. the taste was on point. I ordered and maybe 1-2 minutes later I was diving into my delicious dinner. I got the number 15, it's a bowl with rice and meat. As soon as I opened the bowl the aroma of delicious beef hit me in the face and it was amazing! The meal was a good portion and the taste was very, very good. I am trying to cut out unnecessary carbs so the burrito wasn't the healthiest option BUT I think this should be thought of as a decadent splurge. It took awhile to get my food but I'll stand in line again. Boneless kalbi bowl was good. Meat tasted good and garlic sprinkle tasted yummy. I had garlic rice and I liked it a lot. There was lots if rice so I couldn't finish but I was happy that I choose garlic rice. My mouth had garlic smell but it was just a casual day so it was ok. My husband had steak roll. Thin noodle like potato was cooked wrapped in beef. He choose spicy sauce. I liked it but it was little spicy for him. The plate had one scoop of rice, salad and cabbage under the beef roll. It was good but it'll be better if the cabbage was shredded thinner, like the tonkatsu's cabbage. Staffs were working hard, non stop and well organized. Came here with my wife, and the experience was very good! The Service was good, no delays, and they were able to deliver the food after 5mn. Pretty impressive! The staff was cool, but I did not get any special recommendation from them. So looking at the menu, I had the number 11, the sandwich Ribeye Cheesteack. All of the ingredients were very good quality. My wife had the garlic shrimp scampi #15 The shrimp was delicious! I had to wash down the rest of it with the rice that was included and a soda. Not exactly Tae's Teppanyaki quality but it'll do. Since three full food courts exist at Ala Moana, I would recommend to do a little digging around cause there are a lot more choices around. read more

There was also a little longer wait time than usual, because my dining companion ordered the shrimp scampi which needed a little more time (since I think they had just run out and needed to make another batch). Went here the other night and ordered the steak roll, which came highly recommended. Unfortunately, the beef was dry, like eating a piece of tree bark. None of it was seasoned except for a spot on one end of the "roll". The "angel hair" cut potatoes under the beef were gloppy, with all the character of a wet mop head made of boiled potato. I asked for garlic chips and wasabi sauce. Garlic chips were okay, a little burnt. The wasabi sauce didn't mesh well with the beef. I found myself wishing the ponzu sauce was au jus. With the ponzu, however, the plate would have all been uninspiring. On the plus side, service was pleasant and friendly, the meal presentation was on point. Two stars for the food and one extra for service and presentation. If this were a culinary student presentation, I'd give it a C+. I might go back, but there are so many other places to eat in The Lanai that chances are I wouldn't. read more

The staff was really friendly and took the time to recommend some things to me, so I decided to go with the number 16- New York Steak plate. The plate came with two scoops of rice (brown or white), steak cooked to the temp you like and placed on a bed of romaine lettuce.. to top that off, they put garlic chips on top of the steak and give you some kind of dipping sauce which is so good. Despite so many great choices at The Lanai food court, I gravitate to Teppanyaki Farmer over and over because of their delicious kalbi bowl - especially with an egg on top! The creaminess of an easy over egg pairs so well with the sweet and salty beef, and then you get that pungent crunch of those fried garlic slices - that's like Hawaii in your mouth right there with all the different flavors and textures blending together. When I'm feeling brave I'll actually sit down to eat - preferably at one of the outside tables. They've cordoned off the dining space so that you can only enter after filling out a form with your contact information - I'm assuming so they can reach you in case a diner or a worker tests positive. The workers are also constantly wiping down surfaces - while the CDC currently says fomite transmission is not the primary means of infection, it's still a comforting sight to see the staff diligent about cleaning. read more
