5 Stars, partly because they deserve more than 3.5 stars and adjusting expectations for comparable quality in the area. Overall I would this place deserves a 4 to 4.5 star rating, 4.5 if they stopped overcooking some of their meats in some of the dons. I think overall price is good, and a great option for rice bowl style food that hasn't been filled in Merced. My favorites are the NY Steak don (med-rare) and Unagi don, with the ginger beef don a close contender. What helps tremendously is their sauces which are very good. The chicken burgers are also quite nice, surprisingly even with delivery, though with all fried items, fresh is better but which is sometimes unavoidable during these times. Some of these cheaper more basic bowls are not as good and sometimes I feel like they overcook some of their meat in the bowls. Flavor is generally good on some items, but can be improved on the more basic bowls, but their sauce does help make up for it. Overall I recommend trying the NY steak, Unagi don and their fried chicken burgers. These feel a cut above the rest. Make sure to get the NY steak med-rare as that really ends up as a medium, and everything above seems to be well done. read more

Been here a few times. And tonight was the first time I had big chunks of raw carrots and broccoli which were pretty hard to eat. and I've ordered the beef teriyaki which was today's special. It was too overcooked and cut along the grain. I've included a picture with arrows showing the grain and how to cut it against the grain. Overcooked beef flank(or skirt) cut along the grain is pretty tough to eat. It will be easier to eat if it was cut against the grain along the arrows I've drawn in the picture I've included. Hope the manager or senior cooks see this and make some adjustments and train the others on how to do that. Otherwise, it seems like the teriyaki sauce recipe was back to normal unlike the last time which tasted like they used vanilla corn syrup to make it. read more

We had a very !!!!!!! unpleasant experience as we were accused by the manager of stealing soda....extremely embarrassing to be honest with you! Since she walked to my table to confront me about my husband stealing her $2 dollar soda. I purchased $50 worth of food that included 2 refillable sodas, I do not drink soda myself, one was for my husband one was for my nine year old. I decided to pour OUNCES, of soda in a "water cup" FROM MY HUSBANDS CUP ( NOT FROM THE MACHINE) so my Toddler twins could have a sip a sip!!!! since they were crying about us not letting them drink soda late........yes I poured literally ounces of my soda for a 4 year old twins..... like how much soda can a toddler drink??? 3 sips???? The manager walks to my table to tell me I need to pay another soda because she saw my husband filling out the "water cups" with soda....from the machine!!! That she had cameras.....and she saw him! NOT TRUE!!!!!!!!!!!! Look at your cameras and confirm that your "water cups" were filled in my own table. If I have two large soda cups that I can refill 3..4 ..5 times how I'm I stealing your soda ?? for pouring ounces of OUR soda.???????? My husband did pay for a 3rd soda because he is a nice person and we don't like to argue, but it was absolutely ridiculous. 3.5 It's affordable and fast. Low grade donburi. Although, it's not really donburi. Spicy chicken, everyone's favorite, tastes better when it's fresh out the kitchen. Unagi is too chewy and with soggy skin and sauce it becomes inedible. Do not recommend. Prefer to sit down and eat. I like the burgers most even though the patties are flavorless and saucy. Probably more than the bowls. Sushi tastes like supermarket sushi. Overall, solid chain joint. You get used to it if you're from the CV and not from a city with a lot of Japanese restaurants. What's the point of having waitresses if it's already a self serve establishment. They simply cannot serve you terriyaki sauce with the order or sauce on the side. If you want sauce you'll have to walk your Rear to the back of the restaurant. Salad dressing is mayo ofcourse. Not my ideal place to get chicken over rice when I can make that at home. read more

It's what I would expect from a Japanese fast food type place. I don't feel like it's overpriced for what you get. They always have a daily special, like - ginger chicken over rice with a side salad for under $7. The food is on the bland side but that's ok, Just add some sauce. It's a meal for $7. I'm so disappointed :( My boyfriend and I usually order from here and it's always been good but this time was a complete disappointment. The california roll was warm with browning avocado and flavorless crab. The portions were small too and the roll jam packed with rice :/ We also requested no salad with our meals and we still got salad. Great concept, horrible execution. We ordered two bowls and sushi. The sushi was worse than gas station sushi. Gas station sushi looks better than what is served here. They took our three plates separately. The sushi was given to us first, within ten minutes of ordering. The first bowl about ten minutes later and the third one was served about 45 minutes after ordering. About 8 people that ordered after us got all of their at the same time before we did. The chicken and the beef were bland. It tasted like they didn't even use salt to season them. Their so called house dressing tasted like diluted mayo. I couldn't believe the quality of the meat used and the steps they took to season and cook it, especially with the price being so low for an 'order at the counter restaurant.' I found this place on Groupon and decided to try it out. The groupon was $12 for two $10 vouchers so at the restaurant the total left to pay was only 22 cents! I had the teriyaki and shrimp ten don combo and it was great, I even loved the spinach salad with house dressing. My friend had the double don burger and it was so juicy, full of flavor, I'll get that next time or the ramen. The prices were very reasonable, definitely will be going there again! read more

I give this place a 3 star because it's not as great compared to other places who can offer the same price for better food quality. My friends and I came here for the first time and we would probably not be coming back for a while. For instance, the rice portion and protein wasn't proportional. My friends also mentioned that their beef was quite dry and the chicken katsu wasn't crispy at all. Not sure if it's because they barely opened but it's good to try out. On the other hand, customer service is great since they provide table service. I would like to give this place a second chance and I'll definitely update this review when I do have the chance. I just don't like them asking for a tip when I pay for using a credit card and kinda got talked into giving fifteen percent which came out to eight bucks. In the COVID world, foods that still taste good when delivered (including if your driver is slow/late and it gets cold) is important. Unfortunately, that means that many of the best items on their menu, like the spicy chicken, just don't taste their best. Still, They have decent food at a good price and decent vegetarian options.
