I've been to this Spring Branch location of Teriyaki Kitchen since they first opened. It's a little hole-in-the-wall Korean/Japanese restaurant that's hidden and a bit isolated from the main Koreatown area of Houston. It's run by a super nice, old Korean couple, and the quality of the foods and service have always been consistent. I usually get one of the teriyaki plates, the katsu plates, or the bento, but they also have different noodles, curry, and fried rice available. You can choose your choice of rice/noodles/sides. On my most recent visit for a quick dinner for two, we got the beef teriyaki plate and the pork katsu plate with curry, and both dishes were delicious. I've been here a couple of times and haven't tried anything besides their grilled teriyaki chicken plate. The chicken is grilled to perfection & then glazed with a rich & savory, sweet soy-based sauce. They also have spicy options. For the base, you have options between white, brown or fried rice. I've had both the white & brown rice and it's been great all times (yes, there is such thing as bad rice). As for sides; your options are potato salad, steamed veggies or broccoli. If you order to-go, ask them not to put the potato salad with the rest of the meal (unless you don't mind hot potato salad lol). I can't say enough about that potato salad, it almost carries the meal. I would also like to note that this is a small establishment so there's not a whole lot of seating arrangements. This has become our new favorite go to spot for some Asian food. We really like their Spicy Teriyaki chicken, it's packed with flavored the chicken is cooked to perfection sweet and spicy. The beef udon was a little underwhelming. It was packed it with more udon noodles with a thin top layer for beef, which was disappointing. Beef was flavorful however, I just wish there was MORE of it. The special fried rice is your combination rice of beef and chicken mixed nothing different from your usual fried rice that you get from there. First, the less-than-attractive: Happened upon this place while doing a lunch search on Yelp - katsu, eh? So I called in a pick up order for the pork katsu plate. "Something shdjdkdks something shfjskksks something," the woman who answered spat out super quickly. Girl, you in a rap battle or sump'n? I asked whether she could repeat it slowly one more time. Oh, grilled veggies, potato salad, or cole slaw as a side? Gotcha. I opted for the potato salad. I was told 10 mins. I got there in 12 and was asked to wait 2 more mins, eventually getting my food in 16 mins. There were only 4 people in the restaurant at 1pm; maybe a giant party had exited before I got there, but they might want to pick up speed. I also heard the girl yell to the kitchen in Korean, "Dad, that's too much rice." I get it. Save the rice. But can't you at least not let us hear it? Now the good part: This katsu is going to give Izakaya Wa a run for its money. A pork cutlet the size of my whole hand comes with a side of plain rice (a decent amount, might I add - wasn't too skimpy) and a tiny kid's scoop worth of puréed potato salad (mixed with diced cukes and carrots, Korean/Japanese style, yum), and, most importantly, is delicious. The oil they cooked it in was fresh and didn't leave that nasty oil residue in the mouth that some tempura places cause. And at $9.20 pre-tip, you can bet your bottom dollar I'll be coming here often. My only feedback for the food: can you please add more cabbage on the bottom? This is originally-Japanese style katsu done the way Koreans do it in Korea. Granted it's cheaper in Korea, the one here is also huge in size. It's all relative. Anyway, as I said, I'll be coming back. I just hope they become a little bit more customer-minded. But for a relatively new place of 6-ish months - the food was good! 5 stars for food in its class and cute decor, 1 star docked for the staff. read more
