Just found out about this place from Yelp a few days ago and immediately wanted to check it out. Unfortunately, upon seeing there is a new donut place with fresh made donuts with tons of flavor combinations, my first reaction was to compare it to Duck Donuts. That being said, I had some expectations when we walked in. The place was clean and organized and the staff was friendly. However I was a little disappointed that the donuts were all pre-made in a glass display shelf rather than the customer being able to customize their own donut. This Texas Donuts appeared in a magazine article titled, "The Best Donut in Every State" and was the one listed for the state of Virginia. Hence, it just had to be tried. I had a cinnamon roll and found it to be light, airy, and with enough cinnamon to taste it. The coffee was fro illy, which is was unusual to me for a donut shop; but, it was also good, but, as the sign says "No free refills". I then ask the sales person what was the best selling product and she said the "Cronut" (i.e., a cross between a croissant and a donut, but more like a donut). Always dry or stale tasting even when they're "fresh". I don't mind going there for coffee but for donuts...no! This place is the only place I'll go to. My weekend trek to Krispy Kreme in Manassas changed when I tried the donuts in this place. If you like the types of donuts served at Krispy Kreme and Dunkin, I think donuts from this place is a better choice. Donuts are not as sweet as the ones in Krispy Kreme, and they don't have that weird after-taste like the Dunkin Donuts. The place doesn't charge you extra if you want the cinnamon donuts, bacon maple donuts, or your non-standard donuts (minus the cronuts), and they are DEFINITELY cheaper when you buy a dozen of assorted donuts when compared to the other two places (KK and DD). read more

This place has a lot of variety, and the doughnuts taste great. I was able to try the apple fritters - which unfortunately didn't have much apple and was loaded with cinnamon, the cronuts- which had a great texture with a bit of a chew but greasier than most doughnuts, and the Boston cream - standard custard filled. They put filling in the donuts when you order. They have Custard, lemon curd, rasberry and strawberry. We asked which was the most tart and was suggested rasberry and boy was it filled! Sooooo good and they didn't skimp on jelly They don't really have trendy over the top donuts here other than the giant glazed or sprinkled. A Texan Paradise! I never thought I'd say that about a donut shop until I realized kolaches were only a Texan thing... Although the kolaches aren't the same you'll find in Texas (typical Texan hubris I know), they're pretty damn close to the real thing. These sausage and jalapeño kolaches are a little sweeter than what you might find in Texas. The donuts are worth a try if you're not into kolaches. The shop will theme their donuts depending on what holiday is coming up which is pretty cool. The only reason that this is getting below 5 stars is because of the kolaches being a little sweet and not being truly "Texan" as a result. Definitely a highly recommend to anyone looking for breakfast on the weekend or being a good employee and bringing some Texas joy into the office! read more

Back story - san antonio Texas holds my donut vote hands down...they have a place near my brother's house that sells the PERFECT yeast donuts (shout out to SUPER DONUTS). So, i had high hopes and was VERY excited to find out that TEXAS DONUTS opened very close to home now. Not gonna lie - devoured about half a dozen of their light, sweet, cloud-esque glazed donut holes. They literally melt in your mouth! We then ordered two norma sized donuts - strawberry ices and cookies and cream. The icing was awesome. The donut itself was very very light, just the right amount of sweet and fluff! These donuts are not heavy at all, even if they are yeasty. They also offer a few seasonal flavors, like pumpkin spice cake donuts and halloween themes donuts. They had a ghost decorated and a Frankenstein decorated donut and there were so cute. They ALSO sell KOLACHES (another Texan staple). Cheddar and Jalapeno. They are like the german corndog :D try them - you won't regret it! As a donut connoisseur (for the love of fried dough), i do love a variety of "gourmet" donuts with caramel, bacon and all the a fancy flavors and toppings that seems to be popping up all over the city - but nothing beats a simply, delicious, glazed donuts (and KOLACHES!). What can I say, other than WOW! The donuts here are phenomenal. I would tell you my favorite flavor, but every time I try something different I think, "that's my new favorite!!" Everything is always fresh, fluffy, and light. I would say that Texas Donuts is better than Dunkin', but it feels like an insult to even compare the two. Dunkin' Donuts doesn't hold a candle to this place. Special shout out to the amazing staff and owner. Annie is always a delight to talk to-- she is so friendly and takes the time to get to know all her regular customers (and there are a lot of them! It just proves how great Texas Donuts is). I love these donuts. I try new donut shops wherever I travel and none of them ever measure up to Texas Donuts. They aren't particularly fancy, and there isn't a huge variety, but they are so fresh and soft and delicious. The texture of the yeast-raised donuts is particularly good. I'd say to skip the cake donuts, they are OK but not of the same quality as their raised donuts. The kolaches are also really great! I once had an incredible apple fritter in Houston, TX. Best I ever had. That was maybe 3 years ago. The fritters at Texas Donuts are a match for that one! We came in here 20 minutes before they closed and all the other reviewers were right- the workers are super nice!! Donuts here are the real deal. I'd rather come here over Sugar Shack, Fractured Prune or Duck Donuts on any given day. We got a dozen of mixed donuts that included: regular glaze, chocolate iced, blueberry, strawberry filled, bavarian filled, strawberry iced, and oreo. All were SOOO GOOD! My favorite though was the regular glaze, bavarian, and strawberry filled. They also do lemon filled donuts as well and have maple, maple with bacon and vanilla iced donuts. Virginia finally has a place where you can buy a kolache instead of spending hours making them yourself (but if you want to do the latter, I suggest the recipe printed by the Houston Chronicle, best I've found since my time away)! The donuts are also WAY better than Dunkin. On a scale of Shipleys to Hruskas (Texans know what I'm talking about) their kolaches are solidly in the middle, in Kolache Factory territory. They only have meat kolaches, but let's be honest, that's what most of us are craving anyway. The people who work there were also nice and they "get" it.
