Thai Cafe saved my life. No, literally. For a brief period last year, a twice-weekly injection of its vegetarian duck was all that stood between me and time between white walls and fluorescent lights with doctors with soft, reassuring voices. The garlicky, savory sauce-coated peppers and onions, the crisp yet giving flesh of the "duck", the warm, sticky comfort of the rice; together, each time, took my hand and walked me lovingly back from the precipice. I can't speak for the other dishes there, because I haven't eaten them. But the duck alone is easily enough to earn Thai Cafe my eternal gratitude and of course my wholehearted stamp of approval. read more

I had an overwhelming craving for Thai food, while driving back from my mom house I spotted this place and decided to give it a try. Upon entering I was greet my the host. I stated I wanted a take out order and was giving a menu. My favorite Thai dish is Shrimp Pad Thai so I already knew what I wanted. I also decided on an appetizer, I decided to try something different so I order crab rolls with plum sauce. After placing my order and while waiting I checked out the dining area, which had a nice & cozy kind of feel to it. This restaurant isn't big I would say nice and cozy lol. While waiting for my order the hostess offered me a glass of water, which I thought was cool. The kitchen is fairly small and you can actually see into the kitchen from the waiting area. The kitchen looked really clean as did the rest of the restaurant. The prices are fair, my entree with about $9.00 and my app was $5.00. This restaurant is cash only. The food smelled really good in the car so I couldn't wait to get home to eat. The food didn't not disappoint, those crab rolls were soooooo good as was the Shrimp Pad Thai. I'm a fan and will definitely eat from here again whenever I'm in Brooklyn. read more

Mediocre thai food. I live so close by, so when I'm really craving thai, it's the easiest option. I've eaten a few different things from the pad see ew to the green curry to the duck basil. Everything is pretty disappointing. Rubbery chicken in the curry, too much fat in the duck basil, etc. The only thing I order from here now is the pad thai because you can only go so wrong with pad thai. Then again, I always order it spicy now, so it masks whatever's lacking to begin with. In greenpoint, we have slim pickings when it comes to thai food. And it's cash only, which can be a pain. I thought about grabbing some thai on the way home from NYSC tonight and realized I only had a card... Had to just skip it and continued home to cook instead. Guess it's a good thing. read more

Quick and polite service can't make up for the low quality food. The fried Calamari appetizer was very dry and the flesh was exceptionally tough and skimpy. The dipping sauce was too entirely too thick and the flavor profile basically just "sweet". The Pad Thai was little more than a bowl of smelly noodles with a pinch of shredded carrot, a cilantro leaf, and a few peanuts. There was little sauce, chicken, or vegetables to be found and the little there was bland and of low quality. Given there are four mediocre Thai restaurants on Manhattan Ave I am unlikely to chose this, the worst of them, especially since they are cash only. read more

First off, I state that I have been coming here since about 1995. Back then I'd say the food was much better than recent years. I feel it can be attributed to the "changing" of the chefs. This review is for my more recent experiences. Wait staff: Lets see, they are always friendly and have been attentive when i needed something. Food: here is the big issue. I am a big Pad Thai person. This time around the pad Thai was not as flavorful as it used to be. The noodles seemed a little rushed so that the customers don't have to wait for the food. I'd prefer they slow down a little and properly season/cook it. Appetizer: Spicy Chicken wings - These were still pretty tasty, so I can't complain. Appetizer: Fried Calamari - This was a toss up, sometimes it was pretty good, other times it was only mediocre. What can I say? Drink: Thai Ice tea - one of my favorite drinks. great strong tea flavor mixes well with the sweet condensed milk. Atmosphere: Well, as always, the ever changing art is still very nice. Love the fact that local artists were able to display their talents on the walls. Almost something new to look at every visit. Price: Well, this goes without saying, its not going to break the bank. With so many starving artist in the area, its no wonder they have kept pricing fairly low. Over the past 15 years, the prices have not gone up too much, so its safe to take a date for a decent meal. I love this place. In spite of more than doubling in size over the last fifteen years, the prices have only increased moderately from the time that I first got take out from there. (back in 1995) The kitchen is the first thing you see upon entering and all cooking is done in full view using fresh ingredients. The only two things I would say that could improve the place is if: a) they just up and got rid of the would-be sushi table. it was a bad idea and we need never speak of it again b) take credit/debit cards Other than that, I can't really think of what I would want to see changed. Waitstaff is occasionally a little flaky, but that is true of almost every restaurant on Earth. I highly recommend this place and continue to eat there on a pretty regular basis. I don't understand the bad review from 3/22, might have been a different Thai place. There are four on Manhattan Ave. One is just two blocks down the avenue (the delis around here mostly suck, btw) Thai Cafe is the best and most affordable by a long shot. But I didn't like this place. I went this afternoon for lunch and shared green curry and pad thai with my girlfriend and her sister and sister's husband. Portion sizes were good enough for the four of us, but the flavor was off. The green curry was spicy, but didn't have much other flavor and the pad thai was a little tangy for my liking. Yes, I said tangy. Pad thai is not supposed to be tangy. In general, I'm in agreement with Noah N. Maybe it was just the food they made today, but I don't think I'd give Thai Cafe a second chance. I was having a crap day on Friday so I decided to treat myself with some solo tasty Thai food. An employee caught me looking at the menu in the window and came out to hand me a takeout menu, and I pleasantly surprised him when I said I'd be dining in. Since it was early (about 5:45 pm) I had my pick of tables, and chose one facing the street corner. Perfect for people watching. The table sat 4, so I had plenty of room for my bags, and my giant September issue of Elle. My server promptly brought me the menu and a glass of water. I ordered one of the daily special apps, a whole wheat tortilla wrap filled with spicy tofu, avocado, tomato and red onion, with some sweet/spicy sauce. For my main course I ordered the veggie duck curry. I also got an iced Jasmin green tea. Everything was super tasty. So tasty that I ate EVERYTHING. Like I said, I was having a crap day, so I was totally eating my feelings. But hey, at least it was relatively healthy and super tasty, right? Anyways, my server was very nice, and great about refilling my water, and I really enjoyed the food. The only hiccup occurred when it was time to pay. I honestly thought that I had a $20 and a $1 in my wallet, but the $20 turned out to be be a $10. So embarrassed! However, my server was super nice and told me that there was an ATM at The Garden grocery store across the street, and said she'd watch my bags while I ran over there. A quick trip to the ATM and everything was sorted. So yeah, kinda sucks that they're cash only, but at least they were nice about it. Will definitely eat/order from here again. read more

Two years ago I would have delivered 5 stars, now 4 is where stand. This place remains a local gem, although going through some sort of transition since summer. Favorites remain the fried tofu appetizer, (peanut chili sauce with lime on the side is a perfecct match. Noodle with beef and broccoli (they will substitute shrimp if you ask), garlic shrimp, or my favorite special the grilled salmon atop mango sald. The thai iced tea is a must for me, a cross between an iced tea with milk and chai. Prices are amazingly low, and serving size varies by the chef. Worth every penny. read more

This place is the epitome of inconsistency. I've been here 5 times, the first time wasn't that good so I decided to try it a second time, and it was awesome. 3rd time, bad, 4th good and so on. The service is good one day and crappy another day. I suspect the same with the cooks. I've tried the fried spring rolls twice, they were pretty good. The dipping sauce is awesome. I had the Pad Thai which is pretty good, not the best but not the worst. I've also tried Pad see ew and it was good when they used rice noodles but when I tried it again with the wide egg noodles, it was terrible. The noodles were soggy and overcooked and the sauce was inconsistenty distributed. My favorite overall was the Spicy Thai Basil noodles(Rice, not egg noodles). It was very good, cooked perfectly, and fullfilling. This place gives pretty good portions but could be better. I do find it better than OTT across the street but Amarin cafe further down toward Nassau is the best Thai place in G'Point hands-down. Overall, not bad, it'll do when we want quick Thai. However, its definitely not the best and I probably will only use it for take-out/delivery from now on. read more

Haven't had anything but the Shrimp or Chicken Pad Thai from here--it is amazing!! The only reservation that I have about this restaurant is that it has been closed by the health department. They also changed the portion size recently and upped the prices on the food. If I'm craving a good Pad Thai I come to this place. read more

I sat in the corner next to a now-defunct door that had its cracked silicone seal patched with packing tape. It was making a huge humming sound due to the arctic gale that was screaming through the gaps in the filthy tape and aged glue. The food was lukewarm and relatively flavorless. Used to love their fresh spring rolls years ago, served with spring onion and mustard. But yesterday, they were stuffed more than half with wilted bean sprouts. Plus shrimp, tofu, and kielbasi?? Strange spring rolls, and not fresh. Fried calamari with dipping sauce was still light, crisp, and yummy. Though the garnish lettuce was wilted. I appreciate the noisy kitchen feel of the dining room. As well as the changing show of local artwork. Though the artwork today was, mm, not good. Also, the cafe seems to touch up paint between shows. But couldn't they spring for a little spackle to fill in the holes first? Great windows though, still a good spot to people watch pedestrians. I confess I'm not an expert on Asian food but this is certainly my favorite Thai place in all of New York. The food tends to be lighter and not served with heavy thick sauces, so it's a fresher kind of Thai than I am used to trying. Often I will eat the chicken with mixed vegetables and peanuts or chicken with basil, sometimes switching the former to vegetarian style. The fried tofu, (small portion of) chicken satay, fresh spring rolls (switched to vegetarian too to skip the dry sausage), and green papaya salad are all good starters. They also make excellent fried rice. I've tried the shrimp fried rice and different iterations of pineapple fried rice. I rarely eat noodle dishes and I don't eat curry but my friends seem to like both of these kinds of dishes just fine. In past years - I've been patronizing Thai Cafe since 1999 or so - they've had poached pears and other desserts but I haven't tried them in my last 20 visits or so. In all, the place is great and the only complaints I've heard is the valid one that the dining room can be cold so wear a sweater if that bothers you. Also, I think the place is cash only but there are five or so banks up Manhattan Avenue if needed. Parking is sometimes difficult but never on Sunday nights along Manhattan Avenue and the side streets. read more

Let me say right off, for those quickly skimming reviews, that this is -- hands down -- the BEST pad thai anywhere in the city. Unlike so many thai places who make the dish a cloying sweet goop or others who just oil the hell out of it, Thai Cafe understands the subtlety of this dish -- the delicate interaction of noodles, peanuts, vegetables, and fried egg. Order it extra dry and ask for a side of chile sauce and you're in business, brothers and sisters. This is the Real McCoy. I've been coming here since the late 90's, back when it had a little sister storefront restaurant on Bedford Ave in Williamsburg called Planet Thailand (later changed to PlanEAT Thailand because -- rumor had it -- there was some sort of copyright infringement). When Planeat Thailand blew up and moved around the corner to the big cavernous (now empty) space on North 7th that my friends and I dubbed the Death Star, Thai Cafe became the one and only go-to place again, and it still is. Not sure what's been going on with them lately. While the food here took a real dip a couple of years ago (during a period when they were also forced to close a couple of times by the DOH), the place has been back to it's consistent standards for a good long run now -- and yet -- the place doesn't have the crowds it once did, which makes me a little worried. If you haven't been in a while, it's worth revisiting. If you've never been, GO! Aside from the transcendent pad thai, other dishes not to miss: green papaya salad, vegetarian duck, and the peanut curry are all top notch. Used to be great but lost its magic touch. Food is so-so and ambiance is terrible. Used to have all kinds most horrible artwork/trash hanging on their walls. It was awesome! I haven't been back there for a while since I moved away. Seafood noodle was too salty and curry shrimp was too runny. Fried calamari wasn't crispy enough but sauce was good. When walking in we wanted to sit by the window instead of the dark corner they wanted to put us in. From then on our waitress was completely rude and acted like it was a problem for ordering food. They have electrical heaters put around the restaurant as they don't have their heat turned on. As i was finishing my noodle soup i pulled out a piece of plastic out of my mouth that was in the soup . I showed it to the waitress who then dropped it in my ice coffee. She stuck her finger in my coffee and pulled it out. Still charging me for it. All i can say is WOW read more

Whenever I come back to NYC for a visit, eating Thai food is a top priority for me (as there are no good options where I live now). Although the reviews for this particular Thai Cafe were mediocre, I decided to give it a try since it was close to where I'm staying. I ordered delivery and it was fast and efficient. However I was disappointed with the chicken pad Thai and spring rolls. They were both very dry. The pad Thai barely had any sauce on it and it was not very flavorful. The spring rolls also were not anything special. I also had the Thai beef salad and that was actually pretty good. I probably would not order from here again anytime soon. read more

This place used to be the bomb. It was the hip place in the neighborhood and it was hard to get a table. That was in 1994. Now, it's got TV's with the Food Network on all the time, no cool art on the walls {it used to display art by local artists} and sub-par food. The Pad Thai is to dry and flavorless. The curries are too watered-down. And the Thai Iced Tea has more ice than tea. A new owner has bought the place within the last 2 years and he came to ask about the food every 5 minutes.
