The menu is non-standard for a Thai restaurant, but I think this restaurant, again, is catering to the college crowd. All entrées come with rice, except the noodles, sides & appetizers. When you get to the front be ready to order ... if you asked him any questions, you might have a flashback to the Seinfeld episode of the soup N**i . We stopped into this joint to grab a quick bite. However, it's important to note that on weekends (especially dinner), it can get quite busy, and there might be a bit of a wait (even for takeout) One of my all-time favorites at Thai Canteen is the Pad See Ew. I usually go for the mild spice level, but occasionally venture into the medium range. However, I must admit that there is quite a gap in spiciness between the mild and medium options. So, if you're someone who enjoys a bit of heat, I would recommend going for the medium spice level or even higher. One thing I absolutely love about Thai Canteen is the generous portion sizes. The plates are loaded with noodles and enough of your chosen protein (chicken, tofu, beef, shrimp), making it perfect for sharing or even having leftovers for the next day. The sauce for most dishes are rich, flavorful, and perfectly complement the noodles and veggies. 3.5 stars (which is the average for this place) seems about right. It's decent food and it's at a fairly reasonable price. We've come here a few times now and the food is solid. Probably the best Thai food within walking distance of downtown (although to be honest, I'm not aware of another Thai restaurant in downtown Davis). The last time we came here was in early December 2022. We ordered fried chicken wings, pad Thai with shrimp, the pork belly rice plate, and the spicy, shrimp, rice plate. It's definitely a college town place. You order at the counter and they give you a number and you find your own table. Most of the dishes seem like they were meant for one person (lots of rice plates and noodle plates) although you can definitely share. I have to say, that the pad Thai in particular was really good when we last came. Really flavorful, the noodles were perfectly cooked, lots of prawns, etc. The chicken wings on the other hand didn't have much flavor (even with the dipping sauce). The pork belly rice plate was decent: I give it a B. And the spicy shrimp with rice was above average. I would give it a B+. There is a parking structure on the next street over that has always had spaces available. When the place is packed it gets very loud in the restaurant. You order your food at the register, get a number, find a table, and they bring your food to you. Water and a spice tray is self serve. I usually order Kang Kiow Wan which is eggplant, bell peppers and basil in green curry. You get a choice of protein. I get chicken. The food is average. Henry ordered first. He ordered something that i could only make out as "pad sew" (I am sorry about my spelling. Thai Canteen, I am a Thai Food noob) and Thai tea. And then, the cashier made eye contact with me and asked the daunting, "What will you like to order?". I racked my brain for the right words--PAD THAI PAD THAI PAD THAI--but instead, frantically turned over to Henry with a scared look desperately asking for assistance. Pad thai with beef and a Thai tea it was. We seated ourselves at a nice table overlooking black and white wall art of a suburban city. Cute. I chugged the sweet, atomic Thai tea like an animal! The food came out hot! But after a few minutes, I eagerly swirled my fork into the noodles, blew away the fire (there was no fire), and the silver plane of wonder soared into my mouth. Delicious. The first bite through the soft noodles releases the juices hiding inside this wonderful concoction, bringing joy to my hypothalamus as it releases ghrelin, indicating I am one step closer to becoming full. That said, their total disregard for in store customers was mind blowing as they prioritize online and delivery orders to the point of neglecting people who are there, in person, in line. We did find a loophole though. Call your order in, pick up at the counter and go have a seat. The delivery drivers also block the driveway regularly so tenants of the building can't get in or out of their assigned parking structure. Restaurant management does not care. read more

Such a staple spot in Davis! When I first moved this was the only spot me and my friends would come to haha. There is something so comforting about Thai food! I generally order the Kang Kari which is a yellow curry. Definitely not the best I've ever had, but satisfies the craving nevertheless. It comes with your choice of meat, carrots, potatoes, and a side of rice. I find the chicken to be kind of dry but I have become accustomed to ordering my curry with chicken through the years. The service is honestly pretty slow and the person who takes orders at the front is generally pretty unenthusiastic. They do get a lot of orders though, so anticipate about a 45-60 minute wait on busy nights. Menu shows what can be made vegan, vegetarian and gluten free. Safe for dairy and gluten intolerances, just tell them to do glove change and clean areas used for your order in kitchen. Celiac safety unsure, but they were very nice when I mentioned my allergy to a food item. I had no reaction, meaning there was no cross contamination on my dish. Owner and managers should be proud of kitchen staff and their cross contaminative procedures. Just know it is Thai! and spice levels tend to be higher! I've been to the Thai Canteen in both Sac and Davis. For some reason the one in Davis seems to taste better. I normally get it to go and this location really packs a LOT in your to go box which I love. The food also comes very hot and fresh. I got the Chicken Pad Thai and it tastes amazing with the lime juices all over it. I also got a thai tea which tasted perfect to me. I don't like my thai teas super sweet and this was definitely on the less sweet side. I also got mango sticky rice which tasted really good, but I wish they offered some coconut ice cream or coconut milk. Still amazing though. The ambiance inside the location was also very nice. I no longer live in Davis but visit frequently, and I have eaten at Thai Canteen at least half a dozen times in recent years. I've enjoyed their Thai tea and pad ka prow and thom gha gai many times. But a visit last weekend left me thinking I won't go back -- unless I get an apology. I asked the young man at the service counter about the new pancake appetizer. He asked if I'd ever had scallion pancakes, which of course I had, and he said "It's like that." So I ordered it along with my usual soup. It took a very long time to get the pancake, and when it finally arrived, it was almost inedible. It was NOTHING like a scallion pancake, more like a gooey crepe overstuffed with very soggy, soft, watery greens. It was very unpleasant to eat; I tried two bites and then couldn't eat more although I was hungry. The man from the counter was going by my table, and I politely said that the pancake wasn't what I'd expected and asked him if I could order another appetizer. He glared at the uneaten food and SNAPPED at me: "You ordered it. We can't just give you free food." And then walked off. I was disturbed for several reasons. First, I hadn't asked for free food. Second, he was rude to me -- I cannot imagine that the owners or managers of the Thai Canteen would want a customer treated that way (especially not a return customer). And third, one reason I go to Thai restaurants is to interact with Thai people, who are, in my experience, consistently calm, kind and polite -- as were the people I have met in Thailand. To be so rudely treated by a young man in a Thai place, regardless of his ethnicity, was shocking. I hope there will be a response to this complaint -- and I hope the young man learns that it's not okay to snap at paying, polite customers who are making very reasonable requests for service. read more

To preface, I have been here before and absolutely loved it which is why I gave it at least 3 stars. Yesterday I went with two of my friends and we ordered a mild pad thai with chicken and a hot pad thai with beef. The girl working was new I believe because none of us have ever seen her working there before. She gave us our number and we sat down. About 10-15 minutes later a waitress came over with egg rolls and we said we didn't order them. Then a waiter came with two bowl of food we didn't order either. The waitress went to the POS and checked and realized that there was a mix up and the party after us was suppose to have our number. However I was confused because our receipt had the same number as the one we were given. The girl at the register came over and asked to see our number and then just took it. She said absolutely nothing to us. No explanation. No apology. Nothing. I understand she is new and the mix up was understandable but she didn't say a word to us on what happened, when our food will be out, etc. It was quite upsetting and I feel like it's basic customer service to at least apologize and explain the situation to the customers so they're not left in the dark. At some point we began to get worried because the large party behind us in line had already receieved most of their food and we hadn't. Then our food came out and the mild chicken pad thai had no spice. We checked the receipt and the girl put in our order as a normal pad thai. We were pretty upset but it was so busy inside and we were hungry so we just ate it and didn't complain. Overall, if I had given this place a review in the past I would've given it a 5 star because the service and food is always amazing but after yesterday I have to lower my rating. Between the girl not filling us in on what was going on and not getting our order right, I was pretty upset. The food was still good regardless and I would recommend coming here. read more

I'm devastated to be writing this review. My (used to be) favorite Thai restaurant did something unforgivable--they gave my order to another customer who took it home. MY food containers were opened up, repacked, and brought back to the restaurant. Thai Canteen workers then gave that same food to my pick up person and told him it would be just fine! It is UNEXCEPTIONABLE for food to leave a restaurant with one customer, be brought back and then given to another customer. The kitchen should have re-made my order like they originally told me they would. Although my money was refunded, a worker at Thai Canteen told me I would also be given a complementary meal for my inconvenience and to make up their mistake. BUT when I called to place my replacement order, they said they would NOT give me a free meal after all. I have let the health department know of this issue and hope it does not happen to any other customers. read more

Didn't get any photos because I ate too fast- What a meal! I came here famished with some friends and left very satisfied. When you enter, the ambiance is so cute. It's dark, but in a bar/canteena kind of way. You order at the bar from one of the employees, and the employee was so sweet and gave me the college student discount! I ordered the drunken noodles, the pad Thai, and the green curry. We didn't want the pad Thai too sweet, so the lady recommended the gluten free sauce. I entered the facility at 1:15pm on 6/27/25 with my service dog, who serves the purpose of helping me go up/down stairs, and reminds me to take my medications to help mitigate my disability. I did not have my service dog vest with me today because it is being washed. When I went inside to order food with my friends, I was waiting in line before the cashier, Vinya, saw me with my dog and replied "no pets allowed" which I responded he is a service dog. Instead of asking what tasks he performs, she responded with: "Where is the service animal vest?" I explained I didn't have it with me, and her response was, "No pets allowed and some customers are allergic" before she attended to the customer in front of her. She was rude and did not ask the mandatory questions regarding service animals before turning me away. It felt highly unprofessional and inappropriate. Per the Americans with Disabilities Act, businesses and public places can ask the following questions: "Is that a service dog?" "What tasks does he perform?" Vinya did not ask either of the two questions. Unlike mandatory protocol that I've experienced at other professional establishments regarding my service animal, this discrimination I've experienced with Thai Canteen felt discriminatory because I had a dog with no "service dog" vest despite me having full control of my service animal. This was a clear violation of the ADA Act and I will be looking forward to seeing how the establishment responds to preventing these types of discrimination from happening again. read more

Tonight we ordered for delivery, my order was for a dish with chicken, extra veg and jasmine rice. Instead, I got a dish with some chicken, a small amount of veg and DOUBLE BROWN rice. We were in the area scouting for some food and came across this place as one of THE places to go for Thai food. We came a little late, but still 30-40 min before closing, but were told that we could only eat at the outside tables for takeout, which sucked but was understandable. Their menu items were named a bit differently than most Thai places, but basically got the pad kee mao, yellow curry, and green curry fried rice (which I never actually had before). All of these were made vegetarian, and was able to get them with just veggies too as we weren't really feeling tofu. And of course got thai tea as that's a must for me at Thai restaurants. You could also order different levels of spice from mild to Thai spicy. Maybe this was because they were in the takeout containers, but the noodles were really mushy. We got these Thai spicy as well, but as a person who handles a ton of spice, I have had spicier dishes at other places. The flavor was decent but not great. The yellow curry was too watery, otherwise it had good flavor overall. The green curry fried rice was interesting and tasted good and not watery, but I wasn't really sure what made it fried rice except for the curry being mixed in and some of the rice feeling a little stir fried but not much. The Thai tea was good though. This place might be over hyped now given that it was in business for a while and given the latest reviews.
