I have always been a huge fan of Thai Canteen. It has always been my go-to restaurant when I want to eat out. But the last time I went to the Sac location, my Pad See Ew noodles were horribly overcooked. I thought it was a fluke but today at the Davis locations, the noodles were also extremely overcooked. The other day, I happened to be in Davis and thought I would check it out.. glad to see this place has gotten even better! We ordered: Beef pad see ew Pork green curry Chicken pad thai Thai iced tea Diet coke =$42 Very reasonably priced for the portions! Service was amazing - from what I remembered we got a number for our table and food was delivered but I didn't expect to be constantly checked on to see if everything was ok - we needed extra plates to share and they quickly accommodated. Food came out fast and was hot! We also asked for thai spicy/hot *warning* this is not for the faint of heart. If you love spicy, this is for you!! And when I wanted to use the bathroom, they were so nice to open the door for me whereas other places would just let me wait till someone came out. I had my family with me and they were jealous I had this spot during my college days! Didn't realize it'd take leaving Davis to appreciate this spot more. I entered the facility at 1:15pm on 6/27/25 with my service dog, who serves the purpose of helping me go up/down stairs, and reminds me to take my medications to help mitigate my disability. I did not have my service dog vest with me today because it is being washed. When I went inside to order food with my friends, I was waiting in line before the cashier, Vinya, saw me with my dog and replied "no pets allowed" which I responded he is a service dog. Instead of asking what tasks he performs, she responded with: "Where is the service animal vest?" I explained I didn't have it with me, and her response was, "No pets allowed and some customers are allergic" before she attended to the customer in front of her. She was rude and did not ask the mandatory questions regarding service animals before turning me away. It felt highly unprofessional and inappropriate. Per the Americans with Disabilities Act, businesses and public places can ask the following questions: "Is that a service dog?" "What tasks does he perform?" Vinya did not ask either of the two questions. Unlike mandatory protocol that I've experienced at other professional establishments regarding my service animal, this discrimination I've experienced with Thai Canteen felt discriminatory because I had a dog with no "service dog" vest despite me having full control of my service animal. This was a clear violation of the ADA Act and I will be looking forward to seeing how the establishment responds to preventing these types of discrimination from happening again. read more

I love this place in Davis, it's one of the places on the top of my list to come back to when I'm in my college town. The food is affordably priced & the service is usually good, the front cashier is usually a student. I always get a Thai tea which is super sweet & delicious. I also got the pad si ew with half beef half tofu and extra noodles - extra noodles is super worth it to me. I love thai canteen. The food is super delicious and I would say that the overall interior of the restaurant is modern and clean. I usually get the pad see ew and it is so so good. Def recommend. Sometimes they can get really busy and the wait time is long, but you just need to expect it around dinner time. They also offer spice level options and let me tell you they are SPICY. My FAVORITE Thai restaurant in Davis and there are a lot to choose from. Thai Canteen is so good that two separate friends requested we go here for their respective last meal in Davis. Thai Canteen has solid portions, great drinks, and service. When dining in, I always had to walk up to the front counter and ask for a takeout box because the portions are so huge! You also need to spend $10 minimum to use a card. I have never had an issue with their service, even when the restaurant was packed. It's a popular place in town so it gets packed A LOT. Before COVID, I was fond of their selection of condiments and chilis. The pickled chilis are on point. I haven't dined in since before COVID, so the rest of this review is for takeout. I ordered through their website rather than an app (try to support local businesses this way so they don't get price gouged by delivery companies). Somehow there was a mix up and my delivery order was presented as a pick up order. I called them and they were able to figure out the issue and got me my food in 20 minutes! They even threw in a free Thai tea, which wasn't necessary but showed that they care about their customers! This wasn't their fault but a mix up through the ordering website they use so I really didn't mind. Onto the food, my go-to at any Thai restaurant is the pad see ew. They always do a solid job here. No complaints. I always get it with beef and wind up mixing in chili sauce. I am a spice fiend but know better than to mess with Thai spicy. So to be safe, I order mild or medium and add my own heat after. Pad kee mao is great, tang and crunch where I need it. I never knew that Thai Canteen had sesame balls and ordered them out of curiosity and to make the $20 delivery minimum haha. They turned out pretty great, $5 for 7 or 8 mini sesame balls with red bean filling. I didn't expect to find great tasting sesame balls at a Thai restaurant. Don't know if I would pay $5 for them again, but they were pretty good. Thai tea was good, pretty hard to mess that up. Please support your local businesses! This is one of my go-to Thai restaurants in Davis! I usually always get their pad thai, but I wanted to try something new when I went out with my friends. Their pad thai is great though by the way! It's not spicy and just has "home-y" taste to it. I got the number 11 (praramrong song). It comes with your choice of meat (chicken, pork, beef, or tofu) with curried peanuty sauce served over spinach and a side of rice. My friend recommended me to try it with pork belly because he said that the pork belly was super crispy and paired well with the peanut sauce! But sadly, they ran out when I visited... So I just got chicken. Praramrong Song with Chicken - 3.5/5 The peanut sauce was so thick and creamy! I loved mixing the peanut sauce, chicken, crushed peanuts (sprinkled on top), and spinach into the rice and enjoying it like that. I think what lowered my rating is the chicken. I found the chicken a little dry this time around. But maybe the pork belly will taste amazing with it like my friend said! I am going to try to come back and get this dish with pork belly instead. Overall, I went at night, and the place was pretty packed. You order at the front cashier, they give you a number stand, and you find a table yourself. Because it was packed, we had to jump around tables to be able to fit all three of us. We went from a 2 seater table and ran to the 4 seater one once people finished eating. Even though it was pretty packed, we got our food in a reasonable amount of time! I love their pad thai, and I always take my parents here when they are in town! The worst customer service I've had in a while. The lady at the counter was not wearing a mask even though there was a clear sign on the door for customers to wear masks. She spoke very very fast like she was trying to rush us through the process of ordering. We did it "to go" so we could eat outside. We came in on an relatively empty night and we were greeted with unfriendly staff that would constantly shoot us mean looks throughout the night. However, what really ruined our experience was that the food took more than 40 minutes to come to us. The cashier failed to communicate the wait-time to us beforehand and didn't check in at all with us about the status of our order. Additionally, other customers were also experiencing this inconsistent wait time and lack of communication. During our experience, we witnessed a worker talking rudely and aggressively to a customer and even cussing about them while walking away even though the customer waited over an hour and a half. Finally, when the food came it was nothing but mediocre. I got watered down curry with uncooked vegetables. Makes me wonder what they were doing for 40 minutes. All in all, terrible customer service with food that fails to make up for it. If you want a good time and good food, go elsewhere. read more

Pad Si Ew / pad see ew - Nicely done stir-fried noodles with the chewy consistency I'm always craving for. Perfectly prepared to ensure they don't stick to each other so easily. A little light on the soy sauce, but the dish was far from dry and still packed some flavor. Protein choices include chicken, beef, pork, tofu, prawns, or calamari. I chose beef, which added more of a chargrilled taste to the pad si ew. The Chinese broccoli brought a good balance (I've seen them use regular broccoli too) to an already savory combination of noodles and beef. Pad Thai - Thinner stir-fried noodles with a tangy sauce. I'm personally not a fan of this dish in general, especially if the sourness overpowers the other flavors. But the Aggies I know say this is probably the best in Davis. It has a healthy serving of sprouts, chives, and nuts. You can add a protein as well, I would pick chicken because of the juiciness it provides. If you have any dietary restrictions, ask to have your order prepared vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free. Kao Nar Bpet - AKA roasted duck on a small bed of vegetables with rice on the side. Much more generous with this dish, with a pool of sauce collecting at the bottom and portion sizes that justify the price you're paying. The meat was tender and delightful to chew, with a delicious honey seasoning to go along with it. The white rice was freshly made. They also have brown rice and sticky rice. The tofu and noodles were nicely flavored but next time I'll order mild spiciness. I also ordered a Thai tea, which was really sweet but good. I'm used to Thai tea with condensed milk but they use regular milk here--still tasted great (wish they had a soy milk option though). I recommend getting little to no ice bc most of my cup was just ice. They serve them in mason jars with paper straws that don't get soggy & don't rip, so thumbs up for no plastic and quality paper straws. All of this was roughly $15 due to the add-ons. I would have loved the green curry if it were actually mild, as I ordered. I took a couple of bites and realized I could not possibly pretend to enjoy it because it was just too spicy for me. When I brought my dish to the front and let Sam know she said they could not remake it, and when I asked she said they also could not provide any kind of partial refund. Additionally, she did not ask me if there was anything else I might want as a replacement. I understand that people have to deliver unfortunate policies to customers sometimes, if they just put a smile on their face when delivering the news they would be half as irritating and keep customers. My go-to's were always the pad see ew and the duck fried rice. The portion sizes are fairly large for the price and the dishes are always spot on with the flavor. I used to be able to order half and half on the protein selections for the noodles, but I don't think you're able to anymore. The spice levels for this place are on the higher side. The portion size is pretty solid for the price paid. It is definitely filling and you might even be able to split this into 2 meals. The amount of eggplant and beef is plentiful and the various bell peppers throughout add so much more flavor. The rice and egg complemented the dish very well. Overall, it was a delicious dish and pretty affordable! It was bursting with flavor and definitely hit the spot. I agree with the overall 3.5 star rating! We went at 4 pm and ordered at the counter. It wasn't very busy yet on a Saturday summer evening. Our total for three entrees, two appetizers, and two iced teas was $70. Everything came out pretty quickly. Overall, I would say the food is pretty good and worth the money in terms of value and amount. However, none of the dishes had the complexity of flavors I expect from excellent Thai food. The som tum or papaya salad was balanced between sweet and sour but had no other flavors. My pad see ew was sweet and thank goodness they used Chinese broccoli. But, there was no wok hei flavor in the noodles. I didn't like the fried fish cakes in terms of flavor or texture and the dipping sauce that came with it was like chunks of cucumber with a sweet syrup. A bit of spice would have helped all the dishes but alas I didn't see the jar of dried chili flakes near the water station until after our meal. Our dishes were dropped off without much fanfare. The young lady taking our order at the counter wasn't overly pleasant or friendly. No one came by to ask if we needed anything or were enjoying our food.
